You’ll need to get a dedicated employee that sells only on eBay/Amazon and any other online selling you prefer but that position is vital as you need to create cash from your purchases, most people won’t tell you this but it’s vital for this type of business
@@bradleydunlop1615 no most store owners hope they can sell it in store but the reality is about 33% of your trades sell in store within a year unless it’s current gen titles while the other 66% sit on a shelf.Believe it or not most businesses like this don’t make a singular employee do this because of cost or the thought that they will do it themselves to save money and pay themselves, many times store owners never receive a paycheck unless they have an online sales dept which is what keeps you in this game,it’s fun and cool to get old stuff in but as an adult you still have to feed your family so it’s best to hire a part or full time individual with the skill to list at least 25 less able items per day so 175 pieces per week, some will sell and others will wait till the 4th quarter to sell because of Christmas but they will sell eventually.

Love the passion for the business! Only concern I have is the wide variety and the amount of trade in you guys accept as inventory. It's your business, but even you addressed that space is an issue. Certainly don't wish any stress upon you, but you've got this! Your decision on the Skylanders (Sales Numbers) is great, because at the end of the day sales is what pays the bills.
Owning and running a business can have its ups and downs, but don't get too discouraged. You've accomplished what some of us can only dream of (owning a game/retro toy store)! As some have mentioned, maybe consider the following to help you and your amazing team: -Reduce Inventory: Don't buy more new items or accept too many trade-ins until a good amount of stock is sold. Start setting some monthly/quarterly sales goals to help gauge when to buy new items/accept more trade-ins. - Set guidelines or a limit on trade-ins: It's great to see the amazing retro stuff on the channel, but too much of it at once can increase inventory which can be a bad thing in the long run if it sits on the shelf for months. Perhaps, get Riff and Ricky to buy some of that excess inventory😊. -Establish an online store: Many of your fans like me don't live near your beloved Arkansas, but I definitely would buy stuff from your store online if we could! -Don't overwork whether it's with the store or your UA-cam channels: There's always going to be some unfinished work at the end of the day, but know when to stop and go home to rest and recharge. Life is short, and there's only 24 hours in a day. Make time to care for yourself and your family. You already work so much to bring joy and nostalgia feels to your fans with your retro finds on a weekly basis, so you deserve some "Me" time.
I hope Rick see’s this comment from you. He needs to read this entire comment a few times. It’s all true. Everything you say. It’s really good advice for him. We all want things from Rick. He has his own needs. We want him to succeed and be healthy in business but mostly as a person. If not he could burn out. Thanks for putting this comment together it can help everyone really. I can tell you’re a really good person and wise beyond your years or just experienced in life.
@Jeff Hoon I appreciate the reply. I'm about the same age as Retro Rick and can relate to being stressed when life gets hectic. Losing both my parents, losing my job, getting taken advantage of by incompetent home contractors, and having a health scare are just some chaotic moments I experienced in just the last few years. Realizing the stress is there, praying, and seeking professional help to process my emotions, plus having support and care from my siblings and friends, helped me persevere through those difficult times. I'm sure things are stressful for Rick as owning a game/toy store plus keeping fresh content on both channels is definitely not an easy task. So, I posted the comment so that Rick (and others who may be feeling stressed out in life right now) can make sure to take time out of your busy days to care for yourself. Whether it's just taking a much needed vacation or seeking professional health to restore one's mental well-being is very important. It's helped me so far, so I figure to share.
I love this channel! This is my new favorite since the $10 video game collection doesn't get as much love. I love seeing the development of the store. It would be awesome to see clips of what people are buying too!
You need to hire people to just clean test and post on ebay. Throw all the duplicate plushes on ebay so you can create a blanket listing letting them know that they wont get the one pictured. Or just start storing the expensive stuff for retirement and posting the commons cheap.
You need a dedicated employee running your online presence, ebay, amazon, etc. You'd turn over so much more inventory by expanding your presence online.
I’d be interested to see how ricks much looser policy of what they accept for trade ins, impacts the business long term. It almost seems like it’s turning into a flea market.
I'm a local resident in the town. TBH...there's a pretty entrenched flea market not very far and in a less nice but more convenient location. It is focused on games though.
Definitely can relate to this. Especially this time of year with the holidays. But think, you are creating a community that people will cherish. You are creating an atmosphere that people have always wanted. You should be proud
Dude, I am SO happy for you! I know it's stressful and hard work, but that's how most of the best things in life, are. You are living a gamer's dream! Congrats on all your success. I hope to someday be out in that neck of the woods so I can check out the store. You are the living embodiment of my channel's tag line: "Keep retro gaming alive, because one day, your games...will be retro, too."
You're going to have to cut the fat. You want to bring everything into the store and people are going to take advantage of that. You have a guy who has a booth and is bringing to you. To me that's a red flag cause it seems like he can't sell it in his place so he's dumping it on you. It's also going to cause a lot of disorder you should expand and make that the retro clothes, electronics etc if you wanna venture out to that kind of stuff. But you should leave it for the time being a strictly video game store. Or build a extra floor at the very least for that certain stuff.
My very same thought, he should just be concentrating on it being a games store. Eventually all this extra stuff like used clothes, game toys, etc. will just end up stacking up and causing clutter and chaos. Not to mention that he’s going to have a hard time selling it, I think we all want him to succeed, and so far that’s a really awesome gaming store.
Absolutely agree. I worked at a comic/vintage toys and video game store. We would buy everything resulting in stuff just sitting for YEARS. I started in 2015 and they had stuff there from 2 years before I started working there. Some was still there in 2021 when I left.
I think it’s a fine line of selling it (actually wanting it to sell) and a bit of displaying it, the retro stuff is gonna sell online and that’s where he should keep it, sure it’s cool and stuff like that but when I go into a game store 98% of the time it’s for the games, I feel it’s a lot like GameStop/think geek, with think geek folding quickly, think geek was a cool concept and as a stand alone store I loved going in there to see just that stuff, it might be a little early and idk but possibly a second place for that stuff , just because it’s retro stuff doesn’t mean it goes hand in hand with retro games
I’d imagine so… whatever the rent is, plus electricity, plus insurance, plus paying employees…. That much is just the breaking even point every month. It has to be a serious grind. Can’t help but respect your hustle for the love of classic games.
Don’t stress too much man. Things will settle after some of the initial hype dies down. Plus, you’ll definitely catch a rhythm with what sells and what doesn’t.
Rick this is awesome! I understand the frustration of all the trade ins however you’re going to make so much back after it all gets displayed! I wish I was near Arkansas, I’d visit often in a heartbeat
The sad thing about most gamestores I've seen near me is that they end up closing. People used them like a pawn shop. A place where they can get rid of their stuff tk get some cash or get something new. The last store where I live the owner told me they just got more trade ins tham sales. People purchased with the store credit. So basically the inventory keeps growing and growing and very little sales.
Thank you for using the right price stickers. My local video game store (Nostalgic Video Games, Florence KY) uses stickers that ruin the boxes and are almost impossible to get off!
I know some stores give themself a certain amount of stuff they can trade in every day or a certain dollar amount. I never understood why but now seeing how much stuff you're getting traded in might be why haha
You may want to start being a bit more picky until you can get caught up, i know its hard to do when people are constantly bringing in great stuff. Great Video
Gotta put together a website for the store man. It would also be super helpful to put the store address in the video or channel description. You keep saying come visit or come hang out............ but where? XD
I think you are taking the right approach. Switching Skylanders ($2.95) for the Amibos (estimated $25 to $300 or more) will make more money. Taking out board games or reducing their footprint is smart. Vintage toys have a higher margin and sell better. Open up the back storeroom of your store for periodic sales to VIP customers. Have a parking lot sale. Sell spaces to other vendors who sell vintage. Are you wanting more space for things like Skylanders?
I can't wait to come check out the store this summer when i take my vacation. Your store looks amazing and I can't wait to get more n64 games to add to my collection.
Prehapes you need to bring in half day closer on a quiet day but still have the staff in (be it a morning or afternoon) where you just focus on sorting trade ins, rearranging the store, store tidying/cleaning, training etc
Don’t listen to everyone. Do what you’re passionate about. Your passion has gotten you this far. I think you should start a eBay store though, because I want one of those cups!!
I love your videos and I'm super stoked you have your own store, that's really the dream right? The one thing I don't understand is the whole McDonalds thing. I can see the items with a video game connection but mugs? Rick I appreciate your connection to the burger chain but its a video game store. Keep up the awesome content!
Contra 4 is awesome, but definitely tough as nails, even by Contra standards. Also, the Amiibo display looks great! The vintage shirts and hats are cool, but I would be concerned that if they’re not game or pop culture related, you might have a tough time moving them at the store. But what do I know 🤷🏻♂️ Don’t burn yourself out homie, we love the content and want to see you succeed ❤️
There is some great suggestions in the comments, I also think maybe you should look at either updating your CRM or really learning it so your intake is faster. If that isn't a bottle neck then maybe bring on someone just to research and price things out through the day for like 4 hrs while ya'll are working and you can catch up quick doing that.
What I’ve seen for some people that own card shops and game shops they have an eBay shop too to sell items they can’t sell in person and I’ve heard it’s successful 🙌🏻
Thats why its failing lol, hes basically accepting everything even plush toys because hes deep down a collector and most people dont want that stuff or have the same appreciation as him
You need an area of the store set up for whatnot live sales. A little sound studio with windows so customers can watch. A ton of those trade in items would be perfect. Keeps the inventory moving and selling.
Bro one of my favorite channels is double jump video games ran by Cooper and his girlfriend Abby. He has a massive collection and the game store. He also runs a website and talks about how much business he gets for it. So that's also a thought. Not sure if you already have one. But it gives people like me up here in Wisconsin an opportunity to support you guys.
Ok… I’ve been owned and run several businesses. Not that I’m an expert but.. I’m curious how quickly increased Inventory levels and slowing through put will destroy cash flow Most people are screaming for online retail for this store. That’s a start. The breadth of product types we keep seeing being taken in seems like it would also put additional risk on how quickly products turn Let’s see what happens Maybe I stop taking cheap shots from the back row and just fly out to chat with this guy. Hope it works out.
Offer store credit to people you trust to help come in and price/process stuff. The store I worked at would do that when we were understaffed and had a lot of purchases to process.
Hey Rick great meeting you in the store Saturday. Excited to see if I get a shoutout for the sealed TMNT and the Power Rangers VHS. Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving!
Yo Rick, you ever think about making the store accessible to us out of town folk? I tried searching google to see if you had an online store but nada. I only ask because I’m down to drop some money and being that there are crappy stores here around me, I end up shopping at estarland located in VA. I’m sure I’m not the only one that would like to shop at this place and support you!
Great store, is it possible to have a in store subscription to play? For example, an arcade setup for fighting games using console and hosting weekly tournament?
I really like that you go into the biz as a collector. I know someone who has thier spot in the swap meet but is struggling to make ends meet bc of how much trade in stuff they get. I would say it’s cool to get stuff for credit but if you trade stuff that no one is really looking for, then you’ll get left with the stuff that doesn’t need to be in the store. Unfortunately, the owner of the store is not in the best of health and is willing to sell the spot, with 2-3 storage unit and whatever he has in his basement storage for about at least 6 figures. Which is a tough sell even if he does give the list of customers that have layaway orders. He did ask me what I thought about it but 6 figures is a lot lol. Just some advice from someone who knows a person with a game store.
My county in ny gamestop is required to 1 hold every single game 7 days after trade no matter the amount of transaction madden 2002 still track it 2 up load a copy of driver license to a county website and what they traded. My local gamestore had to shut down bc of this bs
Don't you mean, owning a new game store in a soon to be full recession is tough. I mean it's probably going to be more stressful as we continue to see food prices climb even more... Good luck! I do enjoy the passion you show, just worried it may become too much down the road... 🙃
The Tommy Jeans x Nintendo was a way for Tommy to promote their jeans and specifically their overalls and the deep pockets were showcased as fitting the hottest gaming device / Gameboy.
If the plush have hook tags on them you could string a line (high enough no one would get hurt) and hang them from there. Or maybe put them in a new fishing net up and out of the way. You might want to hire some temp workers for the next few weeks. Even if it's just someone to run the register, and clean.
I don’t know anything about the collectors market for toys but a few videos ago I couldn’t believe he put stickers on those boxes good to know they’re not actually sticky haha
Business question: How is any game store able to stay afloat with such a high volume of trades? Doesn't this encourage fewer people to pay for product out of pocket? Seems like this would hurt profit a ton if everyone is just trading in, especially if they want cash instead of store credit. This is genuine curiosity, I have literally no clue how to run a game store, so I'm not trying to tell you what to do haha.
Typically customers do want store credit over cash, as the return is higher on store credit. It incentivizes loyalty and often the customer will spend some of their own money on top of the credit when purchasing an item.
Just wondering if dealing with trade-ins is profitable. It takes time to clean/process and inventory space. I guess it's similar to running a pawn shop, and the effort pays off in the long-run.
You’ll need to get a dedicated employee that sells only on eBay/Amazon and any other online selling you prefer but that position is vital as you need to create cash from your purchases, most people won’t tell you this but it’s vital for this type of business

I like the post-it note sticky trick. I think a cheap bin near the counter would be great for impulse buying. $1 games should fly.

Hit me up, I've got a surprise for you.
What I’ve seen for some people that own card shops and game shops they have an eBay shop too to sell items they can’t sell in person and I’ve heard it’s successful 🙌🏻
You're literally turning this GameStore, into a large-scale version of your Games Room, and I freakin' love it, aha.
Thats why its failing lol, hes basically accepting everything even plush toys because hes deep down a collector and most people dont want that stuff or have the same appreciation as him
He's Turning it into an expensive flee market.
"We didn't use to take these in, but we do now" needs to be a T-shirt haha
Ok… I’ve been owned and run several businesses. Not that I’m an expert but..
I’m curious how quickly increased Inventory levels and slowing through put will destroy cash flow
Most people are screaming for online retail for this store. That’s a start.
The breadth of product types we keep seeing being taken in seems like it would also put additional risk on how quickly products turn
Let’s see what happens
Maybe I stop taking cheap shots from the back row and just fly out to chat with this guy.
Hope it works out.
Looks like one hell of store you've got there, wish it was near me
enjoying your content. good luck.
5:49 when I picked up my Tommy hilghfiger gameboy a few years back I kept trying to rub off the logo. My speaker was also broken
Offer store credit to people you trust to help come in and price/process stuff. The store I worked at would do that when we were understaffed and had a lot of purchases to process.
The man on your shirt is the goat of dirt late model racing
Hey Rick great meeting you in the store Saturday. Excited to see if I get a shoutout for the sealed TMNT and the Power Rangers VHS. Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving!
Good stuff man keep it up and see you on the next
I hear ya. Customers are great, but peace in the store is a must.
i literally have the large mario karts rc from gamecube still in original boxes and thought id never see another set! awesomeness
Well bro honestly you working whit what you like...it's an awesome thing I think! 😎
You're a good businessman and make things fun 👍

Hit me up, I've got a surprise for you
My county in ny gamestop is required to
1 hold every single game 7 days after trade no matter the amount of transaction madden 2002 still track it
2 up load a copy of driver license to a county website and what they traded.
My local gamestore had to shut down bc of this bs
Those DK and Mario RC cars! 🔥
2:57 not gonna lie this is totally me when tightening my garden hose faucet.

Thanks for watching and commenting got something for you.
I love that sticky note idea
Don't you mean, owning a new game store in a soon to be full recession is tough. I mean it's probably going to be more stressful as we continue to see food prices climb even more... Good luck! I do enjoy the passion you show, just worried it may become too much down the road... 🙃
The Tommy Jeans x Nintendo was a way for Tommy to promote their jeans and specifically their overalls and the deep pockets were showcased as fitting the hottest gaming device / Gameboy.
Rick, out of curiosity are you guys profitable?
Also could you have someone in your employ work solely on trade ins?
If the plush have hook tags on them you could string a line (high enough no one would get hurt) and hang them from there. Or maybe put them in a new fishing net up and out of the way. You might want to hire some temp workers for the next few weeks. Even if it's just someone to run the register, and clean.
I don’t know anything about the collectors market for toys but a few videos ago I couldn’t believe he put stickers on those boxes good to know they’re not actually sticky haha
Instantly knew what that yellow GameBoy was. That’s the one I had as a kid. Wish I would have kept it.
If I might ask what’s the name of the store? I’d love to stop by and look around at all the cool stuff!
Where did you get your metal drawers? Those are nice.
I need that Turtle TV!!! I've been trying to find one!
Hi, Rick looks like everything is going great, will you be having a online site for us that can’t make it out there. Thank you!!
Your shop seems awsome. Sad that it ain't in my country.
So much inventory love it
Just wondering if dealing with trade-ins is profitable. It takes time to clean/process and inventory space. I guess it's similar to running a pawn shop, and the effort pays off in the long-run.
Let's talk about the Scott Bloomquist shirt. Nice choice👌👌
If you're running out of space, you might want to axe the life sized Hulk and Slimer, lol.
bad ass store! subbed
How do I go about opening a game store? And I would love to work at a game store🎮🎮
love the shirt scott is the man
Someof them trade ins are unreal and hopefuly the stress will go down
Store is becoming its own flea market lol. It's awesome! Wish I was closer.
That Sonic shirt is AMAZING
