Redesigning the soft lines of the Chevrolet C5 Corvette | Chip Foose Draws a Car - Ep. 2

  • The C5 Corvette has established itself as a performance bargain, but few have ever praised its styling as the best-looking Corvette. To see what might be possible with this 21st-century fiberglass sports car, we asked Chip Foose for his take on the design. With ballpoint pen and a few markers in hand, Chip sketches out his vision about how to sharpen the soft lines of the C5.

Chip, I am 72 and a C5 convertible owner. I tried to visit your shop late last year but cI was too early, to my dismay.I am a part-time car drawer and love your C5 rendition. If not for my age and financial status I would be all over you and your shop to "make it mine". You are the best and I respect how to educate and give back to the automotive industry! I was offered a scholarship back in the late 60's to Art Center and it is my number one regret, maybe I could have worked for you.

What a brilliant designer! Loved this guy's work ever since i saw the first OverHaulin' show. And with the show, I learned to like him as a car guy and just being a nice person overall. So to go back to what he does, you can see his designs are well balanced. While I don't agree with everything he does (matter of taste obviously) he is a guy who could well have worked for a big outfit like GM or any other manufacturer but wouldn't have been happy there. Good thing you chose to do your own stuff Chip. Keep on doing it! Thanks for showing how you do it too!

@H D I remember one episode of Overhaulin' where he visited a children s hospital and asks some girl undergoing cancer treatment what her favorite car is. MUSTANG! She says, so Chip puts a piece of paper down in front of her and starts rendering a perfect illustration of a hot rod mustang right before her eyes. Oh, BTW... One small detail.. He's drawing the picture upside-down, so the little girl has the proper perspective the entire time. Mind BLOWN!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I smiled all the way through it. Chip is one of the guys you are lucky to meet. What an artist. I'm a Vette nut and I had a supercharged C5. I totaled it. Car guys can see what they want usually, but the concept of building your own body mods? Leave it to Mr Foose.

C5 Corvette is the best looking and performing sports car in the world if you take into account judging it as a classic..it still looks great today. I'm surprised Foose says he not a fan of the design..I mean look at the black C5 in the photo..a C5 coupe with targa top..wow. it's a car built in the 1990's and it still looks great today..that's a classic..also dont take a coupe and make a convertible..you have to go like for like. . Isnt Chip just doing a Calloway design? Chips version looks cool ..but better than the original C5 coupe? No..

Needless to say Chip Foose has a different perspective on the C5 Corvette and the drawing looks more of a car from the 80’s era tv show the A-Team. I personally like the GM design as well as the side markers GM designed. Chip Foose has done great work on designs however Dave Kindig is so underrated. That’s my perspective.

Kindig is more into bold hot-rodding classic designs and Foose makes just about anything look modern and look good. There are many other great car designers and customizers out there, but from the ones I have seen and know, they're both at the top of my list.

When going from a conceptual drawing to actually making the vehicle, what do you do if the cockpit area is entirely different from the donor vehicle? I understand all the other panels, but I've never understood how builders go about doing doors, pillars, and glass. To me, logically thinking, all of that would have to be new frame, similar to what Vayder did with the g35 kit.
Is this generally the process of cars this custom, use the mechanicals and subframe, but build an entirely new body frame that acts as a proper skeleton for all of the new panels? How would you take a custom frame, which is typically tube from what I've seen, and attach paneling, both exterior and interior, to make it look OEM? How would you go about moving/modifying bumpers and crumple zones to keep OEM safety?
What about custom glass, what's the process of that? Both for the main windshield and side glass pieces.
What if the custom vehicle is overall wider, how would you go about modifying subframes and/or suspension geometry to allow for these changes?
I've been interested in custom vehicles, but nobody really shows the process in a timely manner, or their full rebuild is too close to OEM to show these techniques, or they're using a kit to turn a car into another car, etc. I want to see something like this, stock C5 transformed into this redesign of the C5, detailing every process from start to finish, while making the finished product look entirely like it came from the factory as that vehicle.

I appreciated that he imparted some of his training , so I could learn a bit while watching.. Personally, I prefer the more organic and sensuous round body shapes of the classics over hard edged aggressive styles, but that's modernity for you. To develop some history of the round C5 shape, consider the previous model, that almost killed the corvette brand with dismal sales, , the C4. It was a straight wedge body, and I am sure GM wanted the "all new" corvette to look very different than the car that took a lot of changes to get it to sell.
The wedge shape was more aerodynamic in a straight line, but the C5 had more advanced wind tunnel and aero testing so is better aerodynamically in cross winds, like when cornering , so the rounded body of the C5 is actually better aerodynamically overall, except in a head wind.
As for the bloated rear end, the trunk has to hold two golf bags, and modern golf bags can get big.

Thanks for adding them “gills” Back on design. The only element that are visually needed to finalize it’s shape would be the ‘humped’ forward wheel fenders like on the C3. I see the bringing back of the ‘90s firebird rear deck. Nice touch. Now onto the C6.
