How interesting. SNES drunk start posting regularly again, right after masahiro Sakurai ends his series. This is the type of serendipity I can sign up for
It's just so funny that the pretty much everything in the game is super weird but the localizers had to draw the line at the tengu mask, that one detail was the only thing that crossed the line lol.
Even funnier was that it was the other way around. Nintendo Co. Ltd. didn't want to license a game where you control a giant severed head, so, frustrated, the designer replaced it with a tengu mask as a reference to Nintendo and its history with making hanafuda cards and called the game Abarenbou Tengu (= Hooligan Tengu) as an up yours to the company, for vandalizing his game.
@@michielkroder4031 There's also the issue that the severed head could be interpreted as Taira no Masakado, a 10th Century samurai enshrined as a tutelary deity in Tokyo. So, it's to Nintendo of Japan what crosses were to Nintendo of America.
First time I saw this game I thought it was a Chinese bootleg or some sorts, being this unhinged of a game and I was like "WTF was that?!" This game is great and bizarre, I love it.
I don't know how to put this in a comprehensible way, but that review (based on the current upload to spoony's youtube, made jan 28, 2007) was posted 16 years after the release of the actual game (NA release jan 1991). between spoony's review and nesdrunks review it's now been 17, almost 18 years. this information is useless, but to me personally fascinating

I bought this game from a rental store liquidating their inventory. They kept the box and inserts, and the cartridge is mint because it wasn’t rented much. One of my most memorable in my NES collection.
I can't remember his name (maybe Taira no Masakado) but there's a legend of a samurai who's head kept taunting people for days, even as it was mounted on a pike. The head eventually got free and flew around for a while, being a right menace until it returned to his body. The only reason I can think of for censoring it in Japan would be that they were afraid it would anger the head. I think his grave is still smack dab in the middle of the financial district; there were some serious accidents when they last tried to pave over it in the 60's.
What i remember most about this game is the cover art. I had no idea it was a space-shooter! I figure it was more like a zombies ate my neighbors kind of game.
I'd suspect the Japanese version has less sprite flicker, simply because the tengu mask isn't as wide as the disembodied head, thus perhaps better staying within the 8 sprites per line limit of the NES. The mask even rotates when it fires, making it look even thinner.
I was surprised this is from 1991. Somehow I have completely missed this one back in the day, and looking at it now it just has this weird modern romhack -kind of vibe to it. Not many NES games have such ubiquitously destructible background objects, for one. Feels like it would be fun to play for a while just to blow shit up and destroy everything around you.
Hey, I played that one recently. This game wasn’t a masterpiece but it’s worth checking out I’d say. I’d certainly take it over Silver Surfer as that one is just way too hard for its own good.
Whoa…How did I miss this being released on Switch? And it’s been there for years? I’ve always wanted to try it out ever since I saw it in Nintendo Power.
I definitely was NOT expecting a Superstar Billy Graham reference in this video. ...then again, I'm kind of known for not expecting things. Like, say, a wildebeest stampede down at the gorge...
In the halls of kusoge, Zombie Nation definitely has its place. It's not because it's bad though. It's because it's weird. It's not quite a bakage (ala Toilet Kids) but it comes close at times. Gotta give credit to publisher Meldac though. This is exactly the sort of game most companies would be too cowardly to even try to bring stateside.
Weird game if there was ever one. I remember renting it one of my long lost weekends over what bad game I'd get and as soon as I started playing it... I didn't get a damn of what was going on the screen. Good thing that the dude at the video renting place was only 2 blocks away from home and swapped any of the games without an issue. And also good thing TMNT III: The Manhattan project was available that day. So, happy ending for everyone.
I see a level that looks like it came out of Contra and explosions and gems that look like they came out of Guardian Legend. I didn't recognize the title but seeing the gameplay, yeah I remember this one.
I'm familiar with this game, but I've always heard it referred to as _"Samurai_ Zombie Nation." (The floating head belongs to a samurai.) I went looking, and the box art and title screen just read "Zombie Nation." Now I'm not even sure if the "Samurai" part of the name was ever part of the title in any official capacity.
I would say the game is not groundbreaking, not particularly fun, not innovative, not a classic but yet.. it is still worth of note I think just because of the presentation. It was a LOT of style on the NES we never saw. Ok, I think I know the word for it - oddity. It is a very important oddity
Rather than "kusobe" I think you probably mean "kusoge"? Easy mistake to make lol Kusoge means "shitty game" (kuso geemu literally means "shit game") Unless of course kusobe is some new reference/meme that I'm not familiar with, which is possible lol
“Zombie Hostage”? Yeah, those are just people and you’re eating them! Namakubi is all about destroying Dark Seed; he’s not about saving humanity The attempt to censor the lunacy is hilarious I find it interesting that you’re a severed head in the US Version when in the Japanese Version you’re a possessed mask. It’s usually Japan that gets away with the edgier material Lastly I do kind of wish they kept the Statue of Libertys design from the Japanese version in the American One: it just looks like the statue come to life and honestly that I find way more unsettling than having it turn into a gorgon
Help! I'm looking for a NES game that I played as a kid, but don't know what it's called. All I remember is, it is a vertical scrolling space shooter, and one of the power ups look like an eyeball.
Funny how, considering Nintendo's strict censorship back in the day that the Japanese version has the more toned down main character. I guess it was easier to give us decapitated zombie head than to explain to American kids what a Tengu is.
