That's the sad side effect of the mainstreaming of rpgs. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate being able to find a tabletop group with relative ease and the fact that I can share my interests with more people. That said, most AAA studios exist for the sole purpose of maximizing profit, not making a great game and that results in games that are fun but shallow and uninspired. I've got a tip. Don't let the game automatically assign talents. Definitely take those skill save talents immediately to prevent spending excess money on your crew and ship - the more crew you take on, the more you have to payout for wages - and having crew with useless talents for your build is detrimental.
I myself just finished another solid 6 hour session in the Captain's chair as one does in the time of viruses. I also happen to enjoy the balls outta this game. Awesome.
Do you have any tips when you get those big battleships with alot of crew ? I want to be able to fight those 2nd kind of snake xenos on the ships and dont wanna get smoked. Tips of weapons operating it etc would be helpful
Hey there! I haven’t played in quite a long time now, and considering how often TB patches their games, it’s very likely my info on that is out of date. I don’t touch on that kind of thing in this video for exactly this reason, expecting optimal builds to change over time. Still, I can share at least the last build I had, many years old that it is. I have an impossible difficulty commander run up on UA-cam, and I just checked some of the later videos for what I was flying. Looks like I went with a carrier, high defense/evasion (which I believe was meta at the time). Launch fighters, close range, and start blasting with rail guns, a gravcannon, and a plasma battery. Hope that helps, and is at all still relevant!

How do you prevent crew from losing moral and leaving? I can have 100% moral when I leave, fly to the nearest planet and then when I get there 2-4 crew members run off. There doesn’t seem to be any way to fix their moral without landing and landing just allows them to run off. Catch 22? Hints?
First question might be why you're losing so much morale from just flying around. If it's just from flying around, are your crew skills too low for the ship you're in? Not enough of the saving talents? You might need to change up how you spend your talent points or get more basic crew to shore up your weak points. You can eventually get some talents as well that allow you to boost morale from some encounters, though I can't really the specifics so well here. I've got a series on YT, probably one of the combat impossible ones, where I had to get into fights with merchants to boost my morale. Lastly, when you land at a port, your crew is more likely to leave from low morale if they are a part of the faction (as in where you recruited them from) that the port belongs to. You can mitigate this by stopping off at factions that you haven't interacted with much, and thus have little or no crew from there. Hope that helps, and that my info isn't terribly outdated :)

I find playing as a trader a complete waste of time. I make way more money a whole lot faster by doing contact missions. Stopping to trade for peanuts is just slowing me down from making the real money. Trading is pointless, unless you just want to do it for something to do as a hobby.
Trading is just on the side, like Patrol/Blockade/Spy. Something you do at each stop to get a little boost. To ignore it completely would be a waste. I make a few hundred to a few thousand every other stop, and some stops I make over $25K. (Level 7) It takes a moment to look at the Atlas and see what opportunities are along the way, you might make a slight adjustment for a detour stop. The thing I'm trying to figure out is Rumors. I hardly ever use them, and not sure how to maximize benefit from them.
That's something you buy. I believe Industrial zones have it, and possibly others but I can't remember exactly. If you look at the mission it probably tells you where you can find it.
Quick question. @22:53 you say that you rolled the equivalent of 85 Strong Dice, and if you do the math on the oppositions roll it adds up to 91.5 (or 92 if the game rounds up), am I missing something else on screen? It looks like you won the dice check (showing the green check mark), so does the "Safety Protocols Talent" override this somehow? Great video so far!
We rolled 85, they rolled 91.5, so we lost. It probably shouldn't show the green check mark there. The Safety Protocols Talent allows us to automatically pass a failed ship ops test, so even though we failed the dice roll, our talent swooped in and saved the day.
Hi man, any chance you make a video explaining the crew pick, talents assign, weapons choice and all you need before your 1st flight? I see a lot of things and I barely understand anything (like, for instance, the red and blue dots and the star in the talents and the weapongs. Thx a lot for the tips btw and thanks in advance
In the beginning I'd recommend just letting the game pick your initial talents. Then after that just read carefully and make some choices! If you're playing on the lower difficulties you won't be punished for not making all the "optimal" choices and it's the best way to learn what you like and what's good. The red and blue dots represent positions of you and the enemy, and are used in crew combat. There are 4 positions on each side in crew combat The dots that each crew combat talent has represent where it can be used from, and where it can hit. The stars are used in ship combat and represent range. Certain talents can only be used at certain ranges, and the stars show that. Hope that help and feel free to ask any more questions :)
when it comes to choosing weps, crews, and talents, all of that comes down to the angle you want to work. for example, i prefer explore above all else. so i will have a captain explorer with at least 5 crew that have explorer as a secondary class. also i like fighting in space at range 5, so i will always choose those weapons. so basically find a focus and then build towards that.
I also found myself a bit lost in the mid to late game often and what I've figured out was I should set a goal for myself when starting a run. Get rich as hell, fight the Jyeeta aliens and win, complete as many storylines as you can, help your chosen faction win as many conflicts as possible, become successful in ship or crew combat on Impossible difficulty, or become loved by every faction.

As far as strong dice vs standard dice goes, from my understanding your explanation is partially incorrect. In a way, standard dice are worth only half a strong dice but not in the way you presented it. Essentially, when you have strong and standard dice rolls, a certain amount of dice will be rolled and each roll is either considered a pass or a failure. Both strong and standard dice are d10. Strong dice pass if they roll a 6 or above. Standard dice pass if they roll an 8 or above. So strong dice are more likely to pass than standard dice, but once those rolls are done and you see the numbers on the UI, the number of strong dice and the number of standard dice are worth the same and are simply added to each other. So if you roll 6 strong dice and 7 standard vs 10 strong dice and 2 standard dice, it's considered a success for you.
This game starts basically as a smaller, Single Player version of Eve Online, but it soon becomes clear that there is no purpose, other than to build a fleet and kick some ass. If you're up for that, this is a great game, but if you're expecting the same level of depth to continue once you got some colonies and completed the only 2 storyline missions, you will be disappointed. There is no destruction of colonies, no defeating other factions and taking over their planets, no elaborate or even logical trade possible, there is no build-up of a large empire, there is just constant harassment on your colonies from Pathers who can't be eradicated because they don't have bases, and by pirates who can't be eradicated because they keep spawning out of nowhere. There is just building up a fleet and kicking ass with that fleet, and while that's pretty cool, without any purpose behind it, it started to become repetitive quite fast for me.
Methink you mean this for a Starsector video. Valid criticism of the game there too. The nexerellin mod helps with some of those, but in the end the game is what it is. Primary goal is to build a big fleet and kick ass and it's super fun to do that!

Its on sale atm in the Google play store, so here I am watching - trying to see if the game is for me :)
Was it?
@@ManTheMaker I must have been switching between tabs and put my comment here by accident... My bad! But rather impressive that you knew I was talking about Starsector! I guess if you played it, you recognized specific names.
Thanks for the reply man. Oh, and great video about Star Traders btw! Seems I gotta check that out.
@@TheBushdoctor68 lol indeed, "constant harassment on your colonies from Pathers" made it obvious as it's a pain I well know!
Beginners don't know what a contact is😕
Awesome video, thank you.
Side note- you're mispronouncing attribute. It's pronounced differently when used as a noun.
Well no shit. It might be too late for me to change so we'll see what happens lol.
AT-ributes. Not some much with the Ah-tributes.
I have already been learned by sarconic. I'll never make the mistake again I promise!

Pfffft lots of repeats man.
And lots of mistakes in the text.
Not my cup of tea.
I encourage everyone to drink the tea that is their cup.
That GoT reference at the end was so dumb.
No like for you.
Why did your parents name you ManTheMaker it’s such a weird name?
Homo faber suae quisque fortunae
@@ManTheMaker I dl star traders after watching this vid, it’s quite enjoyable
@@BeardedGuy_Tawhid That was a good decision.
