The one about the forest kakes sense. Walden in english is an old english word for forest. Which is familiar from Thoreau's "on wlden pond". And then the one with Meiester i knew was the one with a leader because of the stop motion christmas show "Santa claus is comin to town". There was a burgermeiester in it.

Love Christoph Waltz and his wonderful and dry (at least from an American standpoint) sense of humor. I still remember just enough German that I got all of those right, but had very little clue on the two you gave at the end, other than the Rindfleisch at the beginning of the one you translated. Its amazing what comes back to you even after a decade.
I imagine you've picked up some things about American Football from osmosis given how long you've lived in Cincinnati. You've probably lived their long enough to even pick up the native Cincinnatian pride when the Bengals do well, but also knowing not to get TOO invested because somehow, in some way, they're going to find a way to disappoint.

3:40 As you mention words like Sitzpinkler (literally "Sitting peeing") are meant as in insult for what you would call a "wimp" in English. Others are Schattenparker (lit. "shadow parker", someone who parks his car in the shadow to avoid sunlight heating it up) or Warmduscher (warm-showerer). The most common is "Weichei" (lit. "soft egg", a soft boiled egg).
Some of the long German words like "Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsmütze" and all the other combinations of long Donau words (which is the Danube river) are actually made up by us Germans to make fun ourselves of our long compound words. (Yes! We do have a sense of humour!) But Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister is actually a common word in Germany, meaning the county's chief chimney sweep.

    • @benne_drakenpancer
      @benne_drakenpancer Місяць тому

That would translate to female speed limiter though. Maybe you meant Geschwindigkeitsbrgrenzungsüberschreiterin?!
The first doesn't make sense in Germany unless you were on a gendering crusade against male denominated car parts. The latter is technically a correct term but actually doesn't happen in colloquial language. You'd rather use Temposünderin (literally female speed sinner).

    Yes! Loved this clip...
My years of German that were forced on me definitely paid off... somehow these words seem absolutely logic to me.
In Dutch we do have some kind of a word for someone that looks nice from the back and not so from the front... it's called a plork.
Im not sure its still in fashion but when we used it the acronym meant "Pretty Body, Utterly Ugly Face" or 'Prettig Lichaam Ontzettende Rot Kop".
Christoph Waltz is an absolute gem, I understand these shows are completely scripted but I must hand it to him that it'll probably take a lot of balls to change seats in such a high regarded show, they don't seem to do that too often.

His humor is dry, like you said, but hey, they did the Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielsen where he delivered his lines straight, and they were either a double entendre or there were funny things happening around them. The movie is for the younger generation to enjoy in my humble opinion. I recommend it to you. CW doesn't speak any German in it to the best of my recollection. He spoke French and Italian in Glorius Bastards, but that doesn't surprise me since many of you Europeans are multi-lingual which I am jealous of being mostly German myself but being born and raised here in the USA washed that all away after my grandparents passed away in my childhood. Feli’s German language heritage slips into her English when she say, “That’s eleven letters only.” Putting the adjective after the noun it modifies was really common among military Germans I worked with in NATO. They all spoke excellent English and many had trained at our military schools in the US, but they usually retained at least a bit of an accent and occasionally an unusual (for American English) word order would slip in.

That is exactly what German sounds like to English speakers because English was partially durived from German and our brains ignore the parts that sound familiar and latch on to the sounds of the language which sound foreign to our ears. Gen Sch Vi Aus Ee and Oh in German are sounds that aren't commen in the English language so our ears pick up on it more and especially En because many German words end that we are frequently exposed to end it.

Double clutch gearbox. It is only a compound word. But the presentation was hilarious, indeed.

Well. Since you're dipping into this well for content, I mentioned a while back, but don't know if you're interested or not, but that there are a series of Flula Borg appearances on Conan that I think are hilaruous! If you don't know him, he's a fellow Bavarian that's an actor/comedian/DJ?, that has been in a few movies, but isn't necessarily that successful, but somehow ended up on Conan O'Brien's radar, and is a very wacky character, you kind of just have to see for yourself to understand, but Conan instantly fell in love with him as a guest, and he became a favorite that he had on regularly, and the conversation would often revolve around the fact that he's German, and then in one of my favorite appearances, he suggested Conan should go to Germany, so he did go to Berlin with a show he was doing that traveled to different countries, and Flula participated in parts of that, but probably the best segment from that show was when Conan learned about schuhplattler. You should check it out!

I liked Alita. It was NOT a great movie, however, it was an enjoyable family movie. It didn't have any great surprises. I think it was designed for 8 - 14 year old range.
The special effects were really good, first rate. The storyline was a little predictable. I would recommend it for family viewing. 😊😊

Anytime "meister" completes a German word it is some sort of person and a title. Meister means master or boss.

I've heard Feli and others say that the habit of German men to sit down to pee is a superior practice, but I think the fact that "Sitzpinkler" is used as an insult demonstrates that a)the current habit of German men to sit down is relatively new, and b) we American men need to continue standing up for all men of the world.

C*cksucker is also used as an insult, does that mean you consider _that_ an inferior practice that should be stopped? 😁
