Fixing A Strong Grip That Hooks // Malaska Golf

  • A Malaska Golf member wants to know how to fix a strong grip. He had a strong grip for a long time and fought a push fade, a club coming too much from the inside. He was catching the ball and starting the ball out to the right of where he was aimed.
    The grip that he used caused him to hook the ball, and he was taught that he needed to turn the face over on the swing. He also learned to come from the inside and hold the clubface off.
    You need to get the path to change so you’re not coming too much from the inside. The path needs to come more straight into the ball. You must also let the club go by taking your thumb off the club. The thumb tends to push, lock the wrist, and turn the face over. Practice by taking your thumb off and letting the club swing and your wrists pivot up and down.
    You can hit the ball as hard as you want with as much speed, and won’t hit a pull hook. There needs to be an acceleration in the club to create speed.
    When you have a strong grip, you don’t want to come from the inside and hold the face off to keep it from hooking. You want to let the club go, but your hands must work to keep the face from turning down. You can get your path heading straighter into the back of the ball, and when your hands let the clubhead pass, the face works differently.

    Hi Mike…actually tried playing with the left thumb off the club, after reading a very old golf book illustrated by Alex Morrison. He was a teacher back when hickory was still in vogue, but was known for his prodigious length, hitting the ball up to 300 yards. As you have said in the past, nothing is “ new” in the game of golf if you look hard enough. Thanks for the video and Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada.

    Yes, I have struggled with this myself. Went to range yesterday with this video in my head and tried the two adjustments; take left thumb off & slightly weaken grip. Both worked, ball now going straight or a slight draw. I use a slightly stronger grip for driver & 3W, use a weaker grip for everything else. Thank you, yes I am a subscriber.

    Mike, I'm a huge recent fan. Used to play great, lost my way (a number of top rated instructors, that, well, might not have long term helped me), but I'm recovering now. Wanted to note in this video at about the 30 second mark, that way from the inside path also makes you stand up out of your posture. Your whole approach is seems so simple. Working on getting my grip back to neutral vs. super weak. Feels so strong and odd, but I'm getting there.

      I'm a huge fan, too. You are right abt standing up. What helped me was Malaska's concept of hands down and club head out.
      Downswing Clock hands like 12h07 instead of wrong way 12h13.
      At around minute 13, the clubshaft is so behind me. That makes me flip and standing up.
      When I do it correctly at around minute 07 , i feel the clubshaft more in front of me and I never miss the shot. Hope it can help you.

    I went back to your release of the club only last night while I was at the range, again searching for a bit of consistency. I hit some of the most accurate 8 irons that I can remember. It does feel like I’m hooding the club going back and almost opening on the way though, but it’s just that I’ve eliminated excessive rotation which after 30+ years feels normal.

    I'm going to try this seems i just hit a few from the yard into the woods with this grip & had a good result. Not to worry finding balls in the woods is easy once you plant enough they bloom in spring & throughout the summer, sometimes you come back with a big bouquet sometimes not, hitting the same club is key so you know about how far you planted them

    Recently came across your site Mike. Brilliant stuff that makes most other sites feel obsolete. I would love to hear your take on the feel at impact. Like the majority of amateurs, I've been playing the game for years with a feeling of hitting the ball at the bottom of the arc when both arms straighten, with a strong feeling of a 'hit' as you strike the ball. I now know that this is wrong and that both arms should not be straight until way after the ball strike at about 4 o clock with a sequence of ball strike, divot and then both arms straighten .The question is how do you strike the ball with a bent right arm with any feeling of imparting power into the shot?

    Mike first off wonderful explanation! I have thought they closed face at the top all my golfing life. Many of instructors have a try to get me to neutralize my grip and get the club face more open but I’m never able to do that. Would you say this could work for a close face player like myself. It definitely helps me get through the ball working they released the way you express. I’d be curious on your thoughts. Thank you so much.

    • @slmmcgee8686

      Lead thumb on the shaft is not always how golf was generally played and taught. It’s more of a ‘modern technique’ that can be used to rotate the face closed through impact for specialty shots. Somewhere in the history of the game it became common practice. In general I don’t think it should be for the reasons Mike talks about here, among others. You can have a really ‘strong’ grip for power and speed without the thumb on the shaft and pretty much never worry about losing the ball left. I’ve recently gone to no thumb on the shaft and it’s changed my face control through impact tremendously.

    • @jasenko56
      @jasenko56 Рік тому

      Would it also work to place the thumb more on top or to the left of the grip, so that it has no force re: turning the club over? I find it very uncomfortable to take the thumb completely off but I feel fine moving it over to the left side or on top, where it seems to have no actual impact on rotation. Would this also work, do you think? @@slmmcgee8686

    So. A fix to the fix. If Ben Hogan used the standard Vardon grip as he described in his famous book, why are we going down this rabbit hole? Hogan's description: The left hand can hold the club pinched between the pad of the left hand and the forefinger. The other three fingers are then wrapped around the grip, and then the thumb is just placed on the grip, making a V that pointed in the vicinity of the right shoulder. Importantly, he wanted light grip pressure, like holding a bird, that left the hand , wrist, and fingers very responsive to forces. The right hand gripped the club with the ring finger and middle finger, only, while the pinky laid on top of the forefinger of the left hand, and the forefinger and thumb did not even have to be on the club as he recommended that the golfer practice this way. I see Hogan's grip as being extremely weak, but responsive to the swinging club. I believe that in Mike's grip that if the thumb of the left hand was used as described that the feeling would be of a weak grip also. The fundamental here is that the wrists need to be soft and flexible, while being lively and responsive. Hogan's grip would allow the wrists to work as Mike describes. Hogan did not like the right thumb, and Mike does not like the left thumb. It seems that the thumbs are a real trouble source for golfers! However, for support of the club in the backswing the left thumb has to be used. So the Hogan grip wins.

    • @greatwhite3676
      @greatwhite3676 Рік тому +2

      Not everybody is Hogan. I play really good golf with a strong grip. Its just natural for me. The vast majority of players would benefit from a stronger grip because the average grip is way too weak. In my opinion a draw is better shot for amateurs. I promotes the delofting and hands forward feel of crisp iron shots. Keeps the ball somewhat out of the wind. A fade is great when you swing 118mph. I know everybody on youtube carries it 300+ but thats not the norm

    • @mattbakergolf
      @mattbakergolf Рік тому +2

      Hogan had to make adjustments for his hook so built a grip to suit that. Hence most golfers of this century has slices, all because they followed Hogan as law. You need to try this before deciding it’s wrong, it might make a difference. There is a saying in the pro ranks. Those who teach must never cease to learn, you have to try things first before passing judgement. But hopefully the way you hold it helps your game I’m sure it does. 👍

      @biden-putin-stalin Рік тому

      @@mattbakergolf I have tried it and I was having the problem that Mike is addressing in this video. It looks to me that when he takes his thumb off that the wrists become much more free to flex. Hogan's weak grip does the same.

      @@greatwhite3676 I play a lot of amateur golf tournaments and I can tell you that the lower handicap good drivers of the golf ball will play a relatively straight shot with a slight fade bias. That keeps the ball in the short grass which is so important for scoring. Their distance is more than adequate without that last little roll that gets into trouble. Very rare to see an amateur driving over 300 yards and keeping it in play. With the wrist action that Mike is promoting I can guarantee that his ball flight is virtually straight.

  • @biden-putin-stalin
    @biden-putin-stalin Рік тому

    Let's get a real definition of a weak and a strong grip. Look up the definition of weak and strong and then you will have it. A strong grip feels strong, and that implies locked powerful feeling wrists. Putting the thumb on the back of the handle and using it forcefully locks the wrists and feels strong. Thumb on top means the thumb cannot be used for power and feels weak. The fact that you can see 4 knuckles does not mean strong if the thumb is not used for power. Mike takes the thumb off, so therefore he uses a weak grip.
