One way I saw that worked very well was to put a moist folded paper towel in a ziplock on its side that was not closed to allow air circulation. Seeds were removed as soon as roots shown so as not to risk tiny roots working their way through the paper towel layers and possibly rotting of the tender root. Then planted with the soil about 1/4" above the top of the seed in a small pot. The soil was a mix of 55% perlite, 35% coir and 10% worm castings. Lit with a multicolor LED panel, just a few inches from the top of the soil. The true leaves came out nice and dark and grew very fast; a little water was added daily. An interesting hack is to weigh the container daily, adding water with a Nalgene wash bottle A/R to maintain the same weight in the beginning. The soil with so much perlite is unlikely to get waterlogged regardless of the watering method, though. Many other methods undoubtedly work, but this worked the best of the methods I have seen.

i used to do the paper towel method. these days i just put them in the soil. more detail on that: i use a grow tent, cloth pots, and ocean forest soil, i hydrate and hand mix the soil before planting the seed, i use distilled water for about the first week then switch to ph balanced water.
after the soil is hydrated and the seed planted about half an inch down and lightly covered, i spray it down with more distilled water then cover it with a zippered sandwich bag, zipper left open and sprayed inside with water mist to keep the humidity over the seed while it germinates. once you see the seedling poking out you can remove the baggie. works great for me.
for newbies dont add nutrients to ocean forest soil. its fine out of the bag. you wont need nutrients for the first month just ph balanced water. after that appropriate nutrients, calmag, etc.. of your choice in appropriate amounts.

I start right in the soil too. The less you can mess with the roots the better. I use small disposable cloth pots to start them before transplanting to final pots. That way if one doesn't pop you can just put another in it's place and continue on.

I’ve had great success using a shot glass full of water, let your seeds soak for 24 to 48 hours and you should see them split by then or even a little root tail pop out. Then put a couple paper towels on a plate and dump the seeds and shot glass of water onto the paper towel. Cover it with another paper towel and mist it with a spray bottle just to the point where the towels are fully saturated but not a puddle of water in your plate. Set the plate on top of your refrigerator for as long as you’d like until your two roots are whatever length you prefer. I usually shoot for about an inch and a half or so but make sure those paper towels never dry out so check it a couple times a day and hit it with a few sprays of water if needed. Once your two roots are of size either throw them in a res plastic cup with your media or use some kind of root cube even rockwool cubes work and it’s off to the races

all that I do is take half a sheet of paper towel, fold it in half then roll it around my fingers then put it into a 250ml mason jar. pour about 1oz of bottled water into it and then place seeds around the perimeter about half way down the jar. you can label then on the outside of the jar if you have more than one stain. i put the lid on loose and stick in a cupboard. typically they sprout in 1-2days. I have been doing this for years and this method seems to work every time if the seed is viable.

That's what I'm using this year! I moistened one put the seed down and moistened the top one in a dish. Plastic wrap over the top. Wait 3 days and hopefully voila. I wasted a seed with the paper towel system. partially my fault in that I must have gotten the paper towel too wet. From here I'll use the double beer cup method. Bottom cup will have three small stones and the top cup will have holes drilled. Germination media will be FF White Warrior with a little FF Ocean Forest. This is a Barney's Farm Kush Mintz which came out great last year. Next will exclusively be Humboldt Seed Company's offerings.

@@Chris-hall9080 I guess I take my exposure to plants for granted. Just seems like common sense. We grew plants in grade school, and my mom always had gardens that I helped with. I thought everyone grew up knowing how to sprout seeds and grow plants. Cannabis seeds are no different than other seeds. Keep them moist but don't drown them....start in soil or out of soil...when they pop, then just cover them in a little soil. Easier than tying your shoes.
This is the first year I used carefully bred and cultivated seeds. Easiest seeds ever! I got 100% germination, which is rare in nature. They are all growing like champions, in spite of me almost killing them with too much fertilizer. (replanted in fresh soil, watered them intensely for a few days. Lost all their leaves, but they bounced back. Now they're fat and happy trees.)

The other 3 sort of came up but died within 24 hours. Discouraged and back to the drawing board feeling a little defeated. Frustrated one day I joked with my wife and put 2 seeds from an old bag that nobody would grow and well... I intentionally did EVERYTHING wrong. Poked the holes in the soil with a wanky old paint brush covered in toxic paint, buried the seeds waaay too deep and totally saturated the soil leaving it waterlogged. I then took them and put them in a west facing window (I live in upstate NY where it is currently a snuggly 26°) and left them there with the freezing draft from the 100 year old window literally on the cups and walked away after giving them the finger. The reason to germinate in paper towels is to make sure you have viable seeds, because not all the seeds sprout every time.

    • @virusmyth4930
      @virusmyth4930 Місяць тому

@@kellywinfrey4283 That argument makes very little sense. You can only know wheter it's a viable seed by germinating it anyway whether in paper or soil or any other media.
The only benefit of the paper towel method is not "wasting" or possibly occupying media with a seed that you it's gonna sprout,
but it's not a waste at all, cause if it doesnt germinate you can always reuse the media with new seed.
If you have 10 spots for a seed and need to be sure to have 10 viable seeds you'll always run the risk of running into the same problem with the paper towel. Are you gonna germinate only 10 seeds and run the risk of only getting 9 or less? Are you gonna compensate by germinating more than you need and run the risk of having excess (very costly) seedlings you cannot use, seedlings which btw are much more costly than the media you're trying to spare?
      It makes very little sense.
Theres absolutely no reason to use the paper towel. Only disadvantages, from mold, to damaging and losing what was once a viable seed,
early malformation of the seedling, plus you have to watch it like a hawk to ensure it doesnt estiolate beyond repair, which can happen in just a matter of hours while you're away at work for example.
People recommending germinating in paper towels cannot call themselves experts, like the owners of this channel claim to be.
Sorry for being so negative, but they have deleted 2 of my comments criticizing this method.
Dont trust people who cant handle criticism and want their monetized videos' comment sections to be a fake sea of roses.

I have found cannabis seeds to be very aggressive growers. My seeds germinated within two days. It's best to get them in the ground as soon as that tap root gets to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch. It's harder getting them in the hole if the root is too long and it risks not getting the soil in around the root. roots grow DOWN , reguardless of direction the seed is planted. I have never had to plant any seed root side down unless it's an actual plant. I think next time, I am just throwing the seeds in the cup. You shouldn't have to have water floating like that eather. A damp paper towel in a warm dark area works just fine. Generally, it's the small plant that is more susceptible to damage ,not the seed.

Paper towel tek is super outdated in my opinion, not sure why its being pushed as the standard when most big growers are starting to move away from it and direct sow in small pots?

Not necessarily. You can fabricate a better environment for an individual plant, specifying for desired terps and effects whereas, the earth and the environment is the earth and really isn't specified for a specific organism at all. Because laws forced weed to be cultivated underground, the weed got stronger. We humans naturally selected the better strains with our favorite effects and we have more potent weed today.
But I know what you're saying. A stadium of lights is probably not the best way to grow food or weed.

If you're growing 5 plants, that's a perfect way to germinate seeds. Now if you're growing 500 plants, the germination failure rates are going to add up. You want to make sure you aren't putting lights over an empty bucket of soil, wasting time, space and money by germinating your seeds before putting them in soil.
I copy and pasted this from one of my own comments.
