    I like lens defects with lots of character, so kinda interested in getting this. It looks like it would be a good alternative to my Konica 57mm f1.2

    Great review. Brightn star ...sunstars i get it.🤣 0ne normally buys a 0.95 for the character and it definately has a lot of it! Thankyou for the review

    Yet another great review. I wonder how this compares to the Meike 50mm f1.2? I have the EF version adapted (mc21) for my S5. It would be a great comparison. Sure the 0.95 is another half stop faster, but at what quality losses across the frame. Maybe it beats the Meike in image quality at f1.2, but maybe not based on your image examples?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому +1

      My Meike 50 1.2 is a Z version or I would have done some comparison. I feel the Meike might be a bit sharper and less CA at wide open. But IIRC, the Meike has some pretty bad lens flare which is the biggest weakness of that lens.

    It's too heavy for my Techart LM-EA9 or TZM-02 for autofocus, so I got the Mr. Ding Noxlux instead 50mm 1.1 instead.

    Thank you for the review Richard, I enjoyed it. The lens is seems like a great price. I noted it's available for Sony full frame as well. I wonder how it compares to the Laowa 45mm 0.95 in comparison.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and dropping a comment n c! yes it's available for E mount FF. I haven't done any direct comparison with the Laowa, but i believe the Laowa has better overall image quality, and much more refined construction/build quality, but at the same time a lot more expensive too.

    Looks like a really interesting lens. Reminds me a bit of the vintage Japanese lenses modified to fit on a mirrorless camera. It certainly has a lot of creative character and with the aperture clicks and logo it's pretty easy to check the settings with the hood retracted. How does it compare to the nisi sunstar lens. Thanks as always for the great review

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому +1

      It does have the character of some old vintage lenses. But advantage is you can buy brand new, probably cheaper overall, and size should be smaller as you don't need the adaptor tube to extend the length to fit mirrorless cameras. I never have a chance to test out the Nisi so can't really say much about it. Will see if I have a chance to try it out one day

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому

      Oh one thing i forgot to mention. The lens hood you can rotate it so you could move the logo to any angle/position, which means you can't rely on the logo to tell what is the aperture setting

  • @fretless05
    @fretless05 Рік тому +1

    The slight edges on the bokeh are a bit strange, but not off-putting. Like you, I have some vintage lenses that I love for their character, particularly the swirling effect some old Russian lenses give. This lens does seem to have some issues like chromatic aberration and the soft corners are things that can be either corrected or reduced in processing using most modern software. Coma is pretty bad, but then again, 50mm isn't the best focal length for astrophotography, anyway, but f2 is still pretty fast if you want to stop down and try it.

    hi, in terms of bokeh is this better than mitakon iii?

  • @trollenz
    @trollenz 2 роки тому

    Thanks for the good in depth review !
    I'd be curious to see a side by side comparison with let's say a standard canon 50mm f/1.4 because let's be honest, the bokeh is not that great anyway (swirly bokeh is really not my thing I have to admit) chromatic aberration is insanely ugly, and if you have to close to f/2 to get a decent image quality, the canon might as well do the job for cheaper and lighter...

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому +1

      If swirly bokeh isn't your thing and you really don't like/want any CA, a slower 1.4 or 1.8 lens maybe the better choice for you. Thanks for watching :)

      @@TheRealRichardWong Thanks Richard I was wondering if that was the case I see a lot of the relatively unknown lens manufacturers that are coming out with some surprisingly good product are telling me they're only making for Nikon Z mount. I'm an old style photographer I'm still using a D810 and not really wanting to change and have adapted my medium format film cameras to take the nikon as a databack allanjohnstonconz

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому +1

      @@allanjfotos hey Allan, yes most of the newer lens manufacturers are really focus on create lenses for mirrorless cameras these days for 2 main reasons.
      1. The mirrorless cameras allow the use of manual focus lenses, especially the ultra fast one, a lot easier with features like peaking, zoom in/magnification from the EVF. Some of these lenses just really hard to use even if available on DSLR
      2. While there are still lots of photographers prefer to stick with DSLRs, the market has mostly shifted to mirrorless cameras so that's what sells the most these days.

  • @maxhammick948

    This looks identical to the ttartisan 50 f/0.95 lens, although it is a different design - 11 elements in 8 groups for ttartisan, and 7 in 5 for brightin star (and a slide out lens hood). I think they just copied ttartisan's outer body design?
    The ttartisan one costs more, but for that you get more elements (more glass always equals better photos, right?) and it's in leica M mount which adds some complexity. If it follows their 50 f/1.4 release we should see a cheaper f/0.95 model launch at some point (probably $100-150 cheaper) in native sony E/Nikon Z/canon RF/etc

      Use isopropyl alcohol and rub it off

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 роки тому

      Yeah i also usually don't like have a big brand logo on the hood too. But companies do like to print their logos everywhere for obvious reason :P
      Yes as Marc said, i'm pretty sure you can rub it off easily with isopropyl alochol or something. Or you can put a black tape over it
