So today is December 19, 2023 I built a bow with my great nephew, he's only 4 and is crazy about archery ,so we built him a 20lbs draw short bow ,I just got him to come in fron shooting the bow ,he sat Down to eat and fell a sleep in his chair ,it was a good day
I have learned so much about Bow building and Bushcraft from people like you who share their knowledge, and take the time on detail. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge. Respect.
Very impressive! I seriously doubt there’s time enough in this life for me to attain your knowledge much less skill at building such incredible instruments, much less learning to wield one with any real mastery. Lucky for me, there’s still a great deal of joy to be had watching and admiring the skill and talent you have acquired in your time. Thank you for this!
Don't overthink it. Just go out, get some wood and make a bow. I made my first out of oak, using only a Mora knife and some sandpaper. A complete monster, hideous as can be, but it shoots! I really enjoyed making it.
My wife says you’re another bad influence haha. I hunt the gratification of harvesting with the hand built. You’re rad, the bows are rad, the instruction, the hunts, survival… all rad! Keep ‘em coming she want a bow now!
My boyfriend got me into shooting bows and watching your videos. I went from showing horses to bow shooting. The making of the bow is pretty awesome. I’d love to own one of your bows one day. Keep making videos as they’re inspiring.
When i was at school many years ago my favorite class was woodwork, i love working with wood. Unfortunately for other reasons ive not got back into this passion i had as a kid, but watching these as im learning archery at the moment just inspires me to get back into it, getting the necessary tools, preferably none electric and then one day making my own bow. I cant imagine the feeling of shooting a bow you have made. Fantastic content.
I wish I knew someone like you. I’ll be turning 67 in a few months. With the state of affairs I’ve begun prepping. I’ve stocked up on food, pack backpacks for winter and summer. But haven’t learned bushcraft yet.
Osage Orange (A.K.A. Hedge) is the bomb for bows - but I only built one because the wood is ridiculously resinous and hard, and I completely used up several draw knives in the process. Going to watch your video with great interest.
I always enjoy watching your hunts and your bow builds. I'm impressed with your bowyer skills using minimal hand tools! Please keep making videos for us to enjoy. Thanks.
Wow, just blown away at the skill you have in using woodwork tools. Most definitely going to join your patron when i get paid next, because i would love one of youre bows. Absolutely would be a bow for life.
There´s something really satisfying in watching you work, you make it look so easy. Soon I´ll give it a go, try my hand at an ash stave I acquired. Reading your handbook atm, and soaking in your vids. Thanks Clay, thanks a lot.
Beautiful, love the simplicity in the design. I'm using what I've learned from you and a couple others for my handles.. I'll be sanding and tillering all day.. Thanks :)
This is unreal, mate. I just got a new set of card scrapers and wondered what I’d ever do with the curved ones!! Well, guess what? Thanks for another awesome build vid mate. I can’t wait to give this a go 🤙🏼
If the SHTF scenario everybody keeps buggin' on about really happens, a man with your skills would be invaluable. If there are no more bullets available for guns , for protection &/or hunting, making quality bows and arrows would make for quite an asset anywhere around the world. Old school is pretty cool and at times even better than modern equivalents in my opinion. Your bows are like works of art and I think anyone would be fortunate to have one, well done Bowyer Hayes.
Hi Clay... I think it's been a few years since I started commenting on your channel...(one of the best on bow-making out there I think for its concise brevity and clarity within the scope of information covered)...Today, after my 40 years on only traditional woodworking and now teaching it, I have to share an observation that I went back and checked on...and that is your tool style and usage... In the beginning, you presented with a clear ability in tools use within this craft...but in this video, for the first time (at least to me) you demonstrated a relationship with the tools that demonstrated clear extension of body, mind, muscle affinity with powerful but succinct execution of the tools with each draw or strike...Extremely well done, and displayed, with the results of a wonderful bow created...Thanks for an outstanding channel...!!!
@ClayHayes_ Pass the gift forward Brother...your videos are more than enough and the a possible chance to meet someday if the Creator wills it...Blessings, j
Absolutely beautiful!! I've gotta find myself an Aussie wood stave "one day" and it looks like it'll have to be Acacia Magnium. And some of your book's!!
Acacia , is my next go. Used spotted gum sapling, was short, about 25inch draw failed after 20 shots, pretty sure I overdrew it. Yellow box worked too short 300 plus arrows, it's cracked but does still shoot, my fault again shortened it from 68inch to 62, won't do that again, Acacia is my next go to
Been intrigued by hollow limb. The Comanche utilized this on horse bows as well. South at Stalker stickbows does this now with lam bows. There is solid science to support its effectiveness 100%. Now on with the video!

Also, much respect for using almost exclusively traditional methods; there's something I like very much about the idea of using maybe 4-6 Hand tools(could fit in a bag) and a suitable piece of wood to make a weapon
