Should the C8 Corvette look more like a Corvette? | Chip Foose Draws a Car - Ep. 23
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- The C8 Corvette is the realization of decades of mid-engine Corvette concept "teasers" promising to take America's Sports Car to the next level of performance and style. While Chip Foose has mixed feelings on the new body style, he appreciates the giant leap forward this generation provides. But can he redesign a C8 to have a stronger connection to Corvettes of the past?

The intake design alone makes this about 100x better. Great job.
Yup ! The first time I saw that car , I thought " wow , some American kit car co. just tried to make a Ferrari and got a Vega" ! LOL 😂
Hell no that like an old geezer design.
@@inmyopinion6836 You're high. The C8 is an incredible looking car and engineered much better than most supercars.
@@Viper3048 Engineering is not in question . It is the flimsy add on looks of some of the body components . I feel like the new design is mature looking and better thought out . FAR more attractive
I understand what his point is of the intake, but i still prefer the orginal. Imo his sketch of the side profile with his air intake looks a lot more like an Aventador than a corvette to me, especially in the early iteration of his sketch. Just my take
Chip Foose, now that's a name I haven't heard in a decade. Good to see him still nailing those designs.
The entire ass end of the C8 looks like an afterthought.
It’s a squished camaro rear end
It’s the reason I cant bring myself to like that car. The rear end is so bad. They need to forget “its not a corvette if you cant fit golf clubs in the back” bullshit thought process when designing the car. It ruined the design.
@@2_hotty yeah. The extra truck space in the rear makes it look horrible. And that air vent behind the doors really does look just tacked on
Like all GM designs, everything is an afterthought
the rear is a camaro with a few extra chromosomes
I love the design of the C8 but like he said, “am I looking at an NSX, or a Ferrari?” - this new design you made is also really really amazing and cool as well! Nice work 👍🏼
The C8 convertible is definitely a looker. It shares my garage with my Ferrari and more than holds it own.
The change in side glass dramatically changes the look of the car alone to feel more like a Vette. Good work, Chip!
But the changes are unpractical, unreasonable.
@@gustavoflorio5383 thats why its a concept design.
Because all he did was "how to make it look more like C7"
*He's spot on about the vent, it looks like it was just thrown on there...it just clashes with the flow of the design...I don't like the GM wheels either...*
It may be performance related but it does look more like a Corvette. Chip's design really does look better.
Those vents were styled after the F22 and F35, and they look good on the C8 as well as the fighters.
Pretty sure the awkwardness look to it truly came as an "after thought" but not in the way that we would think.
The original design probably went together well with the overall design but when it comes to the building itself, there are some areas that will need to change.
For example, his design is never going to fly in terms of road legal from the factory.
The front and rear design lack the space to actually put a bumper bar.
The bottom of the rear end will not work especially since it's a rear engine now so the real estate for that is even way less.
Meaning that either the wheelbase needs to be longer so the cabin isn't taking too much of the rear real estate to install a sufficient road legal exhaust system or that bottom needs to not be angular so that you can install at the very least a proper muffler (since there are noise constraints as well on top of emissions restrictions).
Also IDK how well those tiny windows are going to go in terms of visibility or race driver/customer preferences.
Then again, C8 has a lot of practicality built into it so I can't really say about the limitations imposed on the design. Perhaps that his own design can work as a production car but will be more like the GT and become a hyper car instead of a daily work horse. I mean there are loads of space that they could use (I'm not sure if they just have that reserved for their hybrid C8 that will be coming out in the next few years).
GM has had trouble with wheel designs lately. The C7 ZR1 wheels were not great either. I guess there's a reason that there's such a wheel aftermarket.
Imo the C8 looks so much better in black than any other color because of all those vents and trim pieces
The 1st time I saw the C8 in person, for some reason it look to me like an Acura NSX. I knew that the scoops didn't look right, but couldn't think how to change without looking like an Aventador. Foose design is right on!
1) I hope GM see's this to incorporate it! 2) moving that vent back and extending the rear quarter window really makes the car feel like it has a longer nose, back to being reminiscent of a 'Vette!
Real nice. The overall process of the sketching was kinda soothing and therapeutic. The product looks wayy better and shared some of his views about some of the C8s details. Solid👍
Your a legend foose, have always loved the way you design and make suttle changes that make to look twice. You should just work in the design department for GM
YES!!! You explained this exactly the way I've been thinking it. I've seen quite a few C8's and every time I do I think, "That doesn't look 'Corvette' enough." Great take on this concept, Chip. I've been a fan of yours for many years and very much enjoy these videos. They inspire me to draw more and whisk me back to my CARtoons magazine days.
The best single change he made was taking that "peak" out of the roofline.
so now it can be driven only by midgets...😅
I'll say the redesign of the air intake. The OEM design really ruined the look.
I’m relieved that a great designer as Foose said exactly what I said when I saw the C8... “is that a Ferrari? Mmmnnno, it’sss a Corvette”. I agree that when you saw a C7 you knew it was a Vette. With the C8, no disrespect intended, but I feel it’s going to go down as a “wannabe Ferrari”. And I really don’t know where you can go into the future with this design.
@Jordan Winders I cannot agree more!!
The c8 is a Jdm Ferrari
I really enjoy this series. Foose always has an interesting take on what ever car he chooses to design.
*Thank you* ! The C8 is absolutely hideous. The front two-thirds are passable, but it all falls apart horribly in the back. No tension, no elegance, wrong proportions. Voices like mine were silenced in the yank-jerk-fest that was the launch, but gosh, do I loathe that car.
Ive critcised the car, and the fanbois just love to attack for it. I call it a Ferrari, not a Corvette
I agree. Like chip hinted at, it looks so busy and tacked together. Proportions are all wrong. Chevy had a chance to do something modern, but it looks cartoonish, like a Camaro.
@@LuciFeric137 The more I look at the modern camaro, the more I dislike it, and I'm an F body fan.
@@imgooley I'd rather have a gen 1 or 2 tbh..ok yeah I'm a boomer...I has a 70 Z28 and a 78 coupe.
@@imgooley me too. I had a 74, a 79, and an 82 trans am. The 74 was the best.
Holy! Youjust SMASHED Corvette design team!!! :O
No he didn't. It's ugly. he took a mid engined car and made it look like a front engined car. Looks like an old chrysler sebring.
Thank You Chip! Finally, someone on UA-cam has the same opinion as I. I could not identify what is missing, but you did! Paraphrasing”... the great Corvette lineage is missing from the C8...”. I hope Chevy listens to you! If they do, I’ll buy one, the CF-C8 😎
The C7 should continue....The C8 should've been named the Aerovette, after the 70's mid-engine concept car.
I always thought the C8 shoulda been called the Zora… not like Chevy performance models don’t already all have a Z somewhere in the name and putting the engine in the back was his idea in the first place
Corvette Stingray for the mid-engine car
Corvette Cx for the front engine version
@@vitreo1363 Manta or Batray for the mid-e... Stingray always front-e!
He'll Na... The look of the c7 is over done and boring and outdated.. They needed fresh air and new design.....
@@llllllllll1652 outdated? Bruh that’s a classy design that aged really well. It still looks prettier than the c8
I think I like his version better. It's true that the new car doesnt look like a corvette anymore. Even the taillights look like a camaro. Give it 4 circle taillights, make it useable for tall people and I trade my f-type for it.
Chips redesign looks like a f-type 🤷🏾♂️
Totally agree. The first time I saw the C8 I thought reversing the angle of the side intake would do wonders. I'd like to see a version without pulling the windshield back, you know, embrace the mid-engine and the front/rear balance that it inherently creates. I really enjoy the watching Chip effortlessly improve what others have likely spent countless sleepless nights trying to solve.
He is such a professional. I truly respect Chip. He talks the talk and walks the walk.
I do like what he did with the backlights, the spoiler being body color as well as the air intake change.
Chip in 5 minutes smokes every gym (edit: GM not gym.. damn auto correct) designer who spent years on it. What a legend!
You really nailed it with the window redesign and the steeper angle of the tail-end. I personally love the Italian-inspired C8’s design, but yours is certainly a more faithful rendition. Excellent job.
That's a great sketch, although, I feel as though the rear roof line has been brought so far back that is almost looks like a shooting brake.
it looks more like a corvette than a fake ferrari
But what I don’t get is the body proportions to the roof. That window looks too squinted
To the people in charge at Chevrolet: please hire Chip Foose to design the C9.
No
@@04dram04 Why no?
They should do this immediately. Pay him whatever he asks.
A world of difference. I would certainly consider that.
THIS is a major improvement! Hope the C9 will be along these lines. The C8 side intakes were upside down, the nose and tail were like from two different cars and headlights done at the last minute.
As a C7 owner, I feel totally the same. Really liked your sketch! I'd love to get the performance upgrade of the C8 but I think the C7 looks way better. I think I'm going to wait for the C9.
Tom Peters, are you watching? THIS is how you should have designed the C8..... THIS is a Corvette!!
My goodness Chip Foose you're legendary ...Tremendous improvement and Instant Corvette look
Watching this again. I LOVE the '63 nod in the belt line and the fender bulges. The C2 coupe is one of my favorite generations.
If I ever got one, I think I would paint that weird black scoop body color. Side note...I don't see a lot of similarity between the C1 and the C2 at all.
IMHO, front fender and rear quarter lines (humps) scream C2
I have video of a guy taking delivery of one with body color side scoops, 100 times better looking
There is some c6 on the door panel.
i think you can get them body color if you order the car
@@kruleworld the R8 scoop design is just iconic at this point, it would be missing a lot if it wasn't there
The vent makes me immediately think "stingray"
I just straight up do not like the look of the C-8, doesn't look like a corvette anymore, I wish it looked more like what has been drawn
I have no words for the mechanical specs, they're awesome but the body is total unmatched, kinda looks like many parts were gathered from bunch of cars, tried to make it work but not a good job. The rear looks too bulky but the nose is too small, too short.
Wow, i wrote above review in the first min of the video. Chip said exactly the same thing around the middle of sketching. I guess watching Chip opened n improved my vision. I'm on an other level. ✌️💖
Chip, you have a special talent. Your corvette looks more inline with the greats of yesteryear. I like your design. It oozes vetted styling with modern mid-engine beauty. Foose Forever.
This looks beautiful. I wish that new corvette looks like yours :D
Chip Foose, Jason and Magnus. Hagerty the perfect channel!
OMG!! Foose’s interpretation is SOOOO much better that GM’s.
Other than some minor details on the very front & very back, he nailed it.
He gives the car a more cab rearward look that really helps to camouflage the mid-engine layout. The front end isn’t so short, stubby, and droopy. And the high point of the roof/greenhouse is set much further rearward than the production car giving his car a much sleeker, sexier, less cartoony look.
One item on Chip's car that REALLY helps is the vent set between the door and rear wheel opening. Most mid-engine cars have such a large expanse of sheet metal there that it makes them look goofy. But by putting that large vent there, it really breaks down the mass and hides that weird mid-engine look. Great move putting that vent there.
His looks more like a front engine car, which is appropriate for the Corvette.
GM really eff’ed up the C8.
Hi Chip, nice job on the redesign. You Nailed it! You came to east GA a few years back (2006?) and were a part of a car show. I bought the expensive ticket which included your signed artwork and a photo op. Unfortunately, i had a heart attack Friday and was in the emergency room on that Saturday. Hopefully, I'll get another shot at meeting you and seeing your work first hand. I'm always amazed at your skill.
I've NEVER understood why they made that side intake such a McLaren swoosh instead of a squared off design like you drew. Looks heaps better and flows with the linearity of the design language evolution like you said.
Because the design committee was obsessed with the fighter jet analogy, which is a childish attempt to lure younger customers, which was a waste of time because they have no money.
"It's a quick loose sketch..." ... I beg your pardon?
I briefly met Chip on a flight from DFW to Nashville on my way past first class to the cheap seats. I at least had the time to tell him I loved his show "Overhaulin'". Wish I had been bumped to first class to watch this genius do a drawing like this. Amazing!
Pulled up on a new C8 the other day. My 82 year old mom (a HUGE muscle car fan) had no clue what it was until I told her. I think Chip absolutely NAILS this design. Chevrolet should reach out and buy his design!
I have a vette now and Im on my third vette but the C8 isnt my cupmof tea, do not like it.
Yeah but not everyone likes chrome rims, Tommy Bahama shirts and white New Balances.

chip is the man! should definitely be on the squad at GM for designer for the old school cars!! SALES WOULD BE OUT OF THIS WORLD! Imagine if he designed the K5 BLAZER? WOOOOWEEEEE
Incredible work. Sometimes I look at the finished products of these cars and wonder what the process was to come up with such a mess. Talented people such as yourself make this look easy in a 10 minute video. You just have to have vision.
Hey Chip, I hope you are doing well. My girlfriend and I met you in person at Charlotte Motor speedway, You and I talked about my Pantera and you told me about your Detomaso Mangusta. It's better, period. Don't even need to be an artist to notice.
Anything chip draws is better
It's worse, and chips drawings look childish and unpractical 99% of the time. I'm so lost as to why people like his work
@@ashleyavenuemusic Yep, he ruined the front end
C8 design looks way better.

totally agree, when I saw this new Corvette I though was another brand, Amazing Foose, grettings from Colombia
How about we say the C8 should not be called a corvette, they should have just thought of a different name and continued the corvette alongside it.

You are absolutely right, the c8 is no doubt a good looking car. It's just not quite a Corvette looking car...
The elongation of the windows & deck lid are definitely aesthetically pleasing! Spot on!👍
It’s not only the Corvette that changed,
The whole world is going crazy!
But you are the bright light in the dark!
"quick, loose sketch" bruh..perfection
The C8 is a mangled design of a car, whole styling looks slapped on and seems to be trying hard to look like a Ferrari.
You get what you paid for...
Just see the Falcon F7, is the perfect shape for the Vette C8. Good work Chip.
As a previous owner of a C7, I have the exact same misgivings about the new C8 as you expressed. When you see it coming towards on the road, the question is "is it or isn't it" and that is a shame! Your rendering is spot on - A++
Honestly. This design is perfect. The rear end screams Corvette
Nice job carrying over some of the elements from the previous generation, though it has a sort of generation IV Camaro vibe to it. Make this the new mid-engine Camaro?
I wonder how much this sketch would go for? I know I would love to have it. A great piece of Art from a legend.
Foose is brilliant. His rendering is spot on.
Exactly what I've been saying since I first saw the design. Looks like a Ferrari. I have no problems with Ferraris, but a Corvette shouldn't look like one. I think the new design is a big mistake. I agree completely with Chip there.
Yeah, seems like they started with a clean sheet with no carry over style from previous versions! This one continues the Corvette body evolution. 😎👍🇨🇦
love videos of this dude. i may not have the same taste but massive respect.
100% agree that when i first saw this, i didnt know what i was looking at. didnt look like a corvette at all
I love the new Corvette's design. I've always loved Foose's designs since I was a kid too, but I'm glad they changed it up. Gotta remember that the Corvette has always been inspired by aviation and now it looks more like a fighter jet than ever imo.
Yess exactly great points. They actually studied i believe raptor jets when designing the c8..
Anything that Chip lays his hands on, is Gold !
FINALLY someone has said it. The new Corvette will never be so desirable from a looks standpoint into my eyes as the previous generations.
Whats amazing to me is the fact that we're now over a year beyond reveal and release and UA-cam STILL buzzing with reviews and critiques and test drives,,.etc etc! as a Corvette fan ( ive got a 77 ) its awesome to see its success. Especially being an American car built in Kentucky! Those whom aren't fans of it for whatever reason still can enjoy the C6 or C7,.which are also great cars.Again,.spectacular successful for such a storied American brand! Now if we can just get the same type of youth centric online buzz for a Harley Davidson product. Some older American brands need more help then others,..much much more help.
In my teens, I absolutely admired the C6 Z06 and ZR1. I always had plans that if I ever came into money, the first car I would get would be either one of those. Same thing with the C7 Z06 and ZR1. Love them. The C8 is the first generation that I felt unmoved and kinda disappointed about. Don't get me wrong, it's still a nice looking car. But it really lost a lot of the identity that we know of as being Corvette. Also, I get that they wanted to make the motor lighter and rev higher, but I will always prefer that aggressive growl of a cross-plane V8 over the sound of a flat-plane.
Amazing! I wish they had you on chip with the design of the new corvette! Great job man I love it!
Now redesign the interior and add a stick shift and we are all set!
But Americans only drive stick in UA-cam comments.
@@truantray 4 out of our 5 cars are stick, and two were bought new.
that grill and those wheel humps scream corvette. congratulations mr Foose, like always, superb design.
As kid, I used to trace over pics in the Road & Track, with onion paper in the 70's. Great memories Chip. Ordered my C8 and had the body paint match the side intake to give it more of a flowing look.
I think the C8 will change obviously with refreshes in the next few years. If Chevy hits the 40,000 units per year anticipated, that is just incredible. Another $4 billion approximately to the bottom line.
Agree it needs help but im not sold on this design either....the c7 was beautiful 😍
Especially the c7 zr1 its wayyyy above and beyond
This one's not perfect, but it's light years ahead of the current, milquetoast design.
For a request, next I would like to see his version of a Mustang SUV.
Um no. We don't need SUV drawings now.
You're at pro level or above when you draw will a pen vs a pencil.... Amazing
First of all, WHOA!!!Absolutely great concept. I really love the respect you have for the car. That rear is gorgeous, very reminiscent of a 67 C2! If it was me I would have put a little bit more curve on the front fender above the wheel well. I always loved what I considered the Corvette's 'hips'. Regardless of my insignificant criticism, this was amazing, please go to GM as a design consultant! !!
I saw one in person a while back. I thought it was a Ferrari from far away. Looks like a Ferrari 458 to me
Looks like an NSX to me.
458 is much more elegant and simplistically beautiful, the C8 has a lot of sharp lines and seems more futuristic/contemporary, hence the comparisons to an NSX.
It does also hold some similarity to general Ferrari design language though, so you and Chip are right about that.
@@Marrrrtin yeah makes me think that Chevy copied other cars and didn’t think anybody was going to notice
@@Marrrrtin Other than the proportions, it doesn't look like a 458 to me. I couldn't tell the difference between a C8 and NSX at a distance in a parking lot.

Chip foose absoultely shits on GM, an auto-biography
And they should be shat on. If not for the design, the 1980s Yugo build quality and poor QC. The are delivering cars with parts on the left and right that don't even match. Panel gaps are horrible.
Every Corvette is unique and every new model better than previous ones.
People who own them, are lucky indeed!
Four rounded rear tail lights is a signature design feature that many of us associate with a corvette.
3 minutes in. Oh god that's already better.
The 911's "evolution" consisted of, every year : . "That'll do Hans, lets get to the bierkeller".
Chip is just one of those gifted people who's super talented, who's brain works differently and just has an eye for cars!
I thought it was a Ferrari when I first saw it. Your unfinished first sketch looks better than the factory product.
Your design is way better
Is it just me or the new sketch whispers aventador in the back and mclaren in the front portion of the car... ?
same here at least for the aventador bit
I assume that is just the result of it being mid engine. Mid engine cars all start to look the same at some point. For me, the current c8 looks like a love child of a McClaren and a Lamborghini.
I get more an Aston Martin vibe from the rear in his sketch
What a cool designer Chip Foose is. It was funny when he mention that it looks like an NSX because I kind of thought the same thing when I first seen it
Really like what Chip did with the side windows as well as adding the sharp line across the car.
The C7 started the trend to stop looking like a corvette. Those hard, angular lines and the taillights, yuck. The C7 is a very cool looking car, but it doesn’t look like a Corvette. The C8 finished what the C7 started
To me if you skip a generation of corvette they always look radically different c1-c3 c2-c4 c3-c5 etc. The c7 was a huge jump, but still recognizably corvette. My point being all corvettes look radically different its origins.
greenmondaymorning I just wished the c7 didn’t look so much like a “transformer”. At the very least I wish they would’ve kept the circular taillights.
That being said, the C7 was the last gasp of the old Corvette heritage especially being the last manual optioned one
The fact that it looks like a super car, for Corvette money, is why its so awesome
I think I’d like the wedge minimised even more, so it could be extended over models evolution, but as usual, it takes a car uber fan with his taste, DNA and education like Chip Foose to show us what can be done with a car. Chip, you are just everything a really first rate industrial designer is. You can discuss the reasons, the way design works, yet you can also just say here it is and it all still makes sense. You’re a live in National Treasure, and a credit to your profession and especially your Dad.
The back is so much better. I've always thought the C8 looks disjointed.
his version looks like an aventador lol
And the C8 does look like a corvette lol
@@marcforget33 agreed lmao
GM, you dropped the ball, and Chip picked it up and scored a touchdown. Amazing.
The factory design looks like "just another Japanese car" ... Visually, there is nothing exciting going on. Even though the drive train may be exceptional, without something to catch your eye and create a desire to drive ... one would never know. Chip, as usual you take the plain and mundane and bring it to life. Thank you for your many years of vision and hard work.
During the video all I can say was "AMEN" he was spot on about everything. CHEVROLET, call this man!
