    Thanks Ashlee. So happy to have found your videos. Very well done. Our school is having loads of training, but too much information crammed into each session without this much depth. Your videos are always fantastic. Thank you for sharing. You made a comment about how you can't do fancy things in Canvas. You actually can do a tremendous amount of fancy things although not everyone has the knowledge to do so. With a little studying about HTML/CSS you'd be amazed at how many fancy layouts you can create in the HTML editor. It's true that Canvas has limited us, but there are creative ways to figure things out. I've been able to create some pretty fancy layouts for my college music classes.

      If I had a penny for every time someone said this to me I would be a rich woman! I’ve always said Canvas should hire me to launch a free training program on how to actually use their product from an educators perspective with step by step tutorials. It’s like getting a product without a manual on how to set it up right? Seems silly to me. Anywho glad the video was helpful. I have an entire canvas tutorials playlist on my channel. @AshleeEspinosa Can I make a home page and modules (pre planning) if I haven't been assigned a course to teach yet? My canvas is pretty much a blank canvas lol. Also, you keep emphasizing "create pages" and "new pages"... In order to create a syllabus would that be a "page" or should we create that under the "syllabus tab"?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Pre planning is super helpful. You'll need a course assigned to you first or you might ask your admin if you can be allowed a blank canvas class to practice/prep in and then you can export and import that work into the class once it's assigned to you. Create the syllabus under the syllabus tab. Think of syllabus as a page that's somewhat already set up for you within canvas. I posted a video on syllabus in canvas here ua-cam.com/video/-2E-5LKCauk/v-deo.html

    Thanks for the video! Something I've noticed while playing around in Canvas and creating a homepage is that the title I create in Pages ends up disappearing when using that page as the homepage. For example, when you created your page, you wrote "Welcome!" for the title. However, once you selected that page to be your homepage, the "Welcome!" title was nowhere to be found.

      Yes, this frustrates me too. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and I have no idea why. It use to always save that title but for some reason lately it does not. Maybe a tech glitch with Canvas? Hopefully they update that soon.

      Personally, I do not prefer to use buttons in Canvas too much because it can confuse the students as to where you want them to go and when and in what order. Use modules for this instead to create the flow of the day, week or unit or even topic.

      I don't believe you can see a full breakdown of how long they took on each question. Not yet at least but Canvas is constantly updating. I've noticed that in some K-12 districts they have created Sandboxes to practice in or get started creating your courses for a foundation to work from. You should be able to copy/import course content with that sandbox now into your actual courses. I did a video on copying course content and also one on exporting and importing content if that's helpful.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      I've been hearing this from many other people recently as well. I'm trying to come up with a solution but the only thing I can think of is to create your own content and upload directly to Canvas which does take up a ton of space depending on how much your district pays for to house content in the cloud. If you're using documentaries or video clips from series or educational content then try their websites to see if they have it posted so youk can link to the website. Some educational websites are posting video content directly on their page it's just discoering them that takes time and finding the resources. sorry I"m not able to offer more help just yet.

      I'm not sure why a profile doesn't show up. I"ve heard that yet from other people but Canvas is being implemented in so many institutions quickly that there are multiple factors that could be the reason. Is she using a new account that was just created for her? Is she on a sandbox or practice account? Has she had her students loading into her courses?

    I like your videos better than my district trainings. A few things.
    1. My rich text editor does not have all the same options as yours. I followed step by step in making my page, and my choices were slightly different.
    2. I cannot center my embedded youtube video no matter what. :(
    Otherwise, I am so much further after your two videos than after even the self-paced Canvas training and 2 zooms with teachers from my school. THANK YOU.

      I'm so glad these videos have been helpful for you! I've been hearing similar feedback from other people as well that their version of rich text editor is slightly different and I think that is dependent upon the school/uni/institution. I'm not sure why it varies yet even though it's the same platform. I wonder why you can't center a video. That's a new one to me. I"m so glad that you are moving further in your course creation though! Thanks for the wonderful feedback.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      try this one. It's free, easy, quick, simple to make one. Not super fancy but quick! You can either get the code to embed if you know how to work with HTML + CSS or you can quickly download the image and upload it into canvas as a image file and then link it to the page you want to connect it to as a CTA. www.clickminded.com/button-generator/
      I've heard of some districts starting to block youtube. That's a little frustrating to me because then it forces the teach to upload content right into Canvas and video files take up a load of space and if the district didn't purchase enough cloud space then you could easily fill up quickly with large files like videos. It's much easier to upload your videos to youtube and then quickly link it in canvas. It just makes it more challenging for faculty at this extreme time to get online fast and without much training.

    My university recently moved from Blackboard to Canvas and I am not only disappointed but extremely frustrated. Is there a more difficult, non-user friendly LMS? I have used several different systems of course delivery and I have not found anything more frustrating than Canvas. I never once had to consult a UA-cam video or instruction manual for Blackboard, everything was logical and easy to use for the low tech information user. It seems Canvas is only accessible for people with graduate degrees in computer science. Sorry for the rant, folks....

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  3 роки тому

      Totally understand your frustration here. I think it might be a personal preference on which platform you like and prefer better. Some people hate it and some people love it. What I've discovered is that the most positive part about everyone migrating to Canvas this year is that the students will understand the platform when they transition from HS to college or from community college to university since everyone is mostly using the same LMS these days. I hope these videos help and I've got an entire playlist series of Canvas tutorials if that helps as well. Hang in there fellow teacher and feel free to rant away anytime. We all need a space for that these days! 😀
