      If you didn't win I can heartily recommend the Pinecil and the Sequre nano 60. (I bought one when I too did not win, but the Pinecil is a $25 version of the TS100 with the power versatility of the TS80 too. Excellent soldering irons. )

    first time i’ve seen inside an instrument cluster. very informative. i wonder how much component similarity there is between different vehicle manufacturers. surprised to see the multiple stepper motor used - makes sense for large dial analog speedo & tachometer. the one plug interface makes for easy changeover. i hate to guess cost of unit. impressed by your fault finding/fix using visual cues, simple voltage & current tests only (no schematic).

    A line to ground usually indicates a flyback diode for handling a sudden voltage spike. The kind of spike that also takes out display chips. I've had one fail on my Peavey Tube Amp and it basically did the same thing - registered as a short to ground. This era of Chevy is full of weird electrical problems, particularly in the charging circuit. I wonder if the alternator went full throttle. Alternatively, I wonder if he jumped it off a 24v system like a tractor rig....
    That's a pretty cool little iron. I bet you could get some quick field repairs done with a USB battery bank. If I get selected, I'd gladly add it to my arsenal, but if not, I'll add it to my shopping list.

    Where does this cluster get it the data for the actual voltage gauge? Is it from the PCM, the BCM, or is it reading it from the bus on the cluster?

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  5 місяців тому

      For this year range, the BCM takes the voltage reading and sends it through the bus to the cluster.

    • @evracer
      @evracer 5 місяців тому

      @@jeffescortlx that's annoying. I am trying to pervert this cluster into another application with the PCM ...but don't want to install the BCM just so I can get the volt gauge to work...I am planning to use the speedo as a tach and the fuel gauge as engine oil temperature. Didn't see VOLTS being the hangup considering there's so many other places it could be pulled from!

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  5 місяців тому

      @@evracer with the full size GMs, The voltage reading was taken at the instrument cluster up to 2002. 2003 is when they switched to taking the voltage reading at the BCM.
      I guess it's possible you could just throw in the BCM and apply power and ground and the bus wire, that might be enough to get a functioning voltage. I'm just not sure if the BCM is going to be upset and try to trigger a cel with everything else unplugged.

    • @evracer
      @evracer 5 місяців тому

      @@jeffescortlx this is in a racecar so it could just add to the list. I got into this as an auto tech replacing s
      Steppers and lights and only recently with this project started trying to really do some oddball stuff. Racecars have no use for a speedometer and have a need for a big tach. I intend to do this by signal swapping if possible. Everything is from an 05 Express and want to keep it that way...but I notice there are no vss wires in the plug like there is on the truck clusters so I hope I can just pin them and feed it from the PCM's engine speed output. Racecars don't need a fuel gauge either, so a second "coolant" temp sensor will go in the engine oil pan and just be connected to the PCM's fuel level input. It looks like the resistance range between the coolant temp sensor and the fuel level sensor are both 40-250 ohm. If I can't get the mph to tach swap to work through wiring, I will have to see if I can do it somehow with IPC hammer.

Could it have originally been some sort of protection device and was somehow replaced by the person who previously worked on the board by the wrong part? You mentioned that it seemed to have been worked on before, unless I mis understood. If they were trying to find the original number part is would have been easy to get a mis marked part or they just took a WAG.

    I've been meaning to ask. I've mentioned before that I repair classic car instruments but word of mouth gets around and I occasionally get an electronic cluster to look at. All I can really do is check for dry joints or anything that might be obvious but I can't power these things up. Now, this is Australia and there are maybe a handful of people who can repair these and their turn around time is in the months, if at all.
    My question is, where do you find the information on pin-outs in order to safely power these up ? I have to tell a customer that all I can do is check for mechanical failure like dry joints etc but I can't do electronic work because I refuse to take the chance to power up the cluster and damage it.
    It's kind of frustrating because I'd like to help the customer but I'm limited in what I can do. The customer can't get any satisfaction from the dealership because even they don't have the technical knowledge to repair or reset odometers in a replacement cluster and giving the cluster to a repair guy can take months.
    Many clusters too are coded to the vehicle which means going to a salvage yard won't help either. Anyway, sorry about the long comment.
