- Audi Q7 Turbo Diesel: Death Valley to Utah on one tank of Diesel fuel. MotoMan attempts to drive the Audi Q7 Turbo Diesel (TDi) from the hottest place on record in the US, Death Valley, California, to the coldest place on record in the lower 48, Peter's Sinks, Utah - over 640 miles on one tank of Diesel fuel - even though the Audi's range is only 600 . . .

This is one of the best Diesel SUV's you can get today.. awesome ride!
I'm not big on SUVs but ever since I sat in a Q7 5 years ago I've been in love with it. It's just magnificent, the build quality and comfort are so far beyond Mercedes or BMW. I've been in the front and back of the first Bangle-generation 760Li and it had nothing on the Q7. To this day the only interior that impressed me as much is the Range Rover.
I agree that the mileage doesn't seem that great - until you're in a situation like me. Father of four, if I want to take a long road trip, a Touareg or a Cayenne won't haul all six of us (especially not with luggage). A Q7 TDI would haul us all, and do all the off-roading I'd want to do with my family (I'll use my truck for serious off-roading). Ever done Wyoming in the winter? A Q7 makes pretty good sense.
B Miller totally agree. 2016 Mercedes GL350 Bluetec(blue technology: aka clean diesel) is the perfect for my family too for reasons as you said. Family of 4, two dogs and a love of road trips. Perfect for hauling everyone and the luggage.
I have an LX570 and though damn nice, it needs a refill (super unleaded) every 220 miles or so.
Buy a small $500 trailer for luggage and atv
The best looking Q7 to date
We in Europe love diesel engines. Over 60% of cars in Europe are diesels and we do 45-70mpg
+Phen0mable And yet this new model did 27 MPG......no where near close to the official figure...
xi yuan Zhang USA gallon is diffrent to UK gallon. 27mpg USA is good for this engine
Not anymore
Thanks for the kind words - we would greatly appreciate you spreading the word!
I have a 2011 q7 TDI when I got it it came w/68,504 I got it in 2019. Best car i have ever had i can't believe the previous owner didn't drive it much. 1 persons loss next person gain.
I found kind of the same deal. Brought my 2012 Q7 TDI S-Line with 75k in 2019. The owner did not drive the SUV at all.
Still have it? How did you like it, whether you still have it or not?
@@Haven2014 Still have it? How did you like it, whether you still have it or not?
@@whatta7793 Still have it. Still runs great. Great mpg for an big SUV. Avg about 24-26 in the city and 28-30 on the Hwy. Handles more like a sports car than an SUV. He's correct with Full tank you will get 600-625-mile range. The TDI Q7 model are so underappreciated and undervalued. It's really is a special SUV model. The only problems I have had with it, I had to replace the passage side windshield wipe arm. And I also had to replace the AC air-blown motor under glove box. But all these you can do yourself.
@@Haven2014 sweet. I've been looking into them and the A6, which seems like the sedan version of them, but with a family of 5 and little cheaper insurance rates, the Q7 might be winning me over.
How many miles have you put on it so far? Which seems like they've all been problem free miles as well, if you've just had those two minor "repairs". Also, thanks for the information!
What a beautiful machine. Audi is the best!
AUDI is 💩 bmw is👑
The Q7 is just BEAUTIFUL!
I wish we got the 4.2 V8 TDI in the US. I'd get it in a Q7 in a heart beat!
Wow this is the first quality car show since top gear! Nice job!
i have one of these 4wds and they are simply amazing!! quality second to none and a range that just astounds!!
Good review,I enjoyed watching it. I'm from England UK and an Audi Q7 is a fantastic very large, but expensive car. I have a small VAG SUV (Skoda Yeti) which as a 140bhp 2.0 litre TDi. It's a little smaller than a RAV 4, and even with 2 adults, 3 kids and 2 large dogs in the boot, still returns over 50mpg, and I do not drive Miss Daisy! If I am caught in traffic that can't get past say 55mph the average consumption goes up to 60 mpg.
Hi there, just a comment in case you're not aware of this: USA MPGs and UK MPGs are not interchangeable. 1 US gallon equals 3.8 liters, whereas 1 UK (imperial) gallon equals 4.5 liters. Not only this, but the official tests (and routes) used to measure MPGs are different in both countries. That's why MPGs are always a bit higher in the UK, even when comparing the exact same car.
Fuel prices fluctuate with oil futures and refinery capacity. This film was shot over two years ago. At the time, Diesel fuel per gallon was indeed cheaper than premium octane unleaded and in some areas competitive with or cheaper than regular unleaded.
in case you missed it - 600miles on ONE TANK ...
and just a question - if the tank was already filled to the top at the beginning of the journey, how did he fit the additional diesel into an already filled to the top tank??
There is always a small volume that should be left empty so that the fuel can expand into it.
You can force more fuel in to fill it completely but it is not a good practice.
Especially in newer cars where they cannot vent it into the atmosphere so they have an evap chamber with charcoal ...
that can capture the vapors but if you soak it it destroys it.
@@andraslibal diesels don't have an evap system, because they don't need one.
Didn't he just carry a jerrycan of diesel? That's what normal people do for long journeys.
Yes, it is the 3.0 V6 TDi - The US does not receive the larger engine.
that is crazy!!! Love Audi Q7 TDI, TERRIFIC!!!!
EXTREMELY good point - apologies for not even thinking to point that out in the film . . .
I own a q7 in the uk, I get roughly 34 mpg on the motorway and 26 around town..
My previous lexus rx450h never once returned the 44mpg as stated by the company.. In fact it was more like 30 mpg highway if lucky and 20 around town.
American MPG is ofc different due to you lot not being able to measure properly but facst are the 2.5 tonne truck does GREAT mpg and sound great too
WOW - that is AMAZING MPG . . . even with the EU/US conversion - you kicked my arse with the same vehicle. Respect.
MotoManTV thanks :), Must admit though My figs are a bit better when I drive Lexus style, even with my UK limit of 70 miles per hour I can push 37 on the 8 speed box.
One thing you should've mentioned, turbo lag is simply insane but when it gets going, it really can shift. I am still unsure why your mpg even with conversion is bad, cruise control wins ever time...
And comment about suspension hiss? It is fully air controlled, as you set it at uto in the vehicle, it hunkers down in motorways to save mpg...
I have owned and used all the large SUV that the Uk sells, I am going out on a limg and will say for cost per mile? Audi is a clear winner.
Costs of land/range rover with low mpg and tax = heart aches every month.
Lexus? As good as ANY car ever made for day to day, mark levison stereo has to be the best ever made.
BMW? eeek the make more than ford.
Maybe that would be a great side by side, cost of ownership when your paying > 60k sterling is about the best you can get, it is a big factor now either side of the pond?
BRILLIANT review though
Amazing!!!! Best video I have ever seen about the Audi Q7
I have nostalgia for this era. 🥲
It was the Audi 3.0 V6 TDi . . .
Thanks!
I've had Q7 TDI for almost 5 years and it's THE BEST 7 SEATER money can buy.
what kind of mpg's do you see?
@@kdreed96
23-28mpg on average where 23 is mostly city and 28 mostly freeway.
I used to drive to work about 42 miles and that was a hwy with 55mph speed limit. I would get 30-32mpg driving 55-60mph.
Bang & Olufsen speaker system is an option on the Q7 3.0 TDi as well as the heated seats, sunroof and three spoke steering wheel
The fuel capacity is 21 gallons. The key to these car's range is the 27 MPG I was able to produce on trip. Doesn't sound like a lot for a Hyundai Elantra but for a 5000 + 7 passenger luxury SUV . . .
Try 26.5 gallons!!
Germany diesel audi q7 💪💪💯💯
Mind that Q7 V12 doesn´t have S-line bodykit as an option, it has its own recognizable front bumper.
Love this audi. I GOT O8 Q7 NOW LOOKING FOR ONE LIKE THIS. WITH FACELIFT.
At the time this was filmed - over three years ago - diesel was indeed cheaper than unleaded . . .
You're right. Wish they made a hybrid diesel !
Marissa Giannotta Range Rover has!
It's not cheaper in The California Republic either . . . the point is that you go farther on one tank.
This dude should have a tv show...if he does what channel?
he is a runner up for top gear... i dig it.
I bought a 2013 Q7 TDI in December at Hilton Head Audi in SC
Mean Gene and I just did a debate on the merits of Diesel v Hybrid. Short but sweet - coming up shortly.
those little speakers... look so badass...
Nice video. I have the V8 Diesel of the same vehicle perfect car.
Audi makes such good-looking products, wow!
this show is great!!! it will either go ballistic and be as known as fld or sink...
Stupid question, but with petrol you have different quality's such as 93ron, 95ron, 98ron and so on. Does diesel have the same working?
If you run it on Bio-diesel its even cheaper still and smells like french fries. Thanks.
Where did he get diesel being cheaper? Everywhere here in ohio it's generally almost a dollar more per gallon for diesel! Example: today, unleaded=3.30, diesel=4.17!! I will say though I have always been skeptical of VW, but my mom just got a TDI Q7 and I love it, perfect balance of everything! Even handles like her X3 that felt like it had no damping whatsoever.
Will do even better deleted. I cannot wait to buy one.
10.2/6.9/8.1 l/100km urban/extra-urban/combined are the BMW x5 numbers, converted into US mpg that gives you:
23/34/29
Official numbers from Audi:
12.9/8.1/9.8 mpg -> 18/29/24
Boy, the diesel/unleaded prices sure reversed since this was taped.
Bruno TaTa You ain't kidding! Here in California - Unleaded is still north of US$3.50 and diesel is now US$2.80 and lower . . .
@Bruno Tata: it sure has!!! I drive a BMW 335d and I’m so glad I drive diesel!!!
What I don’t get is, if you’re a pickup driver, why would you ever drive a gasoline truck?!!!!
That’s the dumbest thing ever!
Truck, SUV, or car: diesel is the way to go!
I’ve got 225,000 MILES on my daily driver and keeps going strong!
Thanks Rudy!!!
In the US, Diesel is only offered in one grade.
Obviously this was done before the big EPA fiasco. Was a great vehicle, after the "fix" not so much.
Well, I get that...but this was filmed here in the U.S. (MotoMan answered my original question.) With any luck, in the next few months I will own a 2014 3.0 CRD Jeep Grand Cherokee. It will be my first diesel.
Well maybe I missed it but what size engine is in this
Great show, loved it! Next...Cayenne (Porsche) Diesel, 720 mpg!
yes it does, saw one a few weeks ago
Love Your Janis Joplin outro ..
Yes but not exclusively.
Wow! I just bumped into this video, and I've got to say that I loved it! Your channel as well!! I can't believe I didn't know you/your videos!! Subbed!
what a show, nice presenting
You said "thunk"... It's "thought!"! Tflcar and you both say it
Man I miss those days...
In Costa Rica we use diesel cars and are pretty good.. Q5 TDI X5 TDI Range Rovers TDI Mercedes Benz CDI Toyota, nissan, mitsubishi has nice diesel cars too..
Best SUV!
You're welcome! And I most definitely will!
Singapore..... i ma enjoying my Audi Q7 TDi 2012 probably the first one ?
i enjoy it the only thing is that even though it's clean diesel we need to pay high tax for it as it's diesel!
glad to have one ;)
Gutes Video, geiles Auto, schöne Farbe, super Motor ! Grüsse aus Zürich
The only reason that Diesel fuel isn't cheaper then gasoline is because of tax policy. The government has figured out that truck drivers will continue to buy diesel no matter what the price, so they keep increasing the taxes until the transportation and business lobbyists start to scream. On the other hand they've also noticed that increasing the gas prices via taxes makes voters unhappy, so they don't do that as often. Incidentally, this is also the same reason why the gas prices in MA are more expensive then in NH -- because of taxes. In the US about 1/3 (+/- depending on the state) of the price of fuel is taxes. In Europe the axes (and fuel prices) are much higher. If it wasn't for European taxes, the Europeans would be paying the same prices as everyone else.
Well diesel does cost a little more to produce. In Europe diesel is taxed lower so it works out to be the same or incredibly close to petrol in price, incentivising people to buy more economical diesel cars.
How are these long term?
Is it worth to buy a used one with over 75k miles?
Yes I bought mines at 112k runs amazing!!
Great suv...great video...
@94navin 26.4 US Gallons.
This guy reminds me of Kenny Power's sidekick. :D
Whats the fuel capacity on this car? Wouldnt it get more mileage because it has a bigger tank? If you scale it down, would it still be impressive?
SixXliebtTechno No, diesel is not new in the US. However, because of crazy emissions regulations in some states like California, until now it was practically impossible to own a diesel passenger car. And now that diesel cars have overcome those requirements, there is one more - in most places diesel is considerably more expensive than gasoline, so the benefit is questionable, particularly when you consider the up front cost of diesel car is higher than gasoline-powered car (often significantly higher).
My 2013 VW Passat TDI SEL premium was just under 600.00 less then the same car in a gas version. Unlike Jeep who will remove your HEMI and give you diesel for 4500.00 more. Go figure.
You don't mention whether this is a V8 or V6 TDi?
Would be very interested to know if it is the V8 but I'm guessing V6 with the millage
Thanks delmonte, I never knew this.
He changed the fuel composition?
When you merged over to the right (7:!6), you didn't signal. Why not? I wanted to see the (switching lanes) light signals go off.
I'll take a tahoe thanks. nice vid.
great looking truck but small inside and the sill panels dont look like they fit very well
i love this car
Jack left a stench in that car!
And it has been bouncing between cheaper and little more expensive here in Oregon.
Awesome. Love the car!
Loved the video. But what planet do you live on where diesel is less expensive than gasoline?
@gman586 I think this thing looks awesome but what's the half that alternative?
One interesting thing about this vid is he could have started at an elevation below sea level and made it to 8,000 feet to get that economy.
RIP to cheaper diesel prices.
Diesel in the most expensive fuel in a LOT of places in the U.S.. for many it just doesn't make sense to buy a diesel unless there's a specific reason for getting it such as heavy towing or needing a lot of torque, or where diesel is more plentiful than common petrol, but for most, it just isn't worth the direct cost. The Porsche is more fuel efficient I think- they should couple the diesel with an electric motor.
likea whispr most people buy diesel for fuel economy or range, or as you said, towing
I enjoyed this video, but there was no mention whatsoever as to the engine of this Q7 TDI. I'm guessing it couldn't be the almighty V12, so was it the V6 or the V8?
That’s in part due to the 100 litres plus fuel tank
I need one for my long trips
I like the review! I'm subscribing!
am so getting this car!!!
how many gallon does the tank hold
everyone knows that. you should just take into account more accuracy when making broad statements about pricing. we can all see that the entire point of the video is to illustrate the huge benefit of diesel as far as mpg is concerned
What kind of cars do u have??
my full size diesel Car does 71.5 MPG and can still reach 120 MPH which is Adequate and enough to get you arrested most new V8's are limited to 113 MPH anyway , my Tank range is around 970 Miles
Not really . . . think of it as a resurgence . . .
I priced out one of these online with a loaded Q7. 62k. Now, stack it up to a Grand Cherokee eco diesel and why would anyone buy the Jeep. I own 2 kids already. 2 if enough. I also drive a VW Passat TDi (2013). Love it. But for the Q7, it's on the list when its time to replace the minivan (when all the kids are out of school and on their own. (in the next 2 years). However, I have to comment on the cost of diesel in Michigan. It's not cheaper then supper unl. In face, it's anywhere from 50 to 80cents more per gal then reg unl. But, I can get 800miles out of TDi or 50's hwy, mid 40's city. It's no viper off the starting line but when that turbo catches up, it will hit 100 fast and cruse like it's doing 50. Love the auto adjust for conditions.
Diesel is cheaper in Europe. Always been, always will be.
Its a superior fuel type.
Earth, Sector Europe.
I would buy it because it offers Diesel same with MB but Range Rover does not offer Diesel in USA which pisses me off and Jeep Wrangler should be coming with a dam Diesel too because it needs that MPG and torque.
