- Listen to the conversations between ATC and 2 De Havilland Otter Pilots. ATC gives takeoff clearance to the 2 Otters at the stunning CYHC in Vancouver BC, Canada. Have a look around the harbour. The scenery at CYHC is truly breathtaking. The Port of Vancouver is the largest Port in Canada and the fourth largest in North America. The Vancouver Harbour is a constant flurry of activity. We flew on this plane July 2023 after an Alaska cruise it was a beautiful trip to Seattle would definitely recommend them to everyone

Many years back I was regularly operating a corporate jet to Vancouver during the winter so the owners could go skiing at Whistler. The weather was most often close to minima so nothing to see on the way in. On one flight we arrived on a beautiful clear day and I was struck by the the awesome beauty of the area, being as I had never seen it before.
For something to do while on the ground (aside from working on my alcohol habit) I would go down and watch the float planes, feeling envious and thinking I would happily trade job and airplane.
@mitseraffej5812, thanks for your kind, engaging comment and support, I am truly grateful. The weather in Vancouver can be close to minima many days in the winter. My ex husband(still a friend) was a commercial pilot, we lived in Victoria, he commuted to Vancouver to pick up his plane. Many day were pretty sketchy with fog or a low ceiling. I too had an alcohol habit, gave it up and never looked back. When I go on a video shoot to Vancouver, I spent many hours at the harbour, it never gets boring. The Canadian Flag Otter is ident C-FODH and is serial #3. It is the oldest Otter still flying. It's awesome that Harbour Air owns this beautiful machine. C-FODH was manufactured in 1952. Thanks for this video i really enjoyed watching it. It brings back great memories of when i used to visit Vancouver Island when my parents lived in Nanaimo. I have flown with Harbour Air a few times and also with Baxter Air from both downtown Vancouver and Harbour Air's terminal by the International airport. I love flying on float planes as it is such a thrill. Look forward to watching more of your shows.

@Allmusic956, I sincerely thank you for your kind words and support. I have only been narrating my videos for a few months, as was suggested by a few of my regular viewers. I've taken a lot of time to research my seaplane subjects and to hopefully fit my voiceovers in a timely spot. This UA-cam journey is the biggest learning curve of my life and I'm loving every minute. I haven't had a lot of feedback on my voice, I'm grateful for your positive encouragement. Not that many years ago we could board a seaplane in Seattle's Lake Union (10 minutes from our house) for $25.00 one-way and be in Victoria BC. Have dinner at the Empress and fly back that night or stay for a few days

Hi Corrie I am not there now. But know the area. Minute 12:49 has the West Bowl of Cypress Bowl ski hill. There is a bit of a snow patch before that but that is an opening on the summit that is not the ski area.

@@leftcoastcorrie On the North Shore mountains, the furthest west is Cypress, then as you move eastward you have Grouse Mountain (which is basically just north of Harbour Air) and then further up the inlet is Seymour. You can kind of see the base (residential area) of Seymour in your video, but it isn't really recognizable as a "ski hill" since you are zoomed in quite a bit looking at the planes. As you look out over Stanley Park, at the 12:13 minute mark, you can see "The Lions" or "Twin Sisters" from Squamish.

I just found your channel. I immediately recognized the area and company from the thumbnail, as this is my hometown. You did such a great job with the voice over that I thought you were at first in the "departure lounge". 🤗Then I thought you were the flight services attendant in the first plane ... and was confused when you were suddenly in the second plane. 🤔 I only clued in during the last couple of minutes. 🤣 Great use of the phonetic alphabet on the aircraft idents.
I'm not too familiar with float plane operations, but I find it interesting that the communications surrounding their identification do not mention their Transport Canada registry. For example, they don't say "C-GHAR", but identify with "308" (the company marking on the side of the aircraft) to tower. I know that ATC doesn't really care, as they just need the location/altitude data that is provided with the squawk code. There must be some kind of familiarity with the float plane business where they just got into a "shorthand", and I find that interesting.

My UA-cam channels have been the biggest learning curve in my life and I love every minute. As you mention, how ATC and the pilots communicate took me a while to figure out. Harbour Air's "nickname" is Harbour Express, followed by the company fleet number. I further figured out that the first number in the "fleet number" 2 or 3 or 6 is how De Havilland identifies their aircraft. A Beaver is a DHC-2, Otter DHC-3, Twin Otter DHC-6. The Grand Caravan's fleet number starts with 1. Im not involved in aviation, I'm just a passionate enthusiast. I am grateful you found the lounge and hope you will return. Best....Corrie

We call the letters on the tail the “tail numbers.” In the USA, N-Numbers. When an airplane is manufactured it’s called Certified for Flight or Airworthy. If you going to do this then learn the lingo or “Plane Speak.” You’ll impress the heck out of your viewers if you know all terms. Talk to some float plane pilots - they’ll help you out.

@@leftcoastcorrie The aviation community is a great community. Take your camera and go down to the launch ramp and see if you can talk to a pilot. Ask him/her to give you a tour of their airplane and ask them the terms they use. Never hurts to ask and the worse that can happen is they say "no." Good luck.

My ex-husband is a pilot and was the last airplane to depart Vancouver that fateful day. As you know, it changed everything about aviation, security is very different today and you can't even get past the gates if you don't have a ticket to fly. It's the same at the harbour, the general public isn't allowed airside without the proper credentials. You don't get a takeoff *CLEARANCE*. You get a discretionary takeoff (i.e. Pilot makes the decision whether to take off or wait)

You cannot take off without a clearance, period. You can, at pilot's discretion, elect to reject to take off once given clearance.

In the 70s I travelled all of Canada and was going to Nanaimo to work. I decided to take the float
plane from Van harbour. The flight was ok but when we landed in Nanaimo harbour it was extremely windy and the waves washed up and over the fuselage when we went down into the troughs. When we got to the dock they put a walkway from the plane to the dock but the plane was rocking in the waves so bad it was difficult to gain access to it and I was young. One very senior little later had to have the 1st Officer literally hold his arms around her to get her on the dock. She must have been from the US east coast because she said very loudly to him “ never again, never again” in a New York type accent. I was funny but I was also nervous upon landing. If I recall the aircraft was a Twin Otter on floats.

I'm not sure how far away we are from seeing the entire fleet of Beavers converted to electric. I have mixed feelings on the idea of battery operated planes, I guess time will tell. I'm not opposed to new technology, I'm just a lover of nostalgia, and the sound of the radial engine revs me up. I'm with you, I'd like to have a ride in one too. Best...Corrie

I believe Pratt & Whitney engines are manufactured in the United States and De Havilland is manufactured in Canada. I hope a regular visitor to the lounge will give a better answer than mine. @stevedemoe1359, thanks Steve for your kind words and support, I am truly grateful. It would be awesome to see the Grumman Goose come and go! I have friends that restore aircraft and I've seen them working on a Goose in the past. It is a magnificent machine. Hardy is a long drive from Victoria, I'm sure it would be worth the effort and adventure. The Martin Mars will be coming to Victoria sometime in the Fall, it will be on permanent display at the BC Aviation Museum. I will capture that for sure. I'm going to catch the Snowbirds in Comox on May 18th and can't wait. The Snowbirds will be a challenge to film, I'm up for the challenge. Time will tell how I do. I presume that if the plane was built in the 50s, it was not with a turbine? When was that conversion done?
@michaelhoffmann2891, thanks Michael for your engaging question and support. You are correct, on Otter originally had a radial engine. I've never seen an Otter with a radial, I hope to one day. The Otter started getting Vazar Turbine Conversions in 1989. Harbour Air has updated all of their Otters to the Vazar Turbines and with the Panavue window conversions. @@leftcoastcorrie I saw many a Twin Otter on skis, back when I worked in Antarctica. Amazing, rugged airplanes. They fly when other planes are grounded.

What happened to those radial motors?
@davidfeller1021, thanks David for your engagement, I hope I give the correct answer. Most Otters have been converted to a Vazar Turbine engine. As Harbour Air acquires an Otter, it gets the conversion, if it hasn't been already. I'm sure over time, the Beaver will head the same way, although I hope not. I love the radial engines. That's the airframe. Viking Air has the license now. These planes are new but old. Like many of the Bell 206 Helicopters.
@alansmith6793, Alan, I moved to Victoria about 7 years ago. Spend most of my life in Sidney and North Saanich, including my career in finance. As a kid, our home overlooked the Pat Bay airport, I think that's where my love of aviation started. It was a really big deal when Nils got the license to re-produce De Havilland parts and planes. When the aircraft are not turbo and fully loaded the flight path is just over Lions Gate Bridge. Very near here. It can feels a bit laboured.

@@leftcoastcorrie I'm being sarcastic. It was a publicity stunt as far as I could figure. Just to show it could be done. The Beaver has been returned to it's regular state. Could be wrong on this, if so please do a video on it's whereabouts.
Was a fabulous demonstration in my opinion. But the weight of the batteries will need to come down before it’s practical

@swiftadventurer, you are correct! An Otter's original power was a 450-kW (600 hp) Pratt & Whitney R-1340 geared radial. I have not seen an Otter with an original engine, I would love to.
