Renewable Energy and the Energy Transition

  • The world is driven by fossil fuels like oil and gas. This has some negative repercussions: Rising energy prices due to decreasing deposits, dependence on unstable oil and gas producing regimes and global warming.
It becomes clear, that a revolution in the way how we produce and use energy is necessary. Central to this energy transition are new technologies, which produce energy from renewable sources such as wind or sun.
With Germany as an example, this documentary video shows what renewable energies are and how they work as well as what the concept of energy transition means.
The clip is part of the WissensWerte Project of the german non-profit organization /e-politik.de/ e.V.

While there are problems with nuclear power, bringing up one incident to dismiss it isn't right. When you compare it to accidents and fatalities involved in other means of energy production, nuclear power is one of the better options. That is not to say there aren't valid arguments to be made against nuclear power, just that this video misrepresents the issue in a kind of alarmist manner

    Er
    1) the Carbon fiber bodies of windmills are made with oil dirivatitves, the plastic parts of windmills are made with oil dirivatives, the synthetic rubber parts of windmills are made with oil dirivatives, and the machines that make the parts are made wit,run on oil and coak..plus you need to fly, ship,or truck them...then there is the greese for the spin
    2) multiple parts of solar panels likewise require oil to run and maintain
    3) Biomass energy still needs machines made from and run by oil

This is fantastic, I'd like to show an excerpt of your video in an online course for University of Colorado. I believe you have this listed in creative commons, but I would like to ensure I put the correct attribution for your great work. Could you tell me how you would like me to reference you?

I am supportive of a wide mix of renewables. I will say that the most important factor is increased efficiency in appliances, homes etc. The key term is ephemeralization (producing more and more with less and less) which Bucky Fuller coined a long while ago. There is one type of nuclear energy worth checking out using Thorium in LFTR (liquid fluoride thorium reactor) rather than Uranium. I'm not sure if I totally endorse it yet but it looks promising so far.

Food can be grown hydroponically or the energy crops, land is not an issue. You can build an entire building in the heart of New York city filled with hydroponic food or energy crops.Wind turbines are a problem, not just for birds but the sight of it all,and risk of collapsing. The Algae bio is perfect to use.The Italians designed an electric scooter that charges the battery whenever you use the breaks.Apply the same engineering to electric and hybrid cars.

So i'm a little confused - how is renewable energy our future if it is causing animals' flight patterns/ways of life to be messed. Forests are being deforested (increase Co2) and some other problems also arise from it.

i live in holland and there been lots of windmills here for ages already, and i never saw a bird flying into one. I did see a bird flying into a windo that is way to clean , but i don't think windows are a treit to nature :)

I think renewable energy is the only alternative source of electricity for the future, I encourage the search for such increase ver the northern countries and in Africa where there's inexhaustible resources without compromising the health beings

Perpetual Motion would not make a great presentation because all the devices could be made to blend in with the existing scheme.
No need for a connecting Grid.
    No need for Power Houses.
In fact every appliance you can imagine could be self-powered.

  • @Powercatsquirrel

Electricity is electricity, you don't have to change the power grid, only the source. Unfortunately, if it takes 2 yrs to build a green facility or facilities, it will take 2 yrs to replace after a natural disaster. You would need a backup power source. Fact is, it's cheaper to run the backup facility fulltime, and it's more reliable. What's hard to understand about that?

And the real kicker is it takes 20x as much oil to run a solar array,5x as much oil to make biofuels, and 15x as much oil to make windpower arrays....it'swhy governments, who actually controls and owns the oil in the first place..have to dump in good money after bad to support the overly expensive alternative energy technology built on oil tech in the"Oil Age"
Or am I the only one noticing Solar was $5000 for a 1500k array in 2008 and now costs $20000 cause of them raising taxes on oil, coal, gas?

Quite the opposite. It will not effect my industry in any way. Regardless of the source, I will build it, transmit it, and distribute it exactly the same for the same rate.
    We encourage viable solutions.

If anything magnets are the easiest way - nuclear power should not be dismissed so quickly as well.

Three things: 1) It was very hard to watch this video because the female voice was SO SEXY (It was distracting for me). and 2) Such a quick dismissal of nuclear? (seems like a straw-man argument). and 3) I'm all for reducing or getting rid of using coal and oil, but don't renewable energies also raise the world's temperature?

Your analysis on biomass fuels is woefully misinformed. What about algae? Algae can be grown on waste on non-arable land. This algae takes up CO2 and can create gas, diesel and jet fuel. This needs to be updated with facts...
