  • DARPA revealed upgrades to its Atlas robot on January 20, 2015. The robot was redesigned for DARPA by Boston Dynamics, with the goal of improving power efficiency to better support battery operation. Approximately 75 percent of the robot was rebuilt; only the lower legs and feet were carried over from the original design. The upgraded robot will be used by up to seven teams competing in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals, which will take place June 5-6, 2015, at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
    Visit www.theroboticschallenge.org for more information.

      It's the craziest design, power packs should be positioned internally within segmented areas for balance. Seems like they are just toying with the idea because they can obviously do much better than that.

      tony budz The positioning of the battery is very human, much like us wearing a backpack, weight distribution in a backpack causes no problems unless the weight is beyond a certain level.
      That said, it's DARPA pretty sure anything you have thought of they have thought of.

      tony budz The battery pack must be able to be replaced easily and sometimes quickly. It may still very well be in perfect balance.

      I suppose, not to belittle the design, I guess it makes no difference to the robot where the pdu is located when its stuck with flat feet. :)

      The public arena is the most advanced there is. Because it is part of industry, science, education and open source development.
      If this was done in private it would just be a handful of people carry out research but when robotics is public it involves millions of people.

    The three most important innovations that Atlas needs.
    1- processing information faster, so he can think and move faster.
    2- Flexibility and movement, feet should be for all terrains, because flat feet is only good for flat surfaces.
    3-where are the hands and fingers?
    I don't see any human alike fingers, and hands are long and bulking arms, they need to improve and change that, I would recommend lighter metals for the arms, hands and finger, something like the polygraffito metal use for the racing cars, is light weight and flexible.

    "This new pump makes the robot much quieter. Now the teams can operate the robot without the need for any hearing protection." Something I've long wondered about: Are there any applications where it would make sense not to have the higher-level processing functions (i.e., the "brain") on board the robot itself? That is, have it running on some stationary platform nearby, with wireless communications allowing the brain to receive sensor data and issue high-level motor commands.
    I would think that such would be the case when you need both a light weight robot and a high level of processing. And perhaps it would also be more practical in settings where the robot's area of operation (i.e., distance from the processor) is relatively limited.
    Is this actually being done by anyone?

    Ultron got beat up by Vision because he when through his body and detach head from body.
    so robots would need a body that would function without a head, or even if they take there heads off, and should have heads that can be fix, replace and restore quickly, also bodies that electrocuted so if they try to surpass them by molecular deployment wouldn't affect it.
    I must say that Atlas has no movement in his head, and has not enough camaras, it needs more camaras and different vision kinds, like Xray and infrared vision capabilities.

      Curixq Yea, because humans have great balance. Robots are about as graceful as a toaster being thrown out a window.

    • @Curixq
      @Curixq 9 років тому +1

      The robot probably has much more balance than any of us.
      Regardless it's easier to keep balance when the weight is high.
      For example take a large spoon and you'll see it's easy to balance it on its handle with the heavy spoon part up top.
      It is however hard to balance with the heavy side in the air.
      The robot with most of the mass up top can in the same way keep his balance with subtle and fine movements.
      They are not building a tower, they are building a moving robot.

  • @gigicaly

    I got couple questions if someone could please respond:
    First question is what motors are been used on the robot and are they commercially available?
    Second question is about the robot design and that is why stop at 2 arms why not 4? Was it decided that 2 are enough? Or it was to much of a bother to program 4 arms to not hit each other and work around one another?
    And last question is about the number of legs. Wouldn't a 3 legged robot be more stable and also offer a more stable platform for when heavy tools are been used? I understand the humanoid form benefits as been able to work in a human environment but a third leg in the back like a kangaroo tail shouldn't bother from this perspective.

    • @nickreel1208
      @nickreel1208 8 років тому

      2 arms is all you need. 4 arms requires more hydraulic pressure to move the joints and more computers to control, just not worth the few benefits.

    Now that you've decided to make Atlas more mobile and independent, I guess it's now a matter of seeking the ways of making it the most energy efficient. But you should still consider alternate energy sources to increase its independence. Perhaps solar energy could be a viable option... and any similarities with The Matrix's plot are just mere coincidences and should only be regarded as such...

      +Myles Anthony Delfin While Asimo might look more polished on the outside Boston Dynamics seem to have so much more going on under the hood. The way they design self correction in movement and dynamic adaptability is really impressive. Hell like 4-5 years ago, the video of them kicking their big dog robot and it self adjusting and then also adjusting to correct balance after slipping on ice like a natural creature is just amazing. The goal with Atlas is functional autonomy in real world situations whereas Asimo, while still very impressive, is more of a pre-programmed deal.

      Hydraulic-electric servos are incredibly fast, strong, and accurate. Used in jet engines, machine tools, industrial actuators, etc. Been around since the late '50s early '60s.
