  • Muttiah Muralitharan is a Sri Lankan cricket coach, former cricketer and is regarded as one of the most successful and greatest bowlers in the history of the sport. He is the only bowler to take 800 wickets in test cricket and 530 One Day International (ODI) wickets and continues to hold a record of maximum wickets altogether in international cricket. Muralitharan, who is also known as Murali among friends and colleagues, is the first wrist-spinning off-spinner in the history of the game and his bowling action has landed him in controversy on numerous occasions throughout his career spanning over decades. Murali has been called out for his bowling action on three different occasions and was also cleared by the ICC after subsequent tests. He also had to face criticism from cricketers as well as noted personalities for his bowling action. In this edition of ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Murali talks about his two-decade cricket career, his love for the game and the controversies and criticism which came along the way. Murali also talks about his relations with cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, who released the trailer of a biopic which is made on his life. He also says that he is a proud Tamilian and answers controversy around his political connections with former Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa and his party. He also terms the IPL as a platform to filter talent, which is going to prove a boon for Indian cricket.

As an Indian cricket fan, Muttiah has given us lot to cry about in 90s when he singlehandedly defeated entire team. But the man is G.O.A.T, no one can deny that. He is a great bowler and great human being.

Such an humble person who calmy answers good questions and bad questions. Truly an ultimate legend of cricket history. But saying that he is known for controversy is an absolute insult to him. Anyhow you tease him daily by his controversies he will not react. He is one of the few calmest cricketers ever in the world. We Indians are very lucky that he got his 800th wicket against us. Sense of racial superiority, that's the reason. Everything in england and australia is great. Lords is the home of cricket, mcg is the greatest ground in the world, bradman is the goat blah blah. A lot of very average cricketers of theirs are projected as "great". This is a pattern if you notice.

@@nayamsharjeelrafique369 because Murali was the first spinner in the world for whom ICC relaxed the norm of breaking elbow for bowling doosra first by 5° & then by 15° . Shane Warne had a clean action or release of delivery.
So many off spinners were caught nowadays who are known for breaking elbow rule of 15° .

Smita Prakash might consider approaching the initial question with a bit more empathy, especially when addressing a legendary spin bowler in cricket who boasts an impressive record of 800 wickets in Test Matches and 534 wickets in One Day Internationals. This record remains unmatched to this day and may well remain unbroken for the foreseeable future. It's highly unlikely that Murali expected such a question to be his first, and this disappointment is quite evident, coming from a senior journalist. To add, these two records are just a small part of the incredible legacy Murali has built in the world of cricket. 2:44

But none around World Cup win, 800th wicket, almost breaking Laker's record, England 1998. Such a negative interview was only saved by the charm and grace of dear Murali.

This was an excellent interview and got to know so much about Muthaiah Muralidharan, the greatest bowler of world cricket. Thank you.
One small observation. You started the interview on a negative note starting with the controversy with his bowling action and chucking controversy. He’s the highest wicket taker in the world. I expected you would welcome him with great awe about his record and achievements. You certainly should’ve asked about the controversy but not as the first question!

How someone could achieve so much facing criticism and scrutiny in every step of life?
In career i.e. cricket as well as being socially squeezed between waring groups during civil war which covered much of his growing growing up and professional years in Sri Lanka.✊🏻
He is so proud and grateful to his captain and team and his countrymen who believed in his match winning abilities. 👌
A role model to future generations. 🫂✌🏻
