Just a comment on the pier and the tree. The image taken from the video (with the pier and the tree branches angled from left to right) was more stunning that the shots you took with the pier extending out into the water at a near perpendicular angle to the shore line. Great images!
Hey Simon. Lovely to see another video from you Buddy. Lovely also, to see you out, taking conventional landscapes which completely compliments. Your more Macro view of the world. Simply awesome to see you being considerate to other photographers out in the field by whispering. This is something that I probably have to get better at a sometimes whilst the way that it can be distracting for others, I am often not as respectful as you are in the field. Well done! Your images are simply awesome, and that last one of the panel of the trees… Simply… Sublime, Symon! That is one beautiful image, and that definitely needs to be printed. You see, you have not lost your touch with the landscape stuff. Nice to catch up on the phone the other night. We will speak soon
Cheers Ewan Typical me whispering 😊. Someone else here asked why I felt the need to whisper. I guess I’m always concerned about what others might think of me. I need to care less sometimes? Thanks for your feedback. The last image was definitely my best work on this film and I’d love to get more like it and got a great deal on f satisfaction from crafting it. I think it needs a tad cropping off the left looking back, but that’s easy enough to fix. The others were ok in my view and certainly worthy of inclusion in the film. We can’t get bangers every time, not with the bigger view at least. The smaller scenes come much easier to me I feel. Yes, thanks for the chat. It was lovely sharing all my personal issues with you 😂
Hey Simon, great shakeup for the film. I really enjoyed watching you chase the light and do more broader landscapes as opposed to your bread and butter intimate scenes. It’s a shame about the pier shot. I actually think your video composition when we first see the scene was closer to what I thought you would shoot. Loved the 16x9 of the larch. Wonderful conditions and excellent day of photography. Cheers!
I liked the video composition of the jetty more then the photo you took, with a longer length I think there is a photo there, like the video, great work
Hello Simon You had realy amazing conditions at that day. Every image is worth to be shown and to be seen. At 2:02 as you entering the scene, I thought this tree would be worth to shoot and you have taken it. Thanks :-). Grt Ernesto
Simon you're becoming one of my top five photography YT channels, keep up the excellent work and thank you for bringing up along... The story and the images are wonderful.
The video of the jetty and tree looked like a real winner- but I agree the actual still didn't cut it. Strange juxtaposition is indeed the word. Next, island with the fence, then the 'pano' at the end. Great stuff Simon!
Fantastic images Simon! Some of your best wider landscapes. Those conditions must have been a thrill to see in person. You've captured it incredibly well. Keep up the good work and great films1 Cheers!
It certainly was a thrill Alan. That being said making a video and trying to photograph those conditions is not the easiest and most relaxing thing I ever get to do.
The first image of the island and ducks is striking. And the last image caught the light perfectly resulting in a lovely painterly quality. The entire session was quite successful.
Stunning to say the Least! All of these shots were Amazing! This morning's shoot makes up for all of those other times the conditions and surroundings weren't ideal. Thank you, Simon!
At 2:03 in the video I was yelling that where the video camera was pointing was a perfect shot. Pier going left to right with the branches of that tree framing it nicely and the reflection of the pier balancing the bottom. Banger conditions for sure. Thanks for the vids and inspiration.
Great video and images Simon. It was great meeting you that day and I was wondering if you were going to include images of the island. It was nice to see your take on a fairly well known spot. And of course some more inspirational woodland images.
Some great images Simon - well done!! I agree re the first image with jetty ….. I think the video scene with it coming in from the side was better …. I think when you look straight down a jetty, it needs to be the dominant subject…. Otherwise if it is to complement another subject it needs to be a diagonal element
Great conditions you found there Simon. With superb photos to follow. I especially like the silver birch, with its siblings disappearing to the right in the fog.
Superb images Simon as always. Agree with you the image of the jetty and tree has too many competing elements. Really love the little island especially the ducks, which balance the image. Lucky you fabulous location and the right weather conditions. More please.
Simon its a nice change to see you in the grand landscape. You took full advantage of the wonderful conditions you were given. I agree with you on the B&W image that it just doesn’t work. The rest however are marvelous. Well done.
Thanks Jim. I do intend to get out shooting the big investors more frequently, but that’s always at the condition that the weather is suitable for such visitors.
You got some beautiful images, Simon. I think the first shot was better from the video position, when you moved to exclude the greenery, you lost the reflections of the jetty, which in my mind, made it too rigid against the tree and conditions. The island is beautiful and I love the last two. You had a lovely morning, thanks for taking us along.
@@SimonBoothPhotographyyour head was already elsewhere. When you said 'I'm missing other opportunities', that was the sign. There's plenty of other times to work it again, I'll be interested to see that tree pop up again 😊
Simon, this is a set of some of the most stunning woodland images. Each one is so well composed and the light you capture works so well. Thank you for a truly stimulating video.
Interesting that you say proper composition. I can’t say is I’ve seen any pictures of that jetty or Tree but being in the Lake District I’m sure there are many it’s just not something I came across as I researched the location.
Sorry I need clarify, I meant proper composition in general, (like following the rules of a balanced composition in every way), I wasn't referring to other photos of this particular subject you photographed. @@SimonBoothPhotography
Another wonderful video! I love the images - they are full of interest without being overly busy. Your images never scream at the viewer but bring him into the composition. Also I like watching the process of you compositions. Perhaps you could say something about the post processing to bring out the wonderful light. Thanks.
I agree Nick that point at which I walked into the scene with a dick with a jetty on the tree off to the left. Certainly looked far better but then without me in it it would’ve had a lot of negative space that I’m not sure I would’ve actually worked in this instance.
Hi Simon, really lovely images, the last two in particular are very emotive. There's something about the second last one that has 3D depth. I know your 645Z is getting on but that sensors dynamic range is still as good as it gets.
I agree with you Tom on the 645z. It easily holds its own in terms of image quality and I do love how it feels like a proper camera. I suppose I just wish it had a couple of bells and whistles. A larger LCD screen being one of them.
It would be handy to know somebody with a 3-D printer for this sort of thing. My little box that I made is ideal but I’m not overly convinced it’s very durable.
The tree and dock are nice... looks like you even managed to have a small bird land on a branch too... They might be competing... or they might be the juxtaposition of man made and nature supplied 🙂 B/W is best, although I see a hint of blue in you shared file... I would not toss it away 🙂 Lots of possibilities with that water fence and island... wow you sure had the good fortune of ever changing/different and wonderful light on this day 🙂
Hello again Simon, thank you for another beautiful video. The conditions were on your side in this video, happy for you. In the first image I agree with you, the tree and the pier would make a better image one by one but they didn't go well together. On the other hand, in the B-roll the composition looked much better from where you placed your video camera. I love every bit of the second image. Those ducks were just at the right place at the right time. I really really like the other images too. Sometimes I feel very jealous because here where I live there are many wild animals around like bears, wolves, boars so I don't feel safe to go to woodland alone. I admire the wildlife but wandering around with no worry would be amazing too :) Anyway, keep up the good work, you inspire me.
I do get a lot of comments about the fact that we are able to wander around the countryside without fear of being eaten, and also the smaller things like bugs, spiders etc, how none of those in the UK can’t do a huge amount of harm to the same degree, as in other parts of the world. I suppose I take it for granted.
Simon, Happy New Year! You sure did fall into some perfect conditions. A photographers dream…. Your first shot of the dock with the tree that did not work, I agree it was the wrong angle. But in you “B” roll leading up to it, I thought the composition should have been the tree in front of the dock as the dock was positioned moving from left to right out in to the nothingness. Did you consider this composition/perspective? Otherwise, beautiful shots! Thank you for sharing and as always, keep snapping!
Such a beautiful tranquil landscape area, some of your second and third images are wonderful with super smooth reflection and fog/clouds in the skiy,, while I liked your first image wity the tree and dock I agree in that there was something about the composition which didn't quite work for me, can't blame you for trying that one though ,, first time viewing your channel and I like your work so far
Thank you so much Jim for watching the video and I certainly hope you have subscribed and rung the bell for those notifications. Yes I had a wonderful morning. The conditions were just perfect. Not something I come to expect very often, but it’s so nice when they do.
Simon, you got 5 spectacular shots in one outing! Well done. I like the first shot of the island with the ducks. I agree with your assessment of the very first shot that you did not include - the dock and tree. As you were describing the shot, I thought, like you, it was going to be a really interesting photo. But when you showed the final shot you captured, it did not work - the two subjects were competing with each other. As always, enjoyed the video.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I was aware of the rock when I was doing the processing, but I really fell out of love with this image and spent as little time as possible when I was editing it. It just wasn’t doing it for me.
On the dock and tree scene, I thought you'd also shoot the scene you got on video at 2:00. If nothing else, I think it looked wonderful with you in the frame to the right.
Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. In terms of that first image, I’m not sure I’m fond of it enough to spend any more time with it on the computer sometimes images just grab you and others just don’t. I’m afraid this one really didn’t do it for me.
I regard the B&W of tree and dock as a very good composition. Sometimes the subject isn't what you look at, but what you viscerally sense. There's a small round object on the right that does a lot of work in the composition, and it alone saves the image. It pulls you off the subject. Btw, if you ever do a book ala Tom Heaton, the title should be "Earth Tones".
Wow what stunning conditions you had. Regarding the first image, do you think in hindsight it would have been better to include the tree on the left, perhaps to give better balance? Or was it just too distracting / messy? As always, a fabulous video Simon with beautiful images. Thank you.
Hi Barry, that tree on the left was a holly tree. And Hollie trees don’t easily lend themselves to great images when they’re fairly close to the camera and especially not when they are silhouetted. They often end up is just dark areas within the frame. I think if I do move to the right and allow them to come together the shot might have worked better. To be fair, I really wanted to be elsewhere and probably shouldn’t of even bothered with this location without giving it the time it probably deserved
Thanks for the excellent video Simon. Re the jetty and the tree image I agree. When I was watching you composing it I was excited to see the final image; however there was a slight sense of disappointment when I saw the image. I wonder why this happens when it is the same scene we were looking at? Cracking images otherwise. Can I just say that I would be more than happy to have photographed even your "cast-offs". Kind regards Robin
Thanks Robin, I think with that first image, it was a case of getting too carried away too easily at the beginning of the day. Sometimes things that appear to be fantastic to the naked eye are often disappointing when they are photographed, I think in the case of this image, it’s because there is no depth to the image, and it’s very very flat and two-dimensional, and with the two elements working against one another it really doesn’t work.
An amazing time in an amazing place. Otter island is one of my favourite images but it was taken before I learned about shooting in RAW, so the processing is limited. I have been back three times and never had anything like the 'good' conditions. Very jealous of you Simon! Thanks for sharing, you swine.
Stunning shots as usual Simon. Just a question about the camera you used. You recently bought into the Nikon Z system, but I think this time you chose a different system. Every system has good and bad points. So, just wanted to know if the subject matter/ conditions or your available Z lenses were the reason for your choice. Thanks so much for your time and passing on your knowledge in these videos. Take care. Ross (Hiroshima)
Regarding your first shot of the oak tree and the pier extending into the fog, I thought the B-roll camera position as you walked into the scene was much better. Although there was a pine tree to the left, from this angle the oak tree was above and framed the pier rather than the two subjects being side-by-side as in the image you did shoot.
I agree Douglas, but I think from the morning I was keen to get elsewhere and carry on exploring into the woodland and I probably didn’t give this scene the attention it probably could’ve done with. I agree however, the position of the video camera was much nicer by comparison.
The jetty and tree looked so much nicer when you approached from an angle, with the jetty on a 3/4 view. obviously you weren't able to compose it that way successfully.
Good morning, I’ve possibly could have positioned it on that angle in hindsight, but to be fair I think I was in a rush to be in other parts of the area.
About the oak & the jetty: I agree, but when you where walking to it from the right bank, i saw the tree arching over the jetty beautifully. Could there be a great composition from that right side?
The way the jetty and tree were framed up on the video camera looked fantastic but in the still image the tree seemed distorted, the wide angle lens?, also there was a small rock or something to the right in the water which upset the balance. The rest of the images were sublime as I have come to expect from you.
I think with the conditions being the way they were, I was very mindful at the time of spending too much time with this scene and wanting to move on to other parts of the woodland the appeal to me more. I recall being concerned that the fog would move on before I had chance to really make the most of it, which in the end wasn’t the case.
Good morning Dave. Ice and fog are certainly a great recipe for beautiful conditions. I only wish we’d of had those as well. Sadly, we don’t get too much in the way of snowfall and ice in our part of the world, and when it does come, he doesn’t last very long.
I wonder if the first shot with the jetty/dock and tree would work better with the angle from the video camera where both the dock and the tree pointed to the same spot at infinity?
Hi Bill, a few people have commented to the same effect and I completely agree with you. When I made the video, I was much happier with where the video camera was sat as I walked into the composition the jetty and the tree seem to come together much better. I think to be honest I was in a rush to be elsewhere on that morning and didn’t give it the time probably deserved. Thanks for watching.
Just a comment on the pier and the tree. The image taken from the video (with the pier and the tree branches angled from left to right) was more stunning that the shots you took with the pier extending out into the water at a near perpendicular angle to the shore line. Great images!

I love the portrait shot on Derwentwater, was that taken besides Friars Crag Simon. Just so calm and tranquil. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Nick
Hi Nick
This was the south end. I think Friars Crag in to the north. Thank you though 🙏
Great video, lovely conditions. Especially enjoyed the bodged letterbox. Do you suppose that I could get one on eBay?😂
If it wasn’t so terribly made quite possibly. In all seriousness, I think this would make a great little bit of kit, if it could be 3-D printed.
An amazing time in an amazing place. Otter island is one of my favourite images but it was taken before I learned about shooting in RAW, so the processing is limited. I have been back three times and never had anything like the 'good' conditions. Very jealous of you Simon! Thanks for sharing, you swine.
I’d heard of otter island but I had no clue this was it until you said so ☺️
I only know cause it is marked on the OS map. That side of Derwent Water is sublime. Must get back up to the Lakes in 2024.
Agree with jetty and tree, either one or the other, not both
Stunning shots as usual Simon.
Take care.

Hi Ross
My camera is the Pentax 645z. I’ve had this around three years now. Thanks for watching
Good morning, I’ve possibly could have positioned it on that angle in hindsight, but to be fair I think I was in a rush to be in other parts of the area.
nice one stunning images - how long did it take to get the five images start to finish - nice conditions with some great compositions and tones
I seem to recall I was done for lunchtime. Cheers Pat
About the oak & the jetty:
I agree, but when you where walking to it from the right bank, i saw the tree arching over the jetty beautifully.
Could there be a great composition from that right side?
Possibly but I did balance the scene out
The way the jetty and tree were framed up on the video camera looked fantastic but in the still image the tree seemed distorted, the wide angle lens?, also there was a small rock or something to the right in the water which upset the balance.
Hi Simon... we have fog this morning in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada... an ice fog 🙂
It depends on what your mood is.
agree re jetty and tree, also jetty verticals look off
