For those that have never been to a top fuel/funny car race, you have to go experience it! As awesome as these vids are until you FEEL and HEAR these monsters in person you have no idea how brutally powerful they are… just do yourself a favor and GO! P.S.- Bring earplugs!!!
I've sat directly behind one and not only will it thump your chest it will blur your vision until half track. Not to mention make the hair on your arm stand straight up. Ear plugs ??? ;-)
I went to Funny Car Chaos at State Capital dragway in Baton Rouge and Mitch King Racing had his 2 top fuel dragsters there. I got to stand about 10-15 feet away from one of them in the pit area (I was able to go into their pits) when they warmed up the 2nd car. I felt my chest a little bit there, but when I watched them from the stands when they made their pass, that was something else. Never felt anything like that, but that makes me want to go to a national event. Also, the funny cars kinda struggled with the track until they got the prepping right.
I've been to top fuel meeting at Santa Pod and the sound level goes without saying.....ear plugs or defenders are a good idea. What I hadn't accounted for is actually FEELING the sound pressure as the engines burst into life. Thats an experience you won't feel the sensation of at any other motorsport event.
Goosebumps all the way! You’ve got me warmed up for my visit to Santa Pod here in the UK for the September FIA finals. Outstanding quality video and particularly the sound.

I was last weekend 26-8/28-8 '22 at the Nitrolypx, Hockenheim, Germany. A 470 km trip and the closest dragrace event for me and 1 of 6 events all over Europe. There were some top fuels. Therefor, I have to go to the USofA once, to see dragraces there. I stated many times, there is a dragstrip in any corner of any state and therefor I envy you Yanks......
Do it! I went from UK for a week at NHRA Heartland Park, Topeka KS back in 1995. Met John Force, Don Prudhome, Larry Dixon, etc. Four day VIP ticket with hospitality was about $120. The only thing I found disappointing was how far away you spectate from the racetrack compared to Santa Pod. Its far less intimate and you don’t feel the power, you just see it… lots of it! There was a 32 car field for Top Fuel alone. So yeah, much bigger but not as much of a physical experience.

The first time I took my daughter to the drags was at Pomona in 2013. She was 14. Top fuel had just fired up and we were near the fence before entering the stands. I'd already given her earplugs but she wasn't ready for that explosion that goes through your body. She dropped to the ground and yelled "We have to go home now. We can't stay here. We have to go." Luckily, I didn't laugh (too much). I convinced her that up in the stands would be much better. Of course, it wasn't better, but she realized she wouldn't die or anything. John Force had won another championship. It was a great day.

This is my hometown. I worked at Cordova on thier ambulance. When the jet cars took off, thought the pressure was going to push my heart out. Also remember, they would stop traffic on rt. 84 because the flames (or heat) from jet cars would shoot that far.
I've spent my entire life around nearly every form of racing and there are few (if any) things in this world that compare to a full, side by side, nitro pass, at night.
Dunno where you from, but I've seen also a lot of motorsports like tracktor pulling, DTM, EC rallycross, rally's all over Europe...... For me impressive motorsport, Rolls Royce Griffon in tracktor pulling, the 90's DTM, opel calibra alfa 155 v6 mercedes 190, group B rally(cross)
I don’t know how people stand next to these monsters when they are on without ear protection? They must have a significant other that nags? Huh, what did you say?
I would predict the an Nitro Altered would go 300+ mph at that track. Don't know if it beats Top Fuel or Funny Car but run with Nostalgia Funny Car head up to the Quarter Mile

That altered running 3.5's was impressive, lot of power in a short wheelbase.
