By chance, a few hours ago I discovered Barbara Walker's work through the latest video published on the Tate channel! Then I found out about the Windrush Scandal and the tremendous tribute that this artist is paying to the victims. I also think she deserves to win the prize!
Thanks to you, I was able to know that the documents we see as the background for the portraits are hand-drawn representations.
Very good! Thanks!
Thank you, again, for watching. Let's hope she wins on the 5th December!
Pity she didn't win!
I know. Disappointed with that. @@kmaggs7804
I agree. @@kmaggs7804
Thanks for the film George and your reply. I think I was probably a bit unfair to the artist I just worry the art world in general sometimes thinks representation equates to solution. Glad to hear it fired you up. A good work to feature in the week of Suellas departure 😁 looking forward to your film on the Ofilli
Is the turner price awarded based on the career of an artist or onlythe showing we are seeing in this video? I find all the exhibitions a bit underwhelling for something with the status of the turner prize
It is awarded for an exhibition or other work by a British artist from within the previous 12 months, so not their whole career. I agree, this was a relatively underwhelming year. Not a great representation of British art overall!
thank you@@artgalleryexplorer
❤ Barbara Walker
Cool! Definitely my favourite.
Who will win according to you
Jesse Darling. I want Barabra Walker to win but feel it might be Jesse. We will see.
From this brief view I agree that the top floor seems to have the most interesting work. I'm going to pick Darling as I like his materials and ambitious scale of the questions he's exploring. Undoubtedly Walker's work is important and accomplished but lacks a level of push back for me in that it stands as memorial to a scandal that has never been truly rectified. The compensation scheme wasn't properly administered and has been closed now. This work is in danger of offering an aesthetic compensation that might foreclose the need for ongoing campaigning. That's a perennial issue with political art though and does not detract from this talented artist.
Interesting and thank you for watching, once again. Darling is certainly exploring big issues. His video is actually really interesting too. I totally get what you are saying about Windrush - a total scandal and disgrace that it has not been formally rectified in a satisfactory way. I prefer to see the work as a permanent reminder of the shameful treatment as opposed to aesthetic compensation - it fired me up again. let's hope it is that and the works (or at least the ones not rubbed off at the end of the show) are not closeted away somewhere. You know, I viewed Chris Ofili's 'Requiem at Tate Britain and it carries out a similar function. I'll cover that this week.
do you think jesse darling won because it was less political and of an affront to the government than barbara walker's work? It seems to me she should have won. I love jesse darling's work, but he's the darling of the art world at the moment. some of his previous video work is much stronger.
I think your second point is why he won - he's very fashionable currently. It almost seemed pre ordained. Like you, I enjoy his work. Walker's Turner piece is quieter but, in my opinion, more powerful. It has stayed with me. I think part of the issue with Darling's display is that the gallery was too small to fully get a big impact. Thank you for watching.
utter, utter toss
Art really is crap. I could take a crap on the middle of the room and say it to represents humanity and nature and despair.
Not a vintage Turner Prize showing in my opinion - and it has just been announced that Jesse Darling has won! Hopefully you didn't think that Barbara Walker was as you say? She was my favourite.
Sadly, it has already been done.
I know - my favourite did not win. :(@@andofeverything
