Then planted with the soil about 1/4" above the top of the seed in a small pot. The soil was a mix of 55% perlite, 35% coir and 10% worm castings. Lit with a multicolor LED panel, just a few inches from the top of the soil. The true leaves came out nice and dark and grew very fast; a little water was added daily. An interesting hack is to weigh the container daily, adding water with a Nalgene wash bottle A/R to maintain the same weight in the beginning. The soil with so much perlite is unlikely to get waterlogged regardless of the watering method, though. Many other methods undoubtedly work, but this worked the best of the methods I have seen.

I’ve had great success using a shot glass full of water, let your seeds soak for 24 to 48 hours and you should see them split by then or even a little root tail pop out. Then put a couple paper towels on a plate and dump the seeds and shot glass of water onto the paper towel. Cover it with another paper towel and mist it with a spray bottle just to the point where the towels are fully saturated but not a puddle of water in your plate. Set the plate on top of your refrigerator for as long as you’d like until your two roots are whatever length you prefer. I usually shoot for about an inch and a half or so but make sure those paper towels never dry out so check it a couple times a day and hit it with a few sprays of water if needed. Once your two roots are of size either throw them in a res plastic cup with your media or use some kind of root cube even rockwool cubes work and it’s off to the races

I have access to some seeds that are between 25-30 years old. No clue as to the cultivars but they should mostly be KY flower. Nice to see that old seed can still sprout!
I tried sprouting some 11-12yr old seeds this year. A few split and began to root, but not a single one grew into a seedling. Sad as they were the last of my Trinity seeds. I had much better results with 3yr old seeds from a 2019 Jack Herer outdoor grow. 90% success, and very few males.
If only my teachers were explaining the lessons like that instead of shouting rapidly... Love the video and the information in it and especially the mood. :)
Didn't realize that sprouting seed was hard. They've always just popped for me. I've done it different ways for the heck of it, and they always just grow.... get them wet, keep them wet, when they pop, put them in dirt. Sometimes I just put them in dirt and keep it wet. I get about 95% when I just use random seeds....100% when I use well crafted seeds.
@@Chris-hall9080 I guess I take my exposure to plants for granted. Just seems like common sense. We grew plants in grade school, and my mom always had gardens that I helped with. I thought everyone grew up knowing how to sprout seeds and grow plants. Cannabis seeds are no different than other seeds. Keep them moist but don't drown them....start in soil or out of soil...when they pop, then just cover them in a little soil. Easier than tying your shoes. This is the first year I used carefully bred and cultivated seeds. Easiest seeds ever! I got 100% germination, which is rare in nature. They are all growing like champions, in spite of me almost killing them with too much fertilizer. (replanted in fresh soil, watered them intensely for a few days. Lost all their leaves, but they bounced back. Now they're fat and happy trees.)
Germinating seeds was always a hurdle for me until a couple of years ago, I have no problem cloning, dialling my grows in but I have lost a few seeds over the years...
Man I just started and my very first seed popped out of the shell completely and was on its own, my buddy told me put it in a paper towel until after work. We got to it 4 hours later, got it in dirt and it's been going ever since. Then I tried to do 2 sweet peach and both died, now I have a 10gs he gave me(pressure, I know, I'm feeling it now 😂) and it's been 2 days and I think I see the slightest tail, but I'm nervous about it
1 thing I noticed, and I'm guessing it means the seed is alive, if I get close to it with an object it seems to jump away. I'm new to all of this so don't laugh too much 😂
some seeds found in ancient Egyption grave sites, rooms, sarcophagus, were still viable thousands of years later. they were kept dry. How cool would it be to grow ancient herb seeds? 'Hey man I got some stuff you never smoked '..'you sure I never tried it?' 'Yep.'
@@johnpenley I miss the pure strains in the 70's of Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, Columbian, Thai stick and Puna Butter from Hawaii. They might of not been 30% THC but the terpenes and other macro substances induced a smooth smoke and strong high.
Best way to germinate is to drop seeds in a half full cup of water theyll float on top of the water and in a few days tails will show and plant them ... the great Soma's way been doing that 20yrs 💯
I still have a High Times cultivation issue by Frank and Rosenthal from 1983. The pages are all yellowed. I"m 63 now and grow some killer shit with worm dirt and store bought soil, feeding it with pond water.
There’s so much BS in the industry. I’m with you. I feed them probably 2-3 times during flower. Oh, I reuse my soil too. Less is more. I always get asked how I get the flavor i do. I put all my effort into the drying/curing process
So I bought 420 Fast buds seeds and was amped for my first grow. Started all 5 and all 5 died. 2 never came up once they popped in water and were moved to solo cups. The other 3 sort of came up but died within 24 hours. Discouraged and back to the drawing board feeling a little defeated. Frustrated one day I joked with my wife and put 2 seeds from an old bag that nobody would grow and well... I intentionally did EVERYTHING wrong. Poked the holes in the soil with a wanky old paint brush covered in toxic paint, buried the seeds waaay too deep and totally saturated the soil leaving it waterlogged. I then took them and put them in a west facing window (I live in upstate NY where it is currently a snuggly 26°) and left them there with the freezing draft from the 100 year old window literally on the cups and walked away after giving them the finger. A few days later... GERMINMUTHAFAKINATION!!!! I give up.
Autoflowers can be a pain, if you're just starting go for some high quality outdoor strains Like Frisian dew, never had a seed fail. Even 3 year old ones pop without a Problem
So long as the root fibers don’t get torn by the weave of the paper towel…I brush the seed seams with sandpaper…add seeds to small cup… paper towel on top…I put them the dark…in a small sunglass box on the seedling heat pad…24-48 hours…

when you sprout them in a paper towel then you run the risk of damaging sprouts when you plant them. just put em in the soil and water em. Its not brain surgery
@@kellywinfrey4283 That argument makes very little sense. You can only know wheter it's a viable seed by germinating it anyway whether in paper or soil or any other media. The only benefit of the paper towel method is not "wasting" or possibly occupying media with a seed that you it's gonna sprout, but it's not a waste at all, cause if it doesnt germinate you can always reuse the media with new seed. If you have 10 spots for a seed and need to be sure to have 10 viable seeds you'll always run the risk of running into the same problem with the paper towel. Are you gonna germinate only 10 seeds and run the risk of only getting 9 or less? Are you gonna compensate by germinating more than you need and run the risk of having excess (very costly) seedlings you cannot use, seedlings which btw are much more costly than the media you're trying to spare? It makes very little sense. Theres absolutely no reason to use the paper towel. Only disadvantages, from mold, to damaging and losing what was once a viable seed, early malformation of the seedling, plus you have to watch it like a hawk to ensure it doesnt estiolate beyond repair, which can happen in just a matter of hours while you're away at work for example. People recommending germinating in paper towels cannot call themselves experts, like the owners of this channel claim to be. Sorry for being so negative, but they have deleted 2 of my comments criticizing this method. Dont trust people who cant handle criticism and want their monetized videos' comment sections to be a fake sea of roses.
I have found cannabis seeds to be very aggressive growers. My seeds germinated within two days. It's best to get them in the ground as soon as that tap root gets to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch. It's harder getting them in the hole if the root is too long and it risks not getting the soil in around the root. roots grow DOWN , reguardless of direction the seed is planted. I have never had to plant any seed root side down unless it's an actual plant. I think next time, I am just throwing the seeds in the cup. You shouldn't have to have water floating like that eather. A damp paper towel in a warm dark area works just fine. Generally, it's the small plant that is more susceptible to damage ,not the seed.
I have a glass cigar tube full of seeds, these seeds came from “Mexican” weed back in the early 70’s, back when a kilo (2.2#) cost $125. These seeds have traveled all over the USA and guess I’ll attempt to germinate a few. Will be really interesting to discover the quality of the bloom if they grow. Any predictions if they grow?
Light does not affect the germination of cannabis. The size of the seed tells the tale. As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the seed, the more likely it needs light to germinate.
If soaking then starting in my starting peat-based media, using my microscope, can I tell where on the seed the radicle will emerge? So that I can plant that end down from the start.
I never had good luck with the napkin and Seed I always tend to break the Tap Root I like to put my seeds in water preferably spring water for 14 to 18 hours after that I place the seed and soil should pop in the next two to three days I like to start in a Solo cups
This is the way, soak for a couple hours and straight into moist soil. 100% success rate on 80+ seeds from different breeders so far, no risk of breaking a tap root and damaging the embryo. Paper towel tek is super outdated in my opinion, not sure why its being pushed as the standard when most big growers are starting to move away from it and direct sow in small pots?
Im going to start my own grow soon, but am going to use cloth pots with self watering globes, using old aquarium water cant get much more organic than that. The globes only allow water to run out as needed.
The first publication about growing cannabis, in English, published in the USA since the passage of the Tax Stamp Act was; Maryjane Superweed's, "The Complete Cannabis Cultivator," published in 1969. The next was Bill Drake's "The Cultivator's Handbook of Marijuana," published in 1970.
Those are totally not consistent. They work but sometimes there is poorly made ones (pretty common). Grodan Rockwool is best to make large scale... i beat people in clone number competitions who claim jiffy every time, in every state i bet.
With more respect than is due. Seeds should be planted, pointy end up, as soon as the white of the radicle is visible. In half a dozen single-variable tests, using statistically-significant sample populations, both crops germinated using the legume method, the plants planted earlier averaged 5-10% higher yields and stronger stems.
@@stevesalkas9128 Me neither, full sun!!?? Nope, a somewhat warm dark place between moist paper towels seems to work best for cannabis. All plant species seem to like different methods, some are forgiving, some are more difficult...

Some of the bowls seemed to have too much water. I'm betting there's a reason for that per being under the studio lights? Anyway, I pour off the excess water so the seeds basically don't drown.
No, because it maintains the moisture at the top where the seeds are at.. so it doesnt dry out. You put them on a heat pad also, to germinate faster usually, or (like me on top of a cabletv box that is always warm)
20 year old seeds?! And he let em stretch like that?? He must have all kinds of old genetics to not mind what happens to these. I find it fascinating his successful germination rate with such old seeds. Now I want to know. How did he store these seeds over that long?

New subscriber, i hit notifications as well. How can i findnthe video on picking the best seeds? My last 2 years my females got polinated and seeded out and now I have a ton of Blueberry Bubblegum seeds.
I planted mine in a plant starter kit with 16 cups in it. I've put them in a rubber made box with my grow light made in the lid. I have a heat pad underneath it and I have the light set to blue and heat pad set on low. I've got 4 plants growing in it, but I've lost 1 of them already and I think I'm about to lose another one that's why I'm contacting you. The one that's trying to die on my is drooping over. I water them every day with water bought from the store in bottles. I don't want to lose anymore, so please help me if you don't care?
A friend sent me some seeds and suggested that I carefully scrape them before putting into wet towels. The seeds are so tiny that I can’t seem to handle them gently enough. Do I actually need to file them first? Thanks guys 🖖👀
Scuffing the shell up can help the water penetrate, especially on older seeds. Some people put them in a match box with bit of sandpaper and shake fairly gently.
I never understood why people would want to baby week genetics. Plant a seed into soil, water once and wait. If a seed doesn’t want to sprout in soil then you probably won’t want to grow that pheno.
Not necessarily. You can fabricate a better environment for an individual plant, specifying for desired terps and effects whereas, the earth and the environment is the earth and really isn't specified for a specific organism at all. Because laws forced weed to be cultivated underground, the weed got stronger. We humans naturally selected the better strains with our favorite effects and we have more potent weed today. But I know what you're saying. A stadium of lights is probably not the best way to grow food or weed.
I agree but on really large scale...in all areas, totally not possible. Also, it is about clean consistency which soil is random depending on each scoop. Good soil often has to be shipped in also, not everyone has that around their environment.
If you're growing 5 plants, that's a perfect way to germinate seeds. Now if you're growing 500 plants, the germination failure rates are going to add up. You want to make sure you aren't putting lights over an empty bucket of soil, wasting time, space and money by germinating your seeds before putting them in soil. I copy and pasted this from one of my own comments.
I too go directly to soil as well after all these years of growing my own I can only remember one failure in the last 6 or 8 years so not a big enough problem to worry about. And yes why mess with this for 3 days or so when you could be already growing!
Pre soak in a 50/50 hydrogen/rain water for 18 hours. Remove and put in a solo cup full of a seedling medium and keep dark for another 24 hours until germination
I’ve got tons of seeds have no clue what kind but I can’t get ANY to sprout. Tried the 48 hr paper towel method in a dark spot. What am I doing wrong? This doesn’t make sense. I’ve grown a number of edible herbs from seed including cantaloupe. Please advise.
Try this...Spray lightly inside bag,not too wet like its your main water supply, paper towel, get it wet then squeeze out excess water, you might have dry spots..not to worry, then put seeds on towel then spray one quick stroke..fold told again spray one quick stroke...put inside bag,I would use like 4 sheets of papertowels..not too thick, not too thin,i usually go 3 sheets about 5 inches wide,,then put something on top of the bag like a towel and press just a little..and wait 2 days.
на этом видео походу семена очень хорошей всхожести, лично мне попадались семки которые просто на ватных дисках не очень прорастают пока в грунт не попадут движухи нет
You lost me at the paper towel growmie..I scuff my seeds and then float them on water until there is a 1" taproot. Its works alot better than the paper towel method..my germination rate is almost 100%. I have a video on scuffing in my channel. It works especially well on old seeds.

@@WisconsinEric Same here, I had some super old SKUNK seeds, but they never grew. And their genetics are probably all gone by now...

Germination is always the fun part.
For old seeds try 3 per cent peroxide 10 mls in 1/2 cup water let them just soak till they sink possible about 24 hrs then into this method may help
I know plenty of people who kill every plant they touch… cannabis seedlings are already quite fragile so I’d understand the struggle for new growers.
I'm new to all of this so don't laugh too much 😂
That was great info. 20 yr old seeds blew my mind though. I never knew they would be viable for that long. AWESOME!!!
some seeds found in ancient Egyption grave sites, rooms, sarcophagus, were still viable thousands of years later. they were kept dry. How cool would it be to grow ancient herb seeds? 'Hey man I got some stuff you never smoked '..'you sure I never tried it?' 'Yep.'
Land race African strains in particular have long term viability. Storing them properly greatly extends that trait.

@@jadeblanco2896 I've rehab'd last years soil with organic amendments and Boogie Brew this year.
Don't want to try and pop them in water, it will kill them fast.
He germinated seeds in a refrigerator... autos are trash
I have found random bag seeds to be the easiest to grow, however the quality is not always there. They do yield alot usually though.
Were they by a heater in anyway? Heated floors?
So long as the root fibers don’t get torn by the weave of the paper towel…I brush the seed seams with sandpaper…add seeds to small cup… paper towel on top…I put them the dark…in a small sunglass box on the seedling heat pad…24-48 hours…
Thank you for Mel

when you sprout them in a paper towel then you run the risk of damaging sprouts when you plant them. just put em in the soil and water em. Its not brain surgery
Yup you know more than the pros
The reason to germinate in paper towels is to make sure you have viable seeds, because not all the seeds sprout every time.
@@kellywinfrey4283 That argument makes very little sense. You can only know wheter it's a viable seed by germinating it anyway whether in paper or soil or any other media.
The only benefit of the paper towel method is not "wasting" or possibly occupying media with a seed that you it's gonna sprout,
but it's not a waste at all, cause if it doesnt germinate you can always reuse the media with new seed.
Only disadvantages, from mold, to damaging and losing what was once a viable seed,
early malformation of the seedling, plus you have to watch it like a hawk to ensure it doesnt estiolate beyond repair, which can happen in just a matter of hours while you're away at work for example.
People recommending germinating in paper towels cannot call themselves experts, like the owners of this channel claim to be.
Sorry for being so negative, but they have deleted 2 of my comments criticizing this method.
Dont trust people who cant handle criticism and want their monetized videos' comment sections to be a fake sea of roses.
great video thanks!
Thank you for the vid. Very helpful.
I've had two grow up.
3 days is a charm......never go wrong any strain 3 days!!
beautiful photos!
They probably will float them in some clean water tap is fine add a tiny splash of hydrogen peroxide

It's called hemp. You sound like a shit cop from canada?
Light does not affect the germination of cannabis. The size of the seed tells the tale. As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the seed, the more likely it needs light to germinate.
been using paper towel for years and it works just fine
@@ottoflouer1750 I agree. I usually just soak'em like overnight then plant. How deep do you usually plant?

With more respect than is due. Seeds should be planted, pointy end up, as soon as the white of the radicle is visible. In half a dozen single-variable tests, using statistically-significant sample populations, both crops germinated using the legume method, the plants planted earlier averaged 5-10% higher yields and stronger stems.

Some of the bowls seemed to have too much water. I'm betting there's a reason for that per being under the studio lights? Anyway, I pour off the excess water so the seeds basically don't drown.
That's a lot of water in those containers. At that point the paper towel is useless since the seeds are just floating in the water
No, because it maintains the moisture at the top where the seeds are at.. so it doesnt dry out. You put them on a heat pad also, to germinate faster usually, or (like me on top of a cabletv box that is always warm)

They look just like people I smoked dope with in 7th grade. We would crack the window in shop class and do bongs. 1978.
I never understood why people would want to baby week genetics. Plant a seed into soil, water once and wait. If a seed doesn’t want to sprout in soil then you probably won’t want to grow that pheno.

Isnt't it the best to put the seeds directly in the earth?

The best for you.🍄💊💊🌿🌿
100%
Not necessarily. You can fabricate a better environment for an individual plant, specifying for desired terps and effects whereas, the earth and the environment is the earth and really isn't specified for a specific organism at all. Because laws forced weed to be cultivated underground, the weed got stronger. We humans naturally selected the better strains with our favorite effects and we have more potent weed today.
But I know what you're saying. A stadium of lights is probably not the best way to grow food or weed.
Directly into organic soil is my preference. No point in all that extra work
I agree but on really large scale...in all areas, totally not possible.
