  • Dr. Samba Gadjigo, the director of the documentary Sembene!, discusses growing up in Senegal, the challenges and opportunities of African cinema, and the inspiring author, filmmaker, and cultural change maker, Ousmane Sembene.
Ousmane Sembene, considered the father of African cinema, used film to confront oppression, corruption and racial and economic inequality. His stories promoted freedom, unity and women’s empowerment. A fearless artist, Sembene used tools new to Africa-the tools of filmmaking-to explore Africa's past and suggest a brighter future. His controversial works were often banned by authorities. Though lack of access to homegrown cinema for Africans persists today, Gadjigo and his creative partner Jason Silverman have begun envisioning ways for Africans to reconnect around Sembene’s films and other new and classic African movies. By leveraging new technologies, they believe Africans can reclaim their stories and strengthen their communities.

A mere 2677 views? Criminal, considering how incredibly fascinating Samba's talk is in this video. His journey is utterly gripping and he is a natural storyteller. Thanks for moderating Ousmane Loum!

Thank you for a great conversation. Can never have enough of Sembene. Because everytime, I hear something new, inspirational and challenging. Great interview. So cool you took us through Samba's journey Found it very helpful, I think young people may find that background even more helpful in appreciating yesterday's experience and why what Sembene did is revolutionary.
Only humble tech suggestion is that subsequent interviews, if it's not too much trouble, use two cameras. That helps connect us emotionally to the person speaking, yes, keep the wide every now and then but especially where someone talks for long without talking, they dont have to look redundant, but also connecting us more to the speakers.
I would have loved to get a close up of Samba when he was talking about his childhood experience. Taking a train for the first time, e.t.c. Of course the audience reactions indicate there is more than one camera. Incidentally we had tighter shots of the audience reaction, guess the interest of getting a wide deprived is the opportunity to get guest close ups and therefore less exploration of emotional connection.
    Otherwise, great conversation thank you.
