    Flattened the biggest buck of my life with an 1886 Winchester in 45-90. Excellent cartridge.

    I remember in the year 1991 at a flea market in Pennsylvania and for $35 I got an old Winchester chambered in 45-90
    after having it inspected by a licensed gunsmith the problem was I only had very few rounds for it because they were not readily available. I remember having to use one to save my life against a brown bear that was on my property I couldn't believe how I was able to protect myself with two bears with this firearm it is a fine weapon. I still own the firearm and I couldn't believe how much it's worth I found out later on that the firearm was built in the latter part of the 1890s according to Winchester when I contacted them they told me that this particular serial number was made to use the modern smokeless powder because I was concerned about this damn thing blowing up in my face.

    Thank you for this, I wasn't aware of this calibre. There are new calibres coming out every year and none of them kill any better than the old tried and true ones. The men that made these cartidges are all pioneeers and their work deserves to be remembered.

    Love the older black powder guns! Lol, brings back the saying once the smoke clears! Still top performers in big game. I found a little .444 marlin on a pawnshop self. Had been sitting there 15 years. Long story short, it really has performed well on hogs and mule deer!

    I always get a good chuckle about the Mike Venturino books when he evinces curiosity and mystery in them about the 45-120 and the 50-130 / 50-140 calibers. Among others borrowed by American hunters in the 1870s, 1880s, these are British sporting calibers that predate the Sharps etc. The 45-120 is known as the 450 BPE. The 50-140 is the 500 BPE (Black Powder Express).

    I was just beginning to get over letting a 45-90 go almost 20 years ago and you had to do this damn video and it's just like it happened yesterday. I just started sleeping again, now what?
    Guess I'll have to watch it again, maybe 3 more times. All the 45-70s on the wall are starting to get nervous. Thanks.

    Love the classic black powder rounds and lever guns. I first learned of this round reading an old book on land cruising and prospecting when I was a teenager back in the 1980s.

    Enjoyed that very much, my first 45/70 was a fox studios trapdoor the barrel was so oversized the bullet tumbled. Over the years have collected several trapdoor and assorted lever and single shot rifles. I load for them all . I even traded for a 577 Snyder, cost more to set up to reload than I had in the gun. Keep up the good work.

    Really enjoy that rolling block . I was watching a fella on youtube with a Winchester 1886 50-110 , then started to research other similar cartridges came across the 45-90 . Seeing how many modern 45-70 thought wouldn't be much to get a 45-90 . Like the 357 mag and 44mag you can fire specials. Looks like good Elk medicine. Great share and information. I also reload and casting bullets sounds interesting in modern smokeless and Bp
    Ill have to purchase that book. Have a good day .

    That 520 grain bullet is great for hunting. As you said, you can eat right to the bullet hole, no jellified meat. Mine is only 45-70, but same bullet with soft lead. Several elk and bears along with other critters, and I have never recovered a bullet. They always pass clear through. That lighter bullet in the 1886, was considered an "express round". It isn't far off from some of the British dangerous game rounds used in Africa. You didn't tell me you had an '86. I've always wanted one!

    When I was researching my Sharps carbine I found that the first ammunition was not called "45-70, 45-90, 45-120" it was refered to by the inch. The brass was 45-3 or 45-3.5 and so on. When they got brass it was long and they had to cut it to the correct length for their rifle. I found my Sharps is a 50-70.

    I have a Siamese Mauser that I've been wanting to get converted to a 45-70. Since watching a few videos from the tube, would it be a good choice since it could shoot both rounds 45-70 & 45-90?

    • @BuckskinDave
      @BuckskinDave  3 роки тому +1

      45-90 case is a bit longer than the 70, so you would have to chamber it for the 90. Although it is said that you can shoot the 70 in the 90 chamber I think if you are gonna load smokeless just chamber it for the 45-70, you won't get enough out of the 90 that the 70 will get you anyway. Thanks for dropping by

    • @charleshanks6186

      have a 4570 siamese mauser that shoots very tight groups with 300 grain hollow points in it...reload my own..have even taken the 500 grain 458 mag bullets up to 2150fps.. with no damage...if could gave only one big rifle I would choose my siamese mauser...had the bolt bent to make shooting easier too

    • @BuckskinDave
      @BuckskinDave  3 роки тому

      The 45-90 is longer than the 45-70 so the shorter will go in the longer chamber but not the other way around. With smokeless powder there is no advantage with the 90 over the 70 so I would just go with the 45-70 components are easier to find

  • @453421abcdefg12345
    @453421abcdefg12345 3 роки тому

    Interesting you use 3031 in your 45/90 cases, I have an 1886 in 50/110 and with modern solid head cases I cannot get anywhere near 110 grn in there, and with the ridiculous 350 grn bullet, which is as long as it is round, and the slow twist rifling, it makes a difficult cartridge to load, I can see why they went for the heavier bullet, but then that reduced the powder still further, using 3031 would redress the balance I think, stay safe! If u already have reloading stuff, just dies and shell holders maybe 50 buck's. If not hand held presses are not too much.
