Mazda's Infotainment System Finally Gets CarPlay!

- After years of waiting Mazda finally did it! Almost every Mazda sold in the last few years should be able to get the upgrade from the dealer to activate CarPlay and Android Auto support. In addition, 2019 model year Mazdas should start getting this feature from the factory over the course of the next few months.

Prefer the rotary control Alex. Use it on my BMW all the time. I hate touch screens, especially here in cold Minnesota. Nice video.
Rotary dial is much better in colder climates as I drive with gloves on here in Canada 5 months of the year. I also find it more ergonomic in my 2017 CX-5 as I am 6"4 so I have a decent lean from my seating position in to any dash based screen. Long and short I never touch the screen even when I am stopped. The system is not perfect but overall I love my CX-5
Curious, how comfortable are you in the car at that height?
In most cases *the control knob is faster, easier and less distracting* to use while driving. You can do it "blindfolded", while you have to look a the screen/fingers using the t.screen while you're not doing 85 at 55 on the DC beltway, trying to adjust the volume, or change the track playing. Some already realized this (Honda, Lincoln, Cadillac..)
Glad Mazda is doing it, but they need to catch up bc adding Android A and Apple C should have been done years ago, and most of the software is still outdated and has limited functionality.
I agree. I love this car but I do think it is less distracting to be able to use the touch screen while in motion rather than to have to look down to touch a button on the console. Also...I wish the Apple Car Play was through Bluetooth and not having to use a USB.
I have a 2016 Miata and planning to get the Carplay upgrade. I can say that the control knob is great for the factory system at least. So much so that having a controller is one of the things I look for when looking at cars. It sounds minor but its one of those things you interact with all the time, like the gear shift. You just want it to be easy and controller knob is way better than hitting unresponsive pixels on a screen.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Ahmed Matias Instablaster =)
@Musa Peyton i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Musa Peyton It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account !
@Ahmed Matias Glad I could help xD
I own a 2016 Mazda6 and I find Mazda's infotainment set up far superior than competitors. Sure you cannot use the touch screen and it has less features, but it is FAR less distracting than competitors. I've used systems from Ford, Chevy, and Kia, and while driving, I found myself hunting for buttons and not paying attention to the road. With the Mazda system, I can make changes without looking. The system is tactical and far superior in the not-distracting sense.
Just had Apple CarPlay installed at the dealer 2 days ago. So far, I’m indifferent. The interface and speed, compared to Mazda Connect, are wonderful. Having my iPhone navigation on screen is super nice. What I don’t like is that I cannot choose a music artist or album while driving, only while parked. If I would’ve known this, I would not have had it installed. I don’t mind the scroll wheel actually, over time you get used to it.
Bought a new Mazda 6 Sig with Apple/Google system already installed. Is a little slow to come up but works fine. The little 'Getting Started' pdf was very helpful. My only complaint is not being able to use the touch screen at ALL times. Maybe they'l have an upgrade for this later on. Thx for the informative video. PS: love the car and the Turbo is just what it needed.
My mazda dealer upgraded a 2016 mazda 6 no problem a couple of weeks ago. Took them longer than expected though (First one apparently), but it works great. Such an improvement over the mazda system even at C$490. Just need Tom Tom to port their app over to car play now.
Once you get use to using control knob It is by far more intuitive and ergonomically in perfect position when driving , once you start leaning even just a bit from driving position you get out of sight of side and rear view mirrors range , also are not is best steering wheel control positon ... Control knob gives drivers more time to be in perfect position to decide or make emergency maneuver if needed. Not to mention smeary and greasy fingered LCD screen looks bad . There is a reason why premium and lux cars use these control knobs ....
Sorry but Accords , Camrys , Altimas, Passats, Fusions, and no other car in midsize not to mention compact car brings this feature to cars this inexpensive.
It is yet another unique aspect where Mazda offers more than others.
Totally agree! I also only use the knob on our Mazdas. It took some time to learn the function of the knob, but I am very happy now. I also don’t like the smeary touchscreens and with the knob, may actions can be done without looking at the screen and keeping your eyes on the road. I am hoping, that the Apple CarPlay upgrade is also soon available in my country.
Yea, when I first test drove the 2018 Mazda 6 Grand Touring Reserve(Which I ended up buying) I was expecting the worst, because every review hated on Mazda's infotainment. I was actually impressed and loved the control knob as well as the infotainment itself. So much better and safer than having to reach for the touch screen. Not only that but it is implemented very well. It looks very crisp and intuitive.
Touch screens have no place in cars.
I can't stand the control knob in my 2018 CX-5. I bought into the idea that I would get used to, but almost 8 months later I'm not there. I appreciate it as a secondary option and to keep finger prints off the screen as some suggest, but trying to drive and scroll and select is so much less intuitive then just simply poking the intended button on the screen. The one step movement of just reaching out and hitting a control is now broken down into several motions that require you to stare at the screen for. Add to this the fact that I can't just ask a passenger to do something as simple as hit play or pause or pick a song because their first instinct is to reach out and touch screen. Instead you have to start explaining, then reach over and take care of whatever it is yourself. There is no law against using a vehicle equipped touch screen, its my car, why don't I have the choice to enable or disable touch as I see fit?
@@ajones1842 some learn new language in months some in a year or years and some never will perfect it ....:) Give yourself time I guess you may need more of it.
I use it without looking down at it or looking for it or most importantly without moving my body or neck out of the range of all 3 mirrors and road in front.
So in case of any manouver needed I'm ready and it best position to control the steering wheel and car.....
Infotainment in the Mazda's is solid. The wheel set up works. It's why BMW and Audi have used it for years. I rarely use the touch screen. I just bought a 2018 CX-9 GT and had them retro-fit the Apple car play as part of the deal. The whole system works fine with the Mazda head unit. Waze works great, Spotify, Google maps. All good. This completes this Mazda set up and it's now on par with much of the competition. Mazda factory Nav is as good as any I've seen lately but you'll never use it with Carplay so who cares now.
You will want the Mazda factory GPS if you’re not in an area with cellular service. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that Google, Apple, Waze (technically also Google) all need cellular data to work.
Alex: Thanks for your review. I got some info about CarPlay on Mazda, but maybe not enough.
For future videos, and based on titles like these, could you focus on the main Topic? In this case CarPlay on Mazda. Mazda owners are already familiar with the Infotainment system, but not CarPlay in their Mazda. Your not the only reviewer to do this exact same thing. Thank goodness you did not go into reviewing the car. Is there so little to be said about CarPlay on Mazda that unrelated features have to be added to extend the video? Other than that good vid.
Either way I’ve made an appointment to have it installed, so maybe I’ll create a Video and post it with no fluff.
Any update sir about the installation? How much did it cost to get it installed?
There are already DIY guides with pics and videos on UA-cam for those that want to install it themselves without going to the dealer. It basically involves swapping out the USB Hub as Alex mentioned and running a cable to the infotainment screen, then finally updating the software. If you are savvy and can take some panels apart it's pretty simple otherwise you'd be better off going to the dealer but I wonder how much they would charge.
Dealers charge $450 a complete rip off
£350 in UK. Can't make up mind if it's worth it.
I feel like this should've been a free system update period, $100 I'd still complain but not as much, $450? I'm off to Fry's or CariD for an aftermarket receiver
@@jhobbs8833they should've charged a fee of $50 for the update, but I understand that they switch out the 1 volt amp usb charger to an upgraded 2.1volts so that is a bit more costly, but should've have been no where close $450.
I was offered $200 plus labor at my dealer here in Cali
I believe the reason for the new USB port is the Apple authentication system. There's a special chip that is needed for the MFI (made for iPhone) function to kick in on the iPhones.
I have an '18 Mazda 6 and got the free upgrade in September. Overall I'm pretty happy with Mazda's implementation, but it has a couple things that bother one. Most of them are not completely negative--i.e., in CarPlay mode, the NAV button will open Apple Maps, which is nice. However, I'd love to be able to set that to open a third party mapping app (Google Maps, etc.). As mentioned in the video, using the wheel with CarPlay can be somewhat counter-intuitive.
My biggest gripe is the "Ask Siri for more while driving" prompt when scrolling through long lists while driving. If you have a very large playlist, you only see about 15-20 songs, then the list is truncated and you are told to use voice control to listen to anything you don't see on the screen. I get what they were going for (keeping your eyes on the road), but it presents a problem for me with things like spoken word playlists, podcasts, etc. I can't always remember what the exact name of the track/podcast episode I want to listen to is, so I have to remember to queue it up before I hit the road. Strangely, it wasn't like this in my previous car that also had CarPlay support; I could scroll through a list with hundreds of entries while driving.
thanks for review
With iOS 12 you can now use Google Maps and Waze on Carplay
@@juicybullfrog Yes, but the NAV button is hard-coded to Apple Maps. I use Google Maps as my mapping service, but if you press the NAV button on the controller, it will open Apple Maps. I haven't found a way to change that yet.
Lincoln P The Nav button would take you to Google Maps if it were your default Map app on your iPhone. The default map app on an iPhone out of the box is Apple Maps. You need to change that to Google Maps.
@@JNPUS How exactly would one do that? Apple has been notoriously stingy in allowing users to change which apps are default. I cannot find any options in the settings to allow me to change which apps are default, be they mapping, music, mail, whatever.
If you have a 2018 Mazda vehicle, you can plug in your phone into the USB socket with the phone arrow, you will have Apple car play, IDK for Android auto. You will have to keep it plugged in or you will lose car play, and it will return to default Mazda settings.
And if you are a big fan of good sounding music, always plug your phone into the system with a wire(aux or USB), wired connections gives better audio signals than bluetooth/wireless.
Or you can wait till near end of 2018 for fully integrated ACP and AA.
deming xie i have a 2018 CX-5 and i do not have apple car play
TBONENYC 2018 Mazda6 and Mazda3 “touring” and above is standard. All others can be upgraded for $199 + labor.
Zoom Zoom! Always smiled when saw the music you pick :)
Systems like this should have all their functions available at all times. I hate it when things get switched off when driving.
Alex is wrong about it being less distracting to touch the screen opposed to using the knob. As a touch screen, there is no haptic feedback. You MUST look at the screen. You must shift your body position, even if just a little. The knob is superior in all respects.
Agree, once you get used to the interface it's actually a good system with the knob.
Finally Mazda catches up on the latest in infotainment system...now it’s time for an 8 speed transmission, allowing touch screen to be used while in motion and upgrading the camera resolution
Would you know if for 2017.5 mazada 6 would be able to get Apple Car play?
erm000 yes they can!
I never use the screen on my Mazda3 as a touchscreen. I much prefer using the commander control wheel which offers much easier control when on the move. Besides, I hate greasy finger marks on the screen.
$500 in Australia, they are Fkn dreaming. Mazda is this how you treat your customers??? We buy your cars and get our car serviced at your dealerships. You should never have moved the USB hubs from the central storage bay. I don’t want the hardware upgrade, I just want the software.
I love my SP25 but I won’t be back next vehicle I buy if this is how you treat your customers. I was also very disappointed with your Proprietary wiper blade refills that cost $70. What a joke.
I'm still angry they got rid of the CD decks. Total asshole move. And you can't even get rid of the media center console, and put in your choice of aftermarket stereo systems!
At least you cannot in the 2017 Mazda3 sport sedan, which is what I have. There's no kit for it, or room to swap it out.
Haven’t done the upgrade yet, but was digging around to see if CP would work wirelessly. There were hints that the iPhone needs to see some kind of authentication chip for CP to work. I’d guess that’s what’s in the replacement USB hub, and why there’s an icon on the hub showing which USB port to plug your phone into.
The New Module increase the speed of charge and has a faster connection. is a $200 Module plus 2 hours of labor which could add up to $475 depends of your taxes. Also the infotainment is open source. So basically you can add it for free if you know how to downloaded and how to uploaded which there some videos online. Hope im Right with this info, correct me if im wrong.
Alex I think the 2020 Mazda 6 will get the upgraded software when its redesigned, This is the last refresh of this mazda 6 from 2014. It drives great though
How many moving maps do we need to be watching? The Infotainment for a moving map is plenty, plus the HUD is right in ones line of sight.
Mazda, please use the the same policy with other Mazda models as you have for Mazda6 for this upgrade. I just purchased a Grand Touuring preassuming that this upgrade would be free for me as it is in Mazda6 Grand Touring. $500 eve on a Touring or Grand Touring is a RIP-OFF. I thought only Honda did that. Needless to mention, great video as always.
I don’t think that Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, etc. completely replace the built-in Mazda navigation, especially if you’re in an area with no cell data service.
Thank you for this video. I’m running firmware 70.00.100 and have the CarPlay kit installed, however my apps screen DOES NOT show CP/AA apps.
8 inch screen is fine in this kind of car.
k domster no it’s not young buck 15 inch it’s better
As a part time Amazon Flex driver it would be amazing if the Flex app were to work with Apple CarPlay. Otherwise, as nice as it looks, I don't think it's worth the $400 upgrade.
This one needs a refresh. :)
It is illegal here in Canada, to touch the screen of any infotainment screen while in motion anyway.
Does the screen quality differ between 2017 and 2018 models ?
Anyone able to answer a question for me? From what i can see in these Mazda 6 infotainment reviews, there are no preset stations available? Your presets are now essentially labeled 'favorites'. So when i jump over to Sirius XM radio, presets will not pop up - it just tunes to my latest/last channel?
I prefer the industry standard of having your presets on screen along with the station playing and that info on display as well. Hopefully they can fix this in the future if what i described above is true.
There _are_ presets, and yes, they are called "favorites." There is no fixed number of presets, which is an advantage over other systems--you don't have empty or insufficient slots.
No, presets don't pop up when you change sources. You navigate through them using the arrow buttons (on the steering wheel or at the bottom of the screen or with the favorites button on the right side of the knob).
I understand where you're coming from on the showing presets on the screen, but honestly that's not an improvement for systems that use a knob controller. Using Ford's latest infotainment & Mazda's, Ford's is no easier or convenient.
Recently I installed Android Auto/Carplay in my 2017 Mazda 6. It's like you said, touchscreen works just fine with the iPhone, not working at all with the Android phones. Frustrating as heck, least to say, inconsistent.
2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature. Radio question: how do I turn the radio OFF so that it doesn't come back on unless I turn it ON?
In other words, why isn't there an ON/OFF knob (switch, button) for the radio (or other audio)? Seems like a real glitch in an otherwise excellent car.
Nice review
I'm underwhelmed. I'm shopping for a new car right now and have been waiting for Mazda to sort this out, only to be disappointed by the poor integration and Mazda's bizarre refusal to allow users to use the system as they see fit while moving. If this is the best they can do, I'll be buying something else. I'm not trying to start an argument, that's a simple fact. A lot of my driving, unfortunately, is in city and rush-hour traffic, so better phone integration is an important criteria in my car-buying choice. Others do it better while still making a good car, and they'll get my money.
You make a lot of sense from a consumer point of view as to exactly what it is that you need to make your trips more efficient, safer, and more in alignment with your philosophy on how to best navigate. I feel that MANY car brands miss the boat in this arena and lose customers left and right because the cockpit doesn't support them and others just accept what is given. I hope you are able to find what you are needing. For me, I spent the $450 upgrade for the carplay because I felt it was safer and better for my needs. I got it installed today and found navigating somewhere was actually easier. I always cringed when my GF sitting next to me wants to go somewhere and has the address pulled up in her phone within seconds while I am fumbling with entering the POI or address in Mazda's native navigation system. I agree with you on some points, but I think having the iPhone handle the navigation and technology side will be so much better for me. I appreciated your comment - you are spot on.
Upset that they completely ignore Android Auto.
The control knob is easier to use than the touchscreen
Hi Alex, i would like to know if i can play any video on UA-cam on Mazda 6 display?
The guy says asked your questions, but doesn't. Also I'd like to know if mh phone plug in or on bluetooth can you play videos from UA-cam?
Could you also make a demo for the android auto on the mzd connect?
I have a 2017 Mazda 3. I’m so bummed that they did this not that long even after I bought my brand new Mazda.
You can have it installed at the dealer
Much easier to interface with the rotary controller!! It’s simple to use and you get used to it quickly-if you have some sort of intelligence!!
One thing I'm curious about is that. They push for this rather than navigation because it has more features but when it comes to navigation. Will it be reliable or does it disconnect when you lose signal such as travelling in the mountains like on a road trip.
I make food deliveries and have navigation on my car but the map is outdated so I use my smartphone's google map and it works fine so why should I bother spending $200+ to have it on the car's infotainment system? Just get a magnetic phone holder and it'll only cost you $8, a much cheaper solution.
😢 In 2017 They had said it would be free what happened?
Sandra Boyle I know right 😒
Just got my brand new Mazda MX-5 today and it doesn't seem to support either iOS or Android. Kind of sucks!
I kind of want the update, but don’t really want to lose my hacked features either...
which are?

There's a tutorial available but it's pretty self explanatory. You just need a USB drive to flash the firmware. Don't know which Mazda you have, but some on some of the newer stock and newer firmware, I think they disabled USB flashing so YMMV
@@Magnetorheological cool thanks man.
I forgot, how much is the upgrade. Thanks

Can you use the maps on Apple Carplay and play music from the radio at the same time?
Ramon Suarez yes
which car is this, you ask how far. But you did not show any distance for non mazda owner to see
If I buy this used from a dealership can I still get this updated?
Question: When in Apple CarPlay, does pushing the command knob up/down/left/right do anything that scrolling left/right doesn't do? For instance, when in Mazda's Infotainment Settings Menu, you actually have to push left or right on the knob to move between menu tabs while scrolling left/right is reserved for moving between options within the selected menu.
The USB had to be changed because Mazda put in a low power port that did not meet Apple specs.
I have a 2018 Mazda 3 and when I'm just sitting in my car (not driving)
and I text or even unlock the phone on the communications screen it'll
beep and come up "my active call" It's driving me nuts because it's
never done this previously and I can't figure how to turn it off. Any
ideas from anyone out there???
Thanks, a very useful video. Thinking of getting the 2019 Mazda 6. When playing music, but with maps on screen, is there a button that pauses the music without having to go home, go into the music app and pause the music in there?
As I just enabled this on my Mazda, I can say that at least on Android Auto Yes, it leaves the ability to pause plus a few others (FF/RW) on the bottom of the screen while the Maps are active on the screen.
What's the link to turn off the no touch while driving ? Passengers should be able to use it
Devin Jiminez there is none. Mazda has always disabled touchscreen while the car is moving. Some say it has to be in park, but mine lets me use it up to 5 mph only
Why don’t they just use a free software upgrade for older models?
Needs the upgraded USB cables and hub with upgraded USB ports is why. You can get the Hub firmware upgraded by the dealer, but it won't be enabled without the components.
I have a 2015 Mazda 3 and use a hack to get Google car play because Mazda wants $100 just to unlock the navigation
Too little too late for the Mazda dealer near me that closed in June 2018.
Does have mazda cx3 2019 carplay in?
I was at the Mazda dealer few weeks ago getting maintenance and saw an CX-3 there and it had that capability. Looks like the same head unit that is on Alex's video and in my Mazda6.
Mazda's infotainment system is horrendously slow and their navigation is laughable so I'm glad Android Auto is finally coming. Too bad it's going to cost an extra $450 for eligible Mazda cars to get.
Here in Cali I was offered $200 plus labor at my dealer
Jonathan Weiss You’re right, but with a little bit of smooth talk you might get the dealer to give you a bit of a discount from the offer price of $199. And even without the discount, it would still be lower than $450
Just do it yourself. Theres videos on UA-cam and it looks fairly easy.
AJ Guevarra I was offered 199 with labor and it ended up costing me 600.00 in Iowa
Except it kills the HUD navigation. Sucks
NO i do not want it, because I cannot install tweaks anymore after its upgrade
That screen looks like a new Casio piano display... kinda nuts.
Guy Jordan I agree lol
It will be available for Mazda 2 High 2018? Thank for your comments

I refuse to pay that much for a system that Mazda was too stubborn to install in their cars until now.
I forgot to update my response.
After the firmware update went very smoothly, I installed the hardware that I bought from eBay.
It took about 3 hours to install, but the entire system is up and running and is great.
I especially love having the faster charging for my phones.
I’m very glad I didn’t pay Mazda for them to do it.
Shai Yammanee did it require removing the front console ? I’m tempted to do it for the cheaper price. Every local Mazda dealer quoted me around $400 which is crazy considering doing it yourself probably cost around $150
Too bad there is not a Wireless Apple Car Play option!
Wireless CarPlay, currently, requires a WiFi connection between the car and the phone. We’re a generation away from that level of complexity trickling down to the mass market.
Basically, if you want wireless CarPlay before 2020, I hope you like German cars 🙁
I just tried to update on my 2016 Mazda 3 from Canada but no new things happen on mine. Please let me know if some get it on M3 2016 .Thanks
Any idea if they roll out the updates for the Mazda 2 as yet?
Does anyone’s Apple car play gps/maps sound only goes through the driver side ? And the music through the passengers’??
Everything I see about apple/android convinces me they are overrated, and people making decisions based on them are fools.
Can you use waze or google maps with this feature?
According to Apple, yes.
Yes. I use both all the time; I've got a 2018 Mazda 3 GT. Waze displayed on the infotainment screen is SO much better than using it on your phone. You wont want to go back!
What about the 2018 Mazda 2 ... er, Toyota Yaris ia?
maremacd right I need answers!!
We have a Fiat 124 Spider, any chance Apple CarPlay can be retrofitted for that Mazda-based system?
I want a Fiat 124 Spider!!!! I have a feeling that Fiat will have to support that but now that Mazda dealerships have gone through a few upgrades, you may want to contact one or two and see if any one of those want to tackle the job. Since this is something that WE have to pay money for - the dealers are making a lot of money doing this service.
More than half the video is not about the actual title of the video, Carplay...

Is this available with 2017 Mazda 6?
Does CarPlay integrate with the HUD (can you see navigation/map on the HUD)?
It does not.
I love Mazda, but boy were they late to the party on Android Auto/Apple Carplay. Better late than never I suppose.
who shows up to parties early
100% agree with you! This should've happened three years ago with ALL automakers - let Apple and Android control our navigation, etc. In fact, I think life would've been so much easier if auto manufacturers would've just given us a flat panel screen and allow us to mirror our phones.
I have a 2017 Mazda axela but I can watch music video from my thumb drive .can any one help me?
I have one question sir,
Do you maybe know, how to lock the door on mazda cx5 (I own one) till the engine is running?!
Use the key that is in your key fob. Look for the small indention on the back side of the key fob , pull it and the car key will slide out.
I'm still befuddled, by the fact that Alex is an iPhone user 🤨🤨🤨🤨. I always pegged him for being on #teamandroid 😑.

Mazda 6. He says it a few times at the start
Will I be able to upgrade a 2016?
Tim Cui give Mazda two more months. They said they are starting with the 2018. Then slowly update all the way down to 2014.
Tim Cui I would call the dealership every few weeks.
Mazda (In Canada) are doing my Mazda 6 (2016) in a couple of weeks time. $445 is a bit expensive, but its going to be an improvement over the standard Mazda infotainment system.
Andrew Davies yes I have a 2015 and the radio sucked, with tom tom. I bought a pioneer aftermarket radio and love it.
I received an email today about the Appleplay. I think they are ready for other cars now
