Britain's Quietest Railway Stations

- While the UK sports one of the busiest railway networks in the world, not every line and station sees a frequent number of trains serving it, and in today's video, we'll be looking at those locations which see an average of less than 200 passengers per annum.
Although I acknowledge that Berney Arms in Norfolk is the quietest station in the UK for the 2019/2020 year at 42 passengers, this video is based on average annual passenger numbers as these can fluctuate year-on-year significantly, therefore Berney Arms, for the 2015 to 2020 period, saw an average of 887 passengers per year - a bustling London terminus when compared to Denton. Also, much of the reason why Berney Arms has been so quiet this year is due to the station being closed for signalling works, and the nearby Berney Arms public house going out of business in 2015.

11:30 Friday actually. They only changed the day to Saturday a couple of years back. Used to catch the train from Reddish South a couple of times a month but always return to Reddish North which was about half a mile less convenient for my flat.
When I lived in Tameside, Manchester, my ex, who was a local, told me about the almost abandoned stations at Reddish South and Denton. Drove along the line to see them for myself. Abandoned my arse, a 66 rolled through at each station! Glad they got a mention. Would love to see a video on the nearby half intact Woodhead Line at some point. Great stuff your videos are!
I'd love to see a similar video for other nations where rail travel is commonplace. Japan etc

The Japanese National Railways to JR Group transition in 1987 can be a very interesting topic of an example of state owned monopoly to public private ownership. Similar to British Rail, by the 1980s JNR racked up insane debt due to a combination of uncompetitive fares, a management who was slow to adapt to changes in the market, too many unprofitable routes, and extreme bureaucracy that caused inefficiencies everywhere.

Where I grew up in Southern California, there was a line that ran threw my home town of Winchester. I would run up the hill in our backyard to watch it pass in the near distance. As I aged it was use less and less, till the last time I saw the line being used in 2004. It was a cargo line, for the fruit and hey from Hemet, and did take on passengers, but passenger service was ended in the late 90s. The line is still privately owned, and maintained, tho no trains run it anymore at all. It's kinda odd.

I'm always surprised that Altnabreac doesn't feature on these lists, since it is quite literally a station in the middle of nowhere (it must be a contender for Britain's most remote station). The fact it has one regular passenger (the occupant of the old station) keeps it's overall numbers up though.
It's also used by hikers and fishermen.
I remember being taken to see the last train pass through Chiseldon (on the old Midland and South Western Junction Railway, later part of GWR/Western Region) when I was a toddler in 1961. It was 7808 Cookham Manor. Sad to think how much better off we would be if all those branch lines were open with small electric sets replacing a lot of the road traffic. Damn you, Beeching.
Electric trains i have no interest in. if they started using older classics more id defo consider using the network. more electric the less interesting it is. people flock to see and old diesel or steam train, you just do not see that with classic electric well not at the scale of diesel or steam. but do agree services from these small remote stations should stay open, but not at 1 train a week, its useless at that rate and i never get a chance to gain traction once again as it just not practical, at the very least two trains a day at peak times forward and return prob get more people through the doors

Ruairidh - I don't think there's a single station in the UK that can compete with one in a remote part of Canada or Australia in terms of passenger usage. Also you've omitted 'Bernie Arms' in Norfolk.....recently declared the least used station in the UK! Not somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia.....or stations like British Steel nr. Redcar), Teeside Airport, or Denton. Apparently Bernie Arms has fewer users than any of these stations.
Can you do a 'Least used/Quietest London Underground Station'? ......I can think of a few that would make this list - Moor Park, Theydon Bois, and Roding Valley to name a few.

That's correct about Canada. Last year when I went from Toronto to Vancouver, we stopped at a milepost in the middle of no-where for someone to get off. The stewardess told me that in the State of Ontario you can phone ViaRail and ask to be put off the train at any milepost, and be picked up there again. People do that to go fishing or hiking in remote places not accessible by road, especially in summer when the ice melts .
@@CJSHM I know there are some that have no road access and are made redundant by another station a few miles down the line by one serving an actual town and as if the remoteness wasn't enough they only get served by 6 trains per week
I think I used Teesside Airport station once, when I was living in Durham and was flying to Amsterdam. I remember it was a fair walk from the station to the terminal on a rainy day.

12:01 Shippea Hill probably missed the list by being at the bottom of the list one year, making it an attraction for railfans the next. The "Break Shippea Hill" episode of All the Stations didn't (or did, depending on how you want to look at it) help its five year average as well.
Clifton Station, formerly known as Clifton Junction Station is also really quiet!
The one train a week is part of the mid Victorian scheme to operate a very limited service know colloquially as the Parly. This effectively acts as a double -edged sword. It limits the use of the said station to an absurd nonentity but at the same time prevents the station from being closed down.

I use the Tees Valley line frequently. Teesside Airport station was busier, used two or three people per daytime train, but not for access to the airport. There was a squash club in a nearby hanger-like building and all the people alighting carried rackets! That stopped when the squash club closed, which must be about twenty years ago.
There is a story that airmen for Middleton St George used to pull the communication cord to alight near the airfield, and LNER used to stop the trains unofficially to prevent that, before the station was built.
Where's the logic in having only one service a day at some stations? How are passengers meant to get back again - walk along the lines?
It's literally just so they don't have to go to the bother of formally closing the station. In the case of Teesside Airport, Network Rail found the footbridge too costly to maintain, ao closed it. Therefore trains could only serve the Westbound platform.
How about my village?
One BUS per WEEK.

It brings a whole new meaning to just popping into town to do the weekly shop.
Here you have to have somewhere to stay for night after night and you can bet that the milk will have gone off by the time you get home again.

One reason behind the demise of the Teesside Airport station was the cessation of the bus service between the terminal and the station. This bus now only runs between Darlington and the Airport itself.
Hadn't realised teesside airport had been mothballed, like IBM and Redcar British Steel.
At least I did teesside airport last april, alongside Denton and Allens West.
Awesome, by the way did you know the are going to be reopening the line between Newcastle and Ashington? Trains will call at Northumberland Park, Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Bebside, Bedlington and Ashington.
For at least 3 years in the last 6 years I have been an average of over 1% of the annual passengers at Reddish South (over 2% one year). It and Denton have 2 trains a week: the Stalybridge to Stockport returns and called at both stations both ways. If the guard ever bothered to sell tickets to the score of passengers getting on at Denton and Reddish South on the up service there would be at least a 0 added to passengers numbers. 2019 was my last trip, and the first time the guard offered tickets. Reddish South has some great nature and industrial history walks.

The footbridge at Teesside Airport has been closed due to safety concerns, thus the Middlesbrough-bound platform is closed.
Essentially, its services have been halved
But the passenger figures keep going up it was like 400 last year which is just screaming to northern to increase service

@@n1thmusic229 Redcar British Steel went from 40 passengers to 1060 in 2 years. A station where you cannot actually leave the platform. The increase in passengers is solely because of coverage by Geoff and others. The station still has no actual purpose.
Joining Hartlepool with a closed platform.The Hartlepool one is annoying as it causes a bottleneck with all through trains, expect for the Sunday only Darlington service that uses platform 3, using platform 2.If it had been a parkway there'd have been loads of money for a lift to platform 1.
Thought the service to Teesside Airport resumed then the timetable changed in 13 December (with just 1 a week like before)
I look at some of these stations and none of they seem to have any park and ride facilities even though there is ample population in the area. In fact a satellite station can be preferable if it has easier parking than a downtown station. For example the golf course station is closer to a lot of suburban housing than the downtown station yet has zero parking to serve them.

I do believe that Geoff Marshall went there before. I’ve been to several railway stations that are so quiet and peaceful.
I would of thought the stations on the route from Gainsborough to Brigg would of featured.
What Redcar British Steel Station on the TVL. Once you get off you can't leave the station. Cause the station is surrounded by private land.
Services were suspended last year. The station was closed in June

Informative - cannot see Denton and Reddish South surviving. The others retain possibilities, but Teeside Airport will depend on the Baccy Booze and Benidorm holiday trade reviving. 2023 perhaps?
They will because of how expensive and time consuming it is to close a station or a line. It's just easier to run a ghost service to meet the terms of their franchise agreement

My home station (Altnabreac) dropped just below 100 PPA for financial year April 2020 - March 2021 (obviously within NR's current Financial Control Period).
Lelant and Lelant Saltings on the St. Ives bay line have little to no visitors 👍🏼
Now that Stobart Group have a share in Teeside airport I hope (almost expect) them to rebuild the station nearer the terminal to have a set up like at Southend where the station is basically across the road from the terminal
Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think the problem here is that the line as a whole doesn't go anywhere near the airport, meaning that they would have to reroute the whole line, which is quite an undertaking for a station serving a small airport
@@JakeyG-eq1un The track and station are pretty much on the northern edge of the boundary, but they do move away from one another, so yeah not an ideal location. There was a campaign started about way back in 2009 to move the platform, I think it fell apart a bit because Peel who owned the airport at the time sold up the following year (possibly because they didn't want to compete with Doncaster Sheffield airport which shares a good amount of catchment area with Teeside) Stobart Group has a railway division and they actually manage the Southend Airport station and right now Carlise airport (also Stobart owned) has no passenger flights so isn't a direct competitor for Teeside so maybe just maybe it could all fall into place

Buckenham trains normally run to Lowestoft rather than Great Yarmouth, Saturdays only.

Fascinating. After catching a train from some of these stations to somewhere else, you can never actually get back there from your destination.
The population of these towns will continue to decline as residents take the train and then find that they can never return.....
You just have to wait until next week.
Luckily Teesside Airport still sees service, a whopping 1 train a week (I believe it used to actually get 2)

I believe that is Wedgwood and Barleston in Staffordshire. I don't know the frequency but knowing the TOCs it's probably 1 rail replacement bus service a week. I hear that they are going to repair and restart the service from one and close the other since they are not far apart. The term used for this tactic to drive away business from the stations to make them easier to close is called bustitution.
Coombe junction station is a request stop that means everyone wish to get off or board here must ask the guard first
Well compared to Canada, no station in the UK can be considored Quiet in terms of train volume or passenger numbers

You're still better off than if you had to depend on Amtrak. Huge sections of many states with no train service, and some Amtrak stations look more like bus shelters than a proper station.
What about Sugar Loaf in Mid Wales, the neighboring stations have Welsh names and also very quiet. Sugar Loaf is an English name, what would it be called in Welsh?

Station's that should of closed during the beaching cuts, so many more stations closed along, long forgotten branch lines, probably would of had more passengers nowadays, replacing many buses that serve those villages and towns.
They need to reopen more railways, for the increasing population, and to reduce cardon emissions.
I thought Newhaven Harbour was the least used station? Mind you, I think it may have closed in 2020.

Is Yorton (Shrewsbury to Wem) too busy for your list? Suprisingly busy, Yorton must be. I even once met someone who had actually got off at Yorton (on request). Population of Yorton village must be at least 50 people. I heard that the local landowner has a right to a station near his estate (Sasnsaw), maybe closing the station would need an act of parliament?

What about British Steel (Redcar)? On the Darlington-Saltburn line, the same as Teesside Airport, which used to have a shuttle-bus to the terminal which linked with the trains.
British Steel Redcar had its services withdrawn in 2019 and was officially closed in June 2020

Teeside Airport itself doesn't have a healthy flow of passengers for it's planes let alone that rail station and it's only the dogma of the Tees Valley Mayor,I think that he sees some kind of pride in having an airport on his patch? Perhaps record the noise of planes landing and taking off and pipe the racket via loudspeaker into the Mayor's front room?

This station gets 0 passengers a month due to the fact that while its legally closed no one can board or alight there and only one train stops there without even opening its doors just because its technically not closed yet.
If there is only one train a week, it could be said it is being engineered to fail.

Its called a catch point. Often seen on sidings and such to prevent trains overrunning a signal and going onto the mainline.
Since that's coombe junction halt, the siding is just the line from the cement works.
There's an interesting video of ivatt class 2 45620 with a TPO at the GCR loughborough derailing at a catchpoint due to a signaller error.
Yeah it's deliberate. Trap points they're called (catch points are specifically for trains going the wrong way on a steep gradient). The idea is if a train runs away on the freight line (where standards are more lax than on the mainlines) it will derail instead of entering the mainline and potentially coming into conflict with passenger trains.
