    That is a gorgeous shawl. I have alpacas and have considered angora rabbits. Still not sure.

      @@TailSpinFarm I have a difficult time pulling the fiber. I supposed I should use carders.

    wow that shawl is to die for! i loved the project show and tell
    question about the spinolution wheels. whats the difference between them and is there one that's best for angora?

    • @TailSpinFarm
      @TailSpinFarm  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! I love it too and am thankful to have it. You can check out the website www.spinolution.com to see the differences. They are all ergonomic and have many options and accessories with many price points. I have the Spinolution Monarch, which is a production wheel. I love spinning Angora on it, but can spin anything from fine to bulky weight yarns on it. I love it! I have 2 more wheels coming, so stay tuned for some demonstration videos!

    What size crochet hook do you use for alpaca dance yarn

    • @TailSpinFarm
      @TailSpinFarm  11 місяців тому

      It depends on the yarn and the pattern that you are using. Thanks for watching!

    Just got both size Addi Machines and wondering if you have any tips for using handspun yarn especially angora blends.

    • @TailSpinFarm
      @TailSpinFarm  Рік тому

      I love my machine. I sold my small one at one point, because I wasn't using it as much. I have considered getting another one. I don't notice much of a difference unless I'm using things that are more "art yarn" then I have to pay attention to make sure all the stitches catch. I have an older video showing my Addi machine at work. Enjoy!!

    I saw a vid where the person had spun wool from a poodle and then 2 ply it with Angora. Is dog wool a thing? I didn't think so.

      Dog fur is a thing! I have a shawl made from Angora, Alpaca, Pygora (all from our farm) and fur from my border collie Willow! I'm not sure which video it is in, but I do talk about it. It turned out beautiful!

      All this time I could've been putting it to use? WE could make some real specialty stuff with dad's pack of rescue greyhounds, but then again, their fur is too short.

    "Soft' is not a very good descriptive term because it is so subjective. The better description is "fine". Fine fibers are anything under 21 microns. The micron count is more objective and will provide you with a much better indicator of how it ranks objectively with other fibers. Angora is the warmest fiber on the planet and Satin Angora is the finest domesticated fiber. Wild Vicuna comes it at 4 microns but Satin angora is about 8 microns. Qiviut is indeed soft but not the finest as it averages about 10 - 12 microns. So Satin angora is finer (and consequently softer than qiviut.) English angora is also quite fine . Other types of angora like French and German come in averaging about 14 - 15 microns so considerably finer than cashmere . The standard for good cashmere is 18 microns or less. Angora shares with wool and other natural fibers the same benefits such as breathability, antibacterial odor and fire retardant, ability to regulate temperature and wick moisture. Angora though has the best moisture wicking properties of all natural fibers . While all natural fibers including wool are warm some are even warmer than wool . Angora is 8x warmer than wool . (Alpaca as in your hat is 6x warmer) It also has the most incredible thermal properties that no other fiber has . Thermal means that the fiber is hollow. While qiviut is very warm, it is not hollow so not considered to be thermal . Like other fibers including qiviut, angora has insulating properties that traps air between the fibers as in the bloom. But this thermal capacity means that angora also adds warmth making it wonderful for outerwear products in cold climates, but also for products like wrist and knee/back warmers, to increase circulation very quickly and thereby reduce inflammation and alleviate pain . So it is wonderful for arthritis and carpel tunnel, whiplash and back injuries etc because of these thermal properties. . However while angora does not have memory neither does alpaca so both are not great for knitted things like sweaters because they will tend to stretch,. Knitting works for using 100% angora for small things like hats and mitts -- but the type will also matter as well as spinning it somewhat thicker than fingering weight for hats or using a smaller guage for knitting if it is spun quite fine. So French is best for outerwear projects. French has more guard hair and the heavier bloom rather than a light halo will provide more structure. So as you indicated with the shaping or adding another ply of wool , there are ways to mitigate the difficulties with the angora especially the finer angora like English, German and especially Satin. When making the tube style hat one thing I found so it isn't so flimsy , is to spin it not so fine and if making it on the csm use larger hook needles and tighter tension. Crochet acts like weaving and will be just fine made up at 100%. Also rather than blending, a 1 ply angora with 1 ply of wool is a better option than blending it because by blending you will just get softer wool and lose the integrity of the angora. I am also a huge fan of angora. It is my passion and have raised them for more than 40 years. It is the most wonderful of all natural fibers. After a whiplash injury I even sleep with a 100% angora hat and this has helped to prevent migraines from the whiplash injury . Your products are beautiful . I do love that shawl. Thanks for sharing . I love to see what others are making with 100% angora.

      Thank you for all the information! This was meant to be a basic video and words are sometimes hard in the middle of filming :) In tomorrow's video I talk about goals for 2024 and how I am hoping to deep dive into more of the "scientific" side of things like genetics and such. This would be a perfect addition for a video. I'm certainly no expert in any of this. I have a huge passion for creating, spinning, yarn and the bunnies but definitely have more to learn. 40 years! That's twice as long as I've been doing this. Maybe we can do a video together sometime if you are interested? Let me know. Thank you!
