246. Canal pubs - featuring narrowboat legend Robbie Cumming
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 сер 2021
- Having meant to do a video with Robbie Cumming for many years, we finally got around to it a few weeks ago. I'm always getting requests from overseas viewers to go into the canal pubs but don't tend to do that alone. Who better to team up with to do so then than Robbie Cumming, whose youTube channel features a regular "Pub of the Week" slot!

As an American who's too poor to travel to see an English pub, I always like to imagine your pubs are like the one in Harry Potter in Hogsmead. If I could end everyday in a place like that, life would be good.
Another American here; Indeed, they do have a special treasure in those pubs and canals in such wonderful landscapes. Midwestern farm country here has its own uniquenesses and beauties and I am happy living here in this once upon a time riverboat landing county seat farm burg; even so, there is some kind of intangible something which pulls the soul in to settings like those at 8:29 and 6:41 and 5:11 and 4:15. May that 'something' always be valued and wisely stewarded.
There are still a few countryside pubs like that but most are more like "trendy" wine bars these days.
As a born Englishman, who emigrated to Texas 20 years ago, let me tell you that doing so is only sustainable about once or twice a week. The wallet can't handle it and the liver also begins to fail after a while. Plus "Don't Drink and Drive" is a slogan that hits you (literally) when you are less than 100% sober on a dark night going down narrow roads with stone walls.
I am THai, and I wish to go there too mate!
Indeed there are such pubs but ... most are a local "secret" and "foreigners" are not exactly discouraged but are kept ignorant.
A really, really splendid example of a locals' pub near where I used to live, which shall remain nameless, was full of locals who lived in fear of their pub being entered for "pub of the year". I kid you not.
Such things just brought in the gobby tourists, braying their heads off and generally upsetting the "ambiance' for the weekend by the hoorays and their women and noisy brats.
This pub had the fish man coming up from the south coast selling his cockles and winkles out of a wicker basket of an evening. Christmas saw the mummers, and the same folks came back as Morris Men of a summer's evening.
Some pub are so deep in the country they might be on a lane with no signposts ... really, really locals' pubs.
Unless you find them by accident or are taken there you'll never know they're there.
Which, as an unreconstructed Englishman, is the way they should remain.
My friend, this is totally one reason why narrowboating is exciting to non-residents. You hit the spot on the right topic
Pretty pub, dogs allowed, and cold beer... bliss!
Yup .. only spoiled by some duffer writing Dog's ...
Our two finest narrowboat vloggers together in one video. Who could ask for more.
Apart from the fact I’d love a narrow boat and find canal life fascinating....these vlogs help me decompress from the madness going on in the world. 👍
I think we are in a growing group of narrow boat enthusiasts who will probably never get the chance to live out our fantasy. Boating by proxy is as close as possible for now 😔
@@darronvine4387 say no more, say no more. if i live long enough i will travel there to visit and venture forth on the mother country on me own. wonderful this is
Fantastic video, you are Robbie are the dream team, loved watching this. Thanks so much for the mention snd for putting up the link to our little channel, we really enjoyed meeting you.
Thank you for showing GB in a way I would like to see!
You are always generous with your willingness to include other narrowboat owners who also have UA-cam channels in your videos. Good on you for that, it introduces us to them, but also reflects highly on you. I still love your vlogs and always look forward to seeing them. You are a connector of people and we are all better for it.
You cannot get better than a good pub lunch and a pint on a summer's day in England. Perfect.
Absolutely gorgeous country and the history…. I Can’t get enough. Enjoyed your guest too and his experiences. Good for him having a new show!👍🏻 thank you for another wonderful instalment. You’re still my favourite narrow boat vlogger.
You are the original and the best narrowboat UA-camr. So grateful to see you continue to share your experience and humor with the world.
Thank you :-)
Dave & Robbie together-I just about pee’d my pants! You guys go together like Fish & Chips-loved this vlog- absolutely fabulous!
My two favourite Narrowboat Vloggers in the one place - absolutely fantastic ❤️
I'm an American from the country of Texas (some will get that statement - all meant in good humor). No boating just Rving for me. Came across your channel a short time ago and you had a new subscriber immediately. Really enjoy your vlogs. Interesting content, beautiful countryside, wonderful history and well produced. Your professionalism shines brightly. Looking forward to your next installment.
Thank you!
Can I ask how is the building of the "border wall, between Texas and the rest of America going"?
@@robinlecomte1242 Their builder ran out of money because he never got a government contract to do the work... Apparently Mexico wasn't going to pay the bill either.
While I quite enjoy your cruising videos, as an American I really appreciate when you spend time on life and culture as well.
Especially these days, any way we can connect and understand another culture it's better for the world.
Yes I love these expanded stories of life on the canals - business and people who work and live there gives one a better understanding of the life style.
Two of my favorite vloggers in one video! I love Robbie's pub crawls.
@9:48: I have to say the young landlady appropriately summed up the spirit and the delight of frequenting a local pub in the UK. Unpretentious places where you don't have to wear your Sunday's best and can bring along your four-legged family member. I hope this experience is cherished and maintained for a long time.
Thank you David for your ongoing series. When I get a notification for a new CtC video, everything else is placed on pause. You are the best!!!
When 2 Titans of narrow boating meet you know it is going to be a good vlog, Robbie was the best guide to get for visiting a few pubs, looks like a lovely part of the world :)
Nice to see the different pubs on the way and talking to the landlords/ladies telling us what goes on there👏. Beautiful part of the UK🌄💚
Really miss your videos, perfect content and superbly constructed as always 👍
This must be one of the pinnacles of UA-cam. If UA-cam isn't for this, it can close.
Hahahaha I like that
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Building bars and pubs was a specialty of mine as a carpenter and often was given free hand to use my woodworking skills. I love the warmth and history of man's favorite home away from home and you've literally made my day. Keep up the excellent work. It's always an adventure.
Last years/season you asked what topics and content we would like to see. I, among others, requested more videos about the culture and everyday life along the canals. This video was SPOT ON, lad!!! Thank you.
Another reason to be on a narrowboat. Thanks David.
I'm LOVING your new format David! Robbie's right when he said, "It doesn't get any better!"
Stunning video quality.
Such a lovely video with a lovely man... and Robbie is alright too.
Hahaha he’s a top bloke indeed
Great episode David and you are correct that nearly every boater is now making videos but let’s not forget that you were practically the first and still the best
Cheers, yes I certainly didn’t mean that in any derogatory sense, more just an observation!
I love the way you're giving us a curated pub list it's what I've always wanted
Hello , we make in year 2017 a canal Boot-tour River Trent and make stops in Pups Drink and Eats, is so nice Atmosphere .
We are com from Switzerland we love and likes Pups on Canal .Nice
Great to see you and Robbie together. Thwaites! How I love and miss you!
While there may be dozens of boat-tubers doing canal videos, none have been able to capture the beauty and charm of the canals as well as you have David. I do miss the cruising videos, but I also love the special interest videos as well.
I do not care how many boaters have channels, you are the one for me.
As a child, growing in up West Yorkshire, i used to collect pub names on our family outings.....so much fun, so many great names. Thanks for a bit of a memory, David. Good to see a video from you. Be well and keep safe.
Oh yes, my 2 favorite canal boaters from across the pond!
Really the only 2 I watch. 🤣🤣🤣
Have a great week y'all & be safe cruising around,
Chris from Missouri
Lovely - great seeing you David and Robbie together. Thank you
Very well done David. Robby is a great presenter but I truly believe that I enjoy you just a little more. No offence Robby because I really enjoy you as well but David got me hooked on narrow boating. Looking forward to his new season. I wish Nashville had pubs near a canal but we do have quit a few honky-tonks near the Cumberland river.
Excellent, two legends for the price of one. There's value!🙂
Brilliant. I thoroughly enjoy your vlogs and Robbie is a great guest. So pleased to hear a 3rd series has been commissioned as it’s nice to watch a programme not fronted by so called ‘celebrities’. Sadly I think I will give the Rochdale canal a miss unless someone can magic my NB up the Rochdale 9 though the scenery is stunning.
My favorite aspect of your vlogs is the nearly self contained nature of every episode. I am at ep. 90 and trying to go through the episodes in order. Whereas this is absolutely necessary with many vlogs, I don't feel lost or confused by skipping ahead and catching your most recent post like today's.
Thank you for making this (and the English countryside) so accessible !!
Just loving hearing Robbie described as "narrowboat legend!" - lovely vid David even if you didn't say which was the pub of the week!
I love the old building of the UK, watched the show "Restoration Manor". To see the pub's in the same type of building is just lovely.
The two heavyweights of canal vlogging meet at last. Excellent stuff.
i remember this being in the works quite some while ago so imagine my delight when I spotted it. It is of course better than I could have imagined. Thank you David and Robbie.
Excellent!! Two favorite people just hangin’ about a few favorite places. Doesn’t get better than that. Can’t wait to get back there again ourselves.
Nice to see you both enjoying your day..thanks for taking me with, I wish it could have been longer..XOX
It was supposed to be a longer video but I kept forgetting to film!
@@CruisingTheCut must mean you were having fun...so you need to do it again..maybe in another area,.love and subscribed to both of you since I found out there was such a thing as narrowboats,,had I known 30 years ago there was such a thing I would have had an English accent long ago hbecause I would have been there.
Absolutely love the show and now finding this channel, it's so soothing!
I really like this vlog. I commented on one of your vlogs over a year ago about making a vlog about pubs. I finally got one episode. LOL. That is my dream some day to go to the UK and do narrow boating and check out a few pubs there. We have a lot of bars in Central Wisconsin but most are just plain vinyl sided buildings, until you get more into Northern Wisconsin and the U.P Michigan where they get a little fancier with Log Sided wilderness themed.
I always liked the old timey feeling of British Pubs. Stone or brick buildings. At least we can get some Cornish Pasties here. LOL
Who else sang "pub of the week" when they saw the video thumbnail?
...and then thought "hold on, that's the wrong channel!"?
I hope you sang along with the intro too then!
Of course! :-)
Good to see the two of you in one video. Also good to hear that a third series of CBD is on the way. If RC already mentioned it on his channel I must have missed it or forgotten already...
It was good to see you, I miss your travel vlogs.
Your pubs have always seemed to me to be very friendly places. I like that.
I would have watched a 30 min video on this subject. Pubs and grills along the canals have to be a fantastic part of the life.
Haha it was supposed to be a longer video but I kept forgetting to film as we were chatting too much 😂
I think you're on to something here! You should stop and visit all the pubs along the canals and share your findings! I LOVE english pubs! Alas, never been in one along a canal...but that's certainly on the bucket list now!! Oh, and i LOVE the fact that your canine companion can come in with you! Was in a pub near Stonehenge a number of years ago and a guy was sitting at a booth and his trusty canine was sitting beside him! Priceless. Guess i've got to move to the UK.
Great video David.
Finaly an episode about really important things of life ;)
Thanks again David.
Really beautiful part of the world, indeed. And thank you for working so hard to share it with us.
Another fantastic video, David- love it! 🙂
My two favorite narrowboat chaps in the same vlog! It does not get any better than this! There are many narrowboat vlogs and I don't have time to watch them all so I have a short list of those that I subscribe to. David and Robbie are at the top of that list. I also like CHG and Foxes Afloat. Always interesting content and well produced videos. Also, they all have a wicked sense of humor. That helps as well. Wishing You and Robbie all the best from David in Georgia, USA.
when Robbie mentioned his favorite pub and he said where it was i felt nostalgic as i grew up around pewsey and the surrounding areas and the kennet and Avon canal was my only local canal a beautiful canal
I'm currently in Devizes, heading back east. I'll be mooring overnight next to The Barge on Saturday 14th and will raise a glass to you, Sir.
I'm not a drinker but I would love to do a pub tour thanks to your video. The food looks good.
It was very tasty
What a great VLOG, presented by the best one in the industry, who's totally unbiased with his views, and the spotlight on the number one TV star. Thanks guys.
excelente post … the best of the best of the UK … love to see you two guys working together
Very enjoyable and I'm still sober! Until now I've failed to acknowledge your aerial photography. It's excellent and adds a lot of interest. I find it charming!
Another gem. A beautiful part of the country I must explore.
Yes, it’s lovely round there
I so enjoy your vlogs! Thank you for the brief respite from our American heat and madness.
I need to make a personal survey of those pubs. Strictly for educational purposes to see how they compare to Texas Honky Tonks you understand. Great Vlog as usual, thank you.
Forget about comparisons, you just enter a Pub, enjoy the beer and atmosphere (and food if hungry), depart for the next one and do it all over again. Once you have been thru an English Pub, your "honky tonks" will less appealing. Been there done that.
Heavy sigh... I never get tired of seeing the beautiful English countryside and waterways. David, whether Cruising the Cut or Vandemonium your episodes are always a treat for my eyes and ears. 😍
Just got to watch this vlog David and really enjoyed. Being brought up in Hebden Bridge the transformation of the canal has been incredible. I remember as a kid in the 60s and 70s it being a dirty overgrown with trees and weeds and basically a tip for anyone to dump things in and some of the bridges over the canal had been filled in too.
But I also remember the floods of 2005 and 2015 and the devastation it caused. to the towns and canal, the Stubbing Wharf been one of them. So it s good to see it looking so good again.
Awesome David
A beautiful pub along the canals , very good videos David your fans want more videos like these greetings from Argentina.
A great vlog, some amazing scenery, lovely canal, and two people you would love to spend your years with, the landlady at the Stubbing Warf, and of course our hero, the famous, the one and only, Davids friend, Robbie Cumming. Many thanks David for your amazingly good Robbie Cummings vlog, take care, oh, and you too David.
Very pleasing to see you back David. See you soon hopefully, take care.
Great vlog, good to see you and Robbie together.
great video. more of these kind of videos please . this is just what i like .you have a really great and beautiful country . love it. and the girls ....wow .
It is good to see you out enjoying yourself! So many beautiful locations and people to see and meet! Thanks again for sharing small slices of heaven on earth!
I lived that way for 30 years -best thing was to walk up to Slattocks on a lovely summers night and have a pint out the back of the Ship, Busy road mayhem out front round the back there were fields with livestock the canal and a beer garden. Such a juxtaposition that bring peace
Sounds great
Seeing these places to stop and have a break is so enticing! wow! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Mentioning the Barge Inn made me tingle...
Ooerrr
You are a British national treasure! I love every moment of your videos.... I have been fortunate enough to have visited the UK on a couple occasions; my ancestry is Welsh (just thought I'd mention that, although it means not much to most folks; my great grandma was Loretta Tharp (Tharp, not Tharpe) .... I hope you become famous one day, if you are not already famous.... Your content is perfect, as is your commentary; it is all very much-appreciated!
Nice entertaining video. I have always loved a good pub myself.
Love this channel and to see Mr Cumming as well - joy! Thank you gentlemen.
... and a cheese sandwich ... any vlog without a cheese sandwich is not worthy of posting on this channels list. carry on dear Sir. I love it.
Oh my God, lovely canals and all that lovely ale!, I'm very envious!. Robbie is a man after my own heart!. Lovely video again!,many thanks. Gérard lacey in Ireland. X
Excellent David as usual. Xx
David, now you really have been gone and done it! As a Yorkshireman living in the USA I found myself salivating over the sight of canal side pubs and freshly pulled pints of beer. I now know how Pavlov’s dogs felt when they heard the whistle!
Woof! Woof!
Your a step above David, no question. Not your typical You Tuber. Well well done.
Brilliant thanks 😁👍👏👏👏
Never cease to be amazed by how beautiful the UK really is in comparison to the stereotype of being dreary all the time
So good to see canals again and of course yourself David, your in an area I know well as my brother lives in Halifax, been in the Nasvigation pub myself very good ale and very friendly, thank you for the reminder with your video will take a look at the other channells mentioned. Best wishes and stay safe.
Under lockdown here. I can still buy drinks from the bottle shop as they are deemed "essential businesses" and so I'll get a beer and watch this video for company :-)
Wow that's fantastic!.. what a great video.. I absolutely love the Pubs you visited!.. So much History.. if those walls could talk... imagine the stories! Please keep doing more like this David... Cheers from Missouri USA..
Thanks for featuring Robbie. He is a highly talented videographer and have watched his channel for ages, with the old 2 cylinder diesel on Naughty Lass. Crank It!
He is indeed
Great vlog…two of my favorite guys!!!
Yes, another delightful look into the English countryside, made with care and professionalism. Your increasing variations on a theme is wonderful to follow, I do feel like watching the telly of my youth.
Great Video!!! As always I am so glad its posted during my lunch break. Cheers David!
Loved it great to see two legends together
Hello David Sir thank you for showing us a bit more of your Country Here in the USA We love watching all of it that you film
Thank you
A marriage made in heaven - Robbie and David and a load of good pubs 👍
All that beautiful water
Thank you for this lovely video
