I realize this is aftermarket, but in a perfect world you would want that thing to go under the front plate so that it isn't acting like a big razer on every log or branch you cross. I would either mod the front to over lap or add a second aftermarket part that makes the front overlap that plate and make one continuous slide towards the back with no groove to catch debris facing forward.

Another thing, that plate being metal....if, by some strange happenstance, those large battery wires short to it, you now have created the runaway biggest mother of a heat plate. This might happen once in a million times, but I would want a big damn fuse or breaker between that compartment and any wiring specifically coming from that big battery....if this already exists by some stroke of Tesla genius then GOOD...
@@McGyver777ATGMAIL totally agree I think composite could have been a better solution and lighter. I also think in some case having the slicing metal underneath might be more dangerous for your cable then the plastic skid plate. But R&D is a good thing and I do think they are on the right track just maybe other test needs to happen.
@@McGyver777ATGMAIL It's a valid concern but the pyro fuse would blow very quickly in that event, cutting off power to those HV lines. The plate would have to be physically shoved through the outer casing of the battery for it to be any issue, at that point probably the least of your worries...

Great video. Bad design of the skid plate, IT should go UNDER the front bumper plastic, this should push down any derby. down on my list to do.

This does seem pretty obvious. Or at least bend the front edge of the skid up a little. Except for this issue I'd buy one today for my Md Y. Every car eventually grinds over something.

No, "the only good way to jack the car up" is with an ezlift. It will get our Y almost 2 ft high security. Well worth the money

I don't off road in my Model 3 Performance - Nevertheless, I hit a ladder in the middle of the interstate at 70 mph when the car was a month old - no chance to avoid it!
it resulted in some paint damage and some scrapes underneath. It could have been so much worse.

We were on the tail end of a 3000 mile road trip, the corner of our Model 3s skid plate tore. I’m assuming high speeds and a loose bolt were to blame. It dragged on the ground and duct tape did not hold long. We pulled over to retape every hour. Tesla replaced it for free and met us at a supercharger same day (which was super cool). This plate is something I’ll have to look at. Click bait click bait!
How about including a strip of aluminium with nuts welded on that can sandwich the plastic section,so you don’t get the splinter back in?
It would only need to be 2 or 3 inches wide and span from the 2 widest bolts and incorporate the 2 centre bolts.

My model 3 has been in the shop two weeks after going over a metal object on the road, which punctured my skid plate and my battery. I have pictures. Battery is being replaced, plus the skid plate, cost $16k.

I just ordered one for our model 3, but here is something else. Maybe you should write them about making one for the front undercover that goes up to the bumper. This is the leading edge which is also sloped upward towards the front and is more susceptible to damage and items hitting there.

I have been worried about this with driving over chunks of ice that fall off trucks wheels on the highway. About 20 years ago I had it puncture a stock belly pan on a VW TDI and crack the oil pan. luckily I stopped right away, but I have run over ice chunks to many times to count and the Telsa 3 isn't that tall to safely run over them....

You should think of protecting actual people. High cabin radiation is a concern. Newer Toyota and Lexus hybrids and Nissan electric seem to have a better shield over the electric components keeping cabin radiation low. Audi and Tesla are one of the highest. EV buyers are often health conscious. It is easy to shield with metallic sheets but they won't factory install until it becomes a widespread concern as usual. Maybe you can invent a metallic floor shield to go over the electric cables and over the battery.
