      Thanks man ~ things look complicated as a whole, but remember it's still just basic (but meticulous) stacking of widely available hardscape materials (common lava rock, spiderwood). It takes a bit of time, but work on things one part at a time and I'm sure you will do well too

    Super tank Dennis. Great to see a new upload from you too.
    I had been thinking about attempting a more elaborate hardscape for my tank after a recent house move.
    However, I chickened out as it was a stressful move for me, my livestock and plants! I damaged my CO2 reg on my nano tank and lost my oldest Discus (8yrs old) in my main display tank soon after the move.
    Also, my first successful attempt of growing a HC cuba carpet didnt survive the house move because of my damaged CO2 reg. (I was succesful growing HC after following your advice in one off your videos, so thank for the help! ).
    Anyway, your tank looks great, and it might just be the motivation i need to give a more complex hardscape a try.
    Thanks again for the videos man.

      I think you are right. Would love to see you do a IAPLC entry in the 130-150cm range.
      Your plant selection and growing skill is undeniable. If anyone want to place in the top 10 next year you need to come up with a really breathtaking and original design. The level gets higher and higher each year. I have thought about making a run for the competition but unless I feel I have a layout that I personally feel is better than most of the top 10 last year I don't feel it's worth the effort on my part.

    How do you get such wonderfully smooth and thick pieces of driftwood? Such as the piece used in the picture on the bottom of your Making Slopes and Paths web page. I'd love to use more driftwood but it's difficult finding thicker pieces without a lot of little branches that I'd have to sand off for my betta's fins.

  • @NigelAquascaping
    @NigelAquascaping 7 років тому

    Very informative.
    So basically you make the hardscape with spiderwood and lava stones and when you like it you add some clay chips to fill all the gaps and add a layer of 2 inch soil substrate on top of it? I don't really see any soil in the scape how is this? Only in the middle after the main tree with some dwarf hair grass.
    Did you fill all the gaps in the drainage cells?

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist 7 років тому

      The cavity in the middle is made by filling up the holes available with coarse lava rock and clay chips, then a layer of substrate is added. Not all the drainage cells are filled, quite a lot of empty space below

  • @JohnnyHalcyon3D
    @JohnnyHalcyon3D 2 роки тому

    Love this tank! Couple of quick question for you if you have the time - 1; I see you're using drainage crate, do you just fill these with lava rock? I'm trying to save on ADA costs and was looking at mesh bags filled with rocks, but the drainage crate system feels easier to arrange to your liking.
    2; when you mention trying out multiple arrangements over weeks before locking it down I couldnt agree more; however how are you dealing with unglueing/un-epoxying pieces once theyve already been joined once?
    And lastly, I love the overall impression of the tank, is this enough plant material to fight algae back?
    Thanks so much!

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist 2 роки тому +1

      yes I fill them with lava chips for stability. You can leave blank spaces but the substrate may fall into it over time. 2. The glue isn't hard to break, but it leaves marks that need to be filed /scrapped off. The stronger the glue, the more marks it tends to leave. Making large changes after the tank is wet is probably the most troublesome part (but maybe worthwhile for folks doing competitions). Yea this tank has enough plant mass that algae isn't much of an issue. Also, if you are doing this style of aquacape, its mostly easy plants and light levels can be tuned way down as well, making trigger algae much less of an issue

      @@2hrAquarist Thank you for the thorough answers Dennis, I'll be making sure to grab fertilizer from you when I'm set up! In a tank like this most of the plant's arent in a substrate it looks like? Is there a way to know which can and cannot do so easily, or is it just memorization

      @@2hrAquarist Are you at all concerned with the lava chips creating an anaeronbic condition?

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist 2 роки тому

      @@JohnnyHalcyon3D no. If there is no organic matter; there is not much food for microbes, so the O2 draw is low. Besides, even if the area was deeply anaerobic, there is no downside as there are no other compounds to transform into harmful compounds. It might be different for soils with heavy sulphur content or high amount of organic material. Inert large grain substrates going anaerobic is of low concern by comparison.

      @@2hrAquarist gotcha, so does that become an issue if im looking to stack a bunch of Amazonia on top? My understanding is its very heavy on organics

    • @2hrAquarist

      Took around 3 weeks of intermittent tweaking to setup the initial hardscape. Quite a few modifications to the hardscape & plants even after planting. Couple of the larger modifications take 4-5 hours of work each... Quite a lot of time spend on hardscape work in that sense. But less time spent on pruning compared to stem heavy scapes...

    My plants are doing well growing fast. But They keep growing ugly white roots in the stems and in the center it looks like a whitr spider web of roots. Bacopa and rotala rotundifolia. Is this an issue? Is there something the plants need? Can it be prevented?

    • @2hrAquarist

      It depends ? Hard to say without looking at exact pics... sometimes plants invest more energy to grow roots when its not getting enough nutrients

      I absolutely love your scientific and not holistic approach to your videos. It's all about that chemical equilibrium and rates. I have a question. When it comes to cyanobacteria, I'm guessing causes include too much light and too little nitrate and flow? Forums gives convoluted and holistic information. My reasoning is because since it's a single-celled photosynthetic organism, it requires light and a dead zone (lack of flow) for it to settle and colonize. I only see it emerge when a tank is new (no nitrates as of yet). Could it also be from a lack of oxygen (due to lack of nitrates and other nutrients for plants) that encourages the cyano to uptake that ecological niche you created in your tank? It seems that the reaction of many people to reduce algae is to reduce nutrients, but plants are much more complex and need more nutrients compared to algaes and cyano. I wanna believe its because the simplicity algae and cyano have evolved to absorb trace amounts of nutrients that simply wouldn't suffice for plants. This is based purely off of my education and experience. Thank you so much for your time, but if you cannot respond to this, I completely understand. We all have lives haha! ~
      That's the beauty of aquarium keeping to me; it's like trying to replicate a slice of the earth and its chemical rates to each biome. No matter how extreme you make the parameters, theres always an algae or bacteria that'll gladly fill in that niche. It's chemical art. :)

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist 7 років тому +1

      From observation, I'd say cyano often comes from poor oxygen, high organics and/or decaying material lying around. Low NO3 can be a cause but I see that as a side factor... as in what you said, if NO3 is too low, plant growth may lack vigor and the advantage shifts to algae.

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist 7 років тому +1

      I think poor O2 does contribute to it, general tank cleanliness as well
