Can you guys imagine how silly this video will be in 20 years from now? We know that today, for a robot to climb stairs, pick up objects and get out of a car are very hard activities motion/balance wise. But these are just things that we'll see as primitive in the future, as we see today, for instance, the major breakthrough of 512KB flash drives or the amazing design of Windows 95. Really cool! Looking forward to that future!
Guilherme Marques The progression of robots is much, much slower than the progression of computers.
SchneiderMan But the progression is exponential, and not linear. It might seem slow now, but it's getting faster as time goes on.
Guilherme Marques it's got all to do with funding. Where the money goes that's where we get a boom in tech. Just look at phones.
Guilherme Marques In 2017 those things already look like childrens toys. Atlas 2017 can now make a backflip all because it got funded. The future is knocking man...
This looked just as silly 20 years ago as well.
Imagine how silly this will look in 50 years. "That robot just opened a door? WOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!"
Seriously
lol Imagine how few of us they will need in 50 years time #conspiracy haha
uhh yeah imagine what they were saying when we landed on the moon in 69....
main difference between then and now is people are a lot stupider.
haha
About as silly as government trying to tax people as a means to solve climate change.
I can't wait for when I look back at this and laugh at how basic these tasks were but for now, I'm amazed
Crazy how far we've come even in just 5 years
I got excited when the robot climbed the last step. Just awesome.
TheVerge edited that part really well. The suspense.
I could have been watching in silence, still awesome.
AJ06 It was cool, but it was also hilarious, couldn't help thinking of the "potty train". ^_^
+ajtronic People always overlook the the easiest stuff like walking around as amazement. Should look up the paralyzed people videos who have to use robotic legs just to go like 50 feet. Moving laterally and balancing w/ 1 foot is a huge challenge for robots and still for people who don't practice it.
I love the sarcasm. Robots are a joke.
If i showed this to someone in the 1980's they would lose their fucking minds...
The future is going to be amazing... look where we are already..
roflcopterkklol If you showed someone this in the 1980's..they would be more interested in the time machine :P
inoffensive coddler Only if people are allowed to keep breeding like mindless animals for the next 50 years. over populated by 5 billion people at the moment and all that.
inoffensive coddler
He deleted all his comments so all i see is you talking with yourself :)
5:18 Me last Saturday night...
Hahah best joke
HAHAHAHAH💀💀💀💀
It warms my heart to see some Americans still works hard.
Why isn't this done every year? It'd be awesome to see the progress made each year...
*Robots in the Field*
Imagine how much effort has been put in to get these machines to make gestures that we would consider to be normal?
Each team is given and hour to complete a series of tasks, with the winner being the team that undertakes these tasks in the minimal amount of time. Many things can go haywire in this challenge. Many of the robots fell over trying to complete the tasks.
#Darpa #robotics
I get strangely excited by these videos. Really cool to imagine the enormous amount of work behind these robots.
Isn't it weird how they didn't mention military applications?, I reckon they've done a shifty, and they used the public to create robots for them then there going to upgrade them or advance their technologies to be used for the military.
OMG it wouldve been such an honor to be a part of that team!
Wow, it seems to be much fun to build a robot!
It *is* fun. You can get started with something inexpensive and simple, such as an arduino based wheeled robot with sonic sensors.
South Korea 🇰🇷 👍🏻
There is a focus on the comments on military options .
I think we are a multiple number of years away from that.
The competition was initiated after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear facility disaster .
Of course we will use “ high tech and robots “ in war . BUT THE OPPORTUNITY to use robots in “ search and rescue , recovery and repair “ is more likely now in 2024
this is the best iv seen u bet
It's cool to see so many people watching a robot competition, nice to know this is something people can be passionate about. I feel sad that the Koreans are probably going to make better stuff than Americans, but as long as we all see the benefits I'm fine with that.
And now, just 8 years later we have robots doing parkour... WOW!!
The narrator sounds like he'd ignore you by staring at his smartphone if you asked him a question
Das Video vermittelt folgendes: Ingenieure treffen sich im Lego Land und freuen sich aus Bausteinen eine Brücke zu bauen, wir sind doch ca. 20 Jahre weiter
*15 minutes to pick up a drill*
"Yeah!!!! Get some!!! Whoo"
Trillions of calculations are taking place every second to keep you alive
That's pretty bloody impressive after the door.
Anybody know where I can see the first place run? This video put me on a robot kick.
I think robots will be used as soldiers a lot more than as doctors and paramedics.
i am sure that in 5 year they will be doing the same course in 10 mins.
but what i find funny is that scientist are always so optimistic about technology and dont think who is gonna end using it.
20 or 30 years from now we could see super fast and strong robots dismantling protests
I thought of an awesome platform for you guys
I love the DARPA challenge! I hope my robot I'm making will compete one day :)
"Teams have spend years designing robots, that could aid in an emergency... And potentially do much more"
Killing people. His is talking about killing people isn't he?
+Rogier B yep he sure is
Rogier B And fighting other robots
gladiator bots who will turn against their masters like in spartacus or gladiator with russel crow bot
Seriously...
Sexbots.
Science is absolutely amazing!
Can we imagine if the current Atlas by BD show off its skills during the race😁
Tancke you my friend
so it begins.... were are you John Connor!!!!
Nice to see a positive report from this. So many twazzarks mocking the achievements seen here.
when the dapa test first was announced it sounded super impossible, now i watching a robot make it through
In 5 years from now one will be doing it smoothly, and in 10 ... well, I-Robot will not be fiction anymore.
Nyctophobia actually what am i saying, it will be 4 years max.
we are on the edge of tomorow
Korea's KAIST team won? Yay!
3:05 Ohh, they use KDE. I wonder what distro they use...
The new age is coming closer every day :)
The new age being ecocide and our kids laughing at you technouptopianists?
PLease share the video of finalist (Tartan Robotics) of DRC2015 if anyone has the link.
It'll only take us another 1K years until we can make a real life Chappie.
Atlas today 2021 has developt a lot.
Good to hear Gabe from The Office is doing voice over work.
now lets all go over to Boston dynamics and see that their robot can literally do it all in half the time
Where is Honda's robot Asimo ?
These robots are so cool!!
Gives me goosebumps
Please show me about the 1st place team!
I think the robots from Boston Dynamics would dance on the metal corpses of these DARPA "winners".
Did you find the DARPA Chief, Donald Anderson there?
Cole Byre He wasn't feeling very well so he went for a lie down but now he's missing and I'm quite worried.
He left a load of food under his bed. I hope he won't mind that I took it.
I find the robot sooo cute!!! XD It's not even alive.. but who knows in the future right?! :D
People cheer when a robot opens a door, and people are worried about Skynet becoming a thing lol
Bakkefication
About skynet, skynet is AI controlling the robots, if the military atm dont allow robots to choose if a human is threat and kill him or not I doubt they will make skynet and give total control over all robots to an AI that may have code glitches happening now and then.
Why do we need the robots? As I said at another video:
We need farming robots, after that the government must invest some money to get them and put them on the fields to work 24/7 with attached charging cable to them, the costs for food and vegetables will drop tremendously, after that at 2020 cars with autopilot to transport the food, so at the end you will have a very cheap food to buy. The government must also do the same when it comes to mining, producing electricity and water supply. A great deal of money must be invested in solar/wind energy so they can keep charging the robots.
Remove all private sector from these areas and the government will have enough resources to give away for free to their citizens, meaning that every unemployed citizen will actually get pension no matter what the age, thus he will be able to sustain himself without working.
The happyness level of the population will be off the charts because at this moment people feel like slaves when it comes to not having an option but work something which you do not prefer, almost against your will because you do not have choice, if you do not work you get thrown to the streets and die.
Very impressive. Its gonna be fun to look at these videos in 20 years. They will look so primitive.
how can I get a entry level job in robotics? ?
I didn't know Kid Rock was in to robotics.
Not enough white dudes with bad facial hair in Verge videos. Thanks for following the American team and not the winning South Korean one. Awesome job guys.
yeah when i found out the koreans won, i felt gypt
is there a reason the verge showed second place and not the robot that got first place? is it because it's Korean ?
2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals
very cool and nice
This is awesome!
Build a protecton "protect and serve"
I still watching in 2021
Those dang robots are takin our jobs!!!
we will be the scifi story really soon hahaha
What are the people at 3:28 doing?
Show de bola!
If thorium works as a small energy source then the trick will be the power plant as technology here but not the small super propulsion system for flying drones or flying robots one day.
I for one, welcome our robot overlords.
This challenge is too soon for the year, there are so many tasks that they want the robot to do.
Those tasks can only be achieved by years of perfecting every specific functionality and synchronize all of it together.
5:29 says the dude that is participating in a program for military/defense department. lol
very cool and nice💬
whats the point of this challenge?
Have a Robot that can Iron My clothes, Do my laundry, fold and pack my laundry, vacuum my house, Mow the lawn, trim the hedge and I'll be so satisfied because I'll have more free time to do what I'm doing now which is absolutely nothing.
skynet is not the problem we are a long time away from that but it's possible. the problem is the people you are working for want robots to use as a army that don't ask questions just do whatever you say no matter how tribal the orders are
What Is This Chappie 2015 Edition?
Where are is Hubo
Where was Boston Dynamics during this whole thing?
This should be the prelude to a Transformers movie, Show how Cybertron was created.
RIP these boys, there's a new flipping robot in town
Meanwhile atlas is doing backflips
Now also parcour
Just came from the most recent Boston Dynamics videos and in comparison, this video here looks like a joke lol
well, I guess it's not time to welcome our new robot overlords yet...
Yo i know that this isnt easy but why would it take 15 min to go upstairs when other robots can do backflip
".... My grandpa is more agile than this 'super expensive robot' ... " :P
you must not understand how complex and difficult it is to make a simple bipedal robot
"...I know".
but my grandpa was actually much more agile than this,
and "the complexity" of his body is much more complicated than this robot. :P
it's true, and i tell you the truth. :D
where can i find the funny looking robot at 5:27 ?
I wonder what atlas would do to this course
it would nail everything and do a victory dance at the end
We must not rely too much on killer robots, it would be dispoyalty and dishonor. Because robots don't have a soul, a heart and they don't know loyalty and honor. Winning wars requires human soldiers who have hearts, souls, and who know loyalty and honor !
A weapon, to surpass Metal Gear.
ts just so funny to see how primitive this robotics technology is compared to what we could have, lets say 50 years from now. I mean look at how slow some of these things react, and those big clunky computers on their backs don’t make it easier to maneuver either. It just makes their trip back down to Earth that much easier. We at least need to figure out human prosthetic’s, with things like muscle replication, and articulation, and as well as form first before we start skiping a step, and allowing a computer A.I to control what would essentially be a shell.
Once we get there, then the next step should be that much easier. We just need the A.I and the computing power small enough, and competent enough to helm that shell.
To some that may sound scary, but in all honesty it really isn’t. You starting getting scare of your own creation, then do you really think it won’t take over? Also, you created it in the first place, so why would you be scared of it, then we have another problem on our hands.
I saw a map of the course in a magazine
Can´t see the winner, *Team Kaist's* robot in the video... Oh well, anyway, USA, USA!
cool stuff
gps like a drone 4 legs that switch to 2 self stabilized
Why do all the people from The Verge mumble their words? Enunciate!
I like the humble non shouty approach. Sick of over confident twats shouting and feigning excitement about everything they are asked to read or present for.
+inoffensive coddler all subjective, as a typical brit I'm more used to a gentler/softer way to talk and communicate, (not that we are all like that of course, loads of loud twats over here too) i find the majority presenters on TV/ UA-cam give a obnoxious, loud and false sounding delivery. So from my point of view they do sound more like regular human beings.
+inoffensive coddler fair enough. But you know what I mean, often presenters are American and overly enthusiastic /fake.
This guy sound like one of the goth kids from south park.
¿porque todos los robots que crean son tan diferentes a los humanos?, yo creo que los músculos y el esqueleto humano es el modelo bípedo perfecto, y se alejan tanto de ese modelo
so the jetsons was nonfictional?
very cool
Don't worry about these things being mass produced in armies. The mechanics are there, slow and crude, but getting better. However, the battery power just isn't up to what is needed to make them portable. The same problem for electric cars. It's a batteries and power source problem. And a huge problem. Nobody's got the answer cheaply.
Unless they are used today in factories where full electrical power is always supplied. It seems that for cars and robots a long term portable power source is necessary to make them cost efficient. So instead of things like huge military armies of robots there will only be a few in use due to cost. And nothing bigger until this very serious long term, costly power source problem is resolved. Then watch out! I'm gonna buy 5 just to...well, that's my business. hehe XD
This makes me want to build a robot. Anyone else have the same motivation?
Figure out how your alive first
5:25
Boston Dynamics having their robot just skip along like it's no big deal. :D
It's a shame they won't tell anyone how their stuff works...
It's a guy in a suit
@@ophiolatreia93 And here I was, hoping they actually use gnomes in every joint of their robots. So close!
I believe a robot should be controlled by its user via a virtual reality suite.
