I love what Dre and Kendrick did together and it obviously made Dot reach a whole new level, but dude was far from unknown. He’d been grinding for years and was widely being recognized as a great rapper on his own merits already.

Remember, at the time Cole career didn't blow up yet. He was still in doubt if he wanted to be a music producer, a rapper or a rap business man. He tried to sign Kdot first and he produced some tracks to him on Section 80. They even recorded a joint project that was never released. He said at the time "If you invite Dot to your song, he's going to m*rder you on it", meaning that he already did that to him in their never released project. Their friendship is old, that's also why he didn't want to battle Kendrick. He didn't have the spirit to go to war with him cause he respect him and know what he is capable off. This is a perfect example showing why cole backed out. Lyrically cole all down to battle but rap battles often have to boil down to getting disrespectful and personal and he has high respect for Kendrick. I don’t think it’s that cole didn’t want the smoke it’s more that cole couldn’t compete without disrespecting dot and his fam
when it comes to rap battles it gets dirty in the trenches and way too often people go too hard and overdo it and say slanderous things they can’t take back so what starts out as friendly competition can always end in lifelong fueds. Cole wants to outrap his colleagues not desecrate their legacy, at the end of the day he chose to keep a friend versus fighting for a spot on a podium.
J Cole is a real one for seeing the writing on the wall and knowing Kendrick and Drake had some shit to get off their chests that went way beyond. Cole was smart as fuck for this decision and I'm glad we collectively saw that.
