Yes, I have struggled with this myself. Went to range yesterday with this video in my head and tried the two adjustments; take left thumb off & slightly weaken grip. Both worked, ball now going straight or a slight draw. I use a slightly stronger grip for driver & 3W, use a weaker grip for everything else. Thank you, yes I am a subscriber.
Hi Mike…actually tried playing with the left thumb off the club, after reading a very old golf book illustrated by Alex Morrison. He was a teacher back when hickory was still in vogue, but was known for his prodigious length, hitting the ball up to 300 yards. As you have said in the past, nothing is “ new” in the game of golf if you look hard enough. Thanks for the video and Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Mike, I'm a huge recent fan. Used to play great, lost my way (a number of top rated instructors, that, well, might not have long term helped me), but I'm recovering now. Wanted to note in this video at about the 30 second mark, that way from the inside path also makes you stand up out of your posture. Your whole approach is seems so simple. Working on getting my grip back to neutral vs. super weak. Feels so strong and odd, but I'm getting there.
I'm a huge fan, too. You are right abt standing up. What helped me was Malaska's concept of hands down and club head out. Downswing Clock hands like 12h07 instead of wrong way 12h13. At around minute 13, the clubshaft is so behind me. That makes me flip and standing up. When I do it correctly at around minute 07 , i feel the clubshaft more in front of me and I never miss the shot. Hope it can help you.
Took this wrist release visual to the course ... Shot my best 77 every single shot was much tighter dispersion ..got to really release it without fearing the hook...
I went back to your release of the club only last night while I was at the range, again searching for a bit of consistency. I hit some of the most accurate 8 irons that I can remember. It does feel like I’m hooding the club going back and almost opening on the way though, but it’s just that I’ve eliminated excessive rotation which after 30+ years feels normal.
I'm going to try this seems i just hit a few from the yard into the woods with this grip & had a good result. Not to worry finding balls in the woods is easy once you plant enough they bloom in spring & throughout the summer, sometimes you come back with a big bouquet sometimes not, hitting the same club is key so you know about how far you planted them
Mike first off wonderful explanation! I have thought they closed face at the top all my golfing life. Many of instructors have a try to get me to neutralize my grip and get the club face more open but I’m never able to do that. Would you say this could work for a close face player like myself. It definitely helps me get through the ball working they released the way you express. I’d be curious on your thoughts. Thank you so much.
Recently came across your site Mike. Brilliant stuff that makes most other sites feel obsolete. I would love to hear your take on the feel at impact. Like the majority of amateurs, I've been playing the game for years with a feeling of hitting the ball at the bottom of the arc when both arms straighten, with a strong feeling of a 'hit' as you strike the ball. I now know that this is wrong and that both arms should not be straight until way after the ball strike at about 4 o clock with a sequence of ball strike, divot and then both arms straighten .The question is how do you strike the ball with a bent right arm with any feeling of imparting power into the shot?
Lead thumb on the shaft is not always how golf was generally played and taught. It’s more of a ‘modern technique’ that can be used to rotate the face closed through impact for specialty shots. Somewhere in the history of the game it became common practice. In general I don’t think it should be for the reasons Mike talks about here, among others. You can have a really ‘strong’ grip for power and speed without the thumb on the shaft and pretty much never worry about losing the ball left. I’ve recently gone to no thumb on the shaft and it’s changed my face control through impact tremendously.
Would it also work to place the thumb more on top or to the left of the grip, so that it has no force re: turning the club over? I find it very uncomfortable to take the thumb completely off but I feel fine moving it over to the left side or on top, where it seems to have no actual impact on rotation. Would this also work, do you think? @@slmmcgee8686
Tried this with my driver last night. It eliminates the hook but I struggled to maintain control of the club. Good tip though and will continue to experiment. When it did work I hit long slight draws.
That's a great tip that I've never heard before. Feels better already. Thank you 😊

Wow this helped so much! I was striping my long irons which is pretty rare.
I like these quick videos, I have no time for a long explanation.
Thank you Mike. That's what I needed.
Going to try the baseball grip one more time. Thumb off tip is very helpful. Thanks
This video makes the most sense and offers a simple and great explanation of the change needed!
It’s amazing how this helps to work the hands through the ball, by holding it this way. It’s powerful too. Great lesson again coach 👏👏👍👍
Mike your the best teacher on any tube! Great explanation of a great game technique!
Man is brilliant. He figured it out. Trust him.
MAGIC! MR. Malaska
this was me for sure . Coming too much from inside+forearms gaved me hooks.
But changed to a weaker left hand grip helped me .🎉
Thank you, Mike. This is exactly the key problem in my golf swing 👍

Thank you so much, this really helped me.. great lesson
I think that that separates the Pro's and high hcp amateurs.
Thanks for always spreading your knowledge sir!

On my par 3’s 1st shot everything is hooking left. Definitely going to try this.
I wish I could like this video 100 times
Brilliant

Thanks!
I just weakened that left thumb by moving it from the side of the grip to closer to the top. Cured the hook. Just striping it
Thanks! For me to keep from hooking I have to almost leave go of the club with the right hand like Freddy snd VJ does

Would you ever suggest having the left thumb off the club (like a baseball grip)?
Can you elaborate more on this in another video?
Mike…this video put alot together for me
Baseball grip?
should the left thumb always stay off? Or is this simply a drill to get the feel

So, when do I go back to putting my thumb on the grip?
Thanks
Thank you! We appreciate it!
That’s a slap hinge release Mike. Very scoops. Low point issues occur.

Adding on to the comment, I tend to get the face shut and flat. At the top of the swing.
✌
wont work due to inherient issue with the modern golf grip
and no pga guru knows it
And you think you invented this😂
Terrible
Why?
