1. You don't have to get all the items at one go. Just start with one item that you think you'll need first or want to try first. Personally, I started with a coloured lip gloss. You can slowly add to your makeup bag. 2. Remember less is more. Every generation of women has learned this the hard way. 😆 Start by applying with a light hand under natural light. You can always build it up. 3. Hygiene is important, especially with eye products. You should wash your brushes and sponges regularly. Mascara must be thrown out every 3-6 months, even if you haven't finished the whole tube. Bacteria on your makeup tools and products can cause serious infections. 4. Makeup is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy food, get enough sleep, exercise, don't smoke, drink in moderation, take care of your skin and teeth. You'll feel much better physically and mentally - and save money because you don't have to buy expensive products to cover up the damage.
As a teen starting to build interest in make up, I think I've found the right channel. Haley, I love how you reccommend only the essential products in the affordable range keeping the beginners in mind. As a beginner I highly appreciate ur efforts and how you create stunning make up looks only using minimal amounts of makeup. I look forward to ur videos every sunday. Keep growing and keep slaying.
May I give you some recommendations? As a teen, your hormones are still all over the place, so please keep your make-up as little as possible to prevent breakouts. Besides, your youth is the best make up that no skin care products can beat!! You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to reverse the damages you did in your late 20s. Trust me!!!
You’re so lucky we’re now in the minimalistic phase. When I was in my teens, photoshoot ready, heavy makeup, full face beat was popular 😖 people wore contour, full coverage foundation and fake lashes for everyday, getting ready was so much work!
I’m 29 and never wear makeup, but I like the idea of wearing makeup for special occasions. Usually I have someone else do it for me, but I feel like it’s important to have some sort of makeup skill for the rare occasions I want to do something for my face. This video and your beginning makeup tutorial is so helpful!
Great idea! It’s such a great fun once you do makeup just for yourself! Just please remember that makeup has an expiration date, and using old makeup can do harm. There are certain items I do not mind using “aged” because I do not have sensitive skin, but some items you should not use after expiration date are mascara(usually 3 months) eyeliner (usually 6 months) foundation and concealer(usually 12 months). Those can give you eye infection and acne. You can find an expiration date on tour container. It looks like a little jar with a number in it (and often letter M for Months) this is the time after the opening the product preservatives are protecting the formula. This is not to say that other expired products won’t hurt you, but I think most people doing makeup regularly have some old eyeshadow palettes or brow products etc, those tend to have stronger preservatives and last ages, I have the same eyeshadow palette for few years now and a brow product that seems to not want to end, so I am guilty of that. If you know that you are not likely to finish your mascara I recommend getting mini version. They are more expensive per amount you get, but if you are unlikely to finish it, and have to throw away rest after 3 months then it’s saving you money.
If you have oily skin (like me) and notice your foundation or concealer rubbing off from your nose, forehead and eye area, try using a thin layer of an eye primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion or ELF Shadow Lock under these products and set with a tiny bit of powder. It really helps!
@@umbrachris2455 the wipes personally rub it more even when I gently press :( I can only use the wipes on spots without makeup on them besides like powder at most
I love that you label foundation as non-essential. I have very strong freckles on my face and foundation makes them look cloudy, so I generally dont wear it at all. I definitely believe this is part of the reason my skin is in such good shape now in my 30s!
As a 15 year old who is trying to understand this things in a more easy way your video really helped me because i was going to buy foundation even tho i never used it and have no idea how to use it properly. Really appreciate your help sis! ♥️
I can’t tell you how much I needed (and still need!!) a video like this. Compared to all my friends who started getting into makeup in our teenage years, I have never been interested and felt quite lost when I had to build a makeup kit for myself in uni. Your makeup philosophy aligns EXACTLY with mine and I can’t wait to re-build my kit based on this!
I think the only "must" is concealer. If you have acne, green color corrector is helpful. I agree that a heavy matte foundation is so not necessary. I wish skin tints were more of a thing! There is really no need for a beginner to go out of drugstore range, especially when brands like Colourpop regularly pop out good quality stuff. I think the fanciest I've purchased is Urban Decay (on sale) and MAC. It feels like there's a lot more pressure on teens these days to buy from even luxury brands. That was unthinkable 20 years ago.
@@superlynnieI'm white with long eyelashes and I think if I'm gonna wear makeup at all, mascara is the absolutely most important thing. If I even put concealer on it looks weird without mascara
I became interested in makeup when I was 18. I started building my makeup collection. I have tons of makeups. I'm now in my mid 20s, but I use only a few products. After I watched lots of your videos, I feel more comfortable to show my skin. Although I have more acne and dark circles, I barely use canceler. I usually just use eyebrow pencil/pen, blushes, lip products, powder. I just like to add colors to my skin to make it looks healthy. My skin feels really comfortable, and I don't need to waste 30 min to 1 hour in the morning.
all these videos about makeup make me so stressed and overwhelmed and i'm a complete beginner at it. i love how beginner-friendly you made this video i will definitely take some of these tips for my purchase tomorrow!!
i love how you look as beautiful as humanly possible. your makeup in your videos look very natural, and it gives off a message that we all are naturally beautiful, and makeups are just to enhance our features.
I love that you suggested many options, and also that you clarified that Dr Jart being a Korean brand would cater to Korean skin tones and it's very possible that most people won't find the right shade for themselves from there.
This was very helpful. My preteen is starting to get interested in makeup but also finds it very intimidating. I want her to have a good relationship with makeup and your video is so good at achieving that. Can you do another video in which you put on all the essential items you mentioned here? Thank you!
Omg this video is literally all I ever needed and wanted to hear! I just turned 26 but never had a big interest in makeup (my mom also doesn't use it) so, when I started to go out with friends or just wanted to upgrade my looks, I never knew where to start! I had to learn by myself little by little, but I'm still at the beginner level and I'm so glad that all I have are the products you listed as essential. I was always nervous about not knowing what all of those things are or their function so I stuck with the basics and you just gave me the confidence that I can pull off a nice look with a few products. You just gained a new subscriber and thank you sooo much for sharing all these tips 💖
Don't forget that you can also use medium-high coverage foundation as concealer. I find that not only it's cheaper most of the time, but usually foundation has way wider color shades, which is very good especially when you want to spot conceal
A while ago i let go of all my makeup because i was not in a good place mentally...now im interested in caring for myself again and starting to rebuild my makeup basics!!! I really needed this video!!!
this video is really THE video for beginners :')) it's always been such a question for me which products are essential and which aren't, especially that there are soo many products out there. it gets confusing for me since some others use certain products, and some don't. but gladly, this video answered it! thank you so much, Haley !!
I love begginer makeup videos, and this one was lovely! There is always more to learn and even if you do your makeup regularly, I love the soft, more natural look ❤
haley i really love your videos, since i found your channel i could feel that i can accept and even loving my own appearance without any makeup. you made me feel beautiful, love you so much💖💖💖
I've been using make up since forever and once i found out a good skin care routine my acne went away. Never used a foundation ever again and it feels amazing! Great advice!! a tinted moisturizer with SPF +30 is what all dermatologists recommend, so this was a great video!
Here in the Philippines, we use Tinted Sunscreen or BB Cream with Sun protection a lot. I personally add a very lightweight moisturizer with that sometimes.
Im a 19 year old girl, and my whole life I've never actually done proper makeup, and just this year i started getting into it. I dont know why but videos about makeup and looking pretty suddenly became so interesting to me even though I dont own any makeup. It's really strange because i didn't care about these things before and now i just can't wait to learn how to do it. Even my feet are wiggling from excitmet help!😭💓
Thank you so much for considering people might not have access to certain brand products in their country. Listing few options is really helpful for us!
I am a teenager who just turned 14 and I knew that I have to start to use some basic makeup to prepare my first high school days. As soon as I clicked this video, I knew that it was just the right channel to listen about it. I must say that Haley is very very good at recommending and giving us her opinion. Thank you!
at 55 I am by no means a beginner. However, when I started using makeup there was no UA-cam! It is interesting to be learning the basics after a lot of trial and error (and money!). Recently dark circles under my eyes is my biggest concern. I am trying color correcting then concealer. It is a learning curve...Thanks for your video!
this video is so great! i've been wanting to wear makeup to cover up some imperfections but I was afraid I would look too different with makeup on. Seeing your makeup so light and gorgeous, it's giving me hope!!
I feel very satisfied watching your video. It's exactly what I was looking for. You have mentioned all the essentials along with the brand name and the price making it so easy to search them. Thank you for your time and effort for doing this. Heart ❤️
Tinted moisturizers are hard to come by where I live, so I love mixing my foundation and my favorite moisturizer. It looks beautiful, feels very comfortable on the skin and lasts just as long in my experience.
I've only started watching your videos, and the best thing about them is that they actually feel GOOD, as opposed to some beauty-related channels I've seen. You don't assume being a woman means knowing anything about makeup, you promote a healthy relationship to our bodies and budget, and everything about your videos backs this with calm and gentleness. And I can actually relate to your community of people who don't feel the need to wear makeup everyday. Thank you for your work! 🤗
Thank you so much for this video, Haley!! You did such an amazing job breaking it all down into easily digestible bits! So so super helpful!! Can you possibly turn this into a mini series and do a follow-up video on essential vs non-essential makeup tools for beginners and a third video on how to properly care for all your makeup and tools and when it's necessary to replace them? There seem to be a million types of brushes, sponges, applicators, and other tools that I don't even know the names of, etc. 😭 Makeup products are already overwhelming on their own, but the variety in tools makes everything even more intimidating ahhhh 😭😭😭😭 Love your content!! ❤
Hi Haley, thank you so much for such informative video. One tip I would like to add for the beginners is to buy these items in travel size to save money (if the travel size is cheaper than the actual size).
Optional: Primer Foundation (buy light coverage, natural finish if necessary) Colour corrector Good to invest in: Concealer Tinted moisturizer Essential: Powder Eyeshadow palette Eyeliner Lipgloss
I've been watching your videos for a few years now and I always love listening to your calm voice and learning new things about makeup. Thank you Haley!
Thank you so much it really helped me since i am looking to buy makeup products to start learning but there were too many things but now with your help ill buy the essential ones first and rest other later..
For me after years of no using makeup. Im starting to use again and what Im getting is: Bb cream(sunscreen and improve skin texture) Lipsticks, more than one because I love them, but nothing crazy. I also use it as blush. Individual eyeshadow, two is enough, one shiny and warm, natural tone which can be used as highlight too. A mask which can be used as eyeliner too! And thats it! Love it, few products and that can be used in different ways!
colourpop eye palette is so true! i have two: double entendre (brown orange tone) & sweet talk (pink coral tone). the one she showed nude mood is very similar but less in shadows than the double entendre.
I thought primer was optional at first, but I picked up a Nyx foundation primer the other day (for super cheap, like $10?) and WOW did it transform my base makeup...I think it's because I have a lot of texture/scarring from bad acne when I was younger, it made my foundation go waaaay farther. also: I tried a rom&nd juicy tint and FELL IN LOVE. It's SOOOO comfortable to wear, and they have so many options between natural + bright colors, plus they're buildable and non-messy (I HATE getting lip gloss/stick on stuff)!
Thank you! I'm 33 yrs old and I've never used make up except for some special events, not my products, actually I have like zero products apart from sunscreen. I just wanted to give make up a try and every single video has been too intimidating! I was starting to feel hopeless and fearing go bankrupt without achieving nothing to start, haha! But this video is exactly what I needed!
This was really helpful. One thing I wanted to add and which may be helpful: For some people who already do have rather sharp facial features or who do have a warm skin tone, a bronzer instead of a contouring powder may look better. Contour did nothing for my face, but I look pretty good and healthy with a bit of bronzer.
This is the best video i've seen for beginner makeup. A lot of videos i've seen use a very heavy makeup look and to be honest i think it's ridiculous. Your makeup look is much more simplier and as someone who didn't use makeup before and hates makeup that complitly changes your appearance and makes you looks like another brick in the wall, I really love your makeup
When i was younger, my makeup always looked bad because i would apply everything heavy with little technique. So i stopped and never wore make up. Im starting with an interest in it again but now im focusing more on skincare and covering long term blemishes. So far i only wear sun screen and oil absorption powder daily, but on going out days i do concealer, lipstick as a sheer lip color and blush, and pressed powder foundation. Im looking into getting a tinted lip plumper and a brown/black eye pallet
Just in time🎉 i wanted to start in my makeup journey, Haley you think you could do a makeup tutorial with all the essentials of the video, life saver ☺️
Thank you so much Haley! Your videos are always so helpful and make applying makeup less intimidating for beginners like me. I bought some products based on your suggestions but have a hard time knowing what brushes to buy to apply them. Could you please make a follow up tutorial of what brushes to buy as a beginner (applying eyeshadow, eyeliner, contour, concealer, etc)?
Thank you for your recommendations now I can do makeup at a reasonable price and not overloading my brain with a zillion products. Now I enjoy doing makeup which I used to hate since I felt it was too complicated. Thanks Haley!
Thank you for all that makeup tips and cosmetics' recommendations! ❤ I could watch your videos for hours and never get enough 😄 And I just want to tell that you look absolutely gorgeous here - as always 💖
I thought my makeup was lacking because all I have is concealer, blush, mascara, lip tint and balm. Turns out, I have all I need. Right now, I'm investing more into my skincare, and I get complimented for my "glow." Thanks, Haley!
Thanks a lot for creating this video. Although I'm 21, almost 22, I still don't know how to wear makeup and what should I buy. Thanks to you, I finally know what's important to me and what should I buy first.
I recommend getting a dual lip and cheek product. Not only with this save space and money, using the same shade on your cheeks and lips can avoid you looking clownish
Hi, Well. Like a lot of people here, recently i been more interested in makeup however i did not know were to start and this vidéo really clered a lot of doubts about finding products more easy to start with. I been watching make up tutorial to make a list of the most important products but that did not helped me a lot, so I wanted to say : thanks for the video, this helped me a lot to give me an idea and i have been seing other videos and is very helpful.
I think an affordable primer like the one from The Ordinary is really good for beginner. One of the biggest setback when starting with makeup is to have your makeup melt or run after just a couple of hours. Primer also makes it easier to bland eyeshadows and some could also be used on its own with just spot concealing for a "no" makeup day.
Romnd's liptints are beautiful >_< and smells super nice. My fave is Juicy Lasting Tints and even with a slightly darker upper lip, it was able to match my more rosy bottom lip. Very hydrating and not sticky.
This is perfect! I urgently need some concealer for my birthday party since I'm doing my own makeup but I'm not to familiar with concealers. Thanks so much for this!
thank you so much for this honest and detailed video! i've been wanting to get into makeup, but always feel too scared to jump in on it as i worry about the cost, and what i'm going to do with the expensive products if i am unable to do my makeup well (especially eyeliner T^T) . i feel like i learnt a lot from your video (i took alot of note HAHA)!
I have been waiting for a video like this! Its so hard to find good products in my country (because its either expensive or they don't sell them at all)
Hayley my life-saver again! Feeling the need to buy certain products lately and thankfully I came across this video first to set my priorities straight.
I don't have any idea about makeups since i only wear it during occassion but I want to try for the sake of my uni. I am a beginner and don't know what to buy any makeup products that can fit to my natural look and sensitive skin. Thanks for this affordable recommendation!!
the tinted moisturiser one is the best i have been doing makeup for so long and recently learnt about the tinted moisturiser i used the faces canada one its affordable and gives a pearl finish on ur skin and coverage is also good

Wow I'm planning to ask this and here it is 😊😊😊
U r sooooo cute 🥰🥰
Hi, just a little heads up. The eyeshadow palette disappeared from the list when you add eyeliner

I'm so glade I found your channel in 2024. I am just over 40 years and now thinking of wearing makeup the proper way. You explain it very well.
Make up and me are definitely not besties yet, but your video is really encouraging! Love every second of it. Thank you for all the tips
Optional:
Primer
Foundation (buy light coverage, natural finish if necessary)
Colour corrector
Good to invest in:
Concealer
Tinted moisturizer
Essential:
Powder
Eyeshadow palette
Eyeliner
Lipgloss
I've been watching your videos for a few years now and I always love listening to your calm voice and learning new things about makeup. Thank you Haley!
Thank you so much it really helped me since i am looking to buy makeup products to start learning but there were too many things but now with your help ill buy the essential ones first and rest other later..
I’m a boy thinking of getting into makeup - I’ve been getting overwhelmed, but this video helps a lot thank you!
Thank you soo much for making this video as a teenager I was having hard time finding videos but your videos helped me a lot ✨
For me after years of no using makeup. Im starting to use again and what Im getting is:
Bb cream(sunscreen and improve skin texture)
Lipsticks, more than one because I love them, but nothing crazy. I also use it as blush.
Individual eyeshadow, two is enough, one shiny and warm, natural tone which can be used as highlight too.
A mask which can be used as eyeliner too!
And thats it!
Love it, few products and that can be used in different ways!
thank you for simplifying this, ive seen many makeup for beginners guide and honestly they had complicated tips, this was the most clear
Thank you soooo much!! I've been searching around for makeup must haves for beginners and this came just at the right time!
Hayley holding my hand my guiding me through the journey of makeup since 3yrs
colourpop eye palette is so true! i have two: double entendre (brown orange tone) & sweet talk (pink coral tone). the one she showed nude mood is very similar but less in shadows than the double entendre.
Hey, thank you for this video! ❤ Can you make a video on hair? What products you use from washing to styling? Your hair looks beautiful
This was encouraging and just what I needed. I love your content and style. Thank you for all that you do. Your channel is the best!
As 30 yr who had never had interest in make up, this is the right channel
This is exactly what I want but couldn’t find from the previous makeup videos I’ve watched ❤I love this content from you

Your makeup look is much more simplier and as someone who didn't use makeup before and hates makeup that complitly changes your appearance and makes you looks like another brick in the wall, I really love your makeup
ooohh i needed this! i only know how to cover my eyebags but have been wanting to start doing more so this is perfect!
Perfect timing!! Hope this video was helpful 🥺
Hello Haley . I started learning and doing makeup after following your videos. love from Bangladesh . Thank you.
I'm so glad that my video is helping you with your makeup! 🥰
Thank you for all that makeup tips and cosmetics' recommendations! ❤
I could watch your videos for hours and never get enough 😄
And I just want to tell that you look absolutely gorgeous here - as always 💖
Aww thank you for all kind words! It means a lot 💓
Im 23 and Im a minimalist, this is truely how I want to keep my makeup kit >
me, a 24 year old man diligently taking notes, because my girlfriend thinks I look pretty in makeup:
that's wholesome
That’s amazing.
What a king 🙏
Your gf gonna be head over heels for you haha
thats so cute 🥺
I usually mix my full coverage foundation with moisturizer. still the best tinted moisturizer of all
Thank you for teaching it my parents didnot allow me to learn in make up studio so this is huge for me.
her videos are sooo therapeutic 🤍🤍😌
I always mix my foundation with an equal amount of moisturiser before I put it on gives a lighter finish
Haley I need this makeup look you're wearing!!! Please do a tutorial. It's cute and clean♥
I thought my makeup was lacking because all I have is concealer, blush, mascara, lip tint and balm. Turns out, I have all I need. Right now, I'm investing more into my skincare, and I get complimented for my "glow." Thanks, Haley!
You’re my all time favorite UA-camrs ❤.This video is very helpful.Thank you for sharing 💖.
You are so welcome! Thank you 💖
Thanks a lot for creating this video.
I love your channel. School starts tomorrow for me and I've only started using makeup this summer so your tips are so helpful.
Your makeup for this video is gorg! I need your tutorial on this!
I agree with you. I use bb cream. For me is enough with the concealer. All your recommendations are on spot. Thanks ❤
I want to change my makeup routine for a more natural look and this video helped put some things ingo prespective, thanks alot!!
Romnd's liptints are beautiful >_< and smells super nice. My fave is Juicy Lasting Tints and even with a slightly darker upper lip, it was able to match my more rosy bottom lip. Very hydrating and not sticky.
I was losing my mind trying to figure out where to begin lol. Thank you for this!
haha I feel you! Hope the video was helpful 🤍
Its so hard to find good products in my country (because its either expensive or they don't sell them at all)
NYX eyebrow pencil is fantastic, it's affordable and has a nice range of colours like auburn which is perfect for red haired.
Thank you so much, I dont know how to do make up and I am really at a loss. Your video helped a lot, I need some beginner make up tutorial
the tinted moisturiser one is the best i have been doing makeup for so long and recently learnt about the tinted moisturiser
i used the faces canada one its affordable and gives a pearl finish on ur skin and coverage is also good
your NYX color corrector has been such a game changer for me.
I actually think her beginner makeup looks really good
