    Hello - I am actually not very skilled at double-tonguing myself. I am fairly lucky in that my single tonguing works pretty quickly, especially through using the system outlined in this video. If you want to learn some double-tonguing technics, I suggest that you check out Michael Rusinek's video: Michael Rusinek on How to Develop Rapid Articulation. It is here on UA-cam. He sounds great with his double tonguing, working a "Ta-Ka" articulation. - Michelle

    Hi there, I'm a flute player in the UK and I wanted to say how great I think your videos are. Even though they're for clarinet players I'm going to sign up for your newsletter for more of your great ideas. Thanks.

      Leila Carpenter Thanks for the kind words Leila. Many of my fingering or breathing tricks I have learned from other woodwind players, so I think sharing ideas across instruments is really helpful.

    Having alot of issues been doing tonguing wrong this entire time for 2 years. Was doing thay air thing in between each note....
    Was only noticed when I got a new teacher so I'm now going back to basics. Your videos are helping trying to undo this habit

      Hi Victoria, It is one of the most common habits for all wind players to change the air stream with each note. It sure makes a difference with clarinet tone to change this habit. I hope it works for you, and that you enjoy the results once it starts to feel easier for you.

    This was a great video. Thank you very much, even though I know everything that is on this video. Another technique to coordinate tongue with fingers that I find helpful is first play the passage legato, only using the fingers. You can practice with different rhythms to establish control over the fingers. Once this gets perfected, move the fingers half as slow but for every fingering tongue twice per note. So the tongue is moving at normal speed but the fingers move half as slow. So there are two repeated tonguings for every note. After this is perfected you play fingers and tongue the normal speed and it should coordinate.
    I also wanted to thank you for making instructional videos like this free and open to the public.

    Hi - Is this the Mozart Concerto that you are referring to? If so, Mozart staccato is often very lyrical, almost like singing. Many players do not use stop-tonguing for this style of music, but an air staccato. It is tricky to keep good air support, but it gives a more gentle articulation. There are many kinds of staccato in the world! If you are looking at a different piece, please let me know. - Michelle

    Hi Michelle,
    I enjoyed your videos!
    Just joined the clarinet mentors community.
    I was looking for exercise 4 - the staccato exercise - the overture you are demonstrating in this video. I didn't see a "resources" section in the website.
    Thanks for your help!

    This is really helpful! This skill is necessary for basically everything Bach, especially the Gigues. I'm working on Bach Gigue from Partita No. 3 in E (BWV 1006) for clarinet and its really hard because its fast, and because there are a lot of staccato to legato phrases. My fingers get super out of sync during the staccato but during the legato they always go back to normal, so I really needed this video!

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  10 років тому

      Daniel McLean I hope this helps. The part about moving your fingers to the next note during the silence between notes feels really odd, but really helps to get things bad in sync. It sounds like a fun piece!

    I need help. When I tongue long passages my tongue bleeds. What am I doing wrong? Where are you supposed to place your tongue in order to effectively articulate but not damage the tip of your tongue?!

    Hey :)
    I need help. I have been playing clarinet since around 11 years old (now I'm 18) and I have never been tonguing. Now I realised that I have been playing wrong and I need help. When I tongue, there is this weird "thoo thoo" sound as if saliva is being spit out of a straw. I've been researching about what I did wrong, but I cannot find a solution. Please help me, thank you :)

      Hopefully some of these tonguing videos on UA-cam will help you. It sounds as though your tongue may be hitting the reed a bit too low. Try and aim your tongue very near the tip of the reed. That will give a more distinct sound. If you put the mouthpiece in your mouth and speak "too-too", your tongue will naturally hit the best part of the reed with the best part of your tongue. It is also possible that you may be touching the reed with the middle of your tongue, rather than close to the tip of your tongue. Again, as awkward as it feels, speaking will help to get the feel for this. I hope that helps.

    Hello Michelle my band teacher says that I tongue some of the notes. How can I practice tonguing all the notes. Thank You!

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  8 років тому

      +Anthony Cabrera Hi Anthony, you can practise tonguing on one easy note (like open G) just to notice what it feels like when your tongue hits the reed. Speaking into your clarinet also helps, since your tongue will hit the reed if you form an embouchure and speak the word Tea. If you are getting it some of the time, you are on the right track. You just need to practise some warmups where your focus is on your tongue and it will start to feel natural more of the time.

    Hi Michelle,
    I recently began doubling on clarinet (saxophone is my main instrument) and I've found that when I tongue above the break, I'll often squeak, and my fingers will be come uncoordinated with my tongue. This isn't the case with below the break, because I can articulate with different methods quite quickly with no squeaks. If I play very slowly though, I'll usually be able to focus on getting no squeak. Do you recommend any way of learning to articulate more quickly above the break?
    Thanks!

    Does anyone know how to actually improve tonguing? I am fine on my low register from open g to the bottom e. But from the B upwards, tonguing doesn't come out nearly as well and even though most of the time I can get the note out with tonguing there is always a weird noise every time before each note in my high register. The sound is really similar when you're trying to get a high note and it goes to the awkward middle tone but when I slur the notes come out great. I am practicing for university auditions and the pieces I'm doing are
    Required: Study no. 5 by Alfred Uhl
    Brahms Sonata in F minor movement 1
    Free choice: Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A major 1st movement
    I hope someone can give me advice on anything for my problem or just in general for these pieces. Sorry to bother you all and thank you for your time.

    I play bass clarinet, and I am fairly decent, but I hit the roof of my mouth it hasn't effected me badly. I don't know how to fix it, and I don't have the time to relearn the instrument.

    Hey
    I play clarinet and i have some trobles with stacatto in altissimo register specialy E and F. For example i start practice stacatto in E and then sounds A. :/ how can i practice to fix it.? Thank you from Colombia :)

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  9 років тому

      Geraldine Osorio If you are playing too high, it means that you are 'biting" down a bit on the reed. Sometimes rounding in your corners more firmly will help. You can also practise "huffing" a high E using only your air, no tonguing at all, just as an exercise. This helps you to figure out the air speed and embouchure that you need. Then you can add the tongue back in.

    Okay so. You obviously know the clarinet concerto mvmt 3. The Staccato tonguing in the first run in all professional played pieces it sound like legato slurring! I'm so confused its not making sense

    Hi Michelle, i am trying to learn staccato for a long time now and i always have the same problem. The technique itself feels and sounds right, but after 3 or 4 quick staccato tones spit gets into the mouthpiece and it starts to sound spitty/wet. Obviously the contact of the tongue to the mouthpiece transfers spit into the clarinet. Can you help me out? What am i doing wrong?

    • @emmfoss
      @emmfoss 4 роки тому

      this is late and idk if you still need help but keep your corners firmed back and suck your spit out of the mouthpiece before you play and it’ll help eliminate spit entering the mouthpiece

    I have a question. My tonguing in low register is good, but in the upper register before the tone comes out i hear something like a hit in the reed and because of that my staccato in the upper register is very slow.(I've heard that it's called a duck sindrome, or something like that). What should I do to fix that?

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  10 років тому

      Filip Egeric This is very common for many clarinetists. It is usually because either your reed is soft, or your air is not blowing constantly. The exercise in this video will help. You might also want to look at these two videos and see if they help: ua-cam.com/video/3Z1aN7gfkNE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/nwrcZU2B6xQ/v-deo.html

    Sometimes, in fast notes I tend to tongue like a "takataka" kind of thing, instead of the usual "too too," is that acceptable?
