In today's video, Shaun Webb and Mike Granato show you the exact downswing sequence you need for more distance and consistency. Many golfers start their downswings on the wrong foot (literally). That not only robs you of speed but makes moving the club properly nearly impossible. Instead, incorporate this downswing sequence into your swing and enjoy the results.
Here's the link to Justin Rose's video explaining what he's trying to feel and do during the downswing: www.instagram....

My golf instructor suggested that I watch your videos. You two have some very simple, yet logical ideas. Thanks for the help.
Joe
@@joedoyle7389 thank you!!! Tell him we said thanks for the recommendation
I can’t tell you how happy I am that I found your pro vs am series. I’ve played golf for nearly 20 years and have been so frustrated with my swing for the last 5 years or so. I was at the range today and finally felt exactly what you’re talking about in this video. Felt amazing. I feel like I found my swing with this lesson today.
Awesome, Jeff! Glad to hear they're helping👊
One of the best explanations I've seen on this subject
Thanks for checking it out, Ryan👊
Thanks both. Subtle is the key word here. I think so many amateurs hear this (great) advice and then totally over do it. It really is just a subtle move back to the centre (matter of inches), but the difference is HUGE. Love the channel.
you are absolutely right - all adjustments in a golf swing should basically be subtle but it is especially true with this type of movement
the slight sway and lea prior to downswing added 5-7mph and i feel more in balance . im no longer frozen in the take away either.
thank you
This move back to the target with the weight before (and sometimes well before) the top of the back swing is counter intuitive to sequence so I developed a little drill I called 'spreading the butter' which gives you a great feeling for the move. You don't need a club, just get in posture but stretch your right hand out in front of you then start making lateral movements with your arm. Imagine you are spreading butter on a window in front of you with the back of your hand going right and the palm going left. Then start to synchronise lateral hip motion, first in the same directions as your arm then do them in opposite directions. This gives a great feeling of what it should feel like in the swing.
most crystal clear instructions on the web 10 stars...
thank you!
OMG I just tried this move on Sunday, wow what difference, first time I broke 90 for years! I got it wrong a few times (I found myself sliding forward in the backswing and a bit reverse pivoting) but when I got the timing right I felt the contact was much more solid than before.
I never really got the hip "bump" transition that some instructional videos mention at the start of the downswing (it just makes me swing outside the the plane)
great video guys, thanks a lot
Great job!
I really feel your method of explanations is GREAT !!
If I may make a suggestion it would be sooo beneficial to see an actual pro making the correct swing to the lesson you are addressing as an additional visualization of the swing as you so expertly show with your computerized models !!!!
Sorry for being to wordy !
Another great video. When the torso is raising and the head is lowering through impact, is that because the butt is moving away from the ball i.e. anti-goat humping?
I never knew the re-centering and weight shift back to the left side happened in the back swing until I watched this video. I worked on this extensively at home and took it to the range today. It was a game changing movement that created consistent ball striking I’ve never really had before. Thank you so much.
Hi, thanks for the video this is great. I play to scratch, but my problem is my left arm doesn’t drop down, it stays tight to my chest as I unwind. Are there any exercises, drills or feelings I could add to my practice? Many thanks for the great videos.
Here's my 2-bobs worth. Its about sequencing. The sequence does not change. What triggers the downward swing also depends on body type. Guys/gals with stronger upper or lower body will trigger the downswing differently. But however they do it - the sequencing has to be in sync to deliver the club face to the ball square
There are always exception to the rule where someone simply has so much athletic abilities that their initial sequence might be out but they usually get the club face square.
Please address how the pelvis and the hips (femurs) move in opposite directions during both the back and down swing?
I’ve heard some instructors describe this dipping motion as the “trampoline” effect. Apparently it’s meant to build momentum. Thoughts??
There's VERY little momentum from the dip. Just using the pro in this video for example, his dip from the top is only .17" with the ribcage and doesn't have any dip with his hips. The momentum comes from the lift/rising of the body, not the dipping.
The take away of course start the downswing
Good points Gentlemen. I was guilty of watching Pro golfers drop down in their downswing, only to later realize (after playing with and video taping a Pro) that their head actually tilts face down as their left shoulder drives up. I was told it was their way of maintaining their Spine Angle into impact. What are your thoughts?..
Right on. You fellas are the best.
🙏👊
So when does john Daley start his down swing ?
without high tech equipment what do suggest we amateurs do to utilize this great info to our benefit? I feel like if I tried this I would hit a foot behind the ball (vs hitting only 6" behind ball now) 🤣
Good
I think the FEELING of keeping my bak to the target "longer" helps me do all of this without having to think about too many check points.
the Justin Rose move gives me the same feeling, but timing seems better with the back-to-target thought. Keep up the good work guys. Love these videos.
Maybe I am 100% wrong but doesn’t proper footwork get you into that position? It seems to me that when my left knee bends and my right (trail) leg straightens, I can feel a bit of weight shift into my left foot without thinking about it. Also when the left knee bends and the right straightens the club will move away from the ball without any manipulation by my hands which keeps the club in front of my body, which I think is a good move away from the ball. Am I thinking about this in the right way? Correct me if I am wrong!
We teach A LOT of golfers to improve their knee movements for that very reason! Great way of thinking about it 🙌👊
On the backswing of the takeaway is it wrong to have the shat vertical at the top (which makes it feel lighter) as opposed to laying off?
You don't really want the shaft vertical in the backswing
What do most professionals think? Hit the ball or think swing with the ball just in the path of the swing of the club head. I am speculating that just thinking of smooth swing has more speed.
An aggressive swing at the ball.
The golf swing feels to me like this: the left knee hip and shoulder come under on the backswing, then I center in the downswing with pressure equalizing in my feet then the right knee hip and shoulder go under through impact. Feels more like a teeter totter than a "turn back". More tilting than turning but I know I'm turning. Feel isn't real. Lol
Butch Harmon says that continued lowering Of the head is take care of by increasing pelvic rotation. Am I in the running for “ comment of the week” ? Lots of thumbs up people.
👊💣
You would have been for sure, but there has already been a winner for this one😊
Love it
A golf swing is so similar to the swing of a Trebuchet catapult.
The glutes.
Eureka moment. You described my swing perfectly. Swing back stop weight shift on way down. Changed my game after weight shift around parallel on the way back. Subscribed immediately 👍
Awesome, Steve, so glad it helped! Thanks for the sub👊
Steve Bell
Winner of a video, I been trying to find out about "hank Haney golf lessons youtube" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is a smashing one-off product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method without the normal expense. I've heard some incredible things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
This channel is by far the best at utilizing technology to communicate feel. Most others either use tech to merely show positions, or show disdain for tech entirely, and try to communicate feel with vague language. AMG is in a class by itself.
Appreciate you 🙏
Thanks for the video content! Apologies for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (google it)? It is a good one of a kind product for revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
With regards to this video I am wondering about the head dropping while the pelvis and torso going up. Since the torso and head are (hopefully) connected and generally move in the same vertical direction, does this entail a head tilt or other neck movement of sorts?
I like that this channel isn't all about drills. The 3D golfer in slow motion is really helpful to see what the body should be doing and in the end I find it more helpful (at least as far as youtube goes) than drills that may or may not be the right fix for me. Drills help, but there are so many and knowing the right ones to take the driving range can be difficult, and I'd bet most are watching several different instructors on youtube, so that complicates matters more.
Totally agree with you mate. Seeing a video like this and others on this channel with the 3D model swings of successful pros and explaining it is better than watching lots of random golf instruction videos on UA-cam. Sometimes our brains need to see the proof to understand - learn the philosophy of a successful swing before we physically rehearse and practice.
Great vid as ever. I think it’s something to do with having a stationary target which makes us think we need to keep everything as still as possible. Added to that nobody wants to miss the ball in practice, so even on the range we’re not practicing more dynamic actions for fear of looking stupid. If you were swinging at a baseball you’d accept you’ll miss some and swing freer.
I think there's a lot to what you said, Anthony. We actually had golfers hit moving balls from their normal setup... the moves they make when in "reaction" mode is really good.
Does this apply to the driver? Having some issues correctly shifting weight for the driver. I was always taught for the driver to delay the weight shift and keeping my head behind the ball at impact
Yes it does. Keep in mind, the head is already behind the ball with the driver😉
Hi! So what part of the body start first it's the pelvis or hands?
pelvis first but very close together
Any chance of doing a video analysis of Henrik Stenson’s swing? Love how he loads his trail side so he can drift to the target earlier in his swing.
instagram.com/p/BrISV2BlOq0/
hi guys does left knee after the recentering start the downswing or is that OLD SCHOOL THINKIG and bad information tks
I would like to rework my swing because I am casting my club which you talk about. I don’t want to hit it 300 anymore just swing consistently.
Good vid from these guys who always have something interesting to say ... but I must point out the spelling error ("seperate" instead of "separate") at 0:48 in the graphic. I know 99% percent of viewers won't care, but if it's easily fixable I'd do it if it were my professional video. Hey, and thanks for the great bonus link to the Justin Rose vid.
Glad you enjoyed it, Joe👍
I just can't seem to get the lower body to start the downswing before my arms get to the top of the back swing... Can you look at my swing in my profile?
Hi guys, where should the hands be in relationship to the club on a down the line view? Inside or outside or none of the above. What’s the best drill to correct this parasite
What about players who can smash the ball dead straight after pausing at the top???
We also call it the bidirectionnal mouvment.
Love it
Where have you guys been, missed you, don’t do it again?! 😁
We sure missed being around! We've been on the road with the guys to finish the 2018 season and then to start the 2019 season. But we've also been filming hours of new content for the channel with some stuff we've never shown before. If we had to be MIA, we wanted to make it for a good reason😉
But it's good to be back!
I disagree with what the initial lateral movement is. It’s not a shift IMO.
It’s a stretch of the left leg externally with the lead pelvis low, which will move you laterally a little bit. Not any kind of push off the back foot or bumping of the hips: it sure does look like it.
Then all you do is get he right elbow externally in front of your body a little with some separation of the upper and lower body.
All of a sudden you’re shallowed out like crazy as long you’re not pulling on the handle.
Then it’s just a rotation to impact and not an arm swing.
Gets me super open at impact!
👌🏻
Texas Golfer how much lateral movement of the body would you like to see from top of backswing to impact?
Shaun Webb Golf I suppose it depends on whether you’re centered or if you come off the ball in the backswing.
But definitely some lateral movement while the right arm starts going external.
Texas Golfer how much from “zero” let’s say. ? Curious to hear your thoughts.
Shaun Webb Golf Not sure the number but quite a bit. It feels like a fall laterally to me, not a Drive off the back foot. I just let the stretch and small external movement of the left leg to initiate the fall, it doesn’t take much.
Texas Golfer wait so I’m confused. You say you disagree that there is no shift, but there is “quite a bit “ of lateral movement? Just trying to understand what you’re saying. Also, how long have you been teaching golf? Always nice to have discussions with fellow instructors.
This video was not sponsored by Hideki Matsuyama !
He's actually a good example of a really good of what's in this video. Here's him and the other top 9 in the world doing it: instagram.com/p/Bgozuoeh0Cf/?taken-by=athletic_motion_golf
The 3D model looks like JR himself! The head dipping is happening because it sits in the middle of the he tilting of the hips and shoulders. The dipping of the head will follow on both ends of the swing according to hip and shoulder tilts on either end. Think of how the the bars of someone swinging on the uneven bars dips in gynastics everytime the gymnast swings on them. To maximize this, have more flexed lead wrist with a steep shoulder turn i.e., Dustin Johnson., and the body will be more inclined to work downward therefore creating a bigger dip of the head in transition of the downing... cheers.
Look how that club shallows out in the swing. Like a mini loop.
Good eye, Pinoy👊
Athletic Motion Golf yeah my coach and I are following your work and we are working on shallowing out my golf swing more to help me clear my hips easier.
How can I take the driving range to the course. I quest I put to much pressure on myself, 90% of time I throw a second ball down after the miss I am almost always on target. Can you give me something I can do to be more consistent on the course,
Put way more pressure on yourself at the range... consequences. Create scenarios that have very specific pass/fail outcomes.
Not true fellows the Hands-and Arms start the downswing with the body shift
Theres actually a golf channel promoting that squatting stuff lol
I try to start my move to re-center when I feel my hands farthest from the target. Is this on the right track?
As always great video and great discussion regarding what's " actually" happening in the swing. I know you guys have some special equipment and software to assist you in your analysis, do you have any way of demonstrating, measuring, or any insight on some subtleties of grip, palm or finger pressure amongst the pros vs ametuers?.
Not really, unfortunately. We have some "guesses" but nothing that can actually be measured. I did see something posted months back about an instrumented grip from a university lab, but that seems quite a ways off to become something practical to use in lessons.
Hi guys this is some phenomenal instruction. I have seen some video of Rory at the players recently. Interestingly it looks as though his weight is shifting prior to the club moving at all in the back swing, so you will need to change your perimeters for shifting weight in future videos given that he won!! Many 🙏
Haha he's actually a great example of why that shift should happen early (Stenson too). We see that same shift in ams with the only difference being it happens around the top of the swing. Rory is already back to centered by that point.
Good concept. but- what's the trigger to make this happen ?
I do agree that the swing should be fluid and in constant movement until completion but Hideki Matsuyama sure looks like he completely stops, and then starts his downswing.
We were taking bets on how long it would take for someone to mention him, lol. His club is very quiet at the top, but he is shifting his body during that quiet time.
My question is: ... Why do i need a shift to the left? I mean, somethings are just happens. Most instructors tell to shift weight und pressure, but i cannot explain or tell a 3rd person why? What is the benefit?
A few of the measurable benefits are: moves low point forward, improves center impact, increases compression, improves distance, allows you to cover the ball, improves dynamic loft, helps to shallow the club, improves downswing rotation
What do you mean by "shift to the left"? On the downswing, I'm assuming if you're right-handed? Are you left-handed?
Great tip. This really just dawned on me recently after watching videos like this. I'm working hard on trying to start my body's downswing earlier now.
Well worth the effort👊
Way too confusing
My right side collapses at impact. I start my downswing by turning my left hip. Would you advise to turn my torso and hips together, by turning my belly button to the target ?
Very difficult to say what's causing that right side collapse without being able to see what's happening earlier in the swing. Turning the left hip by itself won't cause the collapse so something else is going on in there.
when I;m swinging well it feels like when your using a Big ol bull whip before the tip of the whip reaches its max extension the hand has already started moving in the other direction, so the club head is the tip of my whip and my foot movement is the ( hands ) , great video guys.
I love your description of the “concept.” Too many videos talk about little things and neglect to show the big picture.
We're firm believers in building around sound concepts... makes the work more impactful.
Appreciate Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you ever tried - Yanaylee Yanrooklyn Magic (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one off guide for unlocking an effective golf swing technique minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got amazing results with it.
I agree that there can be multiple things happening at the same. Not only is weight being shifted before the downswing starts but there’s also rotation starting as well. It’s like patting your head with one hand and rubbing your tummy with the other. Geez, it’s no wonder I have trouble chewing gum and playing golf at the same time!!
Hahaha maybe that's why so many pros dip tobacco, lol
Bu
I like these videos a lot. I am trying to not let my shoulders fly out when making the first move. This will be done with some extra flexibility drills and reps at the range. Do you have any drills good for not letting shoulder spin out.
Work on keeping your left should down longer to start your downswing
OK guys you are hinting with Justin Rose in what I coined 'The One Piece Downswing rehearsal'. What I strongly advocate for all golfers to do prior to the actually swinging the club is this. At the top of your swing maintain your coiled body and simply drop the club head solidly on the ground using only your hands and arms unfolding. Note approximately where you dropped the club head. Pretty far away from the ball to say the least. Right? Now return to the original set up an do it again only this time allow your body to unwind and shift it own weight. Doing my " One Piece Downswing rehearsal" works extraordinary for me and it will work for everyone no matter how good or bad their take away might be. The computer model actually supports what I am saying to be true. Everything else you mentions simply reacts with ' The One Piece Downswing" for perfect impact to the ball and a classic follow through. I know you think I am nuts; but try it yourself even with your eyes closed and get less experience players to try it as well. Remember; you heard about this unique downswing rehearsal from me first. No one that I know of ever suggested it. Their are many reasons why this happens automatically. Thanks for considering giving it a try.
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying to drop the club while unwinding and shifting?
Vinsk no the rehearsal is meant to show a player if he did the back swing correctly. He would turn his body round and if the club drop to the ground similar as he set it up he has made a good backswing. If the club is drop more at his trail foot he went in to deep for his take away backswing. Also I recently discovered for myself that on my downswing the activation of the lead side and trail side actually begin to take place at the exact same time. Allow me to explain how this Is done: At the top of my swing I quickly unfold/ unhinge/ release ( call it what you will) all the hinges on my lead side all at once. The lead hand; the lead shoulder joint; the lead side of the hip joint; all of the lead side joints release quickly and in unison with each other. This immediate activate my trail hand which then allows me to swing the club with equal, quick and effective power coming from both sides of the body and ending in a classical pro looking finish. I know this has never been taught by any PGA teacher; but I can see the pro doing it; either instinctively or knowingly. The ides the the lead hip or knee should start a downswing is totally bogus to me and so I had to try another way. Hope I made myself clear and you try it yourself. This technique will prevent anyone from pushing or puling the club as it equalizes the powers coming from both sides of the body. Cheers
Dudes right arm should be bent more into impact
I wish you two would start dressing like the Skipper and Gilligan. Maybe for Halloween? Please.
😂😂😂
Great vid. My right arms getting stuck on the downswing causing a steep clubshaft. Any ideas? Do u do swing reviews
We can help you with that, Chubby. Go here for the details - athleticmotiongolf.clickfunnels.com/ilessons
The gears guy said it all and never opened his mouth. To separate the back and down just call it swing... although the feelings are distinctly different. We could of course start our swing like the baseball player club on shoulder or close to. The ball isn’t moving, smash away! You guys continue to bring forth the answers to my questions usually without even speaking. Love it, keep it up guys!
haha, we'll be out of a job if he ever starts talking🤭
Don’t think so you guys have the best insight on UA-cam. Your explanations of gears dude is nothing but mind blowing. You guys rock; my understanding of the golf swing has improved exponentially!👍👍👍
At about 5 minutes, you mention body lowers the head. The “squat” causes the Maximum head down bur what causes the initial head down? Neck bend? Hip bend? Back bend? Early knee bend?
This is the best teaching visual aid in existence. You guys are great and please keep making videos.
Thanks for watching, Sam, and we plan to keep on sharing😉
The cliffs golf instructor told me to watch you guys because you are the best UA-cam golf instructors he has seen on UA-cam 👍🏻
Andrew Ryan wow that’s great to hear !!
Is that re-centering the figure 8 pivot action Ben Hogan did and taught decades ago This re- centering word just changed from figure 8 or is there a difference between the two
We coined the term re-centering from what we see in good players do in 3D captures. They move their upper and lower bodies off the ball rough 1-1.5" in the backswing, then bring them back to where they started at address at the top. A literal re-centering of their body at the top, which is key for helping to generate ground forces early enough in the downswing. We've also done videos on the figure 8 you mentioned. That has more to do with "how" a player can position their pelvis as they re-center. Not every player will used the figure 8 while re-centering, but we see it help a ton of golfers move their pelvis correctly while shifting back towards the target.
Wow thank you I have always thought the backswing started after the back swing has been completed. You have helped me so much!
Just knowing that it doesn't it a big step towards a great swing, Tracey👊
This is rreally about a video I saw yesterday about set up and keeping your hip joint overs your ankle. I/m 75 and suffering ffrom old man syndrome of lack of mobility. That being said I coupled the address position with a pause at the top and the thought of turning my chest and dropping my hands. OMG, what a difference and the others in my ggroup definatly noticed and commented. At least a 20 yard difference and in the middle. Thank you!
Every amateur needs to watch this video...great explanation guys.
Thanks, Carl!👊
Quick question guys. If us amateurs get back to our lead side (assuming we actually do, and do it properly!) way too late.....and some pros start back to their lead side at club first parallel on the backswing........why don't we amateurs just leave "all" / "most" of our pressure on the lead side throughout the swing full stop? And just rotate our chest/arm unit? This sounds very like stack + tilt maybe? Not sure if I'm explaining myself well. Maybe as an "exaggerated feel"....coz we'll always maybe move SOME pressure to our trail side? Thanks!
Good question, Mark. In the most basic terms, the reason not to do that would be for the same reason you wouldn't throw a ball doing that... it really limits your dynamic movement and ability to generate speed. There needs to be a shift to the trail side, it just needs to be early. In fact, the best way we've found to get our ams moving to the lead side better is to help them get to the trail side better... the move to the lead side becomes much more of a reaction then which is always better.
I do this kinda, I start with my weight on my left side even though I still move It to the right then back to left mainly bc it just helps me feel how it was at address if that makes sense. Also with shits that are in between clubs I’ll leave my weight on my left side throughout the entire swing. It works for me
Mark Lucey l
I'm working on shifting my centre of gravity to the left early in the downswing at the moment. But I'm not sure if I should be rotating hard simultaneously or if it's more of a shift then turn move? Could be a good separate video..
Bob Toski in his picture book on golf, talks of a simple but world class drill: stand straight with arms to the front ( where a club handle would be)and then slowly swing the arms back and forth ...sense the pressure shift to back heel and then front foot and back again...as you are doing this start making small pitches...this is the golf swing with weight shift.
What you do in the backswing you must undo in the downswing. For example, if you lift the arms and bend the right arm in the backswing, just do the opposite in the downswing. Just be in a slightly more athletic and ready position to deal with the extra speed in the body and club.
It's flowing , but I remember tiger did a drill once with butch Harmon where he stopped at the top of the backswing fully before continuing, to work on getting into a better positions on the down swing
Just started watching your content...just fantastic! Thank you for giving all this great content!
Wishing y'all all the best
CW
Thanks so much, CR, we're glad you found us! Let us know if we can do anything to help your game.
You mentioned in this video and have shown a Pro in another video getting weight shift when club parallel on backswing. Since weight shift is such a major issue with us amateurs, why not start with a reverse K at set up by slight bumping hip over left knee, ankle and then start backswing. I understand it may limit the back turn but may gain on consistency, No?
How do the players that start their shift as early as club parallel and still get a proper coil into the trail side?
Because the shift is a lateral movement and happens with both closing and opening rotational movement.
I’m shorts you show the arms coming down with club below hands. This is gold for my swing. Curious about what starts and when the rotation happens. Love you channel
Can't wait to try this. I've been struggling MORE since I have really focused on shifting my weight all to my trail side through the backswing. I get caught behind, unable to shift my weight to my front side. This leaves me topping, or hitting the ball a glancing blow off the toe. Hoping this is the key.
Another amazing description/explanation!...you guys provide an aspect of learning the golf swing unlike anyone else! Thanks
Appreciate you, Dave!
This has helped me a lot in coming back to golf after a 12 year hiatus. One question though is I semi to pull a fair amount of shots with recentering on time. Any suggestions?
I would like you guys to describe more about internal cues and how external cues benefit different levels of skill as described by PHD Gabriel Wulf.
Thanks guys I'm having problems figuring out the roll /timing of the legs in the swing. Specifically should the leg/hip turn finish before the arm swing finishes or should they follow the arms and then start the downswing? I was at the range today and was able to do both but legs finishing first seemed easier to sequence. Thanks
I tee up my putts on a 3" peg and I haven't missed a single putt since January 2020. It really help.
3:00 is a hard lesson to learn. It felt so incredibly underpowered and unnecessary as a beginner golfer. Fred Couples swing was my inspiration, as his hip firing to initiate the downswing is very visible to me.
Muscles are springy. You get the backswing in motion to rotate and load the muscles for the downswing.
The dopamine is being released after practicing this tip!! Thank you for putting it in such simple terms. Again, Thank you!!
So the weight shift doesn’t start at the top of the swing if I understand correctly. It starts around right arm parallel.
Your video really shifted my thinking from swing “mechanics” into swing “dynamics”. Thanks!
I thought the first part of the down swing was the hips turning first as Ben Hogan explayed doesn’t look like that in your demonstration
