Great and informative video! As a certified TP&W foamer (who also wrote an article on the Prairie Marksman), there's some additional fixes I wanted to throw in. I'm sure you found some of these, but had to cut for simplicity or time, but here's this. - The first train on August 10, 1980 saw nearly 2,000 visitors to the station. How many were on the first run, I'm unsure. The first week, the train saw around 60 passengers, below the 75 per train they had wanted. Sometimes it grew to 85 per train, but not long. - The train also had an issue on where it was. A decade earlier, a river barge hit the TP&W's bridge over the Illinois River, so routing the train over the Peoria & Pekin Union bridge would be about an extra 30 minutes. Both a taxi or bus service would've had high prices too. - Not only that, but the station was in a bad spot, and lacked essential facilities. - Hostility between a Peoria Journal Star editor and the train.
Another rather short (but not as short lived) operation was the "Arrowhead" train from April 15, 1975 to April 30th, 1978. Taking over from the former Burlington Northern inherited Badger and Gopher trains, Amtrak operated the service between Duluth and Minneapolis, operating in tandem with the North Coast Hiawatha (and then later the revived Empire Builder). The train would be rebranded into the "North Star" which served beyond into the mid-80s, before being axed in 1985. One oddity of service was the usage of foreign locomotives on the train. On a handful of occasions, two Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range SD9s (129 and 130) were spot hired by Amtrak due to their steam heating capability. They would often run in a pair, or with an Amtrak locomotive. SDP40Fs were also being used as power when E units or the SD9s weren't being leased.
I would love to see a complete (probably hour long) list of all discountined amtrak trains (not including trains that still exist and have thier name changed) I still have so many questions about amtrak routes that don't exist anymore
I found this quite an informative video! Now, I know more about the flops in Amtrak's 40-year history, including why the _Spirit_ _of_ _California,_ _Fort_ _Pitt,_ and _Lake_ _Country_ _Limited_ failed (budget balancing, low ridership, and a planned connecting service not coming into fruition, respectively). Thanks for the video!
A great video about these short lived Amtrak Passenger Trains, especially the two that were in my home state of California. It was a shame that they lost their grand train services. At least they would be remembered. Out of the six, I would’ve like to see the Spirit of California service that used to go through my home city San Jose, California. They been running and then ending it long before I was born. Not to mention I’m now 20 years old. Also since you have been using two old footage clips of Amtrak’s Spirit of California that has the logo of the Western Railway Museum, I honestly wanna tell you that I have went to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, California. That was back in November 9th and it was my very first visit to the railroad museum.
There is one passenger train from Amtrak that lasted 5 years and 5 months in service. The name of the train was the Lone Star. It operated from Chicago to Houston on trackage owned by ATSF. Not as short lived as the ones in the video but still interesting
It's interesting how many short-lived trains Amtrak had. The Las Vegas Limited has to be my favorite, I would have an ABSOLUTE blast break dancing in that disco car.
9:40 I know this is getting into political/opinionated territory, but I don't think Amtrak is IMMEDIATELY done for As some people might think. There have been Republican representatives and senators who have fought for Amtrak funding and support. So I don't think Amtrak is going anywhere despite the upcoming Republican trifecta.
Yeah I agree but Amtrak is definitely gonna get less funding and more budget cuts by the government now that Trump is in office. Amtrak is probably gonna have a harder time expanding during Trump’s term in office as well. But Amtrak will definitely stay around cause it is a very needed transportation option for many citizens in the U.S.
@@SPRailfan4449 there is an interesting article in Trains Magazine about this and how some Amtrak officials talked to well connected people inside Trump administration in the past.
I agree mostly. As much as the GOP hates propping up Amtrak, they have too many constituents depending on the long distance routes to cut them. They probably won't add any new routes, but I don't foresee many cuts. I do expect the rolling stock situation to get even worse and on board service to decrease. Observation lounges and traditional dining might be at risk, which would hurt tourist ridership a lot.

Should Amtrak trains cross-border
they already do
Three go into Canada (used to be four, but the fourth might one day come back). One used to connect with a passenger train in Mexico until probably the 1980s.
Wish the UIUC train still existed
For those complaining about it being political at the end... You are aware who owns Amtrak, right?
9:21 I find it funny that no services go to south dakota
Sioux Falls - St. Paul might make sense, but can't think of any other trains that might be viable.
I’ve had a question forever and could never find the answer so maybe you fellers could help. What year did the F40PH’s get ditch lights on the front of the cabs? Was it a regional thing or just how they were ordered?
Nice vídeo!
Was that improvised footage for the Campus train from Trainz?
From Las Vegas, thank you for pronouncing Nevada the correct way
Hey Jared I was wondering if you can do a history on Amtrak’s Floridian in the following order
The beginnings
Discontinuation
Reasons why it was discontinued in the beginning
And Revival
And also a brief history on the Capital Limited and Silver Star
Our favorite weenie got himself a normie sponsorship. He's truly made it now :')
Spirit of CA, I never knew such a train existed. George Deukmejian? He's just as worse as when Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor. Oh yes the Janesville joke, the worst train ever. Peoria is too small of a city for Amtrak service. I love seeing commercials of the Reno fun train and Yosemite fun train.
5:00 TP&W mentioned
3:15 gobbless Lake Country Limited
Hey you should talk about mallet trains ( like the URY 51)
Only Amtrakguy could get me to buy NordVPN. Buying it now!
The next egnens of amtrak needs to be the semons SC44
You should create a rap song and have a rapper "Travis Scott" and have the song be about trains or Amtrak
Hey AmtrakGuy365, I wanted to ask if you would ever do those talking Trainz type series again? If so, I wanted to do a voiceover too.
Well! Gre- a SPONSOR?!?!
next sponsor is genshin impact im calling it inshallah
The Great Northern "Winnipeg LTD." lasted like, a day under Amtrak before they canned it, not very cash money of them tbh
How did the campus run from nov 1971 to mar 1971 7:02 lol
What happen with trainz crashes 6
1:30 sponsorship ends fyi
I’m assuming the release of the Foloridian inspired you to make this video
You’re a train guy matter fact you’re you’re a Michigan train guy and I do have a railroad that I really want you to cover and that would be the Michigan airline railway (specifically Coe Rail)
LAKE COUNTRY LIMITED
WTF is the sponsor not Amtrak?
I can’t believe I might be pinned and have more than 1 like
nice video👌
SINCE WHEN DID BRO GOT A SPONCER???? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hey amtrackguy365,could (if you can,im not juging or be mad) make a vedio about tge viewliner coaches and there history? Just asking.
Edit:GODDANM MY GRAMMER IS BAD💀💀💀
Edit 2:and i did it again🗣🔥🔥😭💀💀
Amtrak should bring back Trains to Michigan Central Detroit from Chicago
Well, considering the Michigan Central depot is owned by Ford, you'd have to ask them if they're willing to put a train station in their R&D headquarters.
@@SynchroScoreI think Ford is open to the idea, but much like Greenfield Village connection, I don't think it's viable.
Nice
