Storing guns in their safe with barrels downward helps avoid oil running back into the action, potentially saturating stock timber and gumming up moving parts.
BTW for anyone interested it's not lead that you see in dirty barrels (maybe in tiny amounts) but unburnt gunpowder - which is why there is a difference in the amount on hot and cold days.
I have just applied for my first shotgun certificate and every question in my new found passion you guys answer them with your videos! Nice work srs happy shooting!!!
Great video, A few people here asking about using a bore snake. I use one at the very start of my cleaning process but you would be surprised how much crap is left in the barrels after a run through with a snake.
To be honest I don't generally do anything else. I have found less is very much more shotgun cleaning, otherwise when you come back to it oil has run down in to the action and started leaking in to the wood.
Good vid you do the same as me when it comes to cleaning except I do the jag at the end after the wool pull through the jag gets all the fluff out of the barrels. Good vid keep them coming
I tend to find crud migrates under my chokes, so I pop those out after I've finshed with the jag, cleaning them and the choke housings in the barrel with my little finger and the Napier 'toilet roll' with oil. Pop chokes back in and polish barrels inside as you did.
Mine seem to stand up pretty well, they stay in really tight. When I do clean them I like to give them a soak in bore cleaner. I will cover this in a video soon. Thanks for watching and the input :)
Using too much oil will run back into the action but if you are storing for a while and you dont like storing barrel down can you not put a cotton wool ball or a small ball of rag in each chamber ?
Thank you for such a comprehensive video. I'd like to ask you, can we spray a barrel from outside with oil that we use for bore cleaning, for removing led? Will not it harm bluing of the shotgun?
great video. I have just bought napier kit because my Bisley stuff is getting a bit past it. what are your thoughts on using 0000 wire wool round an old brush? I got told it works to remove the plastic/lead residue from the chamber end of the bore, but am reluctant to use it. I know that chrome is harder than steel and it is only 0000 so it shouldn't scratch it but I am still dubious.
I'm in two minds about the Napier vs Bisley "argument". I was all Bisey, then tried the Napier borecleaner and gun lubricant with jag and ultraclean, but now back to bisley. I may use a combo of bisley for barrels and napier for ejectors. Having said that, I'm sure they're identical anyway.
Comes down to whatever works for you at the end of the day. My first kit was bisley and I really didn't like it. The Napier kit just seemed a lot quicker and easier for me. Thanks for watching :)
Putting the gun back in the cabinet barrels pointing down avoids having to take the gun apart, and avoids excess oil from potentially ruining the stock.
Ive thought about using that blue roll you can get like what you see mechanics using in garages. The napier stuff is great, but its expensive and doesnt last very long.
I use ballistol to clean all my weapons. Its great also for exterior and internal gun parts. I love the smell of ballistol too, it has a million and 1 uses including leather maintenance and bicycles :-)
Yes, not many sellers of ballistol in the UK as it has to be imported from US or Germany I believe but there is a store I know of on ebay that sells it. You really have to try it. It's nothing like any other oil. It's made from 100% natural ingredients yet it doesn't gum up your weapons. It does everything any oil can do including preventing rust, lubricating, cleaning etc etc yet it is recommended for many things that traditional oils are not meant for like maintaining leather & even wood so you won't have problems with it ruining you shotgun stocks like traditional oils. You can even use it for cleaning animals paws and outer ears. It is a little bit expensive but I to get the best value I recommend you get it in the largest pour can rather than the spray you can get a 500ml can for around £15 so it goes a long way.
gus cameron Not quite sure what you mean but I am in the UK atm & I buy it from eBay ballistol store & I'm fairly sure that they post using a standard courier.
AWSOME bro. I'd like to get one of those big white bore mop like you have. I've never seen one of those in any big box store, or local gun shops in my area. Could you give me the name of the item, and where it can be purchased and maybe it could be ordered online, I would appreciate it, man. Great video.
Have you seen those BoarSnakes its pritty much an all in one brush and mop or patch. I use it and it takes literally seconds to clean the barrel great thing to have especialy to clean in the field :) great vids keep em coming :)
Boarsnakes make sense in the field but when doing a proper clean it doesn't scrub away the build up of burnt powder at the mouth of the chamber you need a bronze brush for that. Using the jag and 'loo roll' is good because it takes away dirt without putting it all over your polishing rod/boar snake. Thanks for watching :)
Brian Kavanagh You shouldn't ever really need to check the trigger mechanism with a Browning B525. My local clay ground has one that has fired over a million rounds that is still on the original firing pin and only cleaned as shown here. Thanks for watching :)
+James Ingham Eventually you will have a build up of lead in the chamber in front of where the cartridge opens. Aside from leaving an ugly black line you will find shells will start to fail to eject because the lead becomes sticky and holds them in. If you go between 2.5" shells to 3" you may even find they no longer chamber at all or get stuck.
yeah i need to get a kit like that to make mine all pretty and sparkly, my cleaning supplies have dwindled and i haven't replenished them since i don't go shooting often.. i don't think i pulled the trigger last year at all actually.
This was a general cleaning video. You shouldn't need to clean the chokes every time in fact I think I've only ever done mine once in two years. But I will be doing a video separately on choke cleaning as there are a number of factors to consider.
when I talk funny with English long was you can have a shotgun shooting slugs and semi-automatic but you cannot have a rifle that's above 22 in semi-automatic I wonder about rifled shotguns and semi-automatic
You should also NEVER push a bronze brush part way down the barrel and pull it back. It will cause the wires of the bronze brush to scratch the bore. You push it all the way through, then pull back through all the way. If your going to show the eight way, you should know the right way. You have most of it down, but most young shooters do not know the harm a brush can do to a bore if used improperly.
Sandhu Bhupinder Novice?? I have been cleaning match rifles longer than you have been alive probably. Been cleaning guns for the better part of 50 years. I think I know what I am talking about. You do what you want. Just trying to pass on years of wisdom, and if you are too dumb to accept it, thats your fault.
pickin4you that's why it's made of soft bronze, so it WONT damage the steel barrel. I've been doing it that way for years, and my shotgun bores are like mirrors.
It's funny you ask that actually as I ran out of the Napier cleaning paper last weekend and had to resort to loo roll. The reason I'd advise against it is that it tears, is hard to get on the jag and leaves bits of fluff in the action! Will do the job if your desperate though. Thanks for watching :)
Scrunched up newspaper serves the same purpose and three passes through the bore typically leaves it ready for bronze brush and mop. Next option is kitchen roll, but newspaper is an excellent initial cleaner.
Throwing away a shotgun because of oil staining the stock? Lol great, let me know when that happens and I'll take it off your hands. Guns are just tools, they're going to see use if you use them.
In your parlance “if I’m being honest” I think you must be sponsored by Napier. Their cleaning supplies aren’t the cheapest and you’re very liberal with that roll. The rest of the gun can be cleaned too it doesn’t have to be limited to the barrels.
Storing guns in their safe with barrels downward helps avoid oil running back into the action, potentially saturating stock timber and gumming up moving parts.
if that happens you are using WAYYYY too much oil
BTW for anyone interested it's not lead that you see in dirty barrels (maybe in tiny amounts) but unburnt gunpowder - which is why there is a difference in the amount on hot and cold days.
Good video. Just bought a Beretta S55. When you ran the brass brush through the barrel, the arse pocket of your jeans had S55 on it.
Josh Hess thought I was tHe only one who noticed
I have just applied for my first shotgun certificate and every question in my new found passion you guys answer them with your videos! Nice work srs happy shooting!!!
+robbie neill Yes it all comes down to personal preference, just trying to give some pointers to new shooters. Thanks for watching :)
Great video,
A few people here asking about using a bore snake. I use one at the very start of my cleaning process but you would be surprised how much crap is left in the barrels after a run through with a snake.
The only time I use a bore snake is out on the hunt or at the rifle range.
Perhaps a follow up video on how to properly oil/grease the action before putting the gun away??
Great video. Thanks for sharing mate :)
To be honest I don't generally do anything else. I have found less is very much more shotgun cleaning, otherwise when you come back to it oil has run down in to the action and started leaking in to the wood.
Peter Manojlovic ,
As a new gun owner very useful and informative, many thanks for putting in the time to produce the video.
Stan Stevens I am glad you found it useful, thanks for watching :)
Good vid you do the same as me when it comes to cleaning except I do the jag at the end after the wool pull through the jag gets all the fluff out of the barrels. Good vid keep them coming
Thanks being new to shotguns helps me keep the vids coming

Fantastic video Sam great attention to detail
Excellent video 👍

Another newbie here! Thanks for the vid.
I am a bit sad as I am as much looking forward to cleaning my first gun as I am shooting it. :-)
I am quite OCD aswell BUT believe me after the first ten times it will become a pain in the ass!

Ha ha! No doubt, but I have a 14 year old son to take over as he has lots more gun experience. He can do it in payment for shooting.

I love the channel mate just bought my new berreta 12g its awsome keep it up from fred
Putting the gun back in the cabinet barrels pointing down avoids having to take the gun apart, and avoids excess oil from potentially ruining the stock.
If you can manage the balancing act yes! Thanks for watching :)
I just tried that as it happens. It's actually pretty secure if you have foam to hold the barrels normally but now holds the action. Good idea.
would the bronze brush scrape the inside of the barrels ? and if I use a bristle brush would it be strong enough to clean the barrels.
What are your thoughts on the bore snake???
Ive thought about using that blue roll you can get like what you see mechanics using in garages.
The napier stuff is great, but its expensive and doesnt last very long.
animal79thecat I think you're right, I just ran out of the napier stuff and with delivery its about 15 quid on amazon.
Would you recommend any different treatment with a Matt black type barel? I own one of the ata’s
Good Vid, will come in handy when i eventually get my SGC :s Have you not tried making the 'Edd's Red' solvent for cleaning? Seems pretty good
I haven't heard of Edd Red ?
How often do you think that you should clean the action on a semi automatic shotgun, or rifle, vs the barrel.
Should you remove any choke tubes before you clean the barrel
+Graeme Groot No I would clean it with them in and then if they need doing take them out and clean them afterwards.
I use ballistol to clean all my weapons. Its great also for exterior and internal gun parts. I love the smell of ballistol too, it has a million and 1 uses including leather maintenance and bicycles :-)
Yes I have heard it is very popular in the states, I've not come across it before.
Yes, not many sellers of ballistol in the UK as it has to be imported from US or Germany I believe but there is a store I know of on ebay that sells it.

Apparently Royal Mail incinerate this product as in the uk your bit allowed to mail it and there is no other way of getting it :/
gus cameron Not quite sure what you mean but I am in the UK atm & I buy it from eBay ballistol store & I'm fairly sure that they post using a standard courier.

Nice video.
what is the name of the 2 oil gun spray?!
thanks for the video I am buying my first shotgun in 2 weeks, now I now how to do it right thanks
Thanks for watching, glad it was of help :)
Nice video and nice gun
Thanks for watching :)
instead of taking off the barrels for storage, could you put snap caps in to stop the oil?
+MegaSammydude You could but you don't really need to worry about it to be honest.
+srspower ok thanks for the advice
How many rounds do you usually put through it before you look at the trigger mechanisms, and other moving parts? I also loved the video btw
Brian Kavanagh You shouldn't ever really need to check the trigger mechanism with a Browning B525. My local clay ground has one that has fired over a million rounds that is still on the original firing pin and only cleaned as shown here. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you!
O
What are the disadvantages of not bothering to clean the barrels?
+James Ingham Eventually you will have a build up of lead in the chamber in front of where the cartridge opens. Aside from leaving an ugly black line you will find shells will start to fail to eject because the lead becomes sticky and holds them in. If you go between 2.5" shells to 3" you may even find they no longer chamber at all or get stuck.
Could I apply this kind of idea with rifles
With a rifle you want to use an appropriate bronze brush followed by a pull through so completely different really.
Can you use a bore snake instead?
Of course! This is just my preferred method. Thanks for watching :)
yeah i need to get a kit like that to make mine all pretty and sparkly, my cleaning supplies have dwindled and i haven't replenished them since i don't go shooting often.. i don't think i pulled the trigger last year at all actually.
what about cleaning the chokes ;) and oiling them so they dont get stuck on to barrel.

good video next time you shoot a pheasant can you do a video on how to gut them.
thanks
I generally give them away! But good idea, I have been planning on doing some butchery videos :)
He said he might do chokes in another vid Ahmet
Thanks for watching Matthew :)
Gun Scrubber, Bore Snake, G96, Q-Tips, Done.
Sunday is Church day :)
You can go shooting after church!
@@srspower Yep, sure can. But, Church is first :) Love the videos, new scriber

What are you talking about? Bronze is softer than steel that's why the brush is made from it. It can't scratch the bore.
u r perfectly right the guy is a little novice
Sandhu Bhupinder
Novice?? I have been cleaning match rifles longer than you have been alive probably. Been cleaning guns for the better part of 50 years. I think I know what I am talking about. You do what you want. Just trying to pass on years of wisdom, and if you are too dumb to accept it, thats your fault.
pickin4you that's why it's made of soft bronze, so it WONT damage the steel barrel. I've been doing it that way for years, and my shotgun bores are like mirrors.
I suppose I can with the proper equipment
Why not use loo roll?
It's funny you ask that actually as I ran out of the Napier cleaning paper last weekend and had to resort to loo roll. The reason I'd advise against it is that it tears, is hard to get on the jag and leaves bits of fluff in the action! Will do the job if your desperate though. Thanks for watching :)
Scrunched up newspaper serves the same purpose and three passes through the bore typically leaves it ready for bronze brush and mop. Next option is kitchen roll, but newspaper is an excellent initial cleaner.
I use paper towel. Doesn't rip as easy and is checkered so pulls up a lot more crap
what I do for 1 is wear gloves for the chemicals
why buy gun oil when the napier cleaner already has it in?!!
Throwing away a shotgun because of oil staining the stock? Lol great, let me know when that happens and I'll take it off your hands.
Guns are just tools, they're going to see use if you use them.

Napier not the cheapest. But they are probably one of the best. "If I'm being honest".
