  • Pedalchecker from hell #8: The Best Guitar Cable | Comparison
    Here´s a comparison of some of my absolutely favourite cables.
    The capacitance of a cable affects the tone massively. The higher the capacitance, the more the treble attenuation...means 50 picofarad (pf) can sound "trebly" and a cable with 90 picofarad can sound "muddy". Sound is very subjective. The cable must fit your style and the complete gear-environment (signal chain). Some aspects of a cable are the overall sound (trebly, bassy, tight, muddy, warm,...), punch, volume, noise, flexibility, durable, plugs, etc.
    The cables are: 1. Sommer Cable "Spirit XXL" 2. David LaBoga "Metal" 3. Sommer Cable "Spirit LLX" 4. Mogami 2524 5. Sommer Cable "Richard Z. Kruspe" Signature 6. Intex "IntexCable"
    7. Sommer Cable "Classique" 8. NoName "Lo Budget"
    In this video I played 3 different sounds (clean-dist.lead-dist.rhthm). You can always check the frequency diagram.
    The clean sound was recorded directly to the interface into Pro Tools. No amp, no fx,
    The crunch sounds are recorded through the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx (no compressor or gate). All files are mono.
    Gear: Knaggs Guitars "Keya", Gravity Picks, Axe-Fx, RME Fireface, Pro Tools.

    Very good comparison. The Spirit XXL, and LLX had the best fidelity when plugged directly into the interface. BUT since the Fractal is a simulator, the overdrive comparison is a false sound image. The overdrive should have been performed on a unit like the Laney IRT-Pulse. It would have been a tube overdrive signal fed directly into the interface just like the clean signals. If I had to choose a better overdrive sound from these cables, then the La Boga. It has a slight rise in mids, so It sounded incredibly thick and had a nasal growl with overdrive. If you were going to include a Mogami, then I would have chosen the 3302 (Platinum), or the 3368(Elite). They are superior to the 2425. Also I would include the Klotz AC110, or the Titanium. Also Oyaide G-spot, and the Force 77'. Also Ex-Pro has an incredible cable too

      I loved Klotz Titanium (it totally crushed Mogami 2524) until I got Sommer Spirit LLX 2 days ago and the difference is noticeable through an EVH tube amp.
      I recorded 1 clip chaninging nothing other than the cable, sliced the clip into two parts to flip back and forth and the difference was quite noticeable, even at only 10ft.
      I will probably make a shorter, 6ft one for recording at a desk, an connected to a pedalboard, 15ft for stage and 10ft for home.
      Laboga comes out to be more expensive and seems to add a little of an effect, but I do like braided cables.
      In the end, cables offer a filtering effect though, so any given cable might sound better with a certain guitar/pickup/electronic combination...
      But I think that the Sommer is of such high quality, that if you wanted to match the sound of a cable with higher capacitance, you could get away with calculating the capacitance and making the cable longer to match another cable.
      For example of 2524 were your thing, you could make the LLX twice as long as the Mogami and still come out ahead.
      2524 is great for buffered signals though.. Or active pickups which are buffered to begin with.

    The spirit LLX have way more clarity than the others. The Spirit XXL is pretty good too.

    Great test mister. Is the length of the cables same for each and every cable? Can you please tell me the measurements? By the way Sommer Cable "Spirit LLX" slays them all.

    thanks for that. I've been using LLX for a long time, but I was starting to doubt whether it really makes much difference for shorter cable lengths (5-6m). your 4.5m tests show that hell yeah it does! some people seem to like the resonance peak lower from higher capacitance cable (and I get why), but from your shootout I'm pleased to stick with LLX (except for the price).

    Are variations in sound due to cable or playing? IT's impossible to play everything identically, a comparison is only valid if a looper is used. Where the cables the same length? If yes, which?

    • @FrankSteffenMueller
      @FrankSteffenMueller  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your respond. I didn't used a Looper because I didn't want to color the sound with another unit and more cables. Cable lenght where 4.50 meter each. I'm a pro guitar player. I can play everything nearly identical. Cheers my friend.

      @@FrankSteffenMueller I don't doubt your ability, not in the least. But we're all human and tiny changes in pick placement have more effect than differences between top of the line cables.
      On the video there's a slight difference between Sommer XXL and LLX (the latter being slightly brighter). Are you yourself convinced it's not due to playing? Not doubting you, simply trying to get to the bottom of this and make a purchasing decision.

    I've been using The Spirit XXL live for some time, but today I got a surprise, I think unpleasant, in my studio I never have them, I use another type of normal, generic cables, but today I brought the Spirit XXL and the surprise is that everything It sounds much lower in volume and without bass! I had to review the entire signal chain in case something was wrong, but no, trying normal cables and another look at Spirit XXL, the drop in volume and bass is brutal! It forced me to change parameters in the Eq and gain. I think I will not buy or recommend The Spirit XXL again.

      @@javableak Do not use a faulty cables! Probably a wire is broken somewhere and has little contact. Then it can also happen that it is quieter. I would not use the cable again. Hi, im from Chile.
    I bought 10 meters of cable spiritr LLX ( two cable 6 and 4 meters), and i use it in my electric bass, but the sound changed a lot, lost punch and a little treble too, in comparation with my rock cable warwick.
    I did the same test with an electric guitar and distortion sounded less aggressive, like a "Dolby" effect. I put neutrik connectors. please help me.

    • @FrankSteffenMueller
      @FrankSteffenMueller  8 років тому +2

      Hi Claudio, I´m sorry to hear that. To be honest, I can´t understand why the LLX cable sounds less punchy with less treble. I still love this cable and use it mostly in my studio. The other cable I love is the XXL cable...nothing spectacular, but an overall great cable. The Sommer Cable The Spirit LLX is a high end low loss instrument cable (only 52pF) and sounds very pressureful and clear with Bass, Guitar, Keyboard, ... Low loss of signal transmission due extreme low capacity. So...there must be something wrong with your cable! I try to talk to Sommercable about your issue. Cheers, Frank

      Hola Claudio, any news about your cable issue? I talked to a tech at sommer. I soldered some new cables and I had the same problem with a weak thin sound. It´s the soldering. Remove the black carbon layer. The carbon layer may not touch the other parts. Hope that works!

    • @csm1275gt
      @csm1275gt 8 років тому

      Hi Frank, yes, i have news¡¡
      The cable is defective from the factory. I cut the cable in many parts, and now works fine.
      I buyed 11 meter, but now i have two cables of 3 meters. The soldering is not the problem, the problem is the cable,because if you twist the cable, the cable sound good. I tested the resistance, and now works fine, but i loose many time and many meters of a expensive cable.
      I have a pictures on the test.
      Regards,
      Claudio
