      Smoking weed, watching, Star track,debating who the baddest leads were, jlmi, Clapton, Beck, stuck up for Rory Gallagher, band came out with 2 leads, Wishbone Ash, the king will come, listen to it, but Lynyrd Skynard came out with 3 nirvana, thanks 😊

    I'm from Jacksonville; Florida. I'm a huge fan of this band. Unfortunately all the original members are gone now. Ost are allburied in the same cemetery and j visit often.

    That bands from Jacksonville Florida and I was born in Tampa Florida, and yes those were my teen years so I partied my ass off to the best music in the world

      I've seen them dozens of times live. They would play Free Bird for 15-20 minutes after doing 1 1/2 to 2 hour shows.

      Me too! I saw Skynyrd' along with Ted Nugent, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon, at Anaheim Stadium, that very summer. They had many great all day festivals in those days. Ten hours of music, by four or five headline bands for about ten dollars. Those were the days!

      You just named my top four bands! I saw The Stones 16 times and The Who four. It's a pity that you don't get out more. It might broaden your horizons. The difference between you and me is that I've been to over a thousand shows and own thousands of albums. Nobody gave me my opinion. I went out and learned for myself. Playing follow the leader is a game for kindergarteners.
      P.S. You may the first person that I've ever heard with such a pronounced regional prejudice. It doesn't seem at all healthy

    According to guitarist Gary Rossington, for two years after Allen Collins wrote the initial chords, vocalist Ronnie Van Zant insisted that there were too many for him to create a melody in the belief that the melody needed to change alongside the chords. After Collins played the unused sequence at rehearsal one day, Van Zant asked him to repeat it, then wrote out the melody and lyrics in three or four minutes. The guitar solos that finish the song were added originally to give Van Zant a chance to rest, as the band was playing several sets per night at clubs at the time.

    I was at the Anaheim Stadium show that same Summer of ‘77. ‘Freebird’ was and is the ultimate concert ending encore song, and for decades people at any concert from any artist would call out Freebird , it was just for fun, but everybody knew it was the ultimate encore.

      12 when it all kicked off so I caught it all. Some of the music up till then was very decent also. Most of the finger snapping music sucked, big time. I still like do-wop, certain songs.
      Blue Moon all time favorite.

      Yet it only reached # 38 on the charts. Lynyrd. Skynard never had a #1 hit. Sweet Home Alabama went to #8 and was thier top charted song.
      Play it pretty for Atlanta. Some of the most famous words ever spoken in classic rock by Ronnie Van Zant.

    1974-75, I was in the 9th grade. Our social studies teacher Mr. Campbell had a class project on this song. We all had to write what the different versus meant to each of us. I went on the see them live at 4 stadium concerts in the 70s. I wish I had that paper I wrote. Yes, every show was really like that.

    Yes, you just watched one of the greatest live performances in rock history. This was one of our biggest party songs in high-school, and yes the 5 year period from about 1972 to 1977 was the richest in the history of American and British music. Enjoyed your reaction and thoughts.

    Great Reaction! This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! And you are right, your Grandmothers were hot!

    Some guitar stores post signs stating “no free bird, no stairway to heaven” because that’s all people play to test out the guitar before purchasing ! Drives the employees nuts to hear all day long. Epic song. Thanks ✌️

    BTW they were actually classified as Southern Rock and the other Southern Rock band that is a can’t miss is Molly Hatchet, also from Jax, FL and I think you would enjoy their song “Flirtin with disaster” 🤟🏽🇺🇸
