  • The Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway is the worlds highest cog railroad and third highest railway of any kind. Its trains first reached the summit of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak in 1891. Today, it operates modern diesel railcars. On special occasions, trains are pushed uphill by antique diesel streamliners or an old steam locomotive. It is extremely steep using special track to enable trains to climb to the summit in only 9 miles. This clip shows snow plowing techniques from the earliest steam locomotive pushed wedge plow to the diesel rotary snow plow. The entire 39 minute program Pikes Peak By Rail is now posted here as well.
