A short tutorial on how to change the axles in Wahoo Speedplay pedals, with bike fitting expert Neill Stanbury.

Love the take at the end
haha, uploaded the wrong edit! But all good, nothing to see here. Cam
Buen video , bien explicado , enhorabuena !!!!
Thanks for all the efforts! Neill is the definition of Mastery.
Could we get a video what should be different for gravel biking? Quite similar to the mtb video you guys did. Maybe also discuss long-distance trips on those bikes which is quite a trending topic at the moment.
As always simple and useful. Well done. Now where is that white wall !!
Thank you for the demo video. I tried a 3mm Allen, did not work for me. I used a 20T torx, that worked 😉
Have you determined the cause of the lateral movement many new wahoo Speedplay users are having? Wahoo says they’ve fixed the issue but replacement pedals are having the same problem, sometimes within the first one or two rides. Is it the bearings, or pedal body, or something else?
Bro, great vid, do you know what type of bearing grease was used on the spindle, cheers mate
2:55 just get one of these after seeing this video.
This lube is awesome, it's easier to clip in/clip out and don't make the pedals and cleats greasy !
Does this work with speed play zero and also the lower priced comp model ? Thanks !
Spray every couple weeks? Try every other ride or two. Also, get their optional stain steel wear plates for the cleat base. It will extend the life of the cleats a lot. Half-way thru you can even flip them over for a new wear surface.
What lube did Neill put on the pedal spindle?
Hello, to do maintenance on this pedals (wahoo version) there's only to remove axle and put some grease? For regular maintenance one time a week spray little bit PTFE drylube on pedals or cleat is enough?
There's a torque for 3mm allen screw or just by hand?
It's not possible to change the bearing in the future? The solution is changing the axle for a new one?
Thanks for the video :)
Is there a difference between the older speedplay axles and the wahoo?
Are every Wahoo type of pedals dismountable ?
I am on my 6th pair of these pedals due to lateral movement of the pedal body on the shaft. Wahoo have replaced them immediately and the customer service has been excellent BUT the problem is there. This is NOT normal wear, each of the failures happens within 100 miles of riding and can happen to LH or RH pedal. Do we know the cause, and have you come across these failures?
I am guessing this problem is a component failure, plastic or nylon washer/spacer failing, but would be good to know.
From my experience this has not improved at all.
Can you provide a link to the aftermarket spindles that you would recommend?
We'll get Neill onto that one. Stay tuned.
I second that
I have the J&L from ebay. The quality is perfect!
I third that, I have swapped the old speedplay version and you should put a drop of (not to strong, purple?) threadlock on the screw, the snap you hear when the screw is undone is threadlock giving way.
@@NigelJMcD I had to use locktight to keep my screws from backing out
What is the US company are you referring to?
I just received my titanium spindles from J&L and the part that goes inside the pedal is 2mm too wide..! I have the previous Speedplays..!
PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene and it is teflon (tephlon)
There you go, you learn something new every day. Thanks! - Neill
I actually use one of these axles on one side courtesy of Neill but my question centres around the ability to change axles with the power meter version of the pedal? Thanks
G'day Stuart, I'm not 100% sure yet (never had to do it) but my guess would be the spindle bearing tapers/shoulders would be totally different. I've not yet had the chance or need to pull one apart - and I'd be reluctant to in case it messed up the strain guages in the power pod! - Neill
@@roadcyclingacademy6476 Thanks Neill I’d agree with that. My thoughts are get a single sided power unit which is LHS I think then just change the axle in the RHS which is the one I need to change. Possibly a work around? Thanks again.
Does saddle height need to be changed if going wider on the stance?
Probably. The foot is further away from the saddle
When would you want to switch those out?
Typically if the rider has had too many doughnuts and their knees are tracking wide of the pedal centre, or if there are other symptoms of hip impingement/biomechanical issues from the feet being too close together. There are a LOT of potential reasons which unfortunately are highly variable between people. - Neill
most importantly, why didn't you use the posed thumbnail? 😂
it's all about the thumbnail
You’re not changing Q-Factor, you’re changing Stance.
Title is wrong. Wheels have axles. Pedals have spindles!
do wheel chairs have axles or spindles?
@@scotth3354 don't be silly, I said WHEELS have axles, wheelchairs have wheels, duh!
