    I personally think that fusion will replace all of these due to the fact that only a few reactors could provide more than enough power for the entire planet. It’s also a good idea for long term space travel because it can run on hydrogen the most common element in the universe. Then again it may never happen since it’s so efficient that electricity prices would drop drastically the only real reason to pay an electrical bill after this is to justify the cost of building

      I know I'm late, but in reality the problem is perspective. We have the most advanced piece of technology imaginable sitting in our sky, it's literally a prerequisite for all of these technologies, but instead of trying to learn more about it we waste our energy building bombs and starting super projects that dont finish. The US spent billions on unfinished nuclear reactors, and the ones in operation still arent being updated despite old technology being the only reason Fukishima was possible. If it werent for people protesting the plants in Japan, Fukishima wouldve been upgraded with a gravity well to prevent meltdowns without requiring a power source. American nuclear infrastructure is deteriorating too, nothing is new and scientists are scarce.

      Algae may sound good in theory, but the efficiency of algae collecting sunlight and converting into fuel is only a fractional percentage. This means that the cost of getting a biofuel from algae is about $85 per gallon according to recent estimates. This means it is not practical in the long run.

      Notice how he never mentioned LFTR, and only mentions junk monkey science. He came kind of close with the fast breeder which are still solid fuel, and have a terrible meltdown track record. I believe every fast breeder that has been tried has either melted down, or was shut down before it did. It just proves humanity is still very much a master slave civilization. Until that is broken, humanity stands no chance at real progress. Energy advances are the biggest threat to the BEAST, 'if you will'. A liquid 'metallic salt' fuel type nuclear reactor is the only correct next move for humanities energy needs!!!!!! For earth that technology has already been discovered but rejected in 1973 due to its disruptive nature to the status quo. Its called LFTR. "It is your only hope" as Princess Leia would say. Sadly, I don't hold out too much hope that humanity will come to this conclusion in time! The biggest problem humanity faces is it's fear to obtain freedom at whatever cost necessary. Just look how fast Islam is spreading. By the way Islam means submit. Terror steals freedom. But freedom destroys terror of any kind. "Freedom is like the Lion. Let it loose. It will defend itself." LFTR will pull you monkeys away from fossil fuel. Helium 3 fusion will pull you away from LFTR. Anti Matter will come after that? You will not be able to skip LFTR. LFTR will bring you the carbon age, Graphene, and many other fantastic technologies to the mainstream. Like the 'space elevator' for example. You will not be able to mine the moon for Helium 3 without being a LFTR civilization. With LFTR all your transportation will run on cheap to make Hydrogen. LFTR will desalinate ocean water very cheap, then Graphene will come on line for dirt cheap desalination filtration. So on, and so forth. Many many other fantastic life changing technologies will be born out of a LFTR civilization. LFTR is a major threat to the masters over humanity. The BEAST is the only thing between LFTR and you!!!!!!! KILL THE BEAST!!! Just like darkness is destroyed by light. The BEAST is destroyed by the TRUTH!!! plus.google.com/115372275668075364660/posts Perhaps BEAST should be plural. I don't believe there's just one.

      i. kavi ,
      I just added my opinion on why enumeration of alternative sources of energy is not a winning arguement. The adversary is the rich billionaires who own the Coal and Oil industries. They tell their workers that the global warming is a hoax and that their workers will be unemployed very soon if because of introduction of these alternative sources of energy. These workers who are largely losing their jobs should be hired and trained to build rechargeable batteries and PV cells so they can be assured that their livelihood is respected by the new industry. Stop preaching logics to these workers. They feel worthless if they are not working and who could reassure them practically? The new barons of the alternative sources of energy! Your audience should not be Me! It should be those whose jobs are being on the verge of being wiped out! Retraining of the Coal and Oil miners is money well spent on the road to a new and viable alternative to energy. Go for it!

    a) the item marked "8. Tidal power" does not discuss tidal power, but rather focuses on wave power. These are two very different energy sources, with two very different futures.
    b) "7. Hydrogen" is not an energy source, but rather a means of transporting energy. Hydrogen still needs to be manufacutred somewhere, either by use of extreme heat, or by consumption of electricity. Perhaps this item could be replaced by one on Thorium reactors.

    Well, on nuclear evergy, you didn't mention Thorium Liquid Salt reactors which can put out ~95% evergy as direct electricity, also use up nuclear waste (though not as efficiently as as what you already covered) as the reaction process recycles the uranium/plutonium used to start the reaction, and if it gets out of hand there's an emergency draining system that moves the liquid to a cooling chamber solidifying the solution effectively ending the reaction automatically. Then to get it going again you reheat the solution and pump it back into the reactor and you're golden.
    Not to mention the "waste" can be used for a very wide variety of medical and industrial applications.
    Oh and the amount of Thorium used is miniscule yet generates enormous output. AND Thorium is a waste product of mining (especially in the US) so from decades of this we have a giant resource pool to pull from.

    • @uxsvent1
      @uxsvent1 9 років тому +2

      Gavin Alward cant they use the "waste" for medical cancer treatments and 238 is needed very badly by nasa for there space batteries right. meaning if its in space in a sat its not on earth.

    • @PvtScottish
      @PvtScottish 9 років тому +1

      John Garvey Yes! In fact I just saw a commercial today for "proton therapy", I think it's what they called it. I can't think of the specific isotope used for the type of treatment right now though. It'd be interesting to find out what they're using and where they get it.
      I don't know much about NASA's "space batteries" but I can imagine it'd be useful somewhere.
      Also, as far as space goes, if a small scale LFTR was developed it would be near perfect for space travel and powering tech off world; say, a moon base.
      And although solar is getting more and more efficient all the time, for any deep space travel you'll need something a bit more sustainable using very limited resources.

      Gavin Alward This technology will have to be produced privately because of the vested interests of big business and lobby groups behind our political "leaders ". China has purchased the GE technology from Oak Ridges and is pushing ahead to secure the IP's {international patents}. We may have to produce thorium reactors for a needy country to help wake up the West. At least thorium is plentiful (cheap), and the reactors can be located anywhere , not needing cooling water. Perhaps small encapsulated reactors could be used for transportation .

    Great Research! "An in-depth look at how the world will be powered in the coming years. These are ten most promising alternative energy sources of tomorrow. It’s a really exciting time to be alive. We have a front row seat to the only known transformation of a world powered by dirty fossil fuels, to a planet that gets its energy from renewable, clean sources. It’s happening just once, right now."

      I would argue that the ultimate source would be anti-matter, if we, one day, can tap into this, and find an effective way to either store it or use it as we produce it. If you wanna know more on the subject just research anti-matter. This is, by far, the biggest source of pure energy that our current physics know of. "Piezoelectricity is the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid materials (such as crystals, certain ceramics, and biological matter such as bone, DNA and various proteins) in response to applied mechanical stress. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure and latent heat."

    The solar power plant in California that is mentioned at about the 7:26 mark is one of the most expensive energy power plants, that if it was not prompted up by the government, would have been shut down by now or never would have been built. It is the perfect example of how we can build something as a proof of concept, and then we should learn that it was a bad idea and never do it again. It cost about 10,000 times more to buy electricity from that power plant than it does from more traditional solar power plants. It is also important to state that solar is still the most expensive way to generate electricity. Also, growing by 500% or f times is saying that solar went from .26% of the U.S. energy production to 1.3% of the U.S. energy production, which is not a bad thing, I just think that we should be honest with the solar growth. I cold discuss many other points in this video, however, it is best to say that there are many cool ideas out there, however, the technologies are not ready for massive implementation.

      @@4notron 'I believe every fast breeder that has been tried has either melted down, or was shut down before it did.' I don't think a fast breeder has ever 'melted down'. One near Detroit did partially melt a couple of fuel rods, but was repaired and put back into service. No radiation was released, and nobody was harmed. Russia has two large fast reactors providing power, and last month signed a contract to build some in China. India has a small demonstration one, and has a large power reactor almost ready for service. There are currently no reactors running on thorium, though a few did so in the sixties and seventies, and there has never been a power producing molten salt reactor.

    • @Infernot1
      @Infernot1 8 років тому +9

      +Dana Pearson solar is so inefficient. First of all, you need a huge amount of solar panels to produce a significant amount of energy. Meaning tens of square miles, even hundreds. Not only this, but if the sun isn't shining, whether it's cloudy, wintry, foggy, or nighttime, solar will get even more diluted, to the point that something else needs to fill its place. Solar is good on, say, a family scale. To power the world? No chance. A standard 1,000 megawatt nuclear power plant that takes up 1 square mile produces more power than 30 square miles of solar panels. And a thorium plant can be scaled up or down, to the tiny ten megawatt range, to the thousands of megawatts. It is not cheap, granted, but because it burns about 98% of the thorium into energy, it is ultra-efficient. On the other hand, solar, and only the really expensive panels, can harvest maybe 20% of incoming solar energy if you're lucky. Thorium is not toxic; its radiation is not high enough to be at all dangerous. It is not weaponizable - it does not have a critical mass as uranium does - and because thorium is often already liquidized, at least in the molten salt and thorium reactors, it cannot have a meltdown. Also, the only emission is water. And last I check, water is pretty non-toxic.

    • @andersbm730
      @andersbm730 8 років тому +2

      +ron hous Fission energy is really quite weak in comparison to fusion. No one wants to dump billions $ into fission energy when fusion will take it's place 20 years later.

And anti-matter energy won't be available in our lifetime, we don't even know how to get large amounts of anti-matter that we could use. I feel a little bit sad because of this because as soon as we are able to use anti-matter as an energy source, we should be able to make interstellar travel possible.

It is ubiquitous, abundant and the nuclear reactor to harness it's energy has already been developed back in 1950s with multiple working models. It's efficiency is much higher than current uranium based nuclear reactors. Check out videos of Kirk Sorensen on youtube. Thorium should be #1.

    What about Thorium Nuclear. Safe, no long term waste, lot's of cheap fuel. Looks like China or India are going forward with this and will have to teach the world how....................

      Not as simple as you might think. Do a little research and you'll see it has its own set of downfalls.

      ***** says:
      "What about Thorium Nuclear..."
      ==
      Google, "Thorium hype"
      You'll get eyeful.
      If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

      India is in its advance stage of building thorium nuclear power reactors but electricity production can't start before 2050. Major problem is the cost of the project is more then Rs. 3,492 crore( $5.2 billion ) per year. Electricity generated from it would be sold to the State Electricity Boards at Rs. 4.44 a unit ( $ 0.07 ) India is a developing country and can't put lot of money in R & D but remember the engineers and scientific as good as those in developed countries.We have been to moon and to Mars.We are on a rise. We are Nuclear power and we are peaceful and need little help for developed countries like UK , US, FRANCE, etc

    You forgot hemp oil, and liquid thorium reactors. Also NONE of this will ever become main stream until the oil barons have made their last dime on the last drop of crude.

      +Edmund Squid XOM already owns power generation plants. Where did you think they were doing ?? They are greedy but not stupid they do have an eye looking at the horizon.

      Hemp oil is a biofuel, which he did mention and liquid thorium reactors are similar to spent nuclear fuel reactors that he also mentioned that he omitted it.

      sure that's why Elon Musk is a $Billionaire because he waited for oil barons to sell the last drop of petroleum.
