- Sometimes with our landscape photography, all the stars align and we just get plain old good luck. This was one of those day recently in the Lake District National Park when I was out with a friend. We were at this particular location to shoot the woodland located nearby but couldn't believe our luck when we noticed mist clinging to the heath nearby. Out we went, cameras in hand like to children in a candy store. The thumbnail shown here isn't my best shot by any means, you will need to watch the video to see that one.

I preferred the first image of the two, however the fern image was the star of the show!
Number 2 is my favorite. I like green and fern. With your editing it looks great.
For me. The 2nd tree. Always a privilege to watch your videos.

both tree shots are lovely but I prefer the composition on the first one. Also the ferns are gorgeous.

The Scotland trip didn’t shine the same amount of good fortune. Those images are fairly infrequent in my outings.

All shots are wonderful, but I do like the 4th pano shot. It's really extraordinary.

The version with the tree in the center really speaks to me. I know the rules, but this works really well with the branches arching over the whole frame and the tree in the middle. I really love it!
There’s always the rule of symmetry to fall back on.

The fern is the star of the show for me. I prefer the first image of the last tree. As always, a nice video. I can well imagine that you would have had a more relaxing weekend not having to worry too much about needing to create content for you tube.
It was certainly easier not having to make a video at the same time.

I prefer the tree off to the left, more mist around and I am not bothered about the small tree in the background. As usual though Simon I love them all.

Interesting that the fern leaf that had grabbed my attention as you came closer to the bunch in the second image, was the same one that struck you. It wasn't because I'd noticed it being lighter, it just spoke out through the video! That I find quite amazing. . . . . The second of the tree images I enjoyed more both tonally and compositionally. Thanks so much for sharing those little snippets of what sounds like a fabulous weekend.

Hi Simon I prefer the second image as I felt it was more balanced. It was nice to hear the trill of a Wood Warbler in the first sequence, I've not heard one for a couple of years

Loved the fern, Simon. Very different to what we have here in southern Oz. Noticed it has two little fronds at the foot of the whole frond which some others here don‘t have. I liked all the tree images, but found a slight preference to the tree on the left. I felt there was just enough separation from that little tree on the right. The mist and a little more light got to me in that photo!
I think I like both versions of the tree looking back on it now. In terms of the fern, I have to confess I forgot to look it up.
Greetings, Simon. Of those last two images, I prefer the first. The second one is nice also, but I'm annoyed by that small tree being partially blocked by the big one. The fern image is superb.

what a fantastic idea (at 13:10) - I'm definitely making one of those. I really miss having a 65x24 AR on my Fujifilm X-H2. when i had my medium format Fujis they had that crop built in. there are more than enough megapixels on the X-H2 to incorporate it.
your fern image reminded me of a much more inferior one i made of some ferns in my garden last summer. I'll have to dig it out 🙂
re the trees - it's the pano image that gets my vote
I do wonder whether a 3-D printer Wood would do a better job, but I just don’t know anybody with one to be able to try it.
I liked the second tree, but I am biased toward warmer tones. However the fern shot is stunning.

Love all of them. I did notice (as my eyes were drawn straight to it) in the first image at the bottom what looks like a square (as if cloned badly!) is it my eyes? I really can't imagine you wouldn't have spotted it., so I'm assuming it is me or my iMac screen. Looking forward to the Scottish video. Take Care Simon.

Ive just reviewed the film and I think I know what you are seeing but I can confirm I haven’t cloned this image.
I think the second shot (ferns) looks better if rotated anti clockwise 90 degrees so it is a portrait format image.
These things are always going to be a matter of personal choice.

As always, you managed to create very elegant compositions and beautiful presentation of the scenes. Ad for the tree, both version are very beautiful, but I prefer the centered one as I like seeing each side of the tree and the cool light is actually quite pleasing.
The centred one is my preferred option too
Love your channel Simon, mostly because of the way you capture beautiful, intimate landscapes and macros. I think all these images are superb but as far as the two tree images go, I prefer the first one. I have a personal preference for using a Daylight White Balance with images that feature a lot of green shades, especially when the conditions are overcast/shade and especially when they include mist/fog.

The pano framing aid is a great idea. What aspect ratio is it? I am already searching for cardboard, ruler, exacto knife and gaffer’s tape.
Its probably a 2:1, but there was no science involved 😊
Some lovely shots, have you considered trying a Fujifilm camera that has built in aspect ratios?
I have Dennis, I’m just not in a financial position to change systems.
