Dennis Wong I believe you are the next Takashi Amano
thats some serious information in such a short video. love it.
Wow! This is absolutely stunning. Such a great eye for a scape, really enjoying the sense of scale
Excellent video. I have checked out some of your other videos too and love your relaxed, informative style - none of the flashy shouting which seems to blight UA-cam now. Subbed and added you to my 'recommended channels' list.
Groovy.
ha thanks, I have watched your channel before; lots of interesting stuff, I remember your talk on bio-media ~ Long before your channel became so diversified
When you say shouty I can only think of one channel!
The Stifler of planted tanks :) I feel he fills an important niche in this beautiful hobby as well.
I wasn't referring to any particular channel but some of them do get a bit loud - lots of people like that and I've been accused of being boring hundreds of times, lol.
I much prefer to watch a relaxed channel's videos where the presenter is making the videos to genuinely get good, useful information out there as I reckon information sharing should always be the main motivation when making videos.
The diversification really does harm the channel as far as subscribers goes but I like it that way since there's so much which interests me. I'm sure when I release some videos there are dozens of people unsubscribe, lol
Hoping to start filming a series of aquarium / filtration / pond videos soon and although I actually have them planned out (something I don't normally do) the available time for filming and editing just isn't there.
@@pondguru yes I agree with you I think those you tubers suffer from adhd
Amazing tank, and amazing info with the time lapse shots using arrows and captions. Great watch!
Everything about your videos amazes me. From your explanations to your diagrams to your perfection in this art. Thank you-
Good to see the videos coming in quick succession
Thank you so much.. Not everyone dares to give the information you share.. I believe you have a unique style and it awesome!! Keep it up..
You're a true Aqua-artist! Great job and thanks for the insight!
not only a aquascaper , but a good detailed explanation which many lacks, lol
Fantastic content as always, Dennis. It'll take a while to watch your entire catalogue, but I am working through it with gladness!
Thank you for your videos! Very informative and direct. Please keep sharing your info. It's appreciated!
Amazing! Please keep sharing your knowledge.
thank you Dennis , you are truly amazing
thanks ~ you're welcome ~
thanks for an other excellent video.
i wish i had the knowledge to make my tank this nice but i always have problems with algea , i'm getting better but i have a long way to go .
well it's part of what makes this hobby what it is , the quest for perfection .
nobody will ever attain it , but you come as close as it gets .
Awesome Dennis. Great tips and outcome!
absolutely gorgeous... gives me some ideas for my next tank setup
Amazing work. Thank you for the detailed description!
You are more than a senior tutor in aquatic environment
i love how detailed you explain everything :) thank you for posting the video! :)
incredible. I just purchased a 100 gallon tank and will use your video has a guide. thank you!
Truly beautiful, great work.
Seeing your tanks is so inspirational. This makes me want to rescape my tank so bad. I only wish I had your skill and knowledge of aquascaping.
Thanks man, practice with an empty tank or table top with hardscape ~ Then you can experiment with layouts without committing to planting the whole tank
very good,thank you dennis🙏
Sick video Dennis! Thanks!
im so jealous. superb work dennis.
Great tutorial, Love your video always. Hope to see more videos from you soon. thanks.
Simply, the best on youtube.
Please make more videoooos!
amazing
Excellent
as always, amazing! another aquascaping art and science by dennis wong . . .
amazing thanks for sharing the plastic levels trick
Thanks a lot for all the useful informations, your website is awesome too, I've learned a lot, and now waiting for my Apt complete. Keep up the good work :)
Well put together video
Your videos are wonderful and full of information. Subbed and thank you!
Nice video!
Awesome!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Wow ! Awesome. Love it.
wow! beautiful
Sweet!
hey bro you have a great idea about elevating the tank space
ill surly try this technique in my nxt scape
Great video! Subscribed.
Wow
Planted tank master!
Great video man!
Thanks man, your channel is now featured as well. Congrats~
It was good idea
I just would love to do my aquarium like this. Maybe my next set up.
wow..u r such a pro..very nice tanks..i wish my tank look half as good as yours
Keep practising man~ I'm sure you can do it too
Dennis Wong but seriously, you videos are like lectures, full of usefull and important informations.
Perfection !!! :)
Very informative video as usual! :) I feel like listing to a lecture from a professor! :P (without feeling sleepy of course!) :P
GOOD MOVE !!
Your tanks are marvelous, maybe you could make a quick video about your tank stands and the insides of them 😃
ha, there is nothing exciting in them ? These are copies of standard ADA stands
That was a great video. Loved the extra info on the plants. Thanks
happy new year Dennis
Thanks man, Hope its a good year for you too~
thanks
you should do more videos!
That brownie ghost buce is absolutely stunning! Pretty sure buces will be as popular as anubias when prices drop and more people get to know this group of plants. There are so many species, with so many sizes, colours and shapes! And they are easy as well. Too bad many species are going extinct in the wild due to habitat loss.
Yup. For now, some species will be preserved due to the planted tank trade. The variety is great, every tank can be unique
Dennis both scapes are amazing. I do think the ridge scape is a much better scape though.I think it has to do with the better use of colour.
I can really take some lessons from this scape for the future.
I know your scapes are always to a very high level, but this ridge scape surely suggests an evolution and refinement in your aquascaping.
Hey thanks man, I'm constantly learning too by observing other people's scapes ~ Thanks for contributing to the community
I like the halo music
Dennis, what surface skimmer do you use or recommend? Thanks!
You are another Takashi Amano
Truly inspirational setup. In te 70 Watt custom lighting are you going for RGB modules for the whites? As for te blues and red, may I know why have you excluded royal blue and deep red?
Where’d you get the stones? Amazing scape!
Damn your good
Hi dennis, I just made an aquascape mostly inspired by yours.
I was wondering if you would do an update on your tanks?
Great works For which are used the plastics with which you have given the height to the back part of the aquarium ??? thanks
Those are drainage cells / flo-cells sold by rainwater management companies
This is a lot better than George Farmer
hahaa don't be mean ~ He is a nice guy
great video as always.
would you please share photos of each step especially additional photos you might have for substrate?
i'm thinking of a similar design but would like to know more about what you did specifically with substrate.
did you use only one type of substrate?
would you please provide photos from sides as well?
eh there are 3 layers as shown in the video ?
Both Tanks are awsome. Sorry I missed one point. Do you cover those plastic plates with sand, After rocks are placed as per requirement?
Where can we get these plates online?
Hi Dennis! stunning plants and hardscape. anyway,
how did you make the r. rotundifolia to turn orange/red like that? really amazing
lower nitrates, stronger light and generally healthy conditions for the plants in general
Superb scape and colours! How do you fill the soil underneath the crates? Do you just pour it through the holes in the crates and let them settle? I'm planning to re-do my 120cm 300L, and would be my first dirt setup. Currently can't decide between using crates, or bottom layer of lava rocks to create height.
It's filled with crushed baked clay chips/lava rock, and dirt/aquasoil in the upper layers
Stunning work, Dennis! Do you have an account on local forum Aquatic Quotient? Don't think I've seen you post there before. Sorry if I'm wrong. And which are your favourite LFS' you frequent here to get the diverse variety of plants? Thanks!
Hey thanks, yeah I do maintain a journal at AQ; should be one of the more active ones. I head to Aquatic Avenue & Fishy business , East ocean aquatic mainly; and the large scale ones like seaview to get equipment
Beautiful and instructional. Do u cool the tank for plant growth?
Yes for this setup; air-conditioned room
Another fantastic video! Do you use tap water? Also, how do you keep the soil from levelling off over time?
Yep, my tap water is alright; keeping the slope constantly planted prevents erosion
my first UA-cam thumbs up & comment. love your presentation and awesome months of work. wish I could say more but your work deserve more..
how could I communicate with you beside watching you video?
Heh thanks.. you can join us on facebook; the group links are in the description
Awesome scape..thanks for sharing! Is your hardscape lace rock?
Thanks ! The rocks are seiryu, which are a type of weathered limestone.... which does increase the water's KH constantly, so maintenance itself requires quite regular water changes to keep it within usable limits
awesome layout..
those black trays are drainage cells?
Yup!
Amazing video!!! Thank you for sharing your knowlegde. The bml in your 120g tank has only 78 CRI but the color is still very nice and look real, how can it is possible?
Ha, I was going to talk about it in another lighting vid, but haven't gotton to it. CRI doesn't determine the vibrancy of colors in a tank; it's only good for the purpose of relativistic color comparison. So it's not a particularly important value unlike what people think. Think about it this way; if you're running an art gallery where there are 1001 shades of color which you want to show accurately you need a 100 CRI bulb; however if you're running a stage show where the main costumes color are red/blue and you want those colors to pop; you just need strong red/blue lighting.
What kind of leds do you use in your fixture ? 3w leds? And how many of them, great video
those are custom built fixtures by BML, but they no longer produce aquarium fixtures
Tanks looks beautiful and healthy, where and what kind of baked clay chips did you use? thanks for sharing.
Thanks ~ They are baked clay chips used for growing Orchids in; crushed lava rock, Turface, would also work
+Dennis Wong Awesome thank you. keep up the great work:)
Awesome video as always Dennis. I feel like I learn more from your videos than any other source.
I was wondering what your thoughts were on proper kH in the planted aquarium. And if you would recommend your warmer lighting setup, the results clearly speak for themselves. And if so would most 165w black box leds be comparable to your setup? If I run the whites/r/g at near max and the blues minimally?
Thank you and as always looking forward to your next video.
Hard to comment on the blackboxes without testing, but I would think they would work. 165watts seem a lot though ? that's drawing as much power as using T5 tubes. KH has more applications for livestock than plants; any non-zero value would do. The whole idea of needing to buffer to 3 is kinda a fad in some countries, no real benefit.
PureXproduct i used those black boxes. they work but its very difficult. with the blue channel low its bearly enough light for high light carpeting plants. they have i new black box fixture for plants now and im switching to them. sbreef freshwater led and they are $129
Do you still use this combination of dirt and aquasoil?
Dennis, could you make a video talking about red plants and how does the light affect the it's coloration?
Thanks.
Need more research; the issue is, seems to be different across different plants
Amazing :) what lights you using???
Those are BML LEDs, but they are no longer in production
Great video, love the grate idea, good way to save money and create a bigger slope. The aquascape looks amazing too.where do you get your plants from? They look amazing
Thanks man, I get my plants from local shops, sometimes I also hand carry them back from overseas trips
Nice, you have some great local fish stores then.
I see that you have the plastic grid for your actual scape. How do you prevent the soil from rolling to the front?
hello Dennis, where can I purchase that plastic from?
Hey Dennis! Could i used crushed lava rock for filler as a substitute for your plastic risers?
sure thing
Awesome! The 4ft tank layout and the colors combination! You are really looking into precisely about the technique and all reason behind each aspect. Hardcore hobbyist ! This 4ft tank do you sending for layout competition?
ha thanks... Hmm might stand a chance at AGA but it's not really suitable for Iaplc I think
go for it , put your country on the list
Are those seriyu or manten rock?
hello.
I loved the aquarium.
And I'll try to recreate it, if you could tell me how many kilos of stone you use and what the name of that stone was, thank you.
It's seiryu rock.. I'm not sure how many kilos though; probably around 30 ? or 40kg
What kind of garden soil should I use for the middle layer?
I have same question in mind.
I watched your co2 video which says the reactor and diffuser both achieve 35ppm. Any reason to switch to inline diffuser if I already have inline reactor?
You can use either, but in my CO2 vid I also showed that plants can utilize the CO2 mist - so I prefer to have mist in my tank than not. Also there is no strict rule that states 35ppm is the best - tanks work ranging from lower to higher levels, depending on your plant mix
Dennis I'm digging your videos ha!
Question, I've looked for those baked clay chips and I'm having some issues locating them. Is it just standard red pottery clay?
ha thanks ~ Hmm they're sold here as orchid potting media, could source for lava rock chips as well. I think pottery clay chips might be a bit dense ?
Dennis Wong
Ahh I got you. I found what they call clay pebbles (for orchids etc.) that are pretty uniform in shape and size, I may be able to just crush them up a bit so they won't be so perfectly spherical if you think that would work. And the last thing I'm hunting is that drainage cell you've got as support for hardscapes and slopes. Seems getting my hands on those isn't going to be as easy as I thought. Or something similar for that matter. They really are perfect for that.
I really appreciate your feedback Thank You!
Justin
Hi dennis..in that 4ft tank whats the total weight of the rock?
Dennis I have the 6500k bml dutch above my 40b. I don't have a par tester, but curious what you think the height above the tank should be?
Could easily hang it 4-6 inches and it should still do well, 40bs are pretty short. The better answer is; as high as when your plants grow well, but you have no algae.
mine is roughly 6 inches above the surface and I've dialed it back to 75% power. I'm curious as to what you do with Ur ei dosing? I just can't find a happy medium and still get certain plants that won't grow or slightly stunted. I've tried so many different amounts of ei dosing for weeks on end. saw some improvements but still issues.
Try dosing less trace; about 1/5 or 1/10 the amounts. Interestingly, while I talk about EI frequently, I almost never do it; plants grow too fast when nutrient levels are that high and trimming is an endless chore. I usually do the equivalent of 1/5 EI or so
where do you get most of your stuff from? green chapter? FNM?
Mostly fishy business, Seaview
hi again dennis. hey bud i want to have discus in my tank so it needs to be 82-83 degrees F. i really want to use rotala rotundifolia but cannot get a confirmation that i will grow at these temperatures. i read somewhere in one of the comments on one of your videos that your tanks run above 80 F but i cant find it again. so id like to ask will rotala rotundifolia grow well in a tank running 82-83 F? thank you man! you are helping me become a true aqua artist and im very grateful. i cant wait to show you my aquascape that ive created using your teachings. ive been doing this for 3 years and none of my scapes were as awesome as this one is going to be. hardscape is done and just waiting for lights
It will grow, but RR tends to be more leggy with longer internodes when it is in a Co2 injected tank with higher temps (80f+). The ludwigia species tend to be less sensitive to heat generally speaking. Good to hear that you're working on your new scape ~ Can email me if you have further questions as well
So amazing. Do you treat your soil before using it (mineralized)?
I recommend people to do so. But I don't myself because I select soils that have already highly degraded/low level of organics.
Alright, Thanks man! Going to start mineralizing for a 90 gallon!
Hi dennis. Excellent set up. No words to explain. I can not c new comments. Are u there to guide us. Plz reply.
I have 6ft x 2 ft x 2ft tank. Need ur advice to select the spectrum.
Thanks in advance.
How do you intend to choose your spectrum
Hi Dennis Wong ( takashi amano)
Thanks a lot for replying. U r just perfect in ur work n i realy dont have words to appreciate it. Ur kind advice will help me a lot.
I have 6 ft x 2ft x 2ft planted aquarium n would like to make it dutch type. From last 3 yrs i have spent a lot on lights. But not getting desired result. My mote carlo carpet r not growing n also other red/ green stem plants dont grow well. I love the light spectrum n colour of BML light. But now they dont sell aquarium light. In india we dont have much options for light.
If u guide me with some spectrum i will try to build it locally.
Thanks in advance.
Hey dennis, amazing vids, nice tank, and nice content! I am going to watch your vids for sure!
But can you please tell me som more about the tank measurements and lighting?
I have a 100 by 30 by 40 tank but i think its too narrow for an amazing scape like this.
Hey thanks, It's 120cm by 45 by 45. I think your dimensions are alright~
thanks for replying so fast!
And what lighting do you have on your tank?
It's a custom built BML LED light bar. But the company no longer sell lights for aquarium market
could you please give an update on these tanks, specifically the one with the small cave
most of the small tanks removed to make space for larger ones...
I would really appreciate if you make a small update video or share some photos of this "4ft Cave & ridgeline scape" tank you've shown in this video. I'm planning to do an 180x45x40 tank mostly very similar to this scape you've shown here. However, I keep getting algae.
