In the US / CA this filter may be the SunSun 302 Pro? It is also sold by other manufacturers and in the UK 'Finest-Filters' seem to be selling the same filter under their own brand.
As the 1000 lph filter featured here takes 2kg biohome ultimate it is suitable for a normally stocked tank up to 200 litres / 52 US gallons for a full cycle or a tank up to 100 litres / 26 US gallons if it is heavily stocked.
The 1400 lph version of this filter (EF2) takes 3kg making it suitable for tanks up to 300 litres / 79 US gallons (normal stock) or up to 150 litres / 40 US gallons (heavy stock).
The 2000 lph version of this filter (EFX) holds 5kg making it suitable for up to 500 litres / 132 US gallons (normal stock) or up to 250 litres / 61 US gallons (heavy stock).

    WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
Avoid using any products which claim to remove, detoxify or bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they will have a noticeable starving effect on the bacteria which will manifest as an inability to achieve a full cycle due to a low population of bacteria on a starvation diet.
Let Nature do the work and as long as you have a suitable sized, well set up filter there is no reason why a full cycle won't be achieved.
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that the recommendations are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

Thanks for pimping my filter mate. My tank is 190 litres so spot on with your assessment. It’s been doing a great job keeping the tank clean and water conditions have been complimented by a number of fish outlets, who have said the water is in better condition than theirs (which with my limited experience of water management, means kudos to you).

I think the problem most people have with any external filter but more so the cheaper brands is they clean them out to often! I hear of people cleaning them out monthly, I do mine once every 6 to 12 months I've even left it as long as 15 months as the flow was fine and the water was great in clarity and parameters! Most people over feed their tank which leads to filters needing to be cleaned more often! The more you move and clean a filter the more risk of breaking it or damaging the O rings/seals!

in 2014 i used two sunsun filters until after say 1- 1.5 years of service they both flooded my house, one a few months after the other. wife not so happy with that. the replacement sunsuns failed almost immediately. causing more unrest in my otherwise happy home. they are ok for the price if used only as a stop gap for a short amount of time. i did throw a 302 away that was working fine because i didn't want to cause anymore damage to my home.

    • @OriginalMindTrick
      @OriginalMindTrick 3 роки тому +1

Being cheap oftentimes cost you more in the end and you learnt that the hard way. The sunsun filters are known for leakage.
A pro tip is putting a canister in a large plastic bucket and have a water alarm sensor in the bucket. That won't save you if you are on vacation unless it's hooked up to an app on your mobile device.

The difference was unbelievable. So much quieter, and way more powerful. Pretty sure the ef2000 was no where near 2000l per hour...

I don't mean bad but I have removed all biohome of my filters. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me in heavily planted and stocked tank. Even with nitrogen supplements it is starving on N (tried different combinations over 1year) and/or NH4 (tried using urea and it can work) but since removed biohome around 4 weeks ago my tank has now recovered and is growing again. But biohome probably is the most powerful media in certain tanks.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 місяців тому

I'd say go for a HMA filter as it will remove most of the hardness but if it is a real problem then go for a RO filter but you'd have to re-mineralize after the water goes through an RO unit. You won't have to re-mineralize after it has been through an HMA filter but it won't strip out as much.
It is a bit pointless trying to correct the water in a tank with treatments since they will be an expensive temporary measure. Feel free to send details of the tank (volume, stock, filtration, substrate, decor etc.) as that will all have an effect on the way hardness is tackled.

Seachem Prime if you want it to last a long time as you only need a very small amount. Any dechlorinator will do from a reputable company though.

@@alanpilkington149 I've seen another video where he recommends not to use dechlorinators that claim to detoxify ammonia, I do use seachem prime at the moment, was just looking for other options!

Except they will try to send you a refurbished one like they sent me, i paid for a new one not a repaired one, i could see the fricken repair line where it was obviously leaking.

unplug, move to a sink or back garden, use large bucket of tank water to clean sponges and rinse of media, do not use tap water replace any damaged sponges refill cannister and fill with tank water, put it back in place and re-attach pipes, switch on and prime filter, check seals are not leaking give a little shake to get excess air out job done!

As Shug has said but I don't tend to rinse the media just the foams.

Hi Richard. I have added the prefilter booster for the mechanical filtration as advised in one of your other videos. However, for the settlement area in the bottom of the prefilter, to break up the flow & settle the large muck, I have thrown in small bits & pieces of waste cuttings of the coarse sponges left over after cutting out the coarse sponge according to the template. These should hopefully trap & settle the large particles in the bottom of the prefilter before it hits the main sponges.
I then threw in the plastic bio balls into the space at the top of the prefilter which I hope will trap any particles that may have found their way through the coarse, medium & fine sponges & maybe possibly also do some aerobic filtration in the process before it goes to the main canister for biological filtration. Please advise if this set up would work.

These filters are the worst. If you managed to get a model that doesn't leak you are extremely lucky .buying new gaskets won't solve the problem .I have had 4 all together and all had similar problems .one leaked into the UV causing it to short (new glass UV tube and gasket didn't solve the problem ).others leaked at the main sealing gasket or the primer pump (changing them gaskets did nothing to help ) .Ended up with so much grease on the seals trying to find and stop the leaking that the filters just eventually ended up in the bin .Waste of time and money .
