I went to school just around the corner from the Leyland car showroom where they filmed that in Wembley and fondly recall getting a cheerful wave from Ronnie Barker as we walked past on the way home ;)
Wow I loved this, it just shows how much this kind of comedy wouldn't fly today. I had not seen this before, so this history of these has now just another smile added to my face. Who doesn't need that!
I had forgotten all about this advert but i would only have been 12 ; It is Brilliant! What a trip down memory lane. I must have travelled in or owned every model in the ad and it must be said BL's motors weren't that bad. We had Minis, Metro cars/vans / GTA, Marina vans, Allegros saloon and estate, none of them EVER let us down. Pity the management and workforce managed to bungle it all up...
Class television! The iconic two Ronnie's and some truly iconic Leyland products that were way ahead of their time.Saw a showroom condition Rover 3500 Vitesse go crazy money recently at a classic auction.Who's laughing now?
@@mackenzierough Did you know that in the sixties and seventies, big stars of ITV the commercial station in the UK were restricted from appearing in commercials on ITV due to conflict of interest, with the regulator not happy with ITV celebs promoting products on ITV. BBC celebs however were not restricted, and so this is why a lot of BBC stars appeared in commercials on the rival channel ITV back then. Strange times.

This advertisement is as good as any Two Ronnies sketch. It deserves to be more well known than it is. Thank you for uploading the video. Does anyone know if RB wrote the script ?
Yeah, I had the same thought. I remember watching a UA-cam video in which they did a mastermind sketch, British Leyland was described as.. "a long running musical hall sage."
As this was a 90 second advert, I doubt this would have aired much on TV, as TV adverts were normally 30 seconds or 60 seconds on ITV. This 90 second version was most likely only aired in cinemas. With a shortened edited 60 second version aired on ITV.
@@mackenzierough Well it would have been very rare for ITV to air a 90 second commercial. Considering commercial time per hour was limited to just 7 minutes back then.
superb framing of the allegro there. making sure you dont see the bodywork as it might put off potential buyers. but wow what a lineup. cant imagine why it all went wrong.
@Keep on Tri-ing! Simple, the Marina and Maxi were highly outdated but they were still making them. The Princess was a significantly newer, bigger and more expensive car than either.
@@Locost59 Maxi was a little bland looking due to the 1800 ancestry. But outdated, how many other manufacturers were selling 5 door 5 speed fwd family hatchbacks at the time?
@@Locost59 The Renault 16 was 14 to at the time and a year off retirement and the Talbot a raid on the Simca parts bin. I do not doubt there were better cars available and Maxi should have been replaced by the mid seventies. It was still technically ahead of some of the other competitors at ten years old.
@@benjaminthatcher5287 it's not just that the architecture was from the 1800 but many of the parts like the ignition system. Our BL cars even in the 80s had dreadful contact breaker ignition systems while the Talbots had electronic ignition that just worked. Many of the components were 60s or even 50s in origin. We found the Princesses and or Allegro to be reliable (except that ignition) comfortable and vastly more resistant to rust than the Ford's. It's a shame they were so badly funded
The problem with these cars in the 70s is they were such poor quality and so badly built it was the death nell for Austin Morris. The most successful years were the 50s and 60s with the Morris minor range.
I think a case could be made that these cars were literally worse than the eastern block The Fiat 124 on which Lada was based was much better than a Marina Skodas wiped the floor with Allegro

Two Ronnies . Pure magic ❤

Will never see there like again the best
Things were better back then🇬🇧👍
Food and air quality for sure, I miss the price's, can't afford digestives today 😅 🇬🇧
The cars certainly weren’t
Thanks For Posting This Gem Of An Advert.! Ronnie Corbett And Barker Were In A Class Of Their Own. The Finest Comedians Of Them All.!
R.I.P Ronnie Corbett. Along with Mr Barker, you'll be sadly missed.

Remember it originally, showing my age Haha
Great advert! So funny. But, I'm shocked to see BL using The Two Ronnie's when they spent so much time mocking them!

I'd have bought all of them
Fantastic advert.
The princess wedge has evolved into the.... Tesla cybertruck in 2020!.... 😎👌🌾🌾🌾🛸

If it was for Cinema it would have to have a censor certificate superimposed on the opening at bottom on screen.

Marina had an OHC engine ? What size ? Short stroke ? How many main bearings ? Austin Marina only came with pushrod 4 in the U.S.
its a goodnight from me...
Where can I buy these wonderful cars?
Great fun...

1:17 - is there something wrong with the Mini's driver side front wheel. Looks like it's cambered too much inside.
i think they raised the front so it faces the camera better
i wishd id had some day 2 minis and 2 marinas
Why in heavens name would you suggest a Mini, Austin, Morris, or a Princess to a man who leaves a Jaguar to go inside a post office.
Not Austin Morris, Leyland
Mini, Marina, Princess.....sounds like those intra-uterine contraceptive devices ! 😂😂
What a bunch of coconuts. 😂
I was never a BL fan more into my Ford's in the 70/80's. Although i did have a soft spot for the Princess
Ronnie C's wide boy act...predates Mike from _The Young Ones_ by three years. (Ronnie B is running from the cops because of _Porridge,_ I'm guessing.)
But post dates Dad's Army. The spiv has been a feature of British comedy since at least the 1930s.
