    I just got my work to agree to install two split ( dual handle ) chargers.
    Just 50amp each that splits to 25amp but it's a start.
    Where I live that was a small miracle in itself ( political ignorance ).

    • @JimBronson
      @JimBronson 19 днів тому

      Split 50 amp is ok if it's free. We have a nearby outdoor mall that has chargers like that and they bill by the hour. If someone uses the other connector you're only getting like 3kwh to the car and they still charge you the same. It's horrible. I will only charge there if I'm desperate.

    Thanks for your video. I just got my Rivian and was playing the around-town charging game until I could get my home wall charger installed. I think I will still hit some of the free charging places around town when I have time. There is a L2 6kW that is 2-3 blks from work. So I drive my truck there during my lunch break (if the weather is nice) and let it charge. And then there is a DCFC 1.5 miles from home that charges at 50kW. For Evergy in NE KS the standard plan is ~8.29c/kW 24/7 and the Nights and Weekend plan is peak 4-8p 22c/kW, off peak 6a-4p & 8p-12a 6.4c/kW and upter off peak 12a-6a 3.2c/kW. It amazes me how different the residential rates are.

      Home charging is the key. I would not recommend an EV to anyone who doesn’t have home charging unless they fully understand what they are getting into.

  • @JimBronson
    @JimBronson 19 днів тому +3

    Wow your electricity costs more than double what mine does down here in Texas on a rural co-op. As for charging at work, it's not free but they don't mark it up from the local utility rate (Austin Energy municipal) either so it ends up being around .11-.12 per KWH and I think that's pretty fair. I can charge up our Mach-E for $2-$3. I just got my Lightning in December and I haven't taken it to the office yet.

    Getting free juice is a fun game but home charging is so cheap it’s usually not worth the hassle. Even at 23 cents you still save under a grand. (Not counting your “what if I had to exclusively DC charge) Plus, locals using community (not work) charging to save 50 cents clogs up charging for people who might be in from out of town and need the charge.
    That being said, glad your work offers such a nice perk.

    Bought a Chevy Bolt, put up a DIY 3kw solar gas station, got an expensive Golf cart that now takes no fuel for my usage. 17k invested total. For the buck could have got a good used gas car for quite a bit less money....but it was an experiement I had the time/money to invest. If anyone really cares about money, these EV are not the way to go, but I still like mine.

      If you compare apples to apples my EV F-150 is significantly less expensive than my pervious gas F-150. If you are just saying can I buy and operate any gas vehicle vs any electric vehicle and all I care about is lowest cost, than you are 100% correct gas will be cheaper.

      Disagree on multiple levels - it's a lot cheaper than gas for us, and the average new gas vehicle costs $48K these days. Sure you can buy some beater used gas car and operate it cheap but eventually it will catch up with you.

    Nothing wrong with trying to save money charging but public charging is a GRIND in general. L2 charging which is usually the free places @6-7kw (if you’re lucky), is a complete waste of time unless you can give it 6-8 hrs). This video should say if your work wants to offer free DCFC you can save thousands.

    • @Mkg254
      @Mkg254  28 днів тому

      I don’t know about a complete waste of time. I charge at a 6kW while I have dinner often and I will get 10-12% which is about 30-40 miles of free range. That’s not nothing. But I do get your point.

    • @epg423
      @epg423 16 днів тому

      Spend 30 bucks on dinner and save 1 dollar on electricity. Better than nothing but maybe cooking at home and charging at home in off peak hours elecrricity is essentially free where i live 3 cents a kwh so a full charge is maybe 2 bucks or maybe 5 in a big car. So 35 miles of range is only like 40 cents to me so kinda a waste but if dont have low costs it could be a bit more useful. Unless you have solar and its free at that point then thats another great option. If you dont have solar and have high costs then maybe charging at dinner could make some sense for sure

    Could you in theory plug a boat 4 bank charger up to the Lightning while it charges at a hotel? Also, how mad would a hotel be if you just pull up with your boat still on the trailer, IF there is room to do so lol...

    Its not free - but I discovered that my local NJ township sponsors 2 subsidized Charge point 6kw chargers outside our local library. The cost is only $1.00 per hour (4 hour max) - which is cheaper than charging on my level 2 home charger.

      savings yes!! atlest 2760 dollars with my calculation of my buget for my ev compare to the ice car that I had for gas and power.
      I made back my registration cost back with in the month of not having to get gas. My EV cost under 20000. I went to get a ice car but ended up with the EV. I dont trade in my cars so that was not a issue for me. I only pay 72 dollars a month for electric bill house and car. went from paying 230 a month is gas to 16.00 in the last year for supper charging. plus no more oil leaks. my last ice car was in the shop four times by this time. I also have found that I really like the EV that I got and wont be going back to an ice car. for my family the EV we got is both saving money and more reliable for our lifes no more worry about will I have enough gas to get me to the next payday I just plug in when I get home

      If that were true very few would be buying EVs, but they sell in the tens of thousands every year, and sales are increasing. It's not because rich people are buying them all up, it's because over a 7-10 year ownership span they are WAY cheaper and cause less damage to the environment (yes, including their manufacture). What holds up sales is those paycheck to paycheck folks who can't afford ANY new car. They will always stretch just to buy the cheapest one up front, no matter the long term cost. I saved enough to buy my first EV in cash, so it's all savings from here on, and I got a deal that saved me $10,000 off the original sticker price. You'll never convince me I didn't and don't continue to save a bundle.

      @@Trashed20659agreed. If you drive a lot and drive a big car the savings are actually mindboggling, people dont take the time to do the actual math to realize the savings. Its like anything in this world, you have to think about whats going on and do research otherwise people go through life clueless. Happens with everything in life tho. Its not easy to have the time to understand things but it can save yoh in the long run to understand things first. Like making a chess move without thinking about it, you wont win that game.

      Charging off solar is a great idea.
      The F-150 Lightning has received a ton of very positive comments from owners.

      Solar charging is easily done with a few foldable thin panels maybe 6 of them and a large power bank with ev charging feature. Most people get about 50 miles per day ona good day. Not bad for if you wanted to explore a dessert or something.
