    First time viewer, great video! Love Curse of Alton Manor, but haven't had the chance to ride the new Ghost Train yet. Also curious as to how Sub Terra has changed since it's original version given how amazing that was!

    Really great videos. The first song was from the haunted house “spookslot” in the efteling. Now they are building a better one “danse macabre” thank you for the great videos.🎉🎉

      Thank you!! Fun fact: the song was originally composed in 1874 and is actually called Danse macabre!
      Did you notice the hanging gardener from spookslot in the mirror at the beginning? 😂

    • @WorldofThrills
      @WorldofThrills  Рік тому +1

      To be fair it's probably flawed at the concept. Nothing happens on the ride system other than it moving back and forth again. So, the only thing they could do is to change the story line/script. But even with the most incredible actors and story, it would always be slow and unreliable 😢

    To be honest... I felt that the Wallace and Gromit ride could have been made SO MUCH better. Especially since I like everything Aardman made, the ride is not up to that level.
    It lacks storytelling. Instead, it mostly relies on a rather random selection of scenes with no connection between them. Also the animatronics each have maybe two or three movements, but that's it. It makes the theming feel so cheap and rushed.

    • @WorldofThrills
      @WorldofThrills  9 місяців тому

      Yeah I can see that! I've personally only done the ride once, and was definitely looking at it more though nostalgia goggles. Loving the older short films and of course Curse of the Were-Rabbit I very much enjoyed it ha!

    While i agree that dark rides here in terms of actual quality are higher than they used to be in the last 10 years, i think in terms of creativity, they're at their absolut lowest they have ever been, this is gonna be very wordy sorry. For example, Alton Manor. While i agree that the lighting and some effects are really good, i think the actual creative thinking behind it is horrendous, especially when its aimed for a family audience.
    The ride uses such a big amout of predictable and boring tropes from the horror genre, such as the possessed child, evil dolls, hooded demons, even the music in some cases. The ride that originally sat there, The Haunted House (designed by John Wardley) the ghouls in there were very different from one another, and made each scene very memorable, but why made the ride iconic was the clever use of its humour.
    One moment, a ghoul would junp out at you, the next moment it would offer you a cuppa tea. A ghost would fly over your head and go around a corner, us thinkng I'll jump out, it ends up showing it slammed into the wall in a comedic manner. Stuff like this though unfortunately didnt last long in the ride, as by the mid-late 90s, most of the humour was removed for standard jumpscares, using the same principle of Alton Manor. The quality was the same, but people started finding the ride boring and not as fun. A few years later, it was redone to Duel to try and keep the ride popular. We all know how that ended up. I've spent a lot of time in Gloomy Woods this year, and ive seen so many families and kids coming out either bored or crying their eyes out. The only people i see really loving it are enthusiasts and teenagers. There has been a lot of complaints by the GP.
    I think the problem is that Alton Manor (even though the original designed John Warldey was involved) doesn't have the subversion or ingenuity of the Original Ride in its first few years. While I personally enjoy it, I have to keep reminding myself that this is a ride aimed for families, and if I was 8ish, I think I wouldn't enjoy it one bit. My family agrees as well that it definitely isn't for them, they say it's too scary for kids and the backstory is too unnecessarily dark, especially for them. All in all, the tone is too dark and grim for a family audience personally.
    While Ghost Train at Thorpe Park is decent, again, it uses a lot of predictable horror tropes as well.
    The problem with the newest dark ride I believe is that they don't offer anything unique like a lot of the dark rides from the 90s. Sure, Enthusiasts love these new rides, but I think it's a very different story for the general public, especially for the family demographic, which I think hasn't really changed since the 90s either. I took one of my family members to Cadbury world and we rode cadabra, and they loved it to bits! Sure, it isn't that technically advanced, but I think the theme and tone really carried it for them. They loved the absurd idea of chocolate beans living in this village and the colourful feel to it. There really isn't any other dark ride like it.
    I know you'll probably disagree with my statements, but i hope you understand where I'm coming from 👍

      Hey Louis, thanks for taking the time to write this, I really appreciate it! And I definitely agree with that you're saying on the most part.
      I feel if I had ever experienced the original Haunted House then my outlook on The Curse would be very different. However, since only being able to ride Duel, in my opinion The Curse is a substantial upgrade (story line apart). And you're definitely right about how the ride uses classic horror tropes such as jump scares. And to be honest the part about Towers being a family park totally escaped my mind! I did The Curse twice on a pretty quiet day and really didn't spend much time at all time observing how other guests and their children were reacting to it.
      As for Ghost Train, yeah it's a pretty classic story - we tried to awake the dead and it all went wrong. However, as I mentioned I do feel the public enjoyed the main train scare sections on the train! Whether or not it stayed in their minds after the ride is a totally different thing, but for the most part they were laughing and screaming haha.
      For the record one of my favourite rides ever is Symbolica at Efteling which has a really upbuilding story line (you basically go on a tour of a palace) and would 100% LOVE to see something non-horror related over here.

      @@WorldofThrills Hi, thank you for the quick reply! I really appreciate it! I definitely agree that there needs to be more non horror dark rides in this country, at least we have some great ones like the London Experience, Sheriffs Showdown, Seaquarium, and Cadabra, but for some reason, there seems to be more mature/horror ones than ones for families. I think another key factor of so many UK dark rides not being widely successful is them being overly complex storywise. Sometimes a very simple story like the original Bubbleworks with no preshow are sometimes the best. Every modern dark ride is so concerned with a narrative and the plot, they can ruin the experience. Some are good (such as symbolica, Hex, The Haunting) and some not so good (Ghost Train). Sometimes, simplicity is key, narrative wise anyway, Blackpools dark rides for example. Not every dark ride needs a compelling backstory or Preshow, sometimes, the set pieces and props are all you need to know about a dark ride and the world you're in (visual storytelling, show, don't tell.)
      If you're interested in the Original Haunted House, here's a POV of it in its opening year! First one is in 1992, the other clip is 1993 ua-cam.com/video/XErHRssO0Q0/v-deo.html
