According to guitarist Gary Rossington, for two years after Allen Collins wrote the initial chords, vocalist Ronnie Van Zant insisted that there were too many for him to create a melody in the belief that the melody needed to change alongside the chords. After Collins played the unused sequence at rehearsal one day, Van Zant asked him to repeat it, then wrote out the melody and lyrics in three or four minutes. The guitar solos that finish the song were added originally to give Van Zant a chance to rest, as the band was playing several sets per night at clubs at the time.
I was at the Anaheim Stadium show that same Summer of ‘77. ‘Freebird’ was and is the ultimate concert ending encore song, and for decades people at any concert from any artist would call out Freebird , it was just for fun, but everybody knew it was the ultimate encore.

Great Reaction! This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! And you are right, your Grandmothers were hot!

Elok great job with your reaction and thoughts on Free Bird from Lynyrd Skynyrd .

Bass, Rhythm, and Lead guitar totally tearing it up with an excellent percussion accompaniment.
Allen Collins would've kept that up all night if Ronnie had let him. What a bunch of guitar players. Every time I hear it I know I'll never match it.
I've seen them dozens of times live. They would play Free Bird for 15-20 minutes after doing 1 1/2 to 2 hour shows.
Day on the Green was a summer thing at the time.... endless bands, sun, fun!
The whistle sounds in the beginning are to mimic a Bird ( Free Bird) that is.
