    Good to see this type of thing making its way into VR. One of my biggest issues with VR is the lack of awareness outside of the headset. This helps with that. I think something like this needs to be implemented in VR out of the box. Probably will be in the future, but for now this is a good solution/stepping stone. Thanks for the video and Merry Xmas.

    My wife and I just got the MQ3 and are following your tutorial to set it up. Had to buy Virtual Desktop and Reality Mixer but they weren't expensive. I think we're about ready now and hopefully tomorrow we'll be flying our Fokker D7F sim pod in Passthrough VR with IL2 Sturmovik Flying Circus. We like the WW1 kites. 😊 Stand-buy for what promises to be some very interesting in-cockpit views of these VR dogfights. And thanks for your efforts in producing this video; it's been a lot of help. Cheers!

      I tried experimenting with colors a little closer to black and it starts to key out all of the similar colors on screen, making little "invisible" blotches all over the cockpit. It also works well with purples and pinks, but I went with bright green.

    Thanks again, I found it once I went through the headset. Got VD and Reality Mixer running and managed to setup three boxes as I needed which was great BUT when I started MSFS it said syncing data for quite a while so I quit that and launched X plane which ran OK and here is the BUT, my three boxes turned solid green. I re-run RM but they still stayed green. Once everything is running ok, hopefully with your help, would I be able to connect with the link cable to my pc? Many thanks for your patience.

    • @LazerboltVids
      @LazerboltVids  5 місяців тому

      Glad to help. I get the solid green boxes issue if I take off the headset for a moment. The only fix for this is to exit Steam VR and re-launch it and RM. You should be able to re-connect to MSFS at this point, but most other games will have to be re-started. I don't think there is a way to use a link cable with this because Virtual Desktop replaces it and airlink.

    Thanks, I did get it working but I think it was to do with my WIFI signal. Unfortunately my router is downstairs so I cannot easily connect a ethernet cable so I might use though extenders which connect to mains electric sockets and pass the signal through the mains wiring from the router to the PC. Do you have any thoughts on that? One other question is the green boxes sometimes move out of position a little, all three are correctly aligned to each other and move as one if that makes sense. Is there away to lock their position or is it just a case of editing them in RM? I am Ron and once again I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

    • @LazerboltVids
      @LazerboltVids  5 місяців тому

      I've never used Internet through mains before, but I would be interested in hearing if it works for you. Not sure if there is a better way, but you might have to just re-adjust your camera boxes by hand periodically.

  • @Redridge07

    This is a good video. So if your setup is not permanent, you have to setup in the boxes each time?

    • @LazerboltVids
      @LazerboltVids  5 місяців тому

      Reality Mixer will always display camera boxes in the same place, so if you move anything, the camera just stays in the same place. There is a way to attach a tracker to an object and then the camera will move along with the object (like a keyboard or something)
      Luckily its very easy to make adjustments if your camera is no longer displaying the proper stuff.

I followed what you said in your video (which is great because you talk at a normal rate unlike some) but when I wen to the store from within my headset and searched for VD it did not find it. It found a couple of others but not VD. Therefore I did try the one from Steam and I noticed that it said NOT for Quest etc but assumed as it could not be found on Oculus store that it had to be that one, WRONG as I now know. When browsing the web I came across a number of comments which say it was removed in 2021 at the request of Facebook!!! I am stumped hope you can help please.

      I still think that the issue is that you're looking for Virtual Desktop on the PC VERSION of the Oculus store. You need to COMPLETELY disconnect from your pc (meaning no link cable or airlink) and search the stand alone, in-headset version of the Oculus store. Only AFTER you have Virtual Desktop installed ON THE QUEST 3 HEADSET will you use VD to connect to your pc INSTEAD of a link cable or air link. Please let me know if this helps

    Thanks for the video. I need your advice as firstly I had to download Virtual Desktop from steam on my PC as it did not show up searching Oculus store and then downloaded Reality Mixer from Steam. Secondly, when I run VD from my Quest 3 the opening screen is different to yours in as much menu selection items are down the left side of the window, mine run across the top of the window, also there is no streaming option or VR pass trough or configure boxes/buttons. Therefore I cannot get to the VR pass through configuration window. I am using Windows 11 fully updated and all programs work including MSFS 2020 without any glitches. I take it that you can set it up without flightsim running. Sorry it is a long message, can you please advise? Any help would be very much appreciated 😒

      You need to install Virtual Desktop directly onto your Quest 3 instead of installing it on your pc from Steam. Just search for it in the "in headset" store like the video shows. The version of Virtual Desktop found on Steam even says "not for Quest headsets"

    • @MikeSwanberg
      @MikeSwanberg 6 місяців тому

      @@LazerboltVids If Virtual Desktop would just allow a cabled connection, I think it would be unstoppable. As it is, unless you have a powerful wifi router (which I don't) that's dedicated ONLY for connecting your headset to your VR PC (which I haven't), the cable is much faster... and even if you have those things, the cable is likely to still be faster. As it is, the standard Oculus tool, using a cable, is a far superior experience for me in DCS and MSFS2020 and X-Plane 12. Steam Link might be a good alternative, but Steam's VR stuff tends to be bloated and bogged down. And, as I said, I don't have an option to turn on pass-through in Steam VR. Probably a setting somewhere... my VR knowledge does not go that deep.

      Hi Max, below are the steps I take to fly in VR using Reality Mixer: Also, this video shows how I launch MSFS and VR: ua-cam.com/video/Iuf84-9bqS4/v-deo.html
      1. Flight sim is already running and in-flight
      2. Put on the Quest3 (no link cable or airlink) and launch Virtual Desktop.
      3. On my PC desktop (which I can now see in Virtual Desktop) launch Reality Mixer on Steam. This will automatically launch Steam VR as well.
      4. Make sure Reality Mixer shows the things you intend to see in mixed reality.
      5. Make MSFS the active window by clicking on its tab. you should see MSFS in a "flat screen" in your headset
      6. Press the button that you have set-up as "activate/deactivate VR" . you can bind this to any key in the flight sim options.
      7. You are now in full VR. Look straight ahead and press the "camera re-set" button that you bind in the same menu as in step 6
      8. Enjoy the magic

      @@LouisianaRAPTER I haven't tried running Virtual Desktop while using a cable. But I suspect that you can't use them together because each is meant to replace the other.

      I have a quite similar problem. Msfs2020 works with Vdxr but not with VD steamvr. When I switch to vr, monitor changes to 2 eyes, but steam vr keeps on "starting"... Any ideas?
      Works great with dcs or ams2

      I re-installed the sim. Now steamvr works, but in the VD version it stutters extremely when I love my head even with 40 fps w/o asw activated.
      Curiously VDXR works and steam link also. Only VD on steamvr runtime has this problem....

      @@Windsurfer7607 I got it to sorta work by: 1. select SteamVR as API in VD. 2. In SteamVR, disable the OpenXR Toolkit API layer. 3. Launch MSFS up to fully in cockpit (after clicking "Fly" button) 4. Go back into SteamVR app and launch RealityMixer 5. Back to MSFS and switch to VR mode. NOTE: BECAUSE OF STEP #2, I'M NOT ABLE TO RUN OPENXR TOOLKIT AT THE SAME TIME AS REALITYMIXER. I can get OpenXR Toolkit back if I re-enable the API layer in SteamVR, but then RealityMixer won't work. It's either-or for me. I love the idea of RealityMixer and will keep an eye on it, but for now I think I might go without it until it gets some more updates (compatibility with OpenXR most importantly, use of webcams and better box tracking would be bonus points). Right now I'm getting way better performance selecting the SteamVR API within VD. The VDXR option is producing some weird tearing at the edges of the display whenever I quickly move my head...it almost looks like a sliver of pass-through on the farthest right/left hand side when moving my head side to side.

      Your MSFS seems to use another OpenXR runtime, not Steam's. You need the Steam OpenXR runtime to use Reality Mixer.

      @@RealityInside That was it!! I changed from VDXR to SteamVR in Virtual Desktop setup and it worked!! Wrong way around. Why can't I have have a virtual representation of my devices inside the cockpit? It would not be a grainy image but a quality 3d render.
    Next step... Physical devices become just tactile stand-ins for the visible virtual device.
    Then once trackers are more common each device can be moved and tracked.

      You totally missed the point. It's not so much about being able to SEE stuff as it is to INTERACT with real world controls. In a real cockpit you're using your hands to turn knobs and flip switches, not figuring just how to point a fiddly VR controller.
