My father and I ran a stock Power Products engine in 1961 and it couldn't match a McCulloch... not even close. We switched to a Mc-5 and suddenly became competitive. Mc Cullochs were the winning engine in 1961-62 when I raced in Southern California.
When I was 14 in 1965, I had Power Products, McCulloch, and West Bend engines. Some of the guys from back then are still working with wrenches. My modified Mac 6 was the fastest.
Nice video! I wish my dad was here to see this. He used to race a Power Product in the mid 60 when he was in his teens. He always said it would give the Mac's and West Bends fits when it ran! I think part of that was because he only weighed about 90 pounds back then. lol.
This PP has BALLS! Too bad on the cylinder issue, but it was making big power! I collect and restore old open flywheel PP mower and industrial engines--these things always fascinated me! The crude cooling system, 1 HP that will kick a 6 HP 4 stroke mower's ASS, and the wide variety of flywheels, magnetos, stamped steel cooling fans, fin designs, etc etc. I have even seen factory stock mowers with NO cooling fan fitted at all! Just an open flywheel magneto and "free air" cooling! The fins were so large and deep, and, being oriented vertically when the cylinder is horizontal, as on vertical shaft engines and a few "lay down" cylinder horizontal shaft engines (like your kart engine), they had good natural convection cooling anyway. In fact, most of the stamped steel "fans" merely blew on the BASE of the cylinder, leaving the hottest part, the head and top end of the jug, to be free air cooled anyway! Beside this, they were really good performers, even stock. I want to do a horizontal shaft, horizontal cylinder free-air cooled engine for old engine shows! Maybe a vertical shaft version of this cooling system layout in the future. I have 2 1946 vertical shaft models, one restored and running sweet, with the early "cylinder" shaped small diameter heavy gauge steel fan and rare early type stamped steel starter pulley, instead of the later cast aluminum pulley. One is stuck, and in need of major restoration, but it will be worth it to get it freed up and running again. Power products 2 strokes are the most under appreciated engines around, but I appreciate them and love them! The first Lawn-Boy had a Canadian-built PP engine with a Maytag-style flywheel and fan assembly! Keep that PP buzzin! Rick Delair.
ricksbulbs soon I will upload a video showing how this engine was modified, sounds like you will enjoy that ... many hours of work went into this project ... I put it on the back shelf, but plan to install a quality cylinder liner this Summer and take it back out for more fun. I have driven many types / models of kart engines, only this AH-82 has strong low rpm torque, it really is a very different feel, sound and ride, well worth experiencing.
Dude i had one of these frames when i was little, and i got rid of it. Im so stupid im 39 now and i bought a brand new 5 hp briggs stratt for it and it ripped live axle drum brake it had the other plate if i wanted to run two engine it was cool i love to restore one know.
because that is how they raced these motors in the 50's (its a vintage kart).. tuned exhaust systems came several years later to karting, after hydroplane racers pioneered the technology
John Wells because 2 strokes are oiled by the fuel/oil mixture. If youre not blipping the throttle after a hard pull, theres little/no oil getting in there to help cool and lubricate so itll seize the engine
How did the liner break? Was it bored out? I have a 5hp tecumseh off an air cooled outboard (I think it's the same engine family), it has 2 round transfers on each side and 3 round exhaust ports. Wondering if it could get too hot and cause the bridges between all the ports to expand and bulge inwards.
Were they "highly modified" McCullochs and West Bends you were eating? Just wondering???? Where in the world is Terry Ives when you need him?????????????
watch my other video titled "The Big One 2013 - Power Products vintage kart", the 2nd half is Terry Ives and I swapping it back and forth, both running modified PowerProducts AH82 motors. (Terry is white helmet, red jacket, blue kart, first passes me at 3:02)
Actually all the fast guys ( me ) ran Komet's Not saying your's is not cool because it is. I just didn't see this as a "eating contest" Go have your fun !!!!
no....the steel cylinder liner was original material....made of lousy steel...that is what broke.....look closer...this engine is a work of art. the head and case, and girdle was machined in the drivers shop. This engine is a jewel ......and these men walk among the gods of karting...

That Mac was a 49E. Run up on a 101AA one time lol.

I ran a 101AA with exp. chamber...
on a Margay frame wasn't a West Bend that could touch it....
Now that is one of the best tracks I’ve ever seen! Why can’t that be on my property?
Bullshit

I know this guy... he is 6" 4" and about 220lbs .. that motor was STRONG, till it wasn't
well at least it kicked ass while it was still kickin' lol
My AH82 did the same thing. Also, bolts were always coming out. As a kid, I didn't know about LocTite.
Meanwhile the Mac's and West Bends finished one two...

@@VintagePowerSport u should try to modify a Partner R12 ;) Great engine- and also has good low rpm torque.
Power Product, like the others won races. The Karts raced in classes and were more or less evenly matched so the best driver won most of the time
I ❤️ two strokes 👍🏻😎
You could hear the cylinder going as it deteriorated while the engine's power disappeared.
luckily you couldn't hear me swearing, as 100 hours of engine work turned to junk!
100 hours. Did you carry it for 9 months?

Cool vid, too bad on the fatigue. The King Kart you passed was powered with a Mc49, driven by Rick Magnuson.
why aren't you using a expansion chamber? or exhaust pipe at all?
because that is how they raced these motors in the 50's (its a vintage kart).. tuned exhaust systems came several years later to karting, after hydroplane racers pioneered the technology
Nobody ran mufflers in those days. Most ran megaphone exhausts. They screamed.
Yep. To win races ya gotta keep em together, eh?
What track is this? Reminds me of where I used to race in Monrovia, MD in early 90’s.
why is he playing with the throttle like that ? is he trying to wear out the butterfly shaft in the carb ?
John Wells because 2 strokes are oiled by the fuel/oil mixture. If youre not blipping the throttle after a hard pull, theres little/no oil getting in there to help cool and lubricate so itll seize the engine
I have two power bees I think they are called that.one never used brand new the other runs well do they have any value
to finish first, it must last. I would say no you didnt eat anything.

Ate the Mac's right up until it seized - oops.
I am not impressed I have seen hopped up 820's run way faster.
I wanna get into this shit, so cool
you kicked ass.

I think the kart was a Fox Kart
power prod is lawnboy,... no ?
Well, that didn't end well. Better success next time.
Carburetor sounds troublesome.

Over heated and seized I bet.
