oh for godsake, why does every old TH video have first comment of some guy saying tina is the best/ under-rated/ carrying the band. she was a beginner, it's only a 3 piece so every instrument is critical with the song dependent on it. ultimately DB is closest to carrying everything - songs, music, lyrics, voice.
Never made it to CBGBs but I saw this pre-Jerry iteration in a 1976 in a bar in New England with about 25 people in the audience. It was utterly riveting. They did a truly hot and tight 50 minute set…basically doing all the songs that ended up on the first two albums. Byrne’s nervous gangly anxious “Norman Bates” vibe was very authentic while his vocals and guitar work was really top not, anchored by Franz and Weymouth’s rock-solid Motown-by-way-of Bowery rhythm section. Back then there was no “Indie Rock”. Totally unique for its time (or any time)…and let’s face it, TH were still years away from truly making it outside NYC and a few college radio stations.
could I presume to add to your insights? I? think the precision in their play is rooted in the privileged manner in which they were introduced to those traditions (suburban music lessons, not to put too fine a point on it) (not to deny or otherwise obscure the racial structurings): that precision and distance is attributable in equal parts to instructor dynamics, physical location, and playback machinery.
Fascinating to watch this and compare this version to how Eno further sculpted the tune in the studio for Talking Heads second album. A good producer along with the right engineer are absolutely worth their weight in shiny gold and platinum records.
@@seanc6042 In the sense that their music still holds up today, I would say his comment is spot on. He is just pointing out how they shaped music, don't get your panties in a wad. If a band stands the test of time, you can definitely add that they were ahead of their time.

I guess this was before Tina developed the habit of keeping her eyes locked on David at all times. Here she’s watching him, all right, but not all through. Later, of course, she didn’t bother, but when she did so it strengthened the look of Talking Heads as a united band.
Could David Byrne's song intro be any more a textbook crippling shy person? I almost feel bad for him that he ended up the front man, given how intensely uncomfortable he seems when not singing.
Talking Heads so rarely fleshed out an idea, even in the simple mode of pop songs. I enjoyed their first single. Thereafter, I feel like I pretty soon saw through the baloney. Over time they proved they were a band almost entirely without promise. That's quite an achievement.
Tina Weymouth was practically a beginner on bass and yet she carries the whole song. Love it.

As Joy Division found out with Martin Hannett!
This band was so ahead of its time and so influencial for multiple genres of music it's not even funny
Truth!!
if they were ahead of their time they would NOT be of their time. But they are OF their time. a nonsesce/ cliche comment.

That audience member laughter right as David mentions the name of his band 😂
They're probably just laughing at DB, period.
The Talking Heads never cease to amaze me ...Iam still trying to figure them out in 2023....and no band has ever done that to me ...simply amazing
This is pure originality. Counter-punk perfection. This should have been in _Stop Making Sense_.

This is rare 'gemstone' footage, so fine! Really like this recording.
Great footage . Music for the thinkers most unfashionable.
The speed of light is just catching up with them now, some 48 years later.
Haven't heard this about 40 yrs. Wow.
It all works perfectly fine in this song!
I believe this is the earliest Talking Heads I've ever seen or heard. Thanks for posting. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
Dog prisoner of war? That's tragic. 😭
I first seen them in a little bar in Hawaii in 1978 called little orphan annie's, when I was in the navy, paid $3.00 cover charge
OMG what a find, I have black and white photos of them from 688 Club in Atlanta from that time...

Pre-Jerry Harrison, from the looks of it.....
I attended a Talking heads concert in early 1978 Oberlin College Finney Chapel. I was stunned and amazed,
I saw them in November 1978 at the Roxy Theater in LA. People were dancing on the tables. I was 18 at the time. An amazing show!
This is sooooo good. Just pure genius fighting its way out of him
Absolutely amazing! Thanks so much.
awesome to see this. the bass is bigger than tina

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Waw this is super awesome ❤️ Tks for sharing 🌹David and the bassist (do not recall her name) so youug and talented🤩💎
She learned to play bass because they couldn’t find a bass player for 2 years. Much respect.

I remember seeing them in 78 and the staring at David made her look worried about him. It went well with the Anthony Perkins thing he had going on.

David Byrne was/is a weird dude but putting that aside, his talent just got progressively better until it peaked around 1983.
