Tip. Wire brush and spray top of diff covers before cracking open . Prevent dirt debris from falling right on sticky oil covered gears. Ask me how I know . Also front diff access made easier by gentle lift on front with jack stands in place but tires still touching ground. Use Harbor freight fluid transfer pump for anything more than 1-2 qts or else you will be pumping for days.

Thanks for the video. My truck is exactly like yours. By the way, I have the official Ram Truck Service Manual which I paid $120 for when I bought the truck (I'm still upset about that). ;- )
Our trucks with the "Limited Slip Differential" or as GM would call it "Positraction" Dodge calls it " Trac-lock." Here are the instructions word-for-word from page 3-132 and page 3-153 starting with putting the cover back on.
    6) Apply a bead of Mopar Silicone Rubber Sealant, or equivalent, to the housing cover.
    7) Install the cover and any identification tag. Tighten the cover bolts to 41 N-m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
    8) For Trac-lok differentials, a quantity of Mopar Trac-lok lubricant (friction modifier), or equivalent, must be added after repair service or a lubricant change. Refer to the Lubricant Specifications section of this group for the quantity necessary.
(My note: There is NO quantity listed of the Mopar Trac-lok lube listed. Probably just the 1 small bottle).
    9) Fill differential with Mopar Hypoid Gear Lubricant, or equivalent, to bottom of the fill plug hole. Refer to the Lubricant Specifications section of this group for the quantity necessary.
    Page 3-153
    Lubricant.......Thermally Stable SAE 80W-90
    Lube Capacity
    4x2...... 3.22 L (6.81 pints)
    4x4...... 4.80 L (10.125 pints)
    Axle Ratio...... 3.54, 4.10
    Torque
    Plug, Fill Hole ...... 34 N.m (25 ft. lbs.)
    Bolts, Cover ...... 41 N.m (30 ft. lbs.)
    RWAL/ABS Sensor Bolt ...... 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.)
Note one of the nice things about this Service Manual is that it has a nice set of graphics showing wear patterns on Pinion and Ring Gear teeth.
    Hope this helps somebody.

Great vid! You can also fill it up as much as you can, to don't run it w/o dif oil, level it, then fill up to the top mark which in this case is bottom of oil plug.

I like to use a carbide scraper to clean the gasket faces. It peels off the RTV without a lot of drama. I just stuff rags around the internals before I begin scraping so that I don't have to clean up as much.

    Good video,
The only concern would be that all these differentials are specific in types of oil and friction modifiers. Some yes, and some no depending on model year and axle spec. Not all the same.

Thanks for the video! I have basically the same differential on my '97 Dodge 2500. One concern I have about that gasket---it says tighten to 35 ft lbs. But the Dana 70 spec says 30 ft lbs. I would hate to break a bolt overtightening it

My cover looks a little different (Doesn't have bent flanges, just flat at the edges.). I'm having trouble getting it to break the seal. It is glued on. I don't want to bend the flange. Been using a small screw driver on the bottom edge. A friend said to pry in the flat area half way up instead of at the bottom. Not sure how hard I should tap the screw driver. Any suggestions...

really liked the video just out of curiosity do u have one on u-joints? i came across your video because someone said my sound in my 98 ram 3500 8.0l v10 was either a ujoint or diff fluid, the sound is similar to as if a rock was rolling around in my rear wheel between 8-15 mph

Many of the synthetics, 75-90 or 75-140 say they contain the required limited slip fluid. Russell, what did you use to refill a pump or just squeeze the bottles in? Think I'm going to use the gasket too, thanks, Dave.

Thanks for the video. Im going to service my husbands differential. Ive never worked on my husbands truck the way I do now. I just did all the brakes and noticed the rear hub seal is leaking. So ill service it after I replace it. Any extra advice doing the whole thing? I figured since I was doing one side I should do both just to get them out of the way. The seals are about 10 each how much was the kit you got and where did u get the kit?

From website: 2500/3500 Model axles DO NOT REQUIRE any limited slip oil additive (friction modifiers).
1500 Model rear axles equipped with a Limited Slip Differential require that 5 oz. (148 ml) MOPAR Limited Slip Additive be added to the gear lubricant. Refer to “Fluids, Lubricants, And Genuine Parts” in “Maintaining Your Vehicle” for further in

Page 399 of my owners manual to my 2005 Ram 2500 5.9L diesel says DO NOT ADD LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVES in all caps. I cannot seem to get a straight answer here on what is supposed to go in there. Do you know? Is the locking rear axle the same thing as a limited slip rear?

    • @9thGenAccord
      @9thGenAccord 9 років тому

+Subaruguy8508 Look on the rear of your diff. Is there a tag that says it needs limited slip fluid. No a limited slip and locker are not necessarily the same thing, but many times people get them confused.

I don't give a shit as long as its the right weight oil. All the rest is a deal to get money. Dodge said it would be some crazy price for their special fluid. It does not matter. Anything beats running it dry or full of water.
